Mass breakout from Zliten prison
[Libya Herald] Some 90 inmates are on the run after escaping from Mager Prison in southern Zliten.

The authorities are now trying to round up the convicts, a local resident told the Libya Herald. He said many people in the area suspected prison guards of colluding in the mass breakout.

This is the latest in a growing list of jailbreaks over the last 12 months, which have seen at least 1,700 prisoners let loose with a low rate of recapture.

Just over two weeks ago, 55 prisoners beat feet from the Bawabat Al-Jibs prison in Tripoli

, when they managed to overpower prison guards. There were two jailbreaks in Ajdabiya and four in Sebha last year and, in July, 1,200 inmates beat feet from Benghazi's Kuwaifiya Prison during a riot.

Hundreds Flee North Nigeria Town Fearing Attack
[An Nahar] Residents of a northeast Nigeria

n town said Saturday hundreds of them have fled their homes for fear of attacks by Boko Haram

gunnies who killed 43 people this week in a nearby village.

About 400 men fled Bama on Friday to Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, 35 kilometres (22 miles) away following warnings from residents of Gombale village, where Boko Haram Islamists gathered for a planned attack on Bama, Usman Adam, one of the fleeing residents said.

"All able-bodied men, around 400 in all, have fled to Maiduguri after we received warning from Gombale residents across the river that Boko Haram were converging in the town for an impending attack on Bama," Adam told Agence La Belle France Presse.

Adam said only men are fleeing because they are mostly the victims of Boko Haram attacks as the assailants believe that some men, recruited as members of a vigilante group (or civilian JTF - Joint Task Force), are aligned with the army.

"Boko Haram has declared war on the people and they specifically target men because of the involvement of the Civilian JTF in fighting them alongside the military," he said.

Another resident, Ibrahim Kolo, said they took the warning seriously "given what happened in Konduga on Tuesday which we don't want repeated in Bama".

Heavily armed Islamist forces of Evil in 4X4 trucks attacked a mosque, markets and government buildings in a massive assault on Konduga in the troubled state of Borno on Tuesday.

State governor Kashim Shettima said 39 people were killed in the raid, the latest in a series of attacks in Borno.

Another four people were killed Tuesday when gunnies opened fire in the village of Wajirko in Borno, the epicenter of a gruesome Islamist rebellion that has killed thousands of people across northern and central Nigeria since 2009.

Shettima told news hounds at the scene on Wednesday that more than 70 percent of Konduga had been "razed to the ground".

Another 65 people were being treated for burn and gunshot wounds, a hospital source in Maiduguri told AFP.

Bama, a major town in Borno state, has been repeatedly attacked by Boko Haram Islamists who raided military and police posts, a prison and government buildings.

Peacekeepers disarm militias in C. Africa capital
[Bangla Daily Star] French and African peacekeepers yesterday seized weapons from militia in the capital of the strife-torn Central African Republic, but failed to detained a wanted leader of the rogue groups.

The international troops went house to house for about four hours in Bangui's Boy Rabe neighbourhood, the base of mostly Christian militias whose attacks have driven many minority Moslems from the city in recent weeks, sparking warnings of "ethnic cleansing".

Automatic weapons, grenades and a large number of munitions were seized in the operation that involved some 250 peacekeepers and police, according to an AFP correspondent on the scene.

"All people who were found to have weapons in their homes have been identified and will be handed over to the police," a peacekeeper from the African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
MISCA mission told AFP.

But despite surrounding the house of a senior militia leader Patrice Edouard Ngaissona, the soldiers failed to capture the man who casts himself as the political coordinator of the fearsome "anti-balaka" militias.

"They didn't manage to take me, I was out," Ngaissona said later.

Bangui chief prosecutor Ghislain Grezenguet said Ngaissona was "the big fish who had to be detained."

Peacekeepers left the neighbourhood after about four hours to jeers from residents.

The so-called "anti-balaka" militias were formed in the country in response to killing and pillaging by the mainly Moslem Seleka rebels following their coup nearly a year ago in the majority Christian nation.

