Several Taliban Death Eaters launched an attack at around 3:00AM in the Regi area of Mursa Qala district, provincial front man Daoud Ahamdi told TOLOnews Sunday.
He said the clash went on for four hours, with several Death Eaters fleeing the area as more security forces arrived in the area.
The Taliban announced in May it would increase its attacks on the Afghan and foreign forces as part of their "spring offensive" Al Farooq.
The group's last major coordinated attack was on a civilian hotel restaurant on the outskirts of Kabul a fortnight ago. Seven Taliban men entered the place late Thursday night and killed up to 18 people, mostly civilians.
[Tolo News] Eighteen non-combatants were killed and ten were maimed on Sunday in three separate blasts from landmines in Afghanistan's southern Kandahar province.
Hidden improvised bombs (IED) in the roads of Afghanistan have killed 29 civilians in the past three days, with at least a third of the victims being children.
On Sunday morning, twin blasts at one location killed 14 people in the Araghistan district of Kandahar, provincial police Chief Gen. Abdul Raziq said.
The first kaboom occurred when a civilian vehicle hit a roadside mine, killing and injuring the passengers, including women and kiddies. The second blast occurred when another group of civilians, riding on a tractor, went to the scene to help the dead and maimed and struck another roadside kaboom in the road, Raziq said.
Kandahar Media and Information Centre (KMIC) said on Twitter that nine other people were maimed by the twin blasts.
Four more people died on Sunday in the same district but in a separate kaboom when their car struck an IED in the road. A woman, a young girl and two men were killed, while one man was maimed, the KMIC said on Twitter.

Provincial governor front man Jawid Faisal confirmed the third blast and the number of casualties.
It comes as seven people died on Saturday and four died on Friday from hidden IEDs.

Residents said Unknown assailants attacked with a hand grenade on a home for the head of Somaliland's spy for Sool region, Arab Ibrahim, killing 1 and injuring three, all from the relatives of Mr. Ibrahim.
"At least one person dead and three others sustained serious wounds in a hand grenade attack in Las' anod city of northern Somalia," Witnesses said on Sunday.
Mr. Ibrahim was reported to have escaped the attack unhurt.
Somaliland security forces begun urgent investigations on the blast in the town, arresting ten people suspected over the attack, according to the locals, whom Shabelle Media contacted on the phone.
There is an alarming territorial dispute over the northern Somali regions of Sool, Sanaag and Cayn (SSC) between the autonomous Puntland ...a region in northeastern Somalia, centered on Garowe in the Nugaal province. Its leaders declared the territory an autonomous state in 1998. Puntland and the equally autonomous Somaliland seem to have avoided the clan rivalries and warlordism that have typified the rest of Somalia, which puts both places high on the list for Islamic subversion... ,Somaliland and the newly established Khaatumo state.
Las Anod town and its surrounding area has been the site of several major skirmishes in recent months between the self-declared Somaliland military and fighters loyal to Khaatumo state.

[Daily Nation (Kenya)] Sudanese security forces fired tear gas on Sunday after demonstrations broke out at the University of Khartoum, where nationwide protests against high prices began last month, a witness said.
"There are some demonstrations in the main campus," and authorities used gas to try to clear the area, he said, asking not to be identified.
He said "a few" people were protesting but could not give a more accurate number.
The university is where an unprecedented three weeks of national protests began on June 16, when students first voiced their opposition to high food prices.

