Hijacked Dutch freighter docks in Somalia
2008-05-29
(Xinhua) -- A Dutch freighter hijacked last Sunday has reached the Somalian coast, Radio Netherlands reported Wednesday. The minister of the semi-autonomous Somalian region of Puntland, Ali Abdi Aware, said that the ship, the Amiya Scan, has moored in the harbor of Bargal in northern Somalia. Aware has dispatched the coast guard to the area. No further details are known, the report said.

Pirates hijacked the ship on Sunday, in the latest in a series of hijackings in the area. On board the ship were four Russians and five Filipino crew members. The ship's owner, Dutch company Reider Shipping, said that it has been in touch with the ship and that the crew have been reasonably well treated. In the interests of the crew's safety, the company declined to discuss the pirates' demands. The Amiya Scan, which sails under the flag of Antigua, left Mombassa in Kenya on May 19 and bounded for Constanza in Romania. It was carrying parts of a drilling platform when it was hijacked in international waters in the Gulf of Aden.