In recent months, as international peacekeepers deployed to the former French colony have disarmed the Seleka, brutal attacks by the militias have sowed terror among the Moslem population, forcing many to flee the country.

Amnesia Amnesty International this week warned that violence in Central Africa has grown into an "ethnic cleansing" campaign, while the UN refugee agency has described the situation as "a humanitarian catastrophe of unspeakable proportions".

Arabia
Blast Kills Bahrain Policeman during Uprising Protests
[An Nahar] A Bahraini policeman has died of wounds he sustained in a kaboom during protests marking the anniversary of a 2011 Arab Spring-inspired uprising, the interior ministry said on Saturday.

The "terrorist kaboom" struck in the Shiite village of Dair outside the capital Manama late on Friday and maimed "two on-duty coppers assigned to secure the road," including the one who later died, the ministry said on Twitter.

It was the second reported blast during the protests marking the third anniversary of the uprising among the Gulf state's Shiite majority for a constitutional monarchy in the Sunni-ruled kingdom.

Earlier, the ministry reported another kaboom in the similarly-named village of Daih, which caused minor damage to a bus transporting police personnel, pictures posted on Twitter showed.

The blasts struck as protesters erupted into the streets in several areas of the small but strategic archipelago, which lies just across the Gulf from Iran and is home base to the U.S. Fifth Fleet.

Shiite villages have been at the forefront of the campaign among the majority community for the ruling Khalifa family to surrender its grip on all key cabinet posts in favor of an elected government.

Witnesses said that several protesters were maimed as police fired tear gas and bird shot to disperse them on Friday.

Demonstrators responded by hurling petrol bombs at security forces, the witnesses added.

Protesters had gathered in several Shiite villages in an attempt to march on the capital's Pearl Square where demonstrators camped out for a month in early 2011 before being violently dispersed by troops.

"Some villages saw rioting, vandalism and the targeting of coppers. This required police to respond to these criminal acts through legal means," the interior ministry said on Saturday.

A total of 26 people "suspected of rioting and vandalism" were enjugged
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
on Friday, the ministry said. The arrests followed 29 on Thursday.

Suspected Mossad agent given new identity in Canada, and betrayed.
[Jerusalem Post] Canadian-Iranian businessman
MOIS intelligence operative
Arian Azerber told The Toronto Sun on Saturday that the Canadian government has granted a new passport to a suspected Mossad agent who had his picture published by Dubai Police in 2010 after the assassination of Hamas operative Mahmoud al-Mabhouh in 2010.

Azerber claims that his information was obtained from Triana Kennedy, an employee at the federal agency Passport Canada, with whom he was having an affair.
Important enough target to give up his source as creds.
Triana Kennedy has been suspended from her job and is currently under federal investigation. She is suspected of leaking confidential government information.
Nice work Ms. Kennedy, bet you never saw that one coming. Next time forget the multicult thing and find a nice Irish lumberjack.
According to Azerber, Kennedy told him that the passport had been renewed after the assassination of Mabhouh in Dubai was exposed and that the Canadian government's claim that it had nothing to do with the affair is a lie. "It [Canada] provided a new passport," claimed Azerber. Azerber also told the newspaper the name and address of the person who received the passport. The Toronto Sun did not publish this information for privacy and security reasons.

After pictures were exposed by Dubai authorities of 26 suspected Mossad agents reportedly related to the assassination of Mabhouh, several countries suspended the passports of those people identified in the pictures. The passports belonged to Canada, the UK, Australia, Germany, Ireland, and France.

It is unclear if Arian Azerber is an uninvolved business man or if he has links to a foreign intelligence agency. A spokesperson for Passport Canada refused to comment on the matter.
Unclear? Lock Azerber and Kennedy away for long, long time. They may have just signed this fellow's death sentence.

Blast leaves eight injured in Peshawar
[DAWN] Eight passengers including children and women were maimed when an improvised bomb went off on Kohat Road on Friday.

