US and France 'join fighting' against al-Shabab
[Sydney Morning Herald] Foreign military forces have joined the offensive against the al-Shabab militant group in Somalia as Kenyan troops advanced towards the rebel stronghold of Kismayu, a Kenyan military spokesman, Major Emmanuel Chirchir, said.

The US or France, or possibly both, had stepped up airstrikes in the past few days, killing al-Shabab militants, he said. The French navy has also shelled rebel positions from the sea, Kenyan officials said.

However, the US and France have not confirmed involvement in Somalia.

One dead, 13 injured in second city blast
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] At least one person was killed Monday evening and 13 others injured in a second kaboom to hit Nairobi in 24 hours.

The 8pm kaboom was believed to have been a grenade hurled at a moving matatu near a crowded terminus between Race Course and Landhies roads in Nairobi.

The injured were taken to Kenyatta National Hospital for treatment as security officers drawn from the General Service Unit and the police cordoned off the scene opposite the former Jack and Jill Supermarket.

The covered body of the dead person was still at the scene when the Nation team arrived.

Witnesses said the grenade was thrown at a matatu full of passengers, but bounced off its window and went kaboom! in a crowd of people rushing to board buses.

A police officer, who sought anonymity, said they had collected the remains of the bomb, which they identified as a hand grenade.

The Kaka matatu terminus serves the Kiambu, Githunguri and Ndumberi routes and is close to St Peter Claver's Church, the Salvation Army Church and is only a few metres from the normally crowded OTC stage, which serves matatus to Nairobi's Eastlands.

The last kaboom at the OTC was the failed liquidation attempt against then popular Nyandarua North MP JM Kariuki in 1975.

The kaboom came hardly 24 hours after another hand grenade was hurled into a night club along Mfangano Lane in the city, injuring 14 people.

One of those injured in the second blast was taken to theatre in bad state. Most of the victims sustained injuries on their legs.

Following the two kabooms, Internal Security PS Francis Kimemia announced a ban on fireworks displays during Diwali and Christmas festivities.

A major crackdown on illegal Somali immigrants was also under way in the country on Monday.

Arrests were reported in Malindi and Nakuru with some of those seized already charged in court.

Libyan Official Says Gadhafi Buried
[ABC News] A Misrata military council official said Moammar Qadaffy,
... who is now cavorting happily with Himmler and Heydrich...
his son Muatassim and a top aide were buried at dawn Tuesday in a secret location, with a few relatives and officials in attendance.

In a text message shown to The News Agency that Dare Not be Named, front man Ibrahim Beitalmal said Islamic prayers were read over the bodies. The information could not be independently verified.

The bodies of Qadaffy, his son Muatassim and former Defense Minister Abu Bakr Younis had been held in cold storage in the port city of Misrata since the dictator and members of his entourage were captured near his hometown of Sirte on Thursday. Qadaffy and Muatassim were captured alive, with some injuries, but died in unclear circumstances later that day.

Killing Frenzy in Hodeidah
[Yemen Post] Medical sources in Hodeidah reported 6 casualties, one of them a man at death's door, after they were shot by snipers at anti-regime rally in the western city of Hodeidah, on Sunday evening.

Witnesses told the Yemen Post that snipers were hiding in buildings, opening fire onto protesters as they marched through the streets of Hodeidah, demanding the immediate departure of President President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh.
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...
Witnesses added that the snipers showered them by bullets as they shot from several places at once, injuring 6 demonstrators.

Medical sources also said that one of the maimed was now on a critical state, stressing that he would most certainly die.

Others were maimed on their back and shoulders.

The Central Security Forces which were present at the demonstration idly stood by not doing anything.
Protesters eventually came face to face with thugs, throwing stones at them.

UN envoy Arrives in Sana'a
[Yemen Post] As President-for-Life Saleh
... exemplifying the Arab's propensity to combine brutality with incompetence...
seems to be stuck in between a rock and a hard place, having to not only face an increasing popular uprising but also the disapproval of most of his formers international allies, he is claiming to want to negotiate with the Opposition.

