Taliban urge Afghans to deal with US forces the same as Soviets
[DAWN] The Taliban are calling on Afghans to drive American forces out of their country, just like they say the USSR was defeated 25 years ago today.

In a statement on Saturday, the 25th anniversary of the Soviet withdrawal, Taliban front man Qari Yusef Ahmadi said the USSR's forces had killed innocent people and "destroyed our country," but that "all our nation stood against them and were able to defeat them."

Ahmadi said that instead of taking that as a lesson, Americans invaded -- making them "the same as yesterday's Soviets."

He urged Afghans to "deal with today's invaders as they dealt with yesterday's invaders," adding that "there is no difference between our jihad of yesterday and today."

NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It's headquartered in Belgium. That sez it all....
-led combat forces are due to withdraw from Afghanistan at the end of 2014.

Somalia and Ethiopia agree on information-sharing plan
GAROWE, Somalia -- Federal Government of Somalia and the neighboring country of Ethiopia have agreed on a new information-sharing plan during a bilateral talks in Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa on Friday, Garowe Online reports.

Prime Minister Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed Mohamed who arrived in Addis Ababa for official visit and Ethiopian leader Hailemarium Deselegn witnessed memorandum of understanding on media capacity building that was signed by Somalia and Ethiopia Information Ministers Mustafe Sheikh Ali Dhuhulow and Ridwan Hussein.

Speaking on Radio Muqdisho, Dhuhulow said that both sides agreed on a joint cooperation on the field of information: "Our bilateral discussions resulted in Ethiopia to source Somali National News Agency (SONNA) and Somalia to adopt reports from Ethiopian News Agency (ENA) and I am very hopeful about the implementation of that agreement".

He added that a six-month period series of programs would be prepared by Ethiopian and Somali journalists from the two countries irrespectively in an effort to ensure bolstering ties.

On the other hand, after holding discussions mainly covering the security prime Minister Deselegn reiterated Ethiopia's unwavering commitment to rebuilding the war-ravaged horn of Africa nation where terror threats still linger amid corruption allegations against President Hassan Sheik Mohamud's administration.

Deselegn stressed that stable Somalia and Ethiopia are of utmost priority for the two government when wrong and failed policies of past dictatorial regimes are left aside.

Reacting to Ethiopian-AMISOM forces operating in the southern regions of the country, Somalia Prime Minister on his side commended Addis Ababa for joining the war on the terror group of Al Shabaab.

The delegation led by Abdiweli and included Foreign Affairs Minister Abdirahman Du'alle Bayle Friday landed at Bole airport in Addis Ababa in response to an invitation from Ethiopia Prime Minister.

Egypt working to create buffer zone around Gaza border.
[Ynet] As part of new campaign to create buffer zone around Gaza, Egypt military forces launch Sinai operation, destroying tunnels, homes, and raiding villages serving terrorists, Palestinian news agency reports.

According to the report, 10 tunnels and seven homes were destroyed on Saturday as part of the new plan to create the buffer zone, which would extend 500 meters in some places, the report claimed. According to Ma'an report which cited an Egyptian security source, the campaign began with a military operation in the border town of Rafah, where tunnels leading into Gaza were targeted.

The security source added that the tunnels were destroyed and the homes they were located in were subsequently blown up.
We were reluctant to go D9 on them, but they've never been very good neighbors and they keep us up all night with their incessant gun sex and digging.

Or at least vee the Paleos to make sure nothing happens from their nominal territory to make the Israelis mad.

Yemen President Lashes Out at 'Below-Par' Security Services
You've got a Third World country there, buddy, heading downhill fast. Why the surprise?
[An Nahar] President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi on Saturday lashed out at the "below-par" performance of Yemen's security services, after 29 inmates including suspected al-Qaeda members beat feet from Sanaa central prison.

The prison break after an assault on Thursday unmasked a lack of improved security at the facility, despite vows by al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) chief Nasser al-Wuhayshi last year to free incarcerated members of his group.

Wuhayshi himself escaped in February 2006 from the political security prison in Sanaa with 22 other members of AQAP before being named the group's leader a year later.

Hadi on Saturday made a surprise visit to the interior ministry and the central prison where he was briefed on details of the assault, state news agency Saba reported.

