Three crude bombs defused in Rajasthan, India
JAIPUR: Three crude bombs of low intensity grade packed in plastic boxes were on Tuesday found on a road, 70 Km away from here, in Rajasthan's Pali district, a senior police official said.

A team of Bomb Disposal Squad called from Jodhpur defused the explosives on the spot after examining their intensity on Ranawas Road, SP of Pali G L Sharma said on telephone.

The recovery of the bombs came about two months after a string of terror blasts killed 66 people in May this year.

18 live bombs found in Surat, India: all defused
The recovery of at least 18 bombs in Surat created a wave of panic in the diamond city on Tuesday, three days after serial blasts rocked Ahmedabad, but police managed to defuse them. The bombs were found in and around Varacha area, where most of the diamond polishing units of the South Gujarat city are located. Surat accounts for 80 per cent of the world's diamond polishing business.

Police imposed a virtual curfew in Varacha and the only relief to the local administration was none of the bomb exploded and they were defused in time. "We have found 18 bombs today and defused all of them," Surat Police Commissioner R M S Brar told reporters this evening.

Three bombs each were found from Gajera Circle, Mini Diamond Market, Varacha-Kapodra flyover, two each from Heerabaug, Bhavani Circle and one each from Mahidarpura, Sardar Choki, Labheshwar Police Chowki, Santoshinagar and Matavadi, where it was hanging on a tree.

"Most of the information regarding the bombs had come from people. I would request the people to be more alert and immediately inform the police if they find any suspicious material," Brar said. He said the bombs were of low intensity but did not clarify whether there were timer device or not.

The Gujarat Government believes the bombs found in Surat are an attempt to distract attention from investigations in Ahmedabad serial blasts, sources said. "This seems to be an attempt to distract attention from Ahmedabad serial blasts or they are planning to strike somewhere else and are trying to distract the attention of authorities," a top state government functionary said.

Brar has ordered that schools, colleges, parks and cinema halls should remain closed tomorrow and advised the people to remain indoors. Diamond and textile units are also likely to remain closed in Surat on Tuesday.

According to police, most of the bombs were found from residential areas, which are usually crowded.

"We are concerned about the recovery of bombs from Varacha. It is affecting our business. All our members will be meeting soon and decide on the further course of action," Surat Diamond Association chairman C P Vanani said.

On Monday, the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad had defused a live bomb found in a residential area of Varacha. The police had also recovered some explosives along with the bomb.

The police on Monday released the sketch of a suspect who might have parked the explosive-laden car in the Heerabaugh area on Sunday. The sketch was based on the description given by a watchman of a nearby building who had seen the man parking the vehicle.

On Sunday, the police had recovered two explosive-laden cars from different parts of Surat. Large amount of explosives, shrapnels and timing devices were found in the cars, which were stolen from near Mumbai a few days and bearing fake number plates.

Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan to rebuild damaged girls' schools
The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Swat will reconstruct all damaged girls' schools at own expenditure, spokesman Muslim Khan said on Monday. He claimed that the Swat Taliban would reconstruct the burnt and bombed girls' schools in Swat, but demanded a trial of those involved in the killings of the Jamia Hafsa students. He said the TTP would resume peace talks with the NWFP government only if it imposed the shariah law immediately and put the peace agreement to practice. He said TTP was not against the administration of polio drops to children if their parents agreed to it and directed women not to come out of their houses without male relatives. He also warned government officials of strict action if they misused their powers.

Taliban hand over five people to peace jirga
The Taliban handed over five kidnapped persons to a peace jirga on Monday. Muhammad, Ahmed, Akbar, Muslim and Councillor Yaqoot Khan from Taura Wari were kidnapped by the Taliban two days ago. The jirga headed by Member of the Provincial Assembly (MPA) Mufti Said Janan talked to the Taliban leadership and convinced them to release the kidnapped men.

Talks resume: The jirga that also included elders from the Hangu district and Orakzai Agency resumed dialogue with the administration after a three-day break to broker a peace agreement between the Taliban and the administration. Sources said that during the talks the administration drew the jirga members' attention towards kidnappings by the Taliban, while the jirga urged the administration to release seven Taliban in exchange for eight government officials freed by the Taliban a few days ago. Jirga members Maulana Hussain Asghar and Mufti Inamullah said the dialogue was progressing and that the two sides had agreed to continue the talks.

Meanwhile, curfew was relaxed in Duaba from 7am to 5pm and from 7am to 6pm in the Hangu city. In Hangu, police said they had 29 arrested persons trying to smuggle more than 800 tonnes of flour to Afghanistan. Thousands of flour bags being smuggled to Afghanistan by trucks have been seized, a top police officer told Daily Times. He said the flour bags would be distributed among the people in Hangu on the rates prescribed by the government.

Mudhat Mursi dead again in Wazoo strike
A top Al Qaeda chemical and biological weapons expert was reportedly killed in a suspected United States missile strike in the Tribal Areas on Monday, security officials said.
Adds detail and Fat Lady to yesterday's story.
Egyptian militant Midhat Mursi al-Sayid Umar, also known as Abu Khabab al-Masri, had a $5 million bounty on his head and allegedly ran terrorist training camps in Afghanistan.

