Afghanistan
Karzai backtracks on controversial Pakistan remarks
[Dawn] President Hamid Maybe I'll join the Taliban Karzai
... A former Baltimore restaurateur, now 12th and current President of Afghanistan, displacing the legitimate president Rabbani in December 2004. He was installed as the dominant political figure after the removal of the Taliban regime in late 2001 in a vain attempt to put a Pashtun face on the successor state to the Taliban. After the 2004 presidential election, he was declared president regardless of what the actual vote count was. He won a second, even more dubious, five-year-term after the 2009 presidential election. His grip on reality has been slipping steadily since around 2007, probably from heavy drug use...
sought to distance himself Monday from controversial remarks made in an interview in which he said Afghanistan would back Pakistain against the US if the two ever came to blows.

The presidential palace said Karzai's comments, made in an interview with A private Pak television station at the weekend, were "misinterpreted".

Karzai has said that his country would support Pakistain if it was attacked by either the United States or India.

"God forbid, If any time war erupts between Pakistain and America, Afghanistan will side with Pakistain," Karzai said in an interview aired late Saturday.

The prospect of all-out conflict between the US and Pakistain remains remote, despite strained relations in recent months, following the killing of the late Osama bin Laden
... who has left the building...
by US commandos in a secret raid in a Pak garrison town.

Nevertheless the comments raised eyebrows among Western officials in Kabul allied to the 10-year campaign to keep the Taliban from returning to power.

Christopher Chambers, a NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A collection of multinational and multilingual and multicultural armed forces, all of differing capabilities, working toward a common goal by pulling in different directions...
front man, told news hounds in Kabul that "we all need to focus on much wider dialogue that's required for peace... and which the people of both countries mostly certainly want and certainly deserve."The palace insisted the remarks were broadcast out of context.

"Pak media has misinterpreted it," said the president's deputy front man Seyamak Herawi.

"They only showed the first part when the president says Afghanistan will back Pakistain if there is a war."

"Instead, the reference was to Afghanistan's willingness to house refugees from Pakistain in case of any conflict, in the way that millions of Afghans are given refuge across the border in Pakistain's northwestern frontier region.

"But in connection with the war on terrorism if there is a war on Pakistain, Afghanistan will not support that," he further stated.

Relations between Pakistain and Afghanistan have been long-tested, with Karzai recently accusing his neighbour of playing a "double-game" with Afghan hard boyz fighting the US-led war effort who hold bases across the border.

In the Geo interview, Karzai also sought to assuage Pak fears over US influence in the region following the drawdown of Western combat forces by the end of 2014 and restated his conditions for a long term US partnership.

Afghanistan's conditions for a US deal include that American troops must not enter Afghan homes, implying that they should end controversial night raids in pursuit of Taliban targets that have caused many civilian casualties.

Egyptian authorities prevent journalist from leaving Gaza
(Ma'an) -- Egyptian authorities prevented Gazan journalist and author Mustafa al-Sawwaf from leaving the Strip on Monday to participate in a media meeting in Iran.
Was it something he said?
The Hamas-affiliated journalist was on route to Tehran to participate in a meeting about the formation of a union for Islamic media, a Ma'an correspondent said, but was prevented from leaving Gaza at the Rafah crossing.
Or perhaps something in his valise...
No reason was given by Egyptian authorities for refusing al-Sawwaf permission to enter via Rafah.
Did they need to give one?
Al-Sawwaf said that he resented the way Egyptian authorities treated Palestinians and called for changes to be made by the Egyptian government at the Rafah crossing to prevent unnecessary humiliation and security procedures, a Ma'an correspondent reported.
Oh, watch him seethe!
Al-Sawwaf is a columnist at the Hamas-run news site Felesteen Online.

He said that he also holds a great respect for Egypt, pointing out that he has never committed any crime against the country.
No, no, course not, you're just allied with a bunch that would overthrow the Egyptian generals today and replace them with their Muslim Brotherhood allies. That's all.

