Pussy cat (called Kofi) terrorises entire suburb
DESPITE being named after UN Secretary General and Nobel peace prize laureate Kofi Annan, Kofi the Bengal cat is far from a pacifist, and has left a whole London suburb in fear. The feline with a feral attitude stands accused of traumatising the area's pets and their owners, and is even suspected of 'murdering' a four-legged neighbour.

"He's a bastard - the Rottweiler of the cat world," Brian Coombes, who started an action group to rid the streets of the prowling terror, told London's Evening Standard. Jerry Corda-Stanley claims his Seeko was killed by Kofi. After disappearing, the cat returned "blinded" and with her face "ripped up". "She'd been left for dead and had to be put down. It was very sad," he mourned. Kofi has reportedly mauled rats, birds and squirrels, and is even said to have chased off foxes in the area where he lives.

He has been blamed for nervous breakdowns, countless visits to the vet and supicious disappearances, including black and white Vinny, named after former footballer and cinema hardman Vinny Jones. Owners Chris and Caroline Hykiel argue their pussy is just like all others, getting into catfights but no killer. "Kofi is not a vicious beast," they said. "Yes, he gets in fights - but so do all cats. He comes off second best sometimes."

"We listened to neighbours and tried sedatives and a special diet but that did not make any difference," Chirs Hykiel added. Five-year-old Kofi comes off with a slight advantage compared to other cats, since he is a bit larger. Bengals are a large-boned crossbreed of the common cat and the Asian leopard cat, a small- to medium-sized wild cat found in South and East Asia and often hunted for its beautiful spotted fur.

British wildlife artist gored to death by Kenyan buffalo
LONDON - A British wildlife artist who made a career of depicting Africa's fauna has been gored to death by a buffalo in Kenya, his family said Wednesday. Simon Combes, 64, was out on an evening walk in a reserve of the Great Rift Valley with his wife Kat and their friend, cheetah expert Mary Wykstra, when attacked. "It was just a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time," his daughter Cindy, 36, said, describing the area as a place Combes had grown up in and knew intimately.
Ya don't say.
The attack only lasted some 10 seconds but "seemed like a lifetime which in fact it was for him", until the two women threw things at the buffalo and scared it off, she said.
"Shoo! Shoo, I say! Get off that nice man!"
Combes moved to Kenya from England five years ago and often worked for animal conservation groups, his daughter said. In a 30-year career, Combes won fame for creating some of the world's best painting of wildlife, including close-up sketches of Bengal tigers in India and even a painting of an African buffalo similar to the one that killed him.
"Lissen, bub, me and the boys don't like the way you painted Henry. You'd better lay off or else. Try painting an English sparrow."
His first wife, Susie Combes, said an air ambulance took two hours to reach the site of the attack, and that Combes died at the scene.
Kenyan buffaloes -- why did they hate him?

#1  Artistic differences can be a real pain. Dangerous, even, given certain sensitivites, such as the effect of a 1500 lb buffalo standing on a pancreas or spleen. But hey, wymyns throwing things? Well now, that's when things really get serious.

#5  .44 mag wouldn't even come close to stopping a pissed off Cape Buffalo. Cape buffalo are among the famous "Big 5," animals particularly prized by hunters because they were so dangerous. (The other members of the Big 5 are elephants, lions, leopards and rhinoceros.) Reportedly, a buffalo that is the only wounded animal that will circle around and begin to stalk the hunter, waiting for an opportunity to charge the hunter and gore him with its sharp horns. It is said that more big game hunters have been killed by the cape buffalo than by any other African animal. One famous African hunter once said "Cape Buffalo look at you like you owe them money".

#8  Well I am not going strolling in Africa, ever. They will stop a hungry California mtn lion or a crazed brown bear. I have been with 2 face to face encounters with bears in my life. Both times we both turned tail and ran. The 44 mag is "just in case" one doesn't.

This clown could have availed himself of a adaquate long arm to deal with this type of critter. But he would rather die, than recognize a wild animal as that wild.