The passengers were onboard a coach that was going to Kohat from Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.

An official of Badhber cop shoppe told Dawn that actual target of the terrorist act was a police van, which had just passed through the site.

The blast damaged the passenger coach, he added.

Bilal Faizi, a spokesperson for Rescue 1122, said that the seriously injured passengers were shifted to Lady Reading Hospital. The people, who sustained minor wounds, were taken to City Hospital, he added.

The injured passengers, who were shifted to Lady Reading Hospital, include Noor Badshah, 20; Shabeena, 29; Salman, 14; Janas Khan, 30 and Zubair, 25. Those, who were taken to City Hospital, include Sana, Farida and Zainab.

Police said that a search operation was launched in the area to arrest the terrorists. "We are still in search of the terrorists," an official said. He added that a case against unidentified turbans was registered at Badhber cop shoppe.

Several hurt in UoP clash over Valentine's Day celebrations
[DAWN] Several students were maimed after armed clash broke out between two rival groups at the University of Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
on Friday over the Valentine's Day celebrations.

A source in the university administration said a student activist of Islami Jamaat Tulaba
...the student wing of the Jamaat-e-Islami...
had suffered bullet wounds, while 13 others got minor injuries due to use of batons, iron rods and stones in the clash.

According to him, IJT, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami
...The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independent branch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores...
, had announced to observe the Valentine's Day as 'Haya (Modesty) Day' and therefore, its activists gathered outside the Academic Block of the university in the morning.

In the meantime, workers of Pakhtun Students Federation turned up in a Valentine's Day procession stirring up emotions on both sides.

In a little while, the provoked activists of the two groups began pelting each other with stones besides using batons, iron rods and stones.

The administration called in the campus police to control the situation.

In a bid to disperse crowd, coppers fired gunshots in the air and baton charged students.

However,
a good lie finds more believers than a bad truth...
things worsened as some students used arms against rivals and torched some rooms in the AB Block of the Abdul Wali Khan and Khushhal Khan Khattak Hostel.

The arson attack burned down blankets, books and beds in the rooms.

The violent students also targeted police by throwing stones on them.

The place turned into a virtual battlefield between the two groups forcing other students, especially girls, to run for cover.

Bilal Ahmad Faizi, a front man for Rescue Services 1122, said the service sent several firefighters to the campus shortly after learning about the fire from the university administration over the telephone and doused the galloping flames after a hectic effort of around 45 minutes.

Akhtar Amin, front man for the university, said the administration had formed a four-member committee headed by Professor Merajul Islam to investigate the incident.

He said the committee would record statements of the relevant people, including students, and submit a report to the administration.

An official of the campus police said six people had been named for the campus violence and they all were on the lam.

"We have started the paperwork but haven't done much else against the suspects under sections 324, 148 and 149 of Pakistain Penal Code and are planning to raid their possible hideouts in the city," he said.

The official said the injured student, Rizwanullah, had named six activists of PkSF in the FIR, while the university administration had sought registration of a separate FIR against both student groups.

During the violence, the injured student, who is enrolled in the fourth semester of the Bio-Technology Department, was taken to the Khyber Teaching Hospital, who he was admitted to the orthopedic ward.

A source in the hospital said the student had suffered bullet injury on the arm elbow but his condition was out of danger.

Meanwhile,
...back at the saw mill, Scarface Al had tied Little Nell to the log and was about to turn on the buzz saw...
PkSF provincial chairman Imtiaz Wazir and campus unit chairman Muqarb Khan Buneri alleged in a joint statement that IJT activists had attacked the PkSF workers and torched their hostel rooms.

They criticised the university administration for not taking action against IJT over violence.

The PkSF leaders said their group had nothing to do with the firing incident and that the student was injured in a 'one-sided firing.'

However,
a good lie finds more believers than a bad truth...
IJT leader Mohammad Nawaz Khan rejected the PkSF's claim and insisted the IJT procession to observe 'Haya Day' was almost over when the PkSF workers began hooting participants besides pelting them with stones.