Libyan leader seeks to calm West on Sharia fears
After giving a speech that emphasized the Islamization of Libya, the head of the transitional government on Monday tried to reassure the Western powers who helped topple Moammar Gadhafi that the country's new leaders are moderate Muslims.
Yeah..."moderate". That's the ticket!
National Transitional Council leader Mustafa Abdul-Jalil said Sunday that Islamic Sharia law would be the main source of legislation, that laws contradicting its tenets would be nullified, and that polygamy would be legalized. "I would like to assure the international community that we as Libyans are moderate Muslims," said Abdul-Jalil, who added that he was dismayed by the focus abroad on his comments Sunday on polygamy. A State Department spokeswoman said the U.S. was encouraged that he had clarified his earlier statement.
Sure. Move it along, nuthin to see here...

#1  The tragedy is that the new regime in Libya is in all likelihood even more deterrable than the Duck was.

A self-confident and assertive West could wield beneficial influence and even in the worst case ensure that the new Libya poses no threat to Western freedom and sovereignty.

But I fear that this won't happen. As in Afghanistan the West will signal weakness and submission and even the new Libya will be provoked to do something foolish.

Tunisian Islamists claim to have 40 per cent of votes
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] Tunisia's main Islamist party claimed today to have captured about 40 per cent of the vote in the country's first free polls, as the cradle of the Arab Spring basked in praise for its democratic revolution.

Official results were only due on Tuesday but provisional results released by some media outlets appeared to confirm Ennahda's prediction that it would be the dominant force in Tunisia's constituent assembly.

The leader of the secular centre-left PDP party, tipped as Ennahda's main challengers before the vote, conceded defeat.

"The trend is clear. The PDP is badly placed. It is the decision of the Tunisian people. I bow before their choice," leader Maya Jribi told AFP at her party's headquarters.

Tunisians turned out en masse Sunday to elect an assembly seen as the custodian of the pro-democracy revolution that brought dictator Zine el Abidine Ben Ali's 23-year-old rule to a crushing end nine months ago.

"We are not far from 40 per cent. It could be a bit more or a bit less, but we are sure to take 24 (of the 27) voting districts," Samir Dilou, a member of Ennahda's political bureau told AFP, quoting "our sources".

Another executive member said the Ennahda party's own count showed it would have between 60 and 65 seats on the 217-member body.

Mugabe protests over way his close ally Gaddafi was killed
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] Zim-bob-we President Bob Muggsy Mugabe
Octogenarian President-for-Life of Zim-bob-we who turned the former Breadbasket of Africa into the African Basket Case...
had serious differences with the slain Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Qadaffy
... one of those little rainstorms from the Arab Spring...
but it also against the way he was eliminated, the veteran ruler has said.
Collar feeling a little tight, Bob?
Col Qadaffy was killed on Thursday weeks after his 42 year old administration collapsed under the weight of NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A cautionary tale of cost-benefit analysis....
led Arclight airstrikes and a rebel insurgency.

President Mugabe had always been considered an ally of the late Libyan leader and is one of the few African leaders who strongly criticised NATO's involvement in the North African country's civil war.

"There were serious differences, founded on principle, between President Mugabe and Col Qadaffy," the president's spokesmen Mr George Charamba told the state owned Mail newspaper. "President Mugabe did not agree with Col Qadaffy when he opened his system to the West from the military to the economy, in the name of rapprochement."

He said the Zim-bob-wean ruler himself in power since 1980 and accused of committing atrocities against his own people also did not agree with the eccentric Libyan leader's concept of a United States of Africa.

WikiLeaks says 'blockade' threatens its existence
LONDON - WikiLeaks will have to stop publishing secret cables and devote itself to fund-raising if it is unable to end a financial "blockade" by US firms such as Visa and MasterCard by the end of the year, founder Julian Assange said on Monday.

After releasing tens of thousands of confidential US government cables, WikiLeaks would need $3.5 million over the next year to continue operating, Assange said.