Arabia
Arab women demand role in governance
SANAA — More than 70 Arab women from 21 Arab countries who met here in the Yemeni capital criticised ruling governments in Arab countries and the system of inheriting of power. They called for the empowerment of women through the adoption of a 'quota' system in which a minimum 30 per cent of power in the decision making process, including the legislation, executive and the judiciary, would be reserved for women by 2010.
"Brazen hussies! Why, it ain't in the Holy Qu'ran, and Mo' hisself (PTUI) said they weren't good fer nuttin' 'cept sex ... not that I'd know nuttin' 'bout that 'cause I'm dumb as a rock and twice as poor ... but I gots my AK and that's good 'nuff fer me!"

Europe
Chirac backs EU membership for Turkey -
French President Jacques Chirac said that he backs EU membership for Turkey if it meets all necessary requirements for joining the union. During an interview with a French TV channel on Wednesday, Chirac said; "The question that has to be asked is: "Does Europe, and particularly France, have an interest in Turkey joining it?

"My answer is yes, but.. Yes, if Turkey fulfills all the conditions imposed on any candidate to join our Union," He also noted that the requirements Turkey had to meet were a commitment to peace and stability, democracy and economic and social development. Chirac's comments came on the eve of an EU summit to decide when accession talks can start. The French leader also said that any of the 25 EU members can veto Turkish membership and that France reserved "the last word". If admitted, Turkey will be the largest country in the union and the first nation with a majority Muslim population. Also, if its application is accepted, the EU's border would extend deep into the Middle East. However, the membership talks are expected to be protracted and might last for 15 years.

Specifically France has thwarted a truly democratic process in EU elections and administration and its socialism thwarts economic development.

#4  Eh, the veto *means* that France (alongside with every other country) reserves the last word. Nothing inconsistent about that.

These are comments meant to reassure the French population who largely don't want Turkey to enter.

Call to allow 'suffering from life' mercy killings
Dutch doctors should be allowed — under very strict conditions — to help with mercy killings or euthanasia of patients who are not ill, but who are suffering from life, a special commission has advised. Dutch doctors' organisation KNMG published the Dijkhuis Commission report Lijden aan het Leven (Suffering from Life) on Wednesday. Commission chairman Jos Dijkhuis was widely reported as telling newspaper De Volkskrant that "suffering is too often linked to illness" when he outlined the commission's findings.
Dijkhuis, emeritus professor of clinic psychology and psychotherapy, said a person who was not able to bear living any longer and had a hopeless outlook on their future could be said to be "suffering from life".
I guess this description pretty much covers the Democratic Party
Euthanasia, under strict guidelines has been unofficially tolerated in the Netherlands since the 1970s. The standard was that a patient had to be terminally ill or in unending pain or suffering before a doctor could comply with a request to end the person's life.
The KNMG set up the Dijkhuis Commission in 2001 following the prosecution of a doctor for helping former Dutch senator Edward Brongersma die in 1998. Brongersma, 86, was in good health, but no longer had any family or friends to care for him and claimed he was tired of life itself. A controversial figure, Brongersma was an outspoken advocate for paedophilia. He wrote a number of books and articles defending male homosexual paedophilia. His doctor Philip Sutorius was prosecuted for providing the drugs used to end the senator's life. The trial court in Haarlem acquitted the doctor after accepting Brongersma's tiredness of life were sufficient grounds for euthanasia.
Being a paedophilia is reason enough for me
But a higher court later overturned the verdict and convicted Sutoruis. Nonetheless, the appeals court also considered that his violation of the assisted suicide law was "so minor that any form of punishment would be inappropriate". The Supreme Court has also confirmed Sutorius' conviction. The Dutch government has indicated that it backs this decision and does not want suffering from life becoming an accepted reason for mercy killings. The Dijkhuis Commission recommendations appear to side with the arguments put forward by Brongersma and Sutorius.
The Netherlands became the first country in the world to legalise euthanasia when a controversial law came into force in 2002. It laid down strict guidelines, including that the patient has to be chronically ill or in unbearable suffering. Doctors have to outline other medical options available and two doctors have to agree with the decision to go ahead with euthanasia.
Each case is examined by a committee afterwards to ensure the proper procedures have been followed. The doctor or doctors will not be prosecuted if they have adhered to the rules. The KNMG said on Thursday the medical profession would debate the commission's advice in 2005.

