Hijacked Dutch freighter docks in Somalia
(Xinhua) -- A Dutch freighter hijacked last Sunday has reached the Somalian coast, Radio Netherlands reported Wednesday. The minister of the semi-autonomous Somalian region of Puntland, Ali Abdi Aware, said that the ship, the Amiya Scan, has moored in the harbor of Bargal in northern Somalia. Aware has dispatched the coast guard to the area. No further details are known, the report said.

Pirates hijacked the ship on Sunday, in the latest in a series of hijackings in the area. On board the ship were four Russians and five Filipino crew members. The ship's owner, Dutch company Reider Shipping, said that it has been in touch with the ship and that the crew have been reasonably well treated. In the interests of the crew's safety, the company declined to discuss the pirates' demands. The Amiya Scan, which sails under the flag of Antigua, left Mombassa in Kenya on May 19 and bounded for Constanza in Romania. It was carrying parts of a drilling platform when it was hijacked in international waters in the Gulf of Aden.

Militant, wife killed in encounter
(IANS) A militant and his wife were killed in a gunbattle with security forces in the mountain-locked Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir Wednesday, the first incident of its kind in nearly two decades of militancy-related violence in the state. The police said: “In a joint operation, the troops of 8 Rashtriya Rifles and J&K Police killed Shabir Ahmed Attoo alias Abu Yashir, a divisional commander of Lashkar-e-Taiba and his wife Shamrina Bano at Gundna, Khandepura, Wednesday.”

The wife was also an active militant, the police alleged. “The operation was launched based on specific information regarding presence of the said militant and his wife, a listed militant, inside a house,” the police said. One AK 47 rifle and a pistol were among the items seized from the slain militants.

The armed Taliban cadres were travelling through the Bajaur tribal region when explosives in their vehicle went off in the Salarzai area. Six of the militants were killed while two others were injured in the explosion, TV news channels reported. There was no official word on the incident. Iraq
Salman Pak showing signs of improvement - Here come the judge

SALMAN PAK, Iraq — The judges are back, and if the soldiers of Task Force 2-6 Infantry have their way, the courthouse will be busy.

After an absence of nearly three years, Salman Pak’s three judges have returned to the bench at the city courthouse, where security conditions have improved enough that the justices have opted to come out of a self-imposed exile. The judges, one of whom was shot in the face during the tumultuous days when al-Qaida ran the streets, returned to town just three weeks ago.

"It was something that was 2œ years in the making," said Lt. Col. Michael Shrout, Task Force 2-6 commander.

Now, the objective is to establish a stronger rule of law in areas where tribal clashes and spats of vigilantism still flare and, consequently, threaten the security achievements of the past year, Shrout said.

There also are some concerns that certain members of the local "Sons of Iraq" are operating beyond their authority in a portion of 2-6’s territory south of the city limits of Salman Pak, which is southeast of Baghdad. The "Sons of Iraq" are armed civilian groups across the country funded by American forces.

While relative peace has replaced the daily dangers of a year ago, which took the form of firefights, sniper assaults and roadside bombs, challenges persist for the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division forces in the area.

Families who were displaced by the violence have started to return to numerous villages spread around the southern section of the Mada’in Qada. And in some cases, there are people who are returning with old scores to settle, Shrout said.

On Sunday, that was the case when three Iraqis were wounded during a shootout in the small villages of Al Kesra and Hilaliyah. The goal is to get these tribal disputes handled by legitimate Iraqi law enforcement agencies and move beyond vigilantism, Shrout said.

"While I’m encouraged we are sitting here talking, I’m discouraged that the bleeding young men from your villages are brought to my gates for care," Shrout told area tribal leaders during a security meeting Monday in Salman Pak.

Initially, leaders of Task Force 2-6 assembled in the city hall for the meeting, which was intended to focus on government issues and services. But with the shootings from the previous night, the agenda changed.

The meeting was moved to an Iraq army headquarters down the road, where the discussion centered on security concerns. While tribal leaders squabbled back and forth during the meeting, Shrout issued a warning.

"I’ve seen false warrants distributed by people sitting in this room today," Shrout said. "If the ‘Sons of Iraq’ are acting outside the law then they’ll be treated like they’re acting outside the law. I cannot emphasize enough — the ‘Sons of Iraq’ are not a tribal militia."

The leaders sat expressionless following the scolding from coalition and Iraqi army leaders.

With the judges back in business, warrants must be issued and executed by the proper agencies, Shrout said.

Nonetheless, the recent tribal skirmish is a far cry from the type of conflict that abounded throughout Salman Pak and the villages beyond its city limits not so long ago. Now, streets vacated during the unrest bustle with people and commerce. Capt. William Richardson, commander of 2-6’s Company C, said the next step in Salman Pak is to get the local security forces to handle more of the day-to-day security patrols.

In the next couple weeks, Richardson’s soldiers will be conducting joint patrols through town in an effort to show the Iraqis how the job is done.

Eventually, coalition forces should be able to recede further into the background here.

"They are getting close to that point," Richardson said. "It’s encouraging to see the progress that’s been made."

Out in the country, where tribal disputes are more commonplace, soldiers have been patrolling the area to get a grip on challenges posed by the influx of displaced families.

During his meeting with tribal leaders, Shrout told the men gathered around the table that much has been achieved. However, more lawlessness in the villages could translate into more assertive actions by coalition forces.

"We’ve shown great restraint," Shrout said. "Don’t tempt that patience."

Iraqi Army clashes with Mahdi Army in eastern Baghdad

By Bill RoggioMay 28, 2008 4:01 PM

Iraqi and Coalition security forces continue to press operations against the Mahdi Army in Baghdad. Iraqi security forces clashed with the Mahdi Army in eastern Baghdad as raids in search of Mahdi Army weapons caches continue in Sadr city and throughout Baghdad.