"IJT celebrated the Haya Day like other parts of the country and had nothing to do with the Valentine's Day celebrations. However,
a good lie finds more believers than a bad truth...
the PkSF workers opened indiscriminate fire on our peaceful procession injuring one of our activists," he said.

'Organised network' of Al Qaeda found in Karachi
[DAWN] Police Sherlocks claimed on Friday to have spotted an 'organised network' of Al Qaeda in Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
with multiple wings whose members ranged from highly educated individuals to IT professionals and technologists who worked on 'bright students as potential members'.

The disclosure, which added to the worries of the people of Karachi reeling from the recent surge in incidents of terrorism across the city, was made following arrest of three young Qaeda bad boyz. Their interrogation led police to conclude that educational institutions had become a prime target of the globally-declared terrorist organization for recruiting young graduates.

"The suspects -- Junaid Alam alias Asad, Arman Naveed alias Shoaib Khan and Hassan Shuja alias Amir -- were tossed in the slammer
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
from different areas of Karachi," Raja Umer Khattab, who heads the counter-terrorism unit of Sindh police's Crime Investigation Department (CID), said at a presser.

"During initial investigation we have got some crucial leads which suggest that Al Qaeda is active in Karachi in a highly organised manner and is setting up different cells for different tasks. They are targeting young university and college students mainly living in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Shah Faisal Colony and Gulberg as their potential members."

They were contacted, he said, in a manner that they remained unaware of the group they were joining. They were later assigned the tasks according to their expertise.

To substantiate his claim, Mr Khattab referred to circulation of 'Al Qaeda literature and CDs' in the University of Karachi under the name of an unfamiliar group, 'Ashaab', some time back. He also disclosed names of a number of suspects, including a 'sports teacher' of a private university who heads the 'technical wing' of Al Qaeda.

"No student or teacher of the University of Karachi has been found involved so far," Mr Khattab said, adding: "The group targets young graduates as its potential workers and the recent arrests led to the recovery of a number of arms and explosives and devices used for making bombs."

He said: "They have also set up a laboratory in a house in Gulshan-e-Iqbal which has been busted. They targeted people of Bohra community, political workers and coppers over the past few years. They are so smart that they avoid using cellphones for communication and mostly rely on internet for messaging."

Three more officials, tribal elder kidnapped
[DAWN] Three government officials and a tribal elder sent by the authorities to negotiate release of two bigwigs kidnapped in Tump area of Kech district on Thursday were themselves taken away by Death Eaters on Friday.

The banned Baloch Liberation Front grabbed credit for both the kidnapping incidents.

Deputy Commissioner of Kech district, Abdul Hameed Abro, and Assistant Commissioner of Tump, Mohammad Hussain Baloch, were kidnapped on Thursday when they were returning to Turbat from the border town of Tump after a meeting with Iranian officials.

According to official sources, provincial authorities sent Assistant Commissioner of Dasht, Naeem Gichki, Tehsildar of Dashtan, Ahmed Ali, and Naib Tehsildar of Buleda, Rafiq Ahmed, to the area to approach the Death Eaters and negotiate the release of the kidnapped officials.

But when the team accompanied by two Levies personnel and a tribal elder, Mir Dost Muhammad, reached Gomazai area, their vehicle was intercepted by a group of gunnies and they were taken away.

But later the kidnappers freed the Levies men.

Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
Home Secretary Asadur Rehman Gilani told Dawn that efforts were being made to recover the kidnapped people. He said he himself would go to Turbat on Saturday to oversee the efforts.

Meanwhile,
...back at the desert island, Irene was indignant at the thought of doing such a thing without benefit of clergy...
the provincial authorities met on Friday to discuss the situation.

A correspondent from Gwadar quoted the commissioner of Makran division as saying that tribal elders of the area had been contacted and their help had been sought.