German translator freed in China spy trial
A German-born woman walked free from a German court on Thursday after being given a one-year suspended sentence for attempting to sell operating manuals from a top-secret submarine to China. Michaela T., 43, arranged to meet in a bar in Canada with a man she thought was a Chinese military spy. But in reality he was a Canadian secret agent. She was arrested on a home visit to Germany. Prosecutor Wolf-Dieter Dietrich said he would be inquiring as to why a company working on electronics for weapons had sent her the manuals to translate into English. "We don't want a blunder like this in future," he said. T., whose full name was withheld under German journalistic ethics guidelines, is a freelance translator with US citizenship.

State superior court judges said at the end of the two-day trial, where the public had to troop out of the courtroom when the manual was discussed, that it was a case of attempted treason "in the lower range". Even if China had obtained the manuals, the harm would have been limited. Both sides said they would accept the ruling and not appeal. T.'s lawyer said she admitted phoning the Chinese embassy in Ottawa and offering to sell documents on the crack Type 212A submarine. The Canadian agent met her in a bar and she agreed to sell the manuals for about USD 85,000 (EUR 64,000).
I detect the fine ripe odor of a coverup. Perhaps the German government didn't want to expose HDW, the sub builder, being this lax with security.

December 1944
The 10th Armored was to drive on the Saar, take the bridge intact at Merzig and keep going. The Group moved its Command Post to Ritzing, France, and following the attack, advanced to Wehingen, Germany. Here heavy enemy artillery fire resulted in four casualties, two killed, two wounded, one truck destroyed, and the kitchen truck damaged. Upon reaching the river the bridge was found blown and on the 6th of December the 10th was pulled out of the line. The Group Command POL again withdrew from Germany to Launstroff, France, with its mission changed to direct support of the Cavalry which had relieved the Tankers and held a line generally along the dragons teeth between the Saar and Moselle.

Colonel JOHN E. THEIMER replaced Colonel CONDER as Group Commander on the 12th of December. Twice during December the Group was required to transfer 5% of its Table or Organization strength to the Infantry.

When the enemy made his attack in the Ardennes the 274th and 695th Armored Field Artillery Battalions were taken from the Group and for the night 21-22 December the defense of the line between the rivers depended on the Cavalry, one medium artillery battalion (689th) and the 5th Field Artillery Group Headquarters, and Headquarters Battery. However on the 22nd the 284th Field Artillery Battalion (105mm howitzer, truck drawn), the 558th Field Artillery Battalion (155 gun, self-propelled) were attached to the Group, infantry of the 90th Division took over approximately half of the Cavalry sector, and the forces were echeloned in depth to make a formidable defensive system. The Group retained its mission with the Cavalry and so moved its Command Post to Kirsch, where it remained until the 3rd of February 1945. While here the mission was changed to general support in the zone of the 94th Infantry Division when that Division relieved the 90th and took over in the zone of the Cavalry, the Cavalry being shifted to the right flank, on the 8th of January. An elaborate defensive plan was made with two delaying positions and the final defensive position in the Maginot Line. Routes were reconnoitered, Observation Posts selected and surveyed in, and positions prepared.

On the 27th of December P47 fighters committed hostile acts. and dropped bombs on the battery position of B Battery 733rd Field Artillery Battalion. They were engaged by our ground defenses and one was shot down. The pilot, an American Major, read his map incorrectly for the front lines had not changed in that sector in over a month.

After the Hun lost his initiative in the north, the 94th engaged in limited objective attacks. To prevent a major breakthrough the Germans brought the 11th Panzer Division into the line. Attrition on the material of this division was very high. All the air sections of the Group cooperated in an original patrol from the first faint light of dawn until the last sometimes later glimmer at dusk, so effectively that approximately forty of the sixty-five tanks originally brought in by the Germans were known to have been destroyed. The weapons primarily used by the air observers for these tank missions was the 155mm howitzer of the 689th Field Artillery Battalion.

From the unit history of my father's unit, the 5th Field Artillery Group.

Yushchenko has record dioxin level
New tests reveal the level of dioxin in the blood of Ukrainian presidential candidate Viktor Yushchenko is more than 6,000 times higher than normal, according to the expert analyzing the samples. The concentration, about 100,000 units per gram of blood fat, is the second highest ever recorded, said Abraham Brouwer, professor of environmental toxicology at the Free University in Amsterdam, where blood samples taken last weekend in Vienna were sent for analysis.