Following the adoption of a UN Security Council resolution demanding his immediate resignation from the presidency, Saleh announced through his front man, al-Ganadi that he welcomed the decision adding he would react "positively" to the UN wishes.

Today, he welcomed a UN envoy, assuring all parties that he is ready to sit down and talk to his opponents.
"The Yemeni president... expressed his readiness to sit down immediately at the dialogue table with the Joint Meeting Parties (opposition parties) and its partners to complete the dialogue over the operational mechanism for the (Gulf) initiative as quickly as possible and to reach the final signing of the initiative and its immediate implementation, leading to early presidential elections on a date agreed upon by all," said a statement carried by the Yemeni news agency SABA.

Despite this new change of tone and Saleh's apparent willingness to comply with his people and the UN wishes, many politicians on both sides remain skeptical since he made similar claims in the past, always debunking at the last minute.

Furthermore, this new round of negotiations comes amidst further attack on protesters and violent shelling campaigns against troops loyal to the revolution.

As the UN envoy is meeting up with President President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...
, his armed forces are pounding the southern city of Taiz with mortar shells in broad day light, bringing more terror and destruction to its inhabitants.
Yesterday, several people died in the capital, either shot down by snipers or struck by shells in their home.

In such a climate, one can wonder how ever in the world one could hope to negotiate a peaceful transfer of power.

Mexican Security Forces kill 4 bad guys in western Chihuahua -- UPDATED X2
exclusive from RantburgFor a map, click here. For a map of Chihuahua state, click here. New information from Nota Roja including identity of the four suspects killed and an inventory of arms seized

By Chris Covert

Four armed suspects were hunted and shot to death by Mexican security forces in a remote western Chihuahua town Sunday, according to Mexican news accounts.

The suspects were identified as José Roberto Méndez Villagrän 24, Ivän Ramos Cruz de 18, Fermín Gonzälez de 23 and Noé Arturo Juärez Rascón de 36. All four had been shot in the head.

The suspects killed were apparently four of several drug gang members who spent the better part of a day drinking and intimidating residents of San Juanito in the Sierra Tarahumara sector of western Chihuahua.

The suspects entered the town Saturday and immediately kidnapped three municipal police officers and then went on a drinking binge threatening local residents with firearms said to be heavy caliber weapons. One of the suspects reportedly carried a 0.50 caliber Barrett rifle used in NATO countries as well as in Mexico as a long range sniper rifle, but with an apparent antiarmor and antiaircraft capability.

The remaining municipal police were unable to intervene. Latest national reports suggest the three police officers who were kidnapped were taken from San Juanito. Their fate is unknown.

In a press statement Monday Chihuahua Governor Cesar Duarte confirmed the incident at San Juanito to local press, but did not mention the three abducted police officers.

Sunday at noon, a security force comprising Chihuahua state police agents and Mexican Army units entered San Juanito and began to search for the suspects.

The ensuing gunfight last 20 minutes. The armed suspects fled the town aboard three pickup trucks. A subsequent search of the area turned up the three vehicles at an intersection with the four dead men aboard. Reports say a police agent intercepted and fired on the suspects. It is unclear if the four dead suspects had been hit in San Juaniito, or if they were killed by the police agent.

Weapons seized following the gun battle include one 0.50 caliber Barrett rifle, one YHM AR15 assault rifle model YHM-15, one Colt AR15 model Match Target, one Romarm brand AK-47 assault rifle and one .308 caliber rifle PTR-91 brand (G-3 semi automatic). Also seized include 333 rounds of ammunition, 14 weapons magazines one bipod and one rifle scope, for the Barrett.

A GMC Sierra was also seized. Seized materials were moved to an army base in Creel, about 10 kilometers south of San Juanito.