Rangers officer escapes suicide attack
[DAWN] A day after a Death Eater attack in which 13 police commandos were killed, a senior officer of the Rangers was attacked by a jacket wallah in the city's Qayumabad area on Friday morning. The officer, his guard and driver remained unhurt.

According to Korangi SP Usman Ijaz Bajwa, the Rangers sector commander was going from the Defence Housing Authority to his office in the Nursery area when the suicide bomber aged about 20 years went kaboom! in front of the vehicle. The vehicle's front portion was affected by the blast and its engine was damaged.

A bomb disposal squad official said the bomb weighed about 6kg and contained ball bearings of different sizes.

Police Surgeon Dr Jalil Qadir said parts of the bomber's body had been brought to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre and fingerprints of the 'bomber' had been sent to the National Database and Registration Authority for identification.

"The botched suicide kaboom could be part of the ongoing terrorist attacks on law-enforcement agencies to demoralise them," the superintendent of police said.

"This kind of cowardly attempts will strengthen our resolve to fight terrorism in all its manifestation," a Rangers front man said.

Five injured in blasts in Karachi's Orangi
[DAWN] Five people were maimed in two successive kabooms near Orangi Town's Mominabad cop shoppe on Saturday, DawnNews reported.

According to police sources, the first attack was by a hand grenade hurled at a street vendor near the cop shoppe while the second kaboom which occurred within a few minutes was by a bomb planted at a taxi-stand.

Police and rescue teams rushed to the location of the blasts. Sources said five people, including a policeman, were maimed in the kabooms and four vehicles had also been damaged.

The injured were shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

Police sources said nuts, bolts and ball bearings were also found from the sites of the kabooms, adding that the bomb seemed to be planted and of low intensity.

Today's incident came a day after a senior officer of the Rangers was attacked by a jacket wallah in the city's Qayumabad area. The Rangers sector commander was going from the Defence Housing Authority to his office in the Nursery area when the suicide bomber aged about 20 years went kaboom! in front of the vehicle.

A day prior to the Qayumabad attack, 13 police commandos were killed in a blast on Thursday near their training centre on the outskirts of Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
. Thursday's attack was claimed by the outlawed Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP) with which the government is currently engaged in peace talks.

Daniel Pearl murder convict attempts suicide in Pakistan
A British-Pakistani man convicted of the killing of US reporter Daniel Pearl has attempted to commit suicide in a Pakistani prison, an official said Saturday.
How can we help?
"Omar Sheikh, a British-Pakistani, who is serving life imprisonment in Hyderabad prison, tried to hang himself with the exhaust of the prison cell late Friday," senior police official Akram Naeem told AFP.

Pearl was working for the Wall Street Journal when he was kidnapped and beheaded in Pakistan in 2002. British-born extremist Omar was arrested with three others and convicted in June 2002 of Pearl's murder by an anti-terror court.

Akram said Saturday that security officials saw Omar and rescued him quickly.

"His condition is stable now and a case has been filed against him in the local police station," he added. In Pakistan prisoners who attempt to commit suicide can face additional punishment.
Death?
Pearl, 38, was the South Asia bureau chief for The Wall Street Journal when he was abducted in Karachi on January 23, 2002, while researching a story about Islamist militants. A graphic video showing his decapitation was delivered to the US consulate in the city nearly a month later.

In January 2011, a report released by the Pearl project at Georgetown university following an investigation into his death made chilling revelations when it claimed that the wrong men were convicted for Pearl's murder.

The investigation, led by Pearl's friend and former Wall Street Journal colleague Asra Nomani and a Georgetown University professor, claimed the reporter was murdered by Khalid Sheikh Mohammad, the alleged brains behind the September 11 2001 attacks, not Omar Sheikh.

Pearl's body was found four months after he disappeared, cut into a dozen pieces, the head severed, the upper torso still clad in a light blue track suit that his kidnappers made him wear, the report said.

Self-proclaimed 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was arrested in Pakistan in 2003 and is being held in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, awaiting trial by a US military tribunal.