(Sh. M. Network)-At least Three people are reportedly killed and several others were maimed on Sunday in a fierce battle between Somalia government troops backed by Æthiopian and Djibouti forces and Al shabab faceless myrmidons in central Somalia, reports said.
Witnesses said the fighting began at about 6:00 p.m. local time, after heavily armed Al shabab snuffies attacked on military positions inside Beledweyne and other neighborhoods controlled by the hapless Somali government and peacekeeping troops from the African Union ...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful... , mainly Djibouti forces.
"The Al shabab agents have attacked the city with mortars and rocked-propelled grenades (RPGs) and the government forces with Æthiopian and Djibouti troops repelled the attack and warded the fighters off from the area," said Abukar Ibrahim Dhakad, Somali military officer.
He added that three combatants from both warring sides have been killed during the attack.
The fighting involved heavy artillery and mortar fires which were set throughout the city before the combat started overnight between the rival sides.There were some reports that several civilians were maimed in both government- and myrmidon-held areas in the region.
Al shabab commanders are yet to release any comments on their ambush attack in Beleweyne, a town which sits just 206 miles (332 km) north of Mogadishu and fell On December 31, 2011, to the Transitional Federal Government who retook control of the city from the Al-Shabaab ... Harakat ash-Shabaab al-Mujahidin aka the Mujahideen Youth Movement. It was originally the youth movement of the Islamic Courts, now pretty much all of what's left of it. They are aligned with al-Qaeda but operate more like the Afghan or Pakistani Taliban... myrmidons.

[Al Ahram] An Al-Qaeda offshoot holding seven Algerian diplomats hostage in lawless northern Mali said Sunday it had broken off negotiations for their release.
The hostages, a consul and six colleagues, were seized on April 5 in Gao, northern Mali, as several gangs descended on the region following a coup in the capital Bamako.
"We have broken off negotiations for the release of the Algerian hostages," the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO) said in a statement sent to AFP.
"Algeria is trying to stall for time. Our movement is ready to take responsibilities if it tries to free these hostages by force.
"We are maintaining our claims. The Algerian government's intermediaries have received our message," added the statement signed by its front man Adnan Abu Walid Sahraoui.
The kidnappers have demanded 15 million euros for the release of the Algerians. When negotiations failed on May 8, they gave a 30-day deadline for Algiers to fulfill the demands before they would kill the hostages.
In June, they said progress was being made in the negotiations.
The group is also holding three European aid workers -- a Spanish man, a Spanish woman and an Italian woman -- who were captured at the end of October 2011 from a refugee camp in western Algeria.
The jihadists want 30 million euros as price for their release.
On Sunday, the group also said that more "fighters" were joining their "pursuit of jihad."
"Our Mauritanian, Tunisian, Malian and Sahrawi brothers turned out in large numbers to support jihad," the group said, without giving figures.
Together with Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and Ansar Dine, MUJAO is one of three Islamist groups that currently controls northern Mali, which they seized with the help of Tuareg rebels.

[Al Ahram] Gunmen killed a federal senator and a state politician in Nigeria's troubled Plateau state on Sunday after the two attended a mass burial for the victims of an earlier attack, an official said.
"The senator representing Plateau north, Gyang Dantong, and the majority leader of the state assembly, Gyang Fulani, were bumped off today by Fulani herdsmen," said Pam Ayuba, front man for the state's governor.
Asked about the motivation for the attacks, Ayuba said the Fulani were likely inspired by their resentment for the state's Christian politicianship.
He added that the two were killed shortly after attending the mass burial for the victims of a Saturday raid, also blamed on the Fulani, a tribe made up of Moslem herdsmen.
Plateau state falls in Nigeria's so-called "Middle Belt" region, dividing the country's mainly Moslem north from its mostly Christian south.
The area has in recent years been hit by waves of sectarian violence.
After the burial, the officials went to a reception at the home of another local leader in the state's Gashis district, roughly 90 kilometres (56 miles) from the capital Jos, Ayuba said.
"The Fulani herdsmen raided the house...they shot (the politicians) and some others but the key people who bit the dust are the senator and the majority leader," he explained, saying he did not know the total number of casualties.
Another federal politician "escaped death by a whisker," he added.
Asked about the motivation for the attacks, Ayuba said the Fulani were likely inspired by their resentment for the state's Christian politicianship.
The two victims of the Sunday attack were members of the mostly Christian Birom ethnic group, as were the 23 people killed in the Saturday raid.