The president, leading the country for an interim transitional period, "pointed out that terrorist acts couldn't have been at this level if it weren't for the below-par performance of the security services," Saba reported.

"Any visitor to a ministry or any such installation can easily judge the level of readiness and security even from outside the entrance," Hadi said at the interior ministry.

He called for "increased alertness" by security forces, "especially in Sanaa," Saba reported.

Security officials said a two-pronged assault on the prison began when an explosives-laden vehicle slammed into the eastern gate just after sunset.

Suspected al-Qaeda gunnies simultaneously attacked guards at the main entrance, creating a diversion that allowed some prisoners to escape through the hole.

Eleven security members were killed in the assault, according to officials.

Such large-scale assaults have become more frequent in Yemen, prompting analysts to warn of al-Qaeda penetration into security and military services.

Currently residing in the North Wazoo area. That is not a horn growing from the middle of his forehead, but a prayer bump, attesting to how devout he is...
has urged the Moslems in Bangladesh to wage an intifada (popular uprising) to confront the "crusader onslaught against Islam".
"Let's you and him fight."
Posted in Jihadology.net, the message alleged thousands of people were being killed in the streets of Bangladesh for protesting the "collusion of the anti-Islam secular government with a bunch of transgressing secularists".

CAIR Trying to Have Anti-Islamist Muslim Kicked Off Religious Freedom Panel
[CNSNews] Having failed in an earlier attempt to scupper the appointment of a prominent anti-Islamist Mohammedan to a statutory international religious freedom watchdog, the Council on American-Islamic Relations
... the Moslem Brüderbund's American arm ...
(CAIR) is actively trying to have him removed from the post.

CAIR, a controversial lobby group that describes itself as "America's largest Mohammedan civil liberties and advocacy organization," wants the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) to investigate its vice-chairman, M. Zuhdi Jasser, questioning his suitability to serve on a body promoting religious freedom.

CAIR has written twice in two weeks to USCIRF Chairman Robert George on the subject of Jasser, president of the non-profit American Islamic Forum for Democracy (AIFD).

On Tuesday, CAIR said AIFD receives funding from an independent foundation called the Abstraction Fund (PDF, 1.1 MB) which, it noted, also funds organizations "known for their active role in spreading anti-Islam prejudice."

These other "notorious Islamophobes" benefitting from the foundation, it said, included the Center for Security Policy, a 26 year-old Washington think tank; Islam specialist Daniel Pipes' Middle East Forum; terrorism expert Steven Emerson's Investigative Project on Terrorism (IPT); and Islam scholar and activist Robert Spencer's Jihad Watch.
Known evildoers, all. Or truth tellers, anyway.

Peace talks back to square one
[DAWN] Peace negotiators representing the government and Taliban looked utterly helpless when they met on Friday, a day after the deadly kaboom on a police van claimed by the outlawed Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP).

Both sides condemned Thursday's attack in Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
, which left 13 police commandos dead, and called upon the TTP to stop such attacks as they were hampering peace efforts.

In a hand-written statement issued after their sitting in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central...
House here, the four-member government committee categorically stated that if the TTP continued Karachi-like attacks, "peace dialogue cannot go ahead".

"Therefore, the Taliban immediately make a clear-cut announcement that they are shunning all activities which can spoil peace talks and follow up with concrete steps to ensure effective implementation on their declaration of ceasefire," it added.

All four members of the government team -- Irfan Siddiqui, Rahimullah Yousufzai, Rustam Shah Mohmand and Major Amir -- attended the meeting.

Talking to Dawn, Mr Mohmand said: "We have told them in no-nonsense term that if the TTP continues its debilitating attacks, there is absolutely no chance of the peace dialogue going forward."

He said the Taliban committee had promised to come up with a response from the TTP leadership in the next few days.

The Taliban committee agreed with the government side's suggestion for a ceasefire, but called upon the government to avoid any act which could adversely affect the grinding of the peace processor and cause unnecessary provocation. The two sides should renounce use of force.