A normal level of dioxin is between 15 and 45 units. Almost everyone has some level of dioxins because the toxic chemical is widespread in the environment — mainly from its industrial usages — and accumulates in the food chain. In the case of Yushchenko, Brouwer's team has narrowed the search from more than 400 dioxins to about 29 and is confident they will identify the poison by week's end. That, in turn, could provide clues for the investigation of the alleged poisoning. "From a (chemical) fingerprint, at least you can deduce what kind of sources might have been involved," Brouwer told The Associated Press. "The labs will ... try to find out whether it matches any of the batches of dioxins that are around, so that maybe you can trace it back to where it was ordered or where it came from."

Experts say Yushchenko, whose face has been pockmarked and disfigured, has probably experienced the worst effects already and should gradually recover, with no impairment to his working ability. ...

So who holds the record (and are they listed in Guinness Book of World Records)? My vote (since it is shown in "per gram of blood fat" units) is Michael Moore! Any seconds on that nomination?

BNP Boss Remains Defiant After Arrest
The leader of the British National Party remained defiant tonight after being questioned on suspicion of inciting racial hatred. Nick Griffin claims his arrest this morning was part of a government campaign to "demonise" his party."This is an electoral scam to get the Muslim block vote back to the Labour Party," he said after being bailed. He added: "The police have nothing to do with this. The CPS, David Blunkett, John Prescott, Tony Blair are having a go at a dangerous political rival." West Yorkshire Police arrested the 45-year-old at his home in Wales around 6.15am. He was taken to Halifax Police Station where he was shown video recordings of some of his speeches. The arrest came as part of an investigation into the BBC programme Secret Agent.

The documentary featured covertly-filmed footage showing BNP activists confessing to race-hate crimes. Mr Griffin said he had not been charged with any offence but must report back to police in March. Three Bradford men, aged 29, 33, and 23, were charged with racially aggravated intentional harassment as part of the same investigation. The trio are due to appear before Leeds Magistrates' Court on December 16.

#1  Some how I don't think the BNP is a bunch of dumb clucks in sheets as they are made out to be in the British press. Fed up with being second class citizens in their own homeland with no response to their desires and needs from the current political parties is likely more true. #3  No Sock, BNP sez a lot of shite about lots of ppl in the UK, but only got in trouble - legal trouble - when they said mean things about the Allenists. Go figure.

#4  Some how I don't think the BNP is a bunch of dumb clucks in sheets I wouldn't bet on it. A few years ago a good friend of mine was unfortunate enough to have two BNP members as brothers in law. Talk about dumb and dumber. Both were arrested for football hooliganism. Spent hours practicing their story. Had it word perfect. Each backed the other up they were just innocent bystanders. Then at the trial the prosecution produced TV footage that showed one of them giving a good kicking to a policeman who was on the ground. Both went to prison.

#5  Aye, the BNP are stupid fascists. However, they're going to start attracting wider support when the balloon eventually goes up over here. I do have some sympathy for Griffin - compare his words with the criticisms of the Christian/Hindu/Jewish faiths voiced by Abu Hamza outside Finsbury Park mosque. Seafarious has it in a nutshell.

#6  Most BNP have a time share option on the collective braincell they have . Although most choose not to use it . :)
Posted by: MacNails || 12/16/2004 4:42 Comments || Top||

#7  There was also this one when some BNP members mistakenly hired a black DJ because he "sounded white over the phone", and other members of the party ofcourse walked out of the hotel at the outrage of having black people around.

"Traditionally someone stands and says what's happened in the year or in the elections. But it was a bit difficult to say we were even the BNP. We even had to be careful what we said when we did the raffle so we didn't offend this guy."

Heehee...

#8  So they are that kind of "Nationalists" too bad.
Can't fault them for being stupid enough to say what they think even if they are bigots. Repressing them just makes that type more popular if anyone ever botherd to notice. I have noticed however lots of the criminals I see a BBC online don't look anglo saxon so I am sure they (The BNP) get quite a bit of a receptive hearing in many quarters.

#9  Yup, they're getting more and more of a following for obvious reasons - eventually the scales will tip and a major political party (3 guesses who) will seize the immigration/integration issue for mainstream discussion (and not a day too soon.)