[Saudi Gazette] Raids and reprisal attacks have left 37 people dead in Christian villages near a Nigerian city where authorities have struggled to contain religious violence, authorities said Sunday.
Mustapha Salisu, front man for a special task force made up of coppers and soldiers deployed in the area to curb years of violence, said assailants launched "sophisticated attacks" on several villages near Jos early Sunday.
"They came in hundreds," said Salisu, "Some had (police) uniforms and some even had bulletproof vests."
He said the special force fought back for hours and lost two coppers in the battle.
He said 14 non-combatants were killed in the raids and that the task force killed 21 assailants.
"More than 100 people have been displaced," said Andronicus Adeyemo, an official with the Nigerian Red Thingy.
Authorities declined to comment on who they suspect, but similar raids have been blamed on Moslem herdsmen in the past.
Mark Lipdo, who runs a Christian advocacy group known as the Stefanos Foundation, gave a list of the 13 villages where he got reports of attacks. He said they were all Christian. He blamed Moslem herdsmen of the Fulani ethnic group for the attacks.

The capital of the formerly independent South Yemen, Aden, was cautiously calm on Sunday, a day after a gathering by separatists commemorating the North's seizure of the south in 1994 turned into a gunbattle.
Two protesters were killed and one man was left "clinically dead" in the festivities which took place in Aden's Mansura district, a medical official from Al-Naqib hospital told AFP.
Further east, in the town of Seyun in Hadramawt province, one protester was killed and four others were maimed on Saturday when police opened fire on another group of demonstrators, activists said.
Meanwhile, ...back at the chili cook-off, Chuck and Manuel's rivalry was entering a new and more dangerous phase... [Yemen Post] Yemen has demanded the United States to end flying of US drones over towns that have been retaken from Al-AQaeda capture, political sources said on Sunday.
The sources said the US agreed to temporary suspend the flying of its drones over Yemeni towns.
According to an Emirati newspaper, Al-Khaleej, Yemen and the United States agree to end war against Al-Qaeda in those Yemeni areas cleansed from the thugs. The sources further said that the Yemeni government told the US Ambassador to Yemen Gerald Feierstein its refusal to the continuity of drone raids.
A suspected U.S. drone strike killed last Tuesday two al-Qaeda beturbanned goons in a car in Yemen's south.

The region was a base to the Aden-Abyan Islamic Army terrorist group until it dropped the name and joined al-Qaeda. Its capital is Zinjibar. In March 2011, al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula declared the governate an Islamic Emirate after seizing control of the region. The New York Times fastidiously reported that those in control, while Islamic hard boyz, are not in fact al-Qaeda, but something else that looks, tastes, smells, and acts the same. Yemeni government forces launched an effort to re-establish control of the region when President-for-Life Saleh was tossed and the carnage continues... governorate.
More than 150,000 Abyan residents were displaced last year after fleeing the war. They are currently living in shelters in neighboring Aden and Lahj provinces.