Reports say an earlier incident took place this year where five apparent drug gang members were killed by rival shooters.
Missed that one. Sorries...
San Juanito was also the area where in August of 2010 100 members of the Sinaloa drug cartel entered the town in force, stayed for about six hours before leaving. No shootings were reported during that invasion. Retrospectively, the invasion may have been to "fly the flag" in the area.
To read the Rantburg report on the August 2010 invasion of San Juanito click here.
The Mexican Sierras in western Chihuahua, eastern Sonora, western Durango and eastern Sinaloa states, dubbed the Golden Triangle" by Mexican press, is where a number of indigenous Indian communities reside. Many of those in those communities whch are under control of drug gangs, are treated like medieval serfs using murder, intimidation and arson.

The Taramhumara sector of far western Chihuahua is home to the Tarahumara Indians whom have direct ancestral links to the original Aztec of central Mexico. As with nearly every indigenous community in the Mexican Sierras, the residents are isolated by choice from the rest of Mexico. Drug cartels such as the Sinaloa cartel and the Juarez cartel take advantage of that and press those communities into growing drugs.

San Juanito is roughly 20 kilometers north of Bocoyna the seat of Bocoyna municipality. San Juanito is also 30 kilometers due south of Mexican Federal Highway 16 which runs from Chihuahua, Chihuahua, to Hermosillo, Sonora.

Another security incident took place in even more remote Jicomorachi in Uruachi municipality 10 kilometers due west of San Juanito last March. Four armed suspects died and several homes were torched in an apparent intergang feud last March.

US teen in 'Jihad Jane' case pleads not guilty
[Emirates 24/7] A high school honors student pleaded not guilty
"Wudn't me."
Monday to charges he helped the U.S. terrorist called "Jihad Jane" raise money and recruits for a Mohammedan holy war.

The 18-year-old Mohammad Hassan Khalid entered the plea at his first public court appearance since his July 6 arrest.

The reed-thin, serious-looking young man appeared older than his years. He had no family or friends in the Philadelphia courtroom. His parents, legal U.S. residents from Pakistain who had pushed their four children to excel in school, were working, a defense lawyer said.

Federal prosecutors allege that Khalid tried to recruit men to wage a holy war in Europe and South Asia, and women with passports who could travel there. He had met a middle-aged woman, Colleen LaRose, in online chat rooms when he was about 15, according to last week's indictment. LaRose was being watched by the FBI after posting YouTube videos in which she called herself "Jihad Jane" and vowed to kill or die for the jihadist cause.

LaRose, 46, has pleaded guilty to plotting to kill a Swedish artist who had offended Mohammedans. She faces a possible life sentence.

Khalid's defense lawyer, Jeffrey M. Lindy, believes LaRose helped the FBI build its case against the teenager.

"I absolutely think she rolled over in a heartbeat (against him)," Lindy said after the arraignment.
Not that there's anything wrong with that...
Khalid faces a 15-year prison term and deportation to his native Pakistain if convicted.

Lindy questioned the government's interpretation of Khalid's online posts.

"I think they assume a much more nefarious and sinister connotation than what's really there," he said.

U.S. Attorney Jennifer Arbittier Williams declined to comment after the hearing. A judge set a Dec. 13 trial date, but that is almost certain to be pushed back given the complexity of the case.

Khalid is charged in the indictment along with an Algerian man, 46-year-old Ali Charaf Damache, who remains locked away in Ireland.

Saudi envoy murder plot suspect pleads not guilty
[Emirates 24/7] The Iranian-American accused of being the central figure in a plot involving senior Iranian officials to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to Washington pleaded not guilty
"Wudn't me."
Monday in a New York court.

Manssor Arbabsiar, who lived for years in Texas where he worked as a used car salesman and is accused by US authorities of plotting to get Mexican gangsters to carry out the attack, entered his plea during a five-minute hearing in federal court.

Dressed in a dark brown and blue prison smock and looking tired, Arbabsiar spoke in accented English, responding "not guilty" when the court asked how he was to plead.

He said nothing more during the hearing, after which he was led, without handcuffs, back to his cell.