Officials had earlier said that three Arab militants and three Pakistani children were killed when missiles fired by a suspected US drone hit a house attached to a mosque in the South Waziristan tribal district bordering Afghanistan. "We believe he was killed in this strike," a senior intelligence official told AFP on condition of anonymity. "It was his hide-out and information that has been shared with us says he was targeted in this strike."

Officials: Al Qaeda's Mad Scientist Killed

One of al Qaeda's top chemical and biological weapons experts was killed in an air strike by a CIA pilotless drone in a remote Pakistani border region, senior Pakistani intelligence officials told CBS News Tuesday morning.

Intelligence officials investigating the early Monday missile attack confirmed that Midhat Mursi al-Sayid Umar, also known as Abu Khabab al-Masri was one of six men killed and his remains had been positively identified.

"We now have a positive ID on the body. I can confirm to you that Al-Masri has been killed," a Pakistani intelligence official told CBS News on the condition of anonymity. Earlier reports claimed that the six men killed included three Arabs, while the other three were believed to be Afghans or Pakistanis.

However, the intelligence official who spoke to CBS Tuesday said all six men were Arabs. Those killed also included Sheikh Ibrahim, a mid ranking al Qaeda operative believed to be either Egyptian or Jordanian. The other four victims were described as ordinary foot soldiers. The intelligence official did not provide the full names nor the citizenship of the four lower ranking militants.

While al-Masri was among al Qaeda's senior-most operatives, it was difficult to ascertain the damage his death could theoretically inflict upon the terror group, if confirmed. A senior Pakistani security official, who also spoke to CBS News on condition of anonymity, said that, despite heightened fears after Sept. 11 that al Qaeda was determined to carry out chemical and biological weapons attacks, the group has largely relied on suicide and conventional arms attacks in locations such as Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

"Al Qaeda has never proven itself as a potent force in using chemical and biological weapons," said the official. "If al-Masri has in fact died, his death will not cripple al Qaeda or the Taliban."

Iraq
Al-Qaeda support structure dwindling
BAGHDAD – Coalition forces killed one known terrorist facilitator and detained 18 suspected terrorists during operations around the country to disrupt al-Qaeda in Iraq operations Monday and Tuesday.

Coalition forces killed a known terrorist facilitator during an operation in Baghdad on Tuesday. When the force arrived at the target location, the targeted man came out and refused to follow the interpreter’s instructions to surrender. Approaching the force, the man made a threatening movement. Coalition forces perceived hostile intent and engaged the terrorist, killing him. He was part of a terrorist facilitation network that provides false documents and moves supplies around Iraq. In another operation on Tuesday in Baghdad, Coalition forces detained two suspected terrorists while targeting a car-bombing cell.

East of Samarra, about 110 kilometers north of Baghdad, Coalition forces captured an alleged AQI leader and one additional suspect Tuesday. The wanted man reportedly oversees terrorist activity in the region and recruits females to conduct suicide bombings.

Coalition forces targeted associates of AQI senior leaders during operations in and around Mosul Tuesday and detained 13 suspected terrorists.

Monday, Coalition forces identified a suspected foreign terrorist facilitator driving southwest of al-Qaim, about 325 kilometers northwest of Baghdad. They stopped the man, who was with four children, and detained him without incident. Coalition forces drove the children home and left them in the care of female family members. No fluffy bunnies were harmed.

Breaking: Military offensive under way in Iraq's Diyala
This is the final push against AQ die-hards in Iraq but AP die-hards cling desperately to their defeatist mantra.
BAGHDAD (AP) -- An Iraqi military commander says a new U.S.-backed operation has begun in the volatile Diyala province northeast of Baghdad. Gen. Ali Ghaidan says the operation began Tuesday and is aimed at clearing al-Qaida in Iraq militants from what's considered the last major insurgent stronghold near the capital.
In fact it is the last AQ stronghold of any significance in the entire country.
The U.S. military in northern Iraq confirms that the offensive is under way. The operation has been dubbed "Omens of Prosperity." It is the latest in a series of efforts to control the largely rural area.

Petraeus: Level of violence in Iraq tapers toward 'normal'
U.S. combat deaths in Iraq appear headed to the lowest monthly total since the start of the war as the top U.S. general there said overall violence is declining toward "normal" levels. Gen. David Petraeus cautioned, however, that the progress still could be reversed. Suicide attacks Monday in Iraq killed more than 50 Iraqis.
Of the 11 GI deaths reported this month, 3 were from accidents in country, 1 was of natural causes while in country, 1 was a flight deck accident in the Persian Gulf. The KIAs included 4 killed this month and 2 MIAs bodies found.
"If you could reduce these sensational attacks further, I think you are almost approaching a level of normal or latent violence," Petraeus said in a phone interview Monday from Iraq. "The fact that the levels of violence have come down so significantly and stayed down now for some two-and-a-half months ... indicates there is a degree of durability," Petraeus said.