Since June 26th Mexican Army and naval units have seized in several counternarcotics operations a total of 7884.942 kilograms of marijuana, 4.53 kilograms of glass methamphetamine, 171.44 kilograms of cocaine and five kilograms of marijuana seeds, according to data provided by official Mexican news sources.
A Mexican Army unit with the 4th Military Zone located a vehicle containing guns and munitions June 25th near the village of Maycoba in Yecora municipality in Sonora. Soldiers found three rifles, one 40mm grenade launcher attachment, two 40mm grenades, 16 weapons magazines and 575 rounds of ammunition.
On June 30th in Yecora municipality in Sonora, an army unit with the Mexican 4th Military Zone located a vehicle containing drugs and other contraband. Soldiers found 320 kilograms of marijuana, one handgun, one truck, one trailer, one motorcycle and tactical gear.
An army unit with the Mexican 9th Military Zone found a hidden synthetic drug laboratory in Sinaloa state July 3rd. The find was made near El Rancho La Palma in Sanalona Sindicatura in Culiacan municipality, where soldiers found 1.7 metric tons of solid material, among them methamphetamine, caustic soda, sodium acetate and tartaric acid. A total of 1,341 liters of liquid substances including methamphetamine, mercury, ethanol, acetic anhydride, acetone, hydrochloric acid and methylamine were found. A total of 11 reactors, 13 burners, 29 tanks of gas and other contraband were seized during the raid as well.
A Mexican Army unit with the 34 Military Zone detained two unidentified suspects and seized contraband including drugs and guns in Quintana Roo June 26th. Contraband seized included 1.63 kilograms of marijuana, 60 grams of cocaine, 0.530 kilograms of glass methamphetamine, five rifles, one handgun, 181 rounds of ammunition, 58 weapons magazines, nine scales, six sealers for nylon bags, 9,800 plastic bags and one vehicle.
On June 29th, an army unit on patrol with the Mexican 34th Military Zone found drugs in Isla Azul colony in Cancun, Quintana Roo, including 1.6 kilograms of cocaine, 50 grams of glass, and 5.5 kilograms of marijuana.
A Mexican Army unit provided support for Procuraduria General de la Republic (PGR) or attorney general agents in Coral del Mar colony on the Rosarito to Ensenada highway in Playas de Rosarita municipality in Baja California July 6th where a small sailboat was seized containing 502 kilograms of marijuana in 320 packages.
A separate Mexican Army patrol in Playa de Rosarito municipality turned up a second small boat and some vehicles. Seized during the raid were 169.84 kilograms of cocaine in 150 packages, 56 grams of crystal methamphetamine, 0.442 kilograms of marijuana, two rifles, one handgun, three weapons magazines, 307 rounds of ammunition, one boat with outboard motor and five vehicles.
A Mexican Army unit with the 8th Military Zone exchanged gunfire with armed suspects July 4th in Matamoros, Tamaulipas. The unit was on patrol in the area when it came under small arms fire. Soldiers with the unit returned fire and ended the firefight. Three armed suspects were detained. Four rifles, 24 weapons magazines, 1,325 rounds of ammunition and one vehicle were also seized.
An army unit with the Mexican 8th Military Zone killed four armed suspects when soldiers came under small arms fire in San Miguel Villas colony in Nuevo Laredo in Tamaulipas. Seized in the aftermath were three rifles, one 40mm grenade launcher, three 40mm grenades, 24 .223 caliber weapons magazines, 530 .223 caliber rounds of ammunition, and one stolen vehicle.
A Mexican Army unit with the 41st Military Zone located a hidden drug laboratory in Jalisco state July 5th. The find was made in Autlan de Navarro municipality where soldiers found nine reactors, 12 metal and plastic containers, 67 200-liter drums, 3,000 liters of toluene in 15 containers, 2,500 kilograms of caustic soda in 100 bags, one generator and five kilograms of marijuana seeds.
An Army unit with the Mexican 8th Military Zone located more than two metric tons of marijuana in Tamaulipas state July 7th. The unit was on patrol in Miguel Aleman municipality when it found 2.197 metric tons of marijuana in 500 packages hidden in the bush.
A Mexican Army unit with the 43rd Military Zone detained one unidentified individual and seized drugs at a military checkpoint in Michoacan state July 4th. The location of the checkpoint was on the Morelia to Lazaro Cardenas highway near Mugica municipality, where a passenger bus was stopped and searched. Soldiers turned up four kilograms of glass methamphetamine in seven packages. The bus had a terminus in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas.
An army unit with the Mexican 27th Military Zone located a camp in Guerrero state July 5th, seizing guns and drugs. The camp was located near the village of La Joya in Acapulco municipality, where soldiers found undisclosed quantities of marijuana and cocaine, 10 rifles, 34 weapons magazines, 1,915 rounds of ammunition, three stolen vehicles and tactical gear.
Mexican naval units with the 4th Naval Region based in Guayamas, Sonora intercepted suspects aboard two boats sailing northward, which had aboard what turned out to be almost five metric tons of marijuana. Suspects aboard the boats were observed tossing contraband overboard. The captains of the boats then attempted to flee the scene. Four Mexican Navy boats and two aircraft in the area were used to intercept the contraband and the suspects. A total of 4.86 metric tons of marijuana were seized and five suspects were detained.