Arbabsiar, a naturalized US citizen aged 56, was formally indicted on October 20 along with co-defendant Gholam Shakuri, whom US authorities said is an Iran-based operative of the Quds force, an elite arm of Iran's Revolutionary Guards. Shakuri remains on the lam.

Tehran has strongly denied
No, no! Certainly not!
any involvement in what the US says was a plot by the Quds force to kill the Saudi envoy by hiring assassins from a Mexican narco mob for ê1.5 million.

The explosive case has ratcheted up tensions between Iran and the United States, with US President Barack B.O. Obama demanding answers and "accountability" from Tehran if it was involved in the alleged plot.

According to the indictment, Arbabsiar and Shakuri conspired to "kill the ambassador to the United States of Soddy Arabia, while the ambassador was in the United States."

To set up the alleged hit, Arbabsiar arranged for the wiring of ê100,000 to the United States as a down payment, the indictment says.

'Hit man' held in DHA
[Dawn] Police on Sunday claimed to have tossed in the clink another suspected assassin in the posh neighbourhood of Defence Housing Authority.

Though the Clifton police claimed that the suspect was tossed in the clink following an exchange of gunfire, neither the suspect nor any policeman was hurt in the encounter.

A duty officer at the Clifton cop shoppe said that suspect Zakir Husain alias Agha Hussain was tossed in the clink following an encounter on main Khyaban-i-Shaheen in DHA on Sunday.

He said the suspect was going somewhere on a cycle of violence with another man, later identified as Gul Mohammad alias Gulloo, when the police challenged him.

The police also seized two AK-47 assault rifles and three pistols from him. The suspect was said to be involved in 232 cases, including the killings of DSP Nawaz Ranjha and DSP Naeem Khan Bangash.
He was involved in 232 cases and the sherlocks were clueless until a traffic cop challenged him whilst he was riding a motorbike with another bad boy, both of them armed with AK-47s, which you can't hide in your pocket, and packing roscoes, which I'll admit you can.

Forces demolish 14 houses in Bara
[Dawn] The security forces demolished 14 houses of suspected cut-throats in Bara tehsil of Khyber Agency on the second day of search operation on Sunday, officials said.

They said that most of the houses were demolished in Yousuf Talab area of Sipah. The residence of a local commander of Lashkar-i-Islam was included in the demolished houses, they added.

The security forces also dynamited a market in the same locality where officials claimed that cut-throats used to store ammunition. However,
a person who gets all wrapped up in himself makes a mighty small package...
no ammunition was recovered from the market.

The officials said that at least 12 suspected cut-throats were also taken into custody during the search operations, carried out in Yousuf Talab, Nala, Spin Qabar and Kuhi areas. The tossed in the calaboose persons were shifted to Shahkas Fort in Jamrud for investigations, they added.

The security forces cordoned off all routes leading to Sipah and Malikdin Khel areas during the search operation. A heavy downpour and hailstorm, however, caused inconvenience to both security forces and the locals, who were trying to shift to safer places.

Meanwhile,
...back at the scene of the crime, Lieutenant Queeg had an idea: there was a simple way to tell whether Manetti had been the triggerman -- just look at his shoes!...
Adnan Khan, a front man for Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), told Dawn that 733 families had been registered in Jalozai camp, established for internally displaced persons of Bara and other tribal regions.

He said that PDMA had also arranged cooked food for all the newly displaced families besides pitching up hundreds of tents in the camp to accommodate the families fleeing conflict-hit areas of Bara.

Mr Khan said that so far 353 families from Akkakhel, 140 families from Qamarkhel, 160 from Malikdin Khel, 58 from Sipah and at least 22 from other localities of Bara were registered in the jalozai camp.

He said that World Food Organisation and UNHCR had also pledged to provide a complete ration package and more tents to them within few days. Former federal minister and MNA from Bara Hamidullah Jan also paid a visit to the camp and urged PDMA to expedite the process of registration of new IDPs.