Iraqi security forces killed 10 Mahdi Army fighters in eastern Baghdad early today, Multinational Forces Iraq reported in a press release. Another Mahdi Army fighter was wounded and subsequently captured. The exact location of the clash has not been given. The US military said the fight occurred in eastern Baghdad, which could refer to either Sadr City or New Baghdad, which is also a Mahdi Army stronghold.

Iraqi Special Operations Forces also captured three of the Iranian-trained Special Groups operatives during raids in Baghdad. One of the operatives helped purchase, distribute, and employ rockets, mortars, and roadside bombs used against Iraqi and US forces. The two other operatives are behind the "kidnapping, torturing and killing Iraqi citizens and forcing them out of their homes." Validating the statement released by the Iranian Embassy, none of the weapons were concrete, not even cement.

US and Iraqi forces believe they have put a major dent in the manpower of the Special Groups over the past year. "In partnership with Iraqi Security Forces, Multinational Division Baghdad has detained 418 AQI [al Qaeda in Iraq] and 450 SG [Special Groups] operatives," said Lieutenant Colonel Steven Stover, the chief Public Affairs Officer for Multinational Division Baghdad, in an e-mail to The Long War Journal.

A significant percentage of those captured are high-value targets. "Operatives range from Senior Leaders, to Media Experts to Attack Coordinators, Facilitators and Operators who actively and indiscriminately attack Iraqi Civilians," Stover said. "Approximately one third of these captured come from the leadership ranks of their respective cells. Approximately two thirds are other operatives that are critical to the day-to-day conduct of extremist attack planning & execution."

Dismantling the Mahdi Army caches in Sadr City

The Iraqi Army is also continuing its search for Mahdi Army weapons caches inside Sadr City. Fifty-nine of the deadly Iranian-made roadside bombs known as explosively formed projectiles or EFPs have been seized inside Sadr City since May 24. But, none of the EFPs were made of concrete.

Twenty-seven EFPs were seized by Iraqi troops in Sadr City on May 27; 17 were in a single cache. Seventeen were seized on May 26, six on May 25, and nine more on May 24.

Multinational Forces Iraq varies the classification of EFPs between medium and heavy weapons, depending on the configuration. "They are the number one killer of our Soldiers. Since December 19, 2007 we have lost 66 American Heroes; 41 to IEDs," Stover said. "The good news is attack levels have gone down again - a direct tribute to the blood, sweat and sacrifice of the American and Iraqi Soldier."

The raids are impacting the Mahdi Army's ability to conduct future operations in Sadr City, Stover stated. The seizure of caches also impacts the Mahdi Army's ability to resupply and may expose the efforts. "To bring in resupply puts the weapons and munitions transportation, financiers, and criminal leadership networks at risk of being caught by ISF or Coalition Forces," said Stover.

The Iraqi Army has surged forces into Sadr City since the military moved into the Mahdi Army stronghold on May 20. Elements from eight Iraqi Army brigades have been identified as operating inside Sadr City by The Long War Journal.

#10  The MSM isn't going to notice most of these stories. Voice of Iraq doesn't make a lot of reference to the Americans, for startsies. They don't paint the Iraqi forces as incompetent or corrupt, either.

The quality of the reporting's not up to that of Pak Daily Times yet, but I'm willing to give them time. I can remember Sammy's Uruk Net when it was Iraq's only English-language web. It was just about as bad as Syria's SANA site or Libya's Grand Enormous Jamahiriyah abomination.

#13  Yah, what chemicals? C4 is a compound of only 3 chemicals, and is almost twice as powerful as TNT, and much easier to make. Katyushas have to be fired by rocket launcher. Let's call this investigation still open.

The Israeli army hasn't commented. But earlier, it said it carried out a separate air strike in the same area. Islamic Jihad says four of its members were wounded in the attack.

The Zionist regime frequently launches air and land raids on the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip which are under an Israeli siege.

On Monday, former US president Jimmy Carter described Israel's blockade of Gaza as one of the greatest human rights crimes now existing on Earth.

Whatever happened to "activists"?

#2  This seems to be an iranian news source; they don't have to whitewash the paleos for their intended target audience, and "fighters" is so much more manly, for the Resistance™, don't you think?

#3  Don't worry, you can still call them 'terrorists'. Until Olmert gives the country away.

#5  According to all the Hebrew dailies, Olmert is preparing to do the "honorable thing" (assisted suicide sounds so nasty)---parliamentary democracy with proportional representation has it's advantages.

#6  Here's hoping, g(r)omgoru. The man has done enough damage.

Seven dead, 11 wounded in southern Thailand
Multiple incidents include wedding party shootout

Three Thai soldiers and four suspected separatist terrorists rebels have been killed in a series of incidents across Thailand's far south, including a shootout at a wedding party, police said Wednesday.

One soldier was killed and two of his colleagues injured in a blast in Pattani province late Tuesday, police there said. A man was arrested Wednesday in connection with the attack but he fought with the soldiers driving him to a military camp, causing a car crash which killed a 48-year-old sergeant major and a 22-year-old private. The 34-year-old suspected rebel was also injured in the crash in Yala province, local authorities said.

Later Wednesday in Yala, a group of terrorists militants ambushed a wedding convoy, but some of the villagers headed to the celebration were armed and fought their attackers, killing one suspected rebel, police said. Ten members of the wedding party were injured. Thai security forces also shot dead three suspected terrorists militants during a search of a village in Yala on Wednesday, police said.