Gunmen killed seven security personnel at an army encampment close to Islamabad on Monday, hours after a demonstration against the resumption of NATO supply convoys passed through the area. The camp was attacked from a bridge over the river Chenab, close to the industrial city of Wazirabad.
Hours earlier, thousands from the Defense Council of Pakistan, a coalition of right-wing and hardline Islamist groups, crossed the bridge on a "long march" from Lahore to Islamabad to protest against the reopening of NATO supply routes to Afghanistan.
A statement from the military said, "At least seven security personnel including a police official embraced shahadat (martyrdom) and five others were injured due to firing by unknown assailants near Wazirabad."
According to the statement, a military rescue party had camped by the river to look for the body of a pilot missing in a helicopter crash in May, and they came under attack from a bridge.
A senior security official said, "The exact number of attackers is not known but they came by motorbike and sprayed bullets on the troops from the bridge. It is highly likely that the attackers belonged to a banned religious outfit, which is a hand in glove with Taliban."
He added, "Nobody has so far claimed responsibility of the attack but if we follow the pattern of the attack, it looks similar to assaults that these outfits have been carrying out in different cities."
The protest march convoy of thousands in buses, trucks and cars stopped for the night in the town of Gujrat, across the river Chenab from Wazirabad, and they were expected to reach Islamabad on Monday.
[Dawn] Three young workers of the Ahl-e-Sunnat Wal Jamaat, two of them brothers, were rubbed out in an attack on their auto-mechanic shop in Surjani Town on Saturday that also left a man maimed in what appeared to be part of the ongoing sectarian killings, police and ASWJ sources said.
The area police said some four gunnies on two cycle of violences pulled up outside Hafiz Autos in Sector 7-A and two of them fired shots at the young men who were busy in their routine work. The firing sparked panic in the congested locality.
"After the guns fell silent, the people found four young men lying badly maimed in and outside Hafiz Autos," said Inspector Shabbir Hussain, the SHO of the Surjani Town cop shoppe. "All the four maimed were later moved to hospital, but before reaching any health facility, three of them -- Waqas, Hamza and Saad -- died from the wounds."
He said the attackers had used 9mm and 30-bore pistols and the Sherlocks found more than 15 casings of spent bullets at
the crime-scene.
Hamza and Saad were brothers and Waqas worked at their shop, he said, adding that all victims were in their middle and late 20s, who had been running the shop for over a decade.
"Wounded Talha has been shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where he is also said to be in a critical condition," he added.
A front man for the ASWJ condemned the incident and accused the government and the city's security administration of being biased against the party.
"We keep conveying our concerns about the security of our workers and leaders to police authorities and senior government officials, but no step has been taken in this regard," he said. "More than a dozen ASWJ workers have fallen prey

A transporter and a trader were also bumped off in separate parts of the city on Saturday, police said.
They said gunnies attacked a van near the Dakkhana traffic intersection in Liaquatabad early in the morning when it was headed to the new Sabzi Mandi off the Superhighway.
"Two men on a motorbike were seen firing at the van," said Inspector Ejaz Qaimkhani, SHO of the Liaquatabad cop shoppe, quoting eyewitnesses. "There were more than a dozen passengers in the van. Only the driver, identified as
42-year-old Mohammedan Khan, sustained a fatal bullet wound."
He said the victim was a resident of Karnaal Basti in Pir Bukhari Colony. He ran his van between old and new wholesale vegetable markets for traders. The police suspected personal enmity behind the incident.
"We have talked to the family, who accuse a group of people of involvement in the firing. The two sides have some old dispute, including some monetary issue," added the SHO.
In Gulistan-e-Jauhar, the owner of a juice centre was found rubbed out near his home. The area police said 35-year-old Ali Madad was found rubbed out near Kamran Chowrangi early in the morning.
"The victim was at home when he received a phone call at midnight," said Inspector Kanson Dean, SHO of the Gulistan-e-Jauhar cop shoppe.
"He left home in his car telling the family that he was going to see a friend. After an hour when the family tried to contact him, his cellphone was switched off and after sunrise his body was found abandoned near his home bearing two bullet wounds."
He said the victim ran a juice centre on the main Sharea Faisal and his murder appeared to be the result of some personal
enmity though the family denied the victim had any known enemy.