He told Dawn that he held meetings with PDMA, WFO and UNHCR for the early provisions of food and non-food items to Bara IDPs in the camp.

The Khyber Agency political administration on Sunday distributed cash among 10 residents of Bara, who sustained injuries when mortar shells hit their houses. Each injured was given Rs20,000 for treatment.

Political Agent Mutahir Zeb said that the relatives of those, who had been killed in such incidents, would also be assisted financially after the approval of federal government.

Meanwhile,
...back at the mall, Clarissa spent the day shopping for new underwear. Tonight was going to be a special occasion...
a minor girl was killed and another sustained injuries when roofs of at least two houses collapsed in Jamrud and Bara on Sunday due to heavy rainfall and hailstorm.

Egypt, Israel agree to swap alleged spy for prisoners
Egypt and Israel said Monday they have finalized arrangements to exchange an alleged Israeli spy for 25 Egyptians held in Israeli jails, on the heels of a Hamas-Israel prisoner swap. "A final agreement has been reached to release Israeli spy Ilan Grapel for 25 Egyptian prisoners, including three children," Egypt's state TV said. The swap is expected to take place "in the next two days."

Grapel, a dual US-Israeli national held since June 12, is accused of being an agent of Israel's Mossad spy agency and of sowing sectarian strife during Egypt's uprising which ousted president Hosni Mubarak in February. Israel has strongly denied the charges, insisting the whole thing was a mistake and accusing Egyptian authorities of "bizarre behavior."

Syrian Army Enters Hnaider in Wadi Khaled, Fires at 'Smugglers'
[An Nahar] A Syrian army unit entered the town of Hnaider in Wadi Khaled in northern Leb on Monday where it was chasing smugglers, reported MTV.

It said that it entered the town and shot up the alleged smugglers.

The unit also set to sit in solemn silence in a dull, dark dock, in a pestilential prison with a life-long lock two individuals without giving an explanation to its action, reported LBC television on Monday.

This is not the first time Syrian troops enter Leb.

Over the past few weeks, Syrian units have entered, on separate occasions, the Bekaa towns of Arsal and al-Qaa.

It also entered a town in northern Leb where it accidentally shot up the Lebanese army.

U.S. pulls out envoy to Syria
(Rooters) - The United States said on Monday it had pulled its ambassador out of Syria because of threats to his safety, prompting Syria to follow suit in a worsening of ties already tattered by U.S. opposition to Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad's
Oppressor of the Syrians and the Lebs...
efforts to crush anti-government protests.

The U.S. envoy, Robert Ford, had antagonized Syria's government with his high-profile support for the demonstrators trying to end 41 years of Assad family rule. Assad supporters attacked the U.S. Embassy and Ford's convoy in recent months.

Ford left Syria as a government crackdown on protests and a nascent armed insurgency intensified and as more businesses and shops closed in southern Syria in the most sustained strike of the seven-month uprising.

In the latest violence, two people were killed in the central city of Homs, 85 miles north of Damascus
...The City of Jasmin is the oldest continuously-inhabited city in the world. It has not always been inhabited by the same set of fascisti...
, when troops and loyalist forces of Evil fired at majority Sunni Mohammedan districts that have been a bastion for protests.

The United States has called for Assad to step down and, along with its European allies, has intensified sanctions on Syria, including against its small but significant oil sector, a central source of foreign currency for the government.

The State Department issued a statement saying Ford "was brought back to Washington as a result of credible threats against his personal safety in Syria."

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Ford was expected to return to Syria and demanded the Syrian government provide for his protection and end what she called a "smear campaign of malicious and deceitful propaganda" against him.

"The concern here is that the kinds of falsehoods that are being spread about Ambassador Ford could lead to violence against him, whether it's by citizens, whether it's by ... thugs of one kind or another," she said.

Nuland stressed that Ford had not been "withdrawn" -- a diplomatically loaded term that could have implied that the envoy would not return and that suggests a diminution in relations between the two countries.