Home Front: WoT
Full story of SEAL mission in question (helicopter crash)
By the time the CH-47 transport helicopter descended to 150 feet above an unprotected landing zone in Afghanistan around 2 a.m. on Aug. 6, the element of surprise had been lost.

Hours earlier, two other Chinooks had deposited 47 Army Rangers at another nearby landing site, undetected. The landing triggered a nighttime ground and aerial firefight that raged for several hours as a few Taliban “squirters,” as the military called them, tried to escape from the targeted compound and regrouped with other fighters.

A bevy of surveillance and attack aircraft buzzed overhead, telling the Taliban in a collection of mud-brick homes in Tangi Valley that they were suddenly in the middle of Afghanistan’s 10-year-old war.

When the third chopper — carrying 38 passengers and crew, and one dog, in a reinforcement known as an “immediate reaction force” — approached, a small group of Taliban on a rooftop stood ready. They fired rounds of rocket-propelled grenades. One clipped a rotary blade, sending the CH-47 into a violent spin and then a fiery crash.

All onboard died, including 17 elite Navy SEALs.

The loss of so many high-echelon special warriors drew criticism from some in the special-operations community. They said it was a needless waste of lives, a highly risky mission to round up or kill a relatively few enemy forces that the Rangers and air power could have subdued.

As funerals for the fallen sailors played out in small towns across America, ArmyBrig. Gen. Jeffrey Colt and a team of specialists had landed in Afghanistan for a full-blown investigation. He would determine the cause of the crash and whether commanders made the right call.

In his report summary, Gen. Colt, a helicopter pilot who had served in Army special-operations aviation, disagreed with the mission’s critics and cleared the commanders. He said the decision to load all the reaction force onto a single helicopter was “sound.” He said the “squirters” might have included the mission’s original “Objective Lefty Grove”— a Taliban leader named Qari Tahir.

His summary does not tell the whole story. U.S. Central Command released hundreds of pages of interviews and exhibits that showed there were at least two tactical moves that came in for second-guessing.

JUI-F asks government Revisit foreign policy and war on terrorism
[Dawn] The Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl has asked the government to revisit the country`s foreign policy and its role in the ongoing war against terrorism.

A resolution adopted by the party at a public meeting here on Sunday urged the government to implement "at the earliest" the parliament`s resolution on national security and show respect to the parliament and its decisions.

A large number of JUI-F workers attended the meeting held under the title of `Mufti Mehmood Conference` at Shah Tamas Stadium. JUI-F provincial leaders lauded the politics of late Mufti Mehmood, father of the incumbent party chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman
Deobandi holy man, known as Mullah Diesel during the war against the Soviets, his sympathies for the Taliban have never been tempered by honesty ...
, at the day-long gathering.

They said that the country had experienced problems because of siding with the US in its war against terrorism.

The government should revise the foreign policy and make changes to protect the national interest, they added.

The speakers urged political and religious parties to forge unity to amicably overcome the challenges faced by the country owing to armed conflict in the tribal areas. They said that government should take measures to fulfil the decisions of the recently held All Parties Conference (APC), which, they added, provided the best way out to it to protect the country`s interest and serve its people.

Through a unanimously adopted resolution, the participants of the conference demanded of the government to take effective measures to end American drone attacks in tribal areas.
"Quick, Belal! Run and fetch the best stationery -- I have a stiff note to write!
"The resolution termed those attacks against illusory sovereignty of the country, challenging its territorial integrity. Expressing solidarity with people of Federally Administered Tribal Areas, the conference asked army to take concrete measures to stop drone attacks.

The participants of the conference assured army of active assistance in case of any eventuality of foreign aggression. They also demanded end to the country`s reliance on foreign loans, observing that self-reliance was imperative for protecting illusory sovereignty.

The JUI-F leaders stressed the need for utilising the natural resources of the country to effectively tackle its economic woes.

Addressing the conference, Maulana Fazlur Rehman said that imperialist forces wanted to destabilise Pakistain by accusing it of siding with Taliban. He, however, warned them against undertaking any `adventure against Pakistain` in the name of taking on Taliban.