Maulana Samiul Haq
...the Godfather of the Taliban, leader of his own faction of the JUI. Known as Mullah Sandwich for his habit of having two young boys at a time...
, Prof Mohammad Ibrahim and Maulana Yousuf Shah, representing the Taliban, attended the meeting. Maulana Abdul Aziz of Lal Masjid did not participate as he had announced last week that until the government agreed to impose 'true' Sharia in the country, he would not attend the committee meetings.

Maulana Yousuf Shah has not been nominated by the TTP; he only acts as a focal person of the TTP committee on behalf of Maulana Samiul Haq, chief of his own faction of the Jamaat Ulema-e-Islam
...the political wing of the Pak Taliban...
.

In the concluding line, the government team reiterated its stance that only after an effective end to the anti-grinding of the peace processor activities by the TTP, further steps would be taken to create an environment conducive to talks.

The effusiveness displayed by the negotiators from both sides at their first formal meeting on Feb 6 appeared to have faded away with the killing of police commandos. Neither was there any exchange of pleasantries in front of TV cameras nor did they speak positively about each other.

The two sides avoided talking to media outside the KP House. The media was given only a hand-written Urdu statement.

A virtually fleeing (in his car) Maulana Samiul Haq was asked a flurry of questions, but he only said the situation would improve in coming days. "There is no deadlock, I am hopeful the two sides will soon announce ceasefire."

However,
today is that tomorrow you were thinking about yesterday...
during the quick chat the Maulana criticised Irfan Siddiqui, special assistant to the prime minister on national affairs and coordinator of the government committee, for giving statements to the media about peace talks.

Talking to BBC earlier in the day, Mr Siddiqui expressed concern
...meaning the brow was mildly wrinkled, the eyebrows drawn slightly together, and a thoughtful expression assumed, not that anything was actually done or indeed that any thought was actually expended...
over the TTP accepting responsibility for the attack on coppers and vowing to carry out similar attacks in future. "We even didn't condemn recent terrorist attacks in which the TTP said it wasn't involved. However,
today is that tomorrow you were thinking about yesterday...
no positive signs are coming from the Taliban side," he regretted.

Talking to Dawn, another member of the government committee said that at the moment peace talks were heading nowhere. "We have a sitting member of the cabinet on our side while Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
has pledged in the National Assembly that our recommendations will be implemented. But on the other hand, the TTP committee has to seek Taliban leadership's endorsement for its decisions. Today we have asked them to get this anomaly resolved if they want to carry on with the grinding of the peace processor," he said.

Asked about reports that the TTP had sought withdrawal of army from South and North Wazoo, enforcement of Sharia and exchange of non-combatant prisoners between the two sides, the member said negotiations on these conditions would start only after the TTP stopped killing innocent people.

He said that after the Karachi bombing, the government had come under tremendous pressure to take a firm stance against the TTP.

He said the government committee was in constant touch with the prime minister, who is at present in Turkey.

Peace talks: Clerics demand immediate ceasefire from both sides
[DAWN] A gathering of about 40 holy mans and religious leaders has appealed to both the government and Talibs to immediately announce a ceasefire and pursue negotiations to restore peace in Pakistain.

In a joint statement issued by the Ulema and Mashaikh Convention which gathered in Lahore on Saturday, religious leaders discouraged the use of a military option and emphasised on dialogue as a durable solution for peace.

The gathering, which concluded in a press briefing led by coordinator of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain nominated talks committee Maulana Samiul Haq
...the Godfather of the Taliban, leader of his own faction of the JUI. Known as Mullah Sandwich for his habit of having two young boys at a time...
, consented on urging both sides to immediately announce ceasefire.

"Peace talks are the only viable solution...war can never bring peace," said Haq, flanked by several other religious leaders including Jamaat-e-Islami
...The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independent branch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores...
chief Munawar Hassan and leading holy man Allama Tahir Ashrafi.

"Big powers have witnessed the outcome of war in Afghanistan. A military operation will only hurl the country further towards destruction. The grinding of the peace processor should be made successful at all costs," he added.

Reading out the joint statement, Haq said that dialogue was the only solution to the problems being faced by the country. "We will have to unite to defeat the forces trying tot sabotage the grinding of the peace processor."

"We appeal to the Taliban to speak in the language of peace," said the joint statement, urging both sides to immediately announce a ceasefire.