Iraq
Iraq PM tours battlefield city as 22 security personnel killed
[Bangla Daily Star] Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki paid a visit yesterday to the battleground city of Ramadi, where security forces and allied rustics have for weeks fought to retake krazed killer-held areas.

His inspection tour came as snuffies killed 22 soldiers and police over two days and kept their grip on part of the northern town of Sulaiman Bek in a new front in the persistent rebellion against his Shiite-led government in Sunni Arab areas.

The visit is Maliki's first announced trip to Anbar province since jihadist snuffies and anti-government rustics seized control of parts of Ramadi and all of Fallujah to its east at the start of the year, in a major setback for his government.

Maliki's front man Ali Mussawi said the premier met with provincial officials and leaders of powerful local tribes.

"We came to confirm our support to our people and our tribes in Anbar," Mussawi quoted Maliki as saying in a speech.

Another official in Maliki's office said the premier would be briefed on the progress of military operations.

The takeovers in Anbar are the first time that anti-government forces have exercised such open control in major cities since the bloody insurgency that followed the US-led invasion of 2003.

The prospects of a quick resolution to the crisis seem slim, with Deputy Prime Minister Hussein al-Shahristani saying the strategy for retaking Fallujah is to surround it and wait for Sunni Arab gunnies to run short of weapons and equipment.

Authorities also face a small-scale version of the Anbar crisis in northern Iraq, where snuffies took control of part of the town of Sulaiman Bek and nearby areas in Salaheddin province on Thursday.

Local official Talib al-Bayati told AFP security forces had succeeded in retaking krazed killer-held areas on Friday, but then withdrew for unknown reasons.

Gunmen were in control of the town's Al-Askari neighbourhood yesterday, he said.

Sulaiman Bek has been hit by numerous attacks over the past year, and was briefly seized by snuffies in late April.

In July, 150 snuffies struck with mortar rounds, rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons, and executed 14 Shiite truck drivers on a nearby highway.

Twenty-two Iraqi soldiers and police have been killed in targeted attacks and festivities over the past two days, officials and doctors said.

In the city of Tikrit, north of the capital, gunnies lured a police colonel out of his house, shot him dead and fled the area on Friday, after gunnies killed four police guarding a nearby highway earlier in the day.

And snuffies rubbed out four soldiers and maimed three who were driving in a civilian vehicle on the highway.

In Sulaiman Bek, a police captain was stopped by snuffies and rubbed out on his way to pick up relatives in the town and evacuate them to safety.

In the Jurf al-Sakhr area south of Storied Baghdad
...located along the Tigris River, founded in the 8th century, home of the Abbasid Caliphate...
, five soldiers died in festivities with krazed killers.

In the northern oil refinery town of Baiji, a bomb killed five police guarding a pipeline.

Farther north, in the Sharqat area, gunnies killed a policeman and a soldier in separate attacks yesterday.

The often poorly trained and disciplined security forces are the target of near-daily attacks by krazed killers.

Violence in Iraq has reached a level not seen since 2008, when the country was just emerging from a period of brutal sectarian killings.

Foreign leaders have urged the Shiite-led government to do more to reach out to the disaffected Sunni Arab minority to undercut support for krazed killers.

But Maliki has taken a hard line ahead of a general election scheduled for April.

Overnight Iraq violence kills 18 soldiers, police
Attacks and clashes in Iraq killed 18 soldiers and police overnight, as the country struggles to contain its worst violence in years, officials and doctors said on Saturday.

Gunmen held part of the northern town of Sulaiman Bek, after security forces withdrew despite reportedly making gains in the area on Friday.

Five soldiers were killed during clashes with militants in the Jurf Al Sakhr area south of Baghdad on Friday night, while a bomb killed five police in Baiji, north of the capital.

Gunmen also killed a police colonel in his home in the city of Tikrit, also north of Baghdad, and shot dead four soldiers on the area's main highway.