A paramilitary ranger was gunned down and a villager seriously injured while attending a wedding party in Pattani province on Sunday. The incident occurred at about 11 a.m. in front of more than 100 guests in broad daylight.
Police said while Sgt-Maj Manase Yuso was sitting at a table with his wife and other villagers at the wedding party in Rangae district, a terrorist man walked up to him and fired one shot to his head at a point-blank range with a 9 mm handgun, killing him instantly.
When a villager, Sainuding Waeha, rushed up to help Sgt-Maj Manase, another terrorist attacker standing not far away fired two shots at him with an 11 mm pistol, hitting him in the ribcage. Sainuding was seriously injured.
The two terrorists assailants, who mingled with guests before the shootings, fled on a motorcycle.
The Philippines needs 48 F-16 jet fighters, four to six mini submarines, more armed frigates and corvette-size combat vessels and minesweepers if it is to have a credible military defense capability, the Center for a New American Security said on Friday. The Philippines' Armed Forces has been struggling to get financing for its modernization program for over two decades, leaving its Air Force without a single jet fighter interceptor since 2005 and the Navy with old warships, some of them of World War II vintage.

armed frigates and small fast attack boats make the most sense for them. their problem is stopping China from taking every square inch if ocean off their coast.

I don't think the F16s are a good idea: yes, those birds still out-class anything the Chinese have. When flown by superb pilots. Which the Filipinos likely don't have, since they haven't had any jet interceptors since 2005.
Better to get some advanced trainer jets now and work on growing a cadre of pilots.

The Philippines have the same problem the US currently has, to many government crooks ripping of the tax payers. On an individual basis they make excellent fighters, and their military is great at scrounging adapting and carrying on. Possibly it would be best to "hire" a Philippine force rather than just giving them equipment and money that would be looted by the various families and factions that control the place. There are reform efforts going on there but it is an uphill battle and the last thing they need and the US is to get ripped off by the Chinese.

[Dawn] Syrian forces pounded Aleppo ...For centuries, Aleppo was Greater Syria's largest city and the Ottoman Empire's third, after Constantinople and Cairo. Although relatively close to Damascus in distance, Aleppans regard Damascenes as country cousins... and Deir Ezzor provinces as at least 35 people were killed on Sunday across the country, among them 17 civilians, a watchdog reported.
The regime forces, under the cover of heavy shelling, attempted to storm the rebel strongholds of Qusayr and Rastan in the central province of Homs, triggering fierce festivities, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
"Fierce festivities took place before dawn between regime forces and rebels in the vicinity of Qusayr, accompanied by heavy shelling on Qusayr and neighbouring villages as the regime tried to regain control," Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP by phone.
In Rastan, "the army carried out shelling in an attempt to storm the city and clashed with fighters from the rebel combat battalions, forcing the government troops to retreat," he said.
Both towns are strongholds of the rebel Free Syrian Army.
Local Coordinating Committees, made up of anti-regime activists on the ground, said kabooms rocked Qusayr, located near the border with Leb, amid random shelling and shooting.
The army "renewed shelling on residential areas using artillery and tanks," the LCC reported.
Regime forces also shelled villages in the eastern province of Deir Ezzor, killing five people, including three children, as well as Aazaz town in the northern province of Aleppo and neighbourhoods of the central city of Homs, according to the Observatory.
The highest casualties were reported in central province of Hama, where six people were killed in gunfire in the village of Sahel al-Ghab, it added.
In addition, nine regime troops were killed in festivities with rebels in the provinces of Daraa, Deir Ezzor and Homs, the watchdog said.
The violence followed a bloody day in which 77 people were killed on Saturday, among them 39 civilians, 25 soldiers and 13 rebels.
More than 17,000 people, including 11,815 civilians, have been killed in Syria since the outbreak of the revolt in March 2011, the Observatory reported Saturday.
The total also includes 4,316 members of the army and security services and 881 deserters, Abdel Rahman told AFP.
Rebels who are not army defectors are included in the civilian toll.