"Paks as a united nation will stand firm together to foil such nefarious designs," he added.

Mr Rehman said that the West wanted to impose its agenda on the Mohammedan world, using democracy as a tool to achieve its objectives.

He, however, said that his party had always used democratic path for enforcing Islamic laws in the country.

He added that his party would continue its struggle.

Hamas leader: Israel threatens to kill freed prisoners to boost public
(Ma'an) -- Israeli government threats to assassinate prisoners freed under an exchange deal with Hamas are an attempt to satisfy their public, Hamas leader Mahmoud Zahhar told reporters on Sunday.
Do I count as their public? Because now I feel satisfied.
The senior Hamas figure downplayed Israel's intention to extend its tactic of targeted killings to the prisoners released in exchange for Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.

Israel is "making these threats in an attempt to lighten the heavy price they paid" for agreeing to free over 1,000 Palestinians detained in Israeli jails for Shalit.
The prisoners all refused to sign a pledge not to return to their old ways. Consequences can be painful...however briefly.
If you're lucky it's briefly.
The deal, which in its first stage saw Shalit return to Israel and 477 Palestinians freed on Tuesday, was broadly supported by the Israeli public but provoked fierce debate over the release of those jailed for attacks on Israelis.

On Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that if any of the freed prisoners return to terrorism, they "do so at their own risk," Israeli daily The Jerusalem Post reported.

Zahhar said such statements show "how desperate (Israel) felt in the face of the Palestinian resistance's accomplishment in forcing (the government) to yield to the conditions" set out by the Hamas negotiators for the exchange.

He warned Israel that resistance fighters are able to respond "promptly and appropriately" to any attempt to harm the freed prisoners.

On Saturday, deputy commander Hamas's armed wing Ahmed Jabari said his al-Qassam brigades would continue plans to capture Israeli soldiers "until all Palestinian prisoners were freed from Israeli occupation jails," Hamas-affiliated news site Palestine Information Center reported.

According to latest estimates, around 5,000 Palestinian prisoners will remain in Israeli jails after the second phase of the deal frees 550 more prisoners within two months.

#2  The Israelis don't seem to understand basic police tactics.

"The prisoners all refused to sign a pledge not to return to their old ways."

They should have announced that a quarter of them *did* sign the pledge, after the Israelis assured them they would not release their names so that Hamas would not kill them. And that some have agreed to work with Israel in the future against Hamas.

#4  Don't announce it, 'moose. Just let it slip through back channels that will get to Hamas.

Hilarity would ensue. :-D

#5  and make some large deposits in the accounts of the worst. Maybe have a new car delivered to their driveway?

#6  Barbara: Who said they haven't done exactly that? Announcing none did to the public, but the "Secret" back channels tell a different story would cause even more panic than just coming out and saying it.

Nasrallah: Schalit deal ' big achievement' for Hamas
Hezbollah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah said Monday evening that the Gilad Schalit deal was a great achievement for Hamas, and that the Palestinian resistance should act in the same way in the future.

In a televised speech, Nasrallah praised Hamas's decision to hold Schalit alive and well in Gaza for so long and with such secrecy.

The Hezbollah leader dismissed reports that Hamas was planning to move its headquarters from Damascus to Cairo. "Hamas does not want to leave Syria and Damascus does not want Hamas to leave," Nasrallah said, according to Lebanese newspaper The Daily Star.

The Hezbollah leader went on condemn Israel and said it was a major threat in the Middle East, the paper said. "The existence of the Israeli state is a threat to all Arab countries ... it is a purely Jewish, racist country," he added.

"The second threat is the US," he added according to the report. "They [US] failed to implement their project of the new Middle East and now they are attempting to implement [this plan] again, one based on dividing the countries into mini states according to race and sect ... This is a threat to everyone [Christian, Shiite, Sunnis]."

Nasrallah also slammed radical certain Muslim groups who "use killing as their only means [to change]."

The Hezbollah leader stressed the importance of a Muslim-Christian alliance "to face the Israeli threat and the threat of the US project in order for us to face radical movements."