And militants killed a police captain who was attempting to evacuate his family from the town of Sulaiman Bek.
Gunning for the Numbers Two and Three in the police organization (unless it's Threes and Fours... I'm not terribly clear on their hierarchy).

Iraqi army fights to wrest Sulaiman Pek from militants
Iraqi troops backed by helicopter gunships fought on Saturday to retake full control of a northern town from militants who overran parts of it earlier this week, the mayor and other local officials said, Reuters reported.

Talib Mohammed, the mayor of Sulaiman Pek, 160 km (100 miles) north of Baghdad, said the army had met fierce resistance in some parts of the town, after gaining some ground on Friday.

"Snipers and roadside bombs are preventing the army from totally controlling the town," he said. "A police captain was killed by a sniper this morning while he was trying to evacuate his family."

Militants raised the black flag of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) - a Sunni group also fighting in neighboring Syria - over parts of Sulaiman Pek on Thursday. An army captain in Sulaiman Pek said snipers were hindering bomb disposal teams faced with dozens of explosive devices.

"Our job is not easy, it's a guerrilla war," said Captain Falah Abdul-Ameer. "Snipers are a big issue now. We can't work out their exact location, they shoot and change places."
That's sorta what snipers do, Captain. Which is why few armies take snipers as prisoners...
South of Baghdad, ISIL militants killed at least eight soldiers in overnight clashes in Jurf al-Sakhar, 60 km (40 miles) from the capital, army and police sources said. They said 12 militants were also killed in the fighting, which started when the army responded to reports of insurgents gathering in the swamps and orchards in the area.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Civil war fosters small thaw in Israeli-Syrian relations
[Jerusalem Post] SOFIA, Bulgaria – Before protests demanding democracy broke out in Syria in 2011, ordinary Israelis had no meaningful contacts with ordinary Syrians.

The disintegration of the Syrian state has changed everything, including the view of many in the country toward the Jewish state. In interviews with The Jerusalem Post at two refugee camps in Sofia and in a hotel outside the city least week, Syrians expressed new perspectives on Israel.

“Israel is positive” because of its medical treatment of wounded Syrians on the Golan border, a man from Damascus, who declined to give his name, said. He thanked Bulgaria for its humanitarian help, pinpointing blame on the wealthy Gulf monarchy regimes as “countries that do not accept refugees.”

On a small scale, profound changes have created interactions between two peoples in a formal state of war. Col. Tarif Bader, chief medical officer for the IDF’s Northern Command, which provides vital health services to wounded Syrians, told the Los Angeles Times earlier this month, “We are saving the lives of our enemies.”
Takeaway: Matthew 5:43-48 example.

IDF Officer Shoots Arab Stone Thrower
[The Jewish Press] On Saturday, approximately 100 Arabs attacked a unit of IDF soldiers with rocks, near the town of Shaked in the Shomron. One of the soldiers, a senior officer from the Nachal-Haredi unit, shot one of the stone throwers in the knee. The stone thrower was evacuated for medical treatment.
Hat tip to the IDF officer looking after his men.
Time for a little Hachal Haredi celebration.

#1  Great link! The guy with the Mic is a fantastic would make a fine tummler.

I now own the word I have used it in a sentence that is nearly relevant to the topic at hand.

BTW, speaking of tummler have you heard the one about the mother whose son excitedly announces that he has been picked for the part of the Jewish husband in a school play. The mother replies, “You tell the teacher you want a speaking part.”

#3  People may say "Why did they shoot that kid? They were only throwing rocks. At most, rocks can only give you a bad bruise. Bullets can kill."

Except that with 100 people throwing rocks, it would be difficult to tell the difference between a rock and a grenade.

Israeli military intel: Hamas developing missiles ‘of higher quality’
[WorldTribune.com] TEL AVIV -- Israel’s military has determined that the Hamas regime was investing in developing and producing longer-range and accurate missiles and rockets in the Gaza Strip. Military sources said Hamas intensified production of medium- and long-range rockets after the mini-war with Israel in November 2012.
Investing in missile development are they? Are these not the same people [regime] who require billions of US and Western dollars in economic aid each year to feed and sustain their people ?