The meeting reiterated its confidence in the peace talks committee headed by Maualana Samiul Haq.

Bilawal lashes out at 'stone-age' Taliban
[DAWN] Bilawal Baby Bhutto Zardari
...Pak dynastic politician, son of Benazir Bhutto and grandon of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. As far as is known, Bilawal has no particular talents other than being pretty and being able to memorize political slogans, but he had the good luck to be born into the right family and he hasn't been assassinated yet...
, the patron-in-chief of the Pakistain Peoples Party, on Saturday slammed the Taliban for trying to drag the country back to the "stone-age."

Addressing a gathering during the closing ceremony of a two-week cultural festival in his home province of Sindh, Bhutto also urged the country to rise up against the threats.

"The Taliban want to impose the law of terror in the country, but I want to tell them, if you have to live in Pakistain you will have to follow its constitution," he said.

"We don't accept the law of terrorists," he added. "Some people are trying to bring back the stone-age era in the country in the name of Islam."

"The forces of Evil should think of the time when the whole nation will stand against them," he said in Makli, around 100 kilometres north of Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...

"We are Mohammedans and the terrorist groups should not try to teach us Islam."

Nearly 7,000 people have been killed in the insurgency by the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP) since it began in 2007, according to an AFP tally.

The start of 2014 has seen a surge in Death Eater violence with more than 130 people killed.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
's government has been under fire from political opponents for failing to mount a strong response to the upsurge in attacks.

The government has for months said it favoured talks with the Taliban but 25-year-old Bilawal has spoken in favour of military action against them.

The Taliban's demands include the nationwide imposition of sharia law and an end to US drone strikes.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
'Religion Classes' for 200 Men from Syria's Homs
[An Nahar] Nearly 200 men evacuated from Syria's Homs city and held by security services will receive religion classes to "modify their incorrect interpretation of Islam", the provincial governor said Saturday.

Talal Barazi told Agence La Belle France Presse the 179 men in jug would receive religious instruction, along with support sessions from psychologists.

"Over a period of four days, while their files are being examined by the competent authorities, those who are still being held will receive religious instruction to modify their incorrect interpretation of Islam," he said.

He added that psychologists and sociologists would "offer their support to help with rehabilitation and members of the U.N. will give them courses on human rights
...which are usually entirely different from personal liberty...
".

Barazi said 179 boys and men aged between 15 and 55 were being held after operations to evacuate civilians from besieged areas of the Old City of Homs in central Syria.

He said a total of 390 fighting-age males had left Homs, with 211 released so far.

On Thursday, the U.N. said that 430 men and boys were tossed into the calaboose in all, with just 181 released so far.

The U.N. has expressed concern
...meaning the brow was mildly wrinkled, the eyebrows drawn slightly together, and a thoughtful expression assumed, not that anything was actually done or indeed that any thought was actually expended...
about the fate of the male evacuees, warning on Friday that Syria was on watch over their fate.

"We are consistently and continually calling on the government to ensure the safety and security of these people and to respect international and human rights law," U.N. refugee agency spokeswoman Melissa Fleming told news hounds.

Humanitarian operations that began last week have so far evacuated around 1,400 people from areas of Homs under a tight army siege for more than 18 months.

The United Nations
...an idea whose time has gone...
and Red Islamic Thingy have also distributed hundreds of food parcels to those who remain in the Old City.

Barazi said Saturday that "most of the humanitarian aid has been distributed", but was unable to specify whether aid distribution or evacuation of civilians would continue.

Before the operation began, an estimated 3,000 people were trapped inside rebel-held areas of the Old City, many surviving on olives and wild plants as food supplies dwindled.

Leb Forms Government After 10-Month Deadlock
[VOA News] Leb has announced a new Cabinet that includes a wide range of political groups, breaking months of bitter infighting, mostly over Syria's civil war.

Prime Minister Tamam Salam announced his 24-member national unity government on Saturday.

Parliament had designated the Sunni politician as prime minister in April last year. But rivalries between the Shi'ite Hezbollah-dominated March 8 coalition and the Sunni-led March 14 alliance had prevented Mr. Salam from forming a government.