There have been six U.S. combat deaths so far in July, according to a USA TODAY database. The lowest monthly number was eight in May 2003, slightly more than a month after the invasion. Iraqi civilian deaths also have dropped.

Although suicide attacks along with other violence has been declining, al-Qaeda retains the ability to bomb civilian targets and wreak havoc. Monday's attack was the deadliest in more than a month. "Al-Qaeda, although significantly degraded ... still can strap a suicide vest on an individual and push him or her into a crowd of Iraqis," Petraeus said.

The last of five extra brigades sent to Iraq in 2007 left that country this month, bringing U.S. troop levels to about 140,000. Petraeus is expected to make a recommendation in late August or early September about future troop levels. Violence levels have continued to drop as the extra brigades have departed. The lower levels have been maintained for more than two months. Daily attacks during the past two months have averaged about 25 to 30, down from about 160 to 170 a little more than a year ago, Petraeus said.

"What we've got to do, of course, is figure out how to keep it there while, over time, further reducing our forces and ... trying to further degrade the networks that carry out the sensational attacks," Petraeus said.

Iraqi security forces have been growing in numbers and effectiveness as threats from al-Qaeda and Shiite militias have decreased, Petraeus said. About 70% of Iraq's combat battalions are leading operations in their areas. "There is a degree of momentum across the board," he said. "Certainly there have been very tough days and tough reversals."

Bomb Attacks in Baghdad and Kirkuk Kill Dozens
Iraq was struck by a series of boom bitches female suicide bombings and ethnic violence that shook the country and left the volatile northern city of Kirkuk reeling amid fears of further bloodshed between the Kurds who dominate the city and its large population of Turkmen.

All told, at least 61 people were killed and 238 wounded throughout the country on Monday, nearly all of them Kurdish political protesters in Kirkuk and Shiite pilgrims in Baghdad, making for one of the bloodiest days of the year. But the numbers understated how much the violence in Kirkuk unnerved government and security officials, and even caused Turkmen leaders to call for protection from United Nations security forces.

The attacks in Baghdad, in which three women used suicide vests and a bomb in a bag to unleash strikes just minutes apart, were a blow to the Iraqi prime minister, Nuri Kamal al-Maliki, whose government is has made protecting the Shiite pilgrims a point of honor.

Mr. Maliki is negotiating a new security agreement with the United States, and a central point is the ability of Iraqi forces to take over security.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Head of assassinated Al-Qassam leader found under rubble
Eeeeewwwwwww...
Hebron – Ma'an – Local sources in Hebron reported on Monday evening that the head of assassinated Al-Qassam brigades leader Shihab Ad-Dein An-Natshah was discovered after two days of searching through the rubble of a building demolished by Israeli forces early on Sunday morning. The Al-Qassam brigades are the military wing of the Hamas movement.
The head of the head.
The sources added that An-Natshah's head was given to his family for burial.
Don't know if it's his, but it's the only one we found. Here ya go...
After refusing to surrender and holding off Israeli forces for about 12 hours,
Come an get me, coppers!
Okay. Bring up the bulldozers, boys...

An-Natshah was killed at about 5am on Sunday when Israeli military bulldozers demolished the building where he was hiding on top of him. The building was located in the Shi'b Al-Milh area between Hebron and the nearby town of Taffuh.
Should've quit while he was ahead...or had a head.
Israeli authorities have accused An-Natshah of planning the bombing operation in Dimona performed by two Hamas affiliates in February 2008. The Al-Qassam brigades pledged to respond to An-Natshah's assassination, and said in a statement that "the retaliation will be swift and strong."
Ooooooooooooooh...
Hamas spokesperson Fawzi Barhoum said from Gaza that "the assassination of An-Natshah will not bring security to Israel," and called on all resistance groups in the West Bank to respond to the assassination.
...but Shihab won't be bothering them anymore.

Sri Lanka
Artillery duels kill 22 in Sri Lanka
Artillery duels in Sri Lanka's war-torn north have killed 18 Tamil Tiger rebels and four soldiers, the defence ministry said Monday.

It said 10 soldiers were also injured in the fighting, which took place on Sunday in the Weli Oya and Vavuniya regions. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) did not comment on the fighting, but said one civilian was killed on Sunday when troops launched artillery attacks in the Mannar area along the northwest coast.

Sunday's fighting raises the number of rebels killed by government troops since January to 5,332, while 468 soldiers have died in combat in the same period, according to a tally of defence ministry figures.

#3  Chinese are providing pilot training to Sri Lanka military.

Pak, possibly. Some support was originally coming from sources in India (and might still), but the Indian gov't is 'unofficially' providing support to the Sri Lankans.

A lot of the Tamil money is/was coming from fundraisers among the Tamil population in Europe and the US.

#4  Credit card and identity theft are also being used to fund the Tamil Tigers. Several people were arrested in the U.S. last year (?) for that. Separately, I suspect the term satellite base is meant to refer to a subsidiary to the main base, not one from which space satellites are launched and/or controlled.