#1  Very odd, given that Egypt is destroying tunnels and clearing a no man's land on their side of the border because the generals are tired of Gaza's support of Muslim Brotherhood and Salafist/Al Qaeda in the Sinai jihadi activity. Will Hamas really start something serious with Israel when they have vengeful Egyptians on the other side?

Syria adds opposition peace talks delegates to 'terrorist list'
[Al Ahram] Syria has added opposition delegates at peace talks in Geneva to a "terrorist list" and seized their assets, including the house of one of them, anti-government negotiators and a diplomat said on Saturday.
Playing hardball while the opposition either exercises taqfiri beheadings or enjoys the dubious pleasures of being beheaded.
The opposition delegation only learnt of the decision when a copy of the Justice Ministry decision was leaked this week to the opposition website www.all4syria.com, the sources said.

The memorandum, issued by the Justice Ministry, says the assets had been frozen under a 2012 anti-terrorism law.
So it was all shipshape and legal. Can't argue with that.
The decision will further antagonise opposition members and their international backers after a second round of negotiations failed on Saturday to achieve any meaningful gains beyond an agreement to meet again at an unspecified date.

One diplomat said the opposition negotiators had discovered a few days ago that most of them were on a "terrorism list" of 1,500 activists and rebels opposed to Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Leveler of Latakia...
"When (opposition member) Suhair al-Atassi saw her name she realised she had lost her house. A tear dropped from her eye for a moment and she then returned to her combative self," said the diplomat, who was meeting the opposition negotiators in Geneva.

Asked why Damascus had put members of the opposition Nation Coalition umbrella group on its terrorism list and frozen their bank accounts, Syrian government delegate Bashar al-Jaafari said: "You are trying to terrorise me and you won't succeed."

He said the decision was made two months before the Geneva talks began. "This has nothing to do with the Geneva conference. Whoever refuses to fight terrorism is part of terrorism."
Didn't someone say something similar in recent years?
Members of the National Coalition make up the bulk of the opposition delegation to the talks, which opened on Jan. 22.

One delegate, Ahmad Jakal, said: "The regime wants to prove it can get to us personally. In its sick thinking, anyone who opposes it is a traitor and terrorist."

Brahimi: Syria Peace Talks Break Off, No New Date Set
[An Nahar] The U.N.'s Syria envoy said he was "very, very sorry" Saturday as peace talks in Geneva broke off with no progress made and no date set for a third round.

Just weeks after the warring parties sat down for the first time to seek a political settlement to the three-year conflict, a second round ended in acrimony.

"I'm very, very sorry," U.N. mediator Lakhdar Brahimi told news hounds in Geneva as he announced the break-off in talks.

"I think it is better that every side goes back and reflects, and takes their responsibility: do they want this process to continue or not?"

With no guarantee the parties will return to the negotiating table, the corpse count continued to mount in Syria where more than 136,000 have died and millions have been driven from their homes.

Two of Three Women in Seized Labweh Booby-Trapped Car Acquitted
[An Nahar] Two of the three women that were placed in durance vile
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
for transporting a booby-trapped car on the Arsal-al-Labweh road were acquitted on Saturday afternoon, the state-run National News Agency reported.

"State Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Saqr Saqr ordered the release of Hala Rayed and Khadijeh Audeh for not having any links with the incident," the NNA said.

However,
there's more than one way to skin a cat...
the third suspect, Joumana Hmayyed, was kept in jug, according to the news agency.

The army intercepted on Wednesday a booby-trapped vehicle on the Arsal-al-Labweh road in the Bekaa region.

The Army Command announced in a statement that the vehicle had arrived in Leb from Syria's Yabrud region.

Containing three women, the car was going to be transported to Beirut where it was to be handed over to would-be suicide-bombers.

Quoting military sources, LBCI television said the women confessed to plotting "a triple bombing during which the car and two jacket wallahs were supposed to blow up."