Agreement was reached when the March 14 alliance agreed to withdraw its choice for interior minister after strong opposition from Hezbollah.

United Nations
...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks...
Secretary-General Ban ki-moon welcomed the Cabinet formation, saying the severity of Leb's security, humanitarian and economic issues should spur the government to act without delay to address these challenges.

Obama threatens new pressure on Assad regime
As Syrian peace talks in Geneva appeared to flounder, US President Barack Obama on Friday vowed to step up pressure on the regime of President Bashar Al Assad.
And this time he really, really means it!
Obama's remarks came as he hosted Jordan's King Abdullah II at the Sunnylands retreat in Palm Springs, California, to address issues including the flood of Syrian refugees into Jordan.

The US leader said both he and the Jordanian king "recognise that we can't just treat the symptoms" of the Syrian crisis.

"We're also going to have to solve the underlying problem -- a regime led by Bashar Al Assad that has shown very little regard for the well-being of his people. "We are going to need a political transition in that region."

"We don't expect to solve this any time in the short term so there are going to be some immediate steps that we have to take to help the humanitarian situation there," Obama said.

"There will be some intermediate steps that we can take to apply more pressure to the Assad regime, and we're going to be continuing to work with all the parties concerned to try to move forward on a diplomatic solution," he said, without specifying what those steps may be.

At the meeting, Obama pledged $1 billion in loan guarantees to Jordan, as well as a renewal of a five-year memorandum of understanding. The current five-year package, worth $660 million a year, expires in September.

The funds are aimed in part at helping Washington's Middle East ally cope with the flood of Syrian refugees and its loss of natural gas from Egypt, White House officials said.
Perhaps Jordan should talk with Israel. I hear the latter has lots of natural gas...
King Abdullah said the Syrian crisis and the rise of extremism are his country's primary concerns.

Jordan has borne the brunt of much of the humanitarian overflow, with nearly 600,000 Syrian refugees on its soil, straining its infrastructure and finances. The United States is the largest aid donor to Syrian refugees, so far donating $1.7 billion to the cause, according to the US Agency for International Development.
The refugees, to a man, woman and child, are all grateful of course. They sing our praises...
A senior administration official said that the $1 billion guarantee will make it easier for Jordan to access capital markets and borrow money.
As opposed to having the country work a little harder and raise the $1 billion itself...
"It's a signal to the markets of the strong confidence of the United States in Jordan, of our partnership, and of our intention to be there as a partner for Jordan in the long term," said the official.

Concerning Syria, Washington has been trying "to work with and press the Russians to understand that the status quo is not serving their interests either," the official said. "They are much closer to the parts of Syria than we are that are becoming increasingly ungoverned and dangerous."

UN urges access to Palestinian Yarmuk camp in Syria
The UN’s agency for Palestinian refugees UNRWA on Saturday urged renewed access to the Yarmuk camp in the Syrian capital Damascus, a week after operations to distribute aid were halted.
Perhaps we should put the UNRWA out of business. Let the Paleos figure out how to feed themselves. That would be one giant step towards nation-hood right there...
“We have been unable to distribute food in Yarmuk for over a week now, which is potentially disastrous for the besieged civilians there, trapped by the conflict and desperately dependent on UNRWA,” spokesman Chris Gunness said.

“UNRWA strongly appeals to the authorities and all concerned parties to allow the agency immediate and unrestricted humanitarian access to the civilian population inside Yarmuk.”

Much of the once-bustling Yarmuk camp, which was home to both Syrians and Palestinians, has been reduced to rubble by fighting, and just 18,000 Palestinians now remain of the 150,000 who lived there before the conflict.
How many of the 18,000 are hard boyz and gunnies?
The camp has been under a tight government siege since June, with food and medical supplies dwindling and dozens dying from hunger and lack of medical treatment.

After a deal reached in late December, UNRWA began distributing aid in the camp on January 18. Gunness said some 6,500 food parcels were handed out between then and February 7, when clashes erupted in the camp and distributions were halted.

“Those provisions will now be running out for those people fortunate enough to receive them,” he said. “The humanitarian needs of Yarmuk’s civilians remain enormous and UNRWA will continue to press all concerned to ensure that food deliveries are urgently resumed.”