Fifth Column
US Press Whines and Whimpers
BOSTON (Reuters) - America's First Amendment turned 213 years old on Wednesday, but supporters of the bulwark of personal liberty and free press are hardly celebrating. The free press -- a linchpin of America's proud democracy -- faces its toughest challenge in a generation thanks to legal assaults that have left one U.S. journalist in home detention and others facing prison. A flurry of well-publicized scandals at some of the country's top news organizations has sullied the media's image and only made matters worse.

With other nations expecting America to lead the world in press freedoms, the stakes could not be higher, said Committee to Protect Journalists Executive Director Ann Cooper. "The very big concern for us is if journalists are imprisoned in these cases it sends a terrible message around the world," she said.

Imprisoning journalists is typically associated with tyrannies and dictatorships, making it ironic that U.S. judges in the past six months have threatened at least eight reporters with sanctions or jail time for not naming sources, said First Amendment Center Ombudsman Paul McMasters.

Free press rights in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution have come under attack many times since the 45-word clause took effect Dec. 15, 1791. McMasters said the last big assault came when Richard Nixon was president. "Not since then can I recall a time where the nation's free press has been tested so intensely," he said, noting that Nixon's Attorney General John Mitchell was not mindful of balancing the need for press freedoms.
...
Funny, the only time you hear the US press talk about a Proud American Democracy is when it's their power in the balance. The press, of course, has done nothing whatsoever to invite such derision, challenge, and scrutiny. J-Schools have always taught them to be socialist tools and foils and to be as partisan as possible. Everyone knows this. So, sniff sniff, why is everyone picking on them? Heh, heh.

#1  Un? WTF? The first amendment doesn't give you a license to break the law. Break the law, go to jail. If you consort with criminals expect to get handed a jail sentence from time to time. As far as I know there is no federal shield law. Yes federal judges can toss you into jail and keep the key. This is the real world everyone else lives in. If you don't like it get a new job.

They're not in trouble for what they said, they're in trouble because they're breaking the law! What the heck makes this so hard for them to understand?

Specificly, the real problem is not what the reporters are saying, but rather what the reporters are not saying. Who spilled the beans?

It goes well with the fact that where in most of the rest of the world only the rich/powerful are fat, here in the U.S. typicly only the poor/powerless are fat.

#5  Hmmm, seems that journalists are prepared to go to jail to protect the sanctity of the Source, except when the Sources in question are those who told Novak that Valerie Plame was with the CIA. Then it's the sources who need to be outed and jailed. Kinda funny, doncha think? Or doncha?

#6  They're in the slam for contempt, and can get out any time they like - by telling the judge what s/he wants to know.

There IS NO LICENSE to break the law implied in a journalism degree, folks.

#1  My take...

There are A) religious people, B) people who have religion in their lives, C) people who have no religion in their lives, and D) anti-religious people. The A group, as I define the terms, put "X" (Insert diety here) in the driver's seat and blindly follow what they are taught / ordered to do. The B group uses religion as a reference, a model, a ruleset, a guide employing the tenets of their religion. The C group, of which I am a member, contains a range of people - most of whom have cherry-picked the world's religions and ideologies to build a custom set of ideas and rules - and employ it just the same as B. The D group demonizes the A group just as the A group demonizes them. B & C are very similar in practice. Only A & D actually cause concern among rational people.

The Dhimmis don't "get it" now and they won't "get it" tomorrow. Any attempt to fake it will be transparent to B & C - they are our society's Bullshit Detectors.

$0.02. Dhimmis owe me change or a refund.

#2  .com excellent analysis...but.....I think you missed a category that includes lots of people including myself. Call it B) subset A. They have experienced real life events that show them that there is more beyond just the here and now.

It's not "religion in their lives"' but an understanding of something deeper that cannot be explained in words.

It's a bit like love. (I know you love your dau) People who have never been in love say, "how do you know if you are in love". People who have been in love say, "you just know", but they can't describe it. It's there, you know it if it's there - but you can't "explain" it to others. It's a wonderful deep experience filled with joy and good emotions.

I say this -not to get convert or to enlighten- but just to make a point. In regards to Dems trying to speak the language of religion, Dems are like seven year olds discussing puppy love. How can I make Tommy love me? ...or ..How can I show Tommy I love him? It's cute..but clueless. Those who have experienced "love" or spiritual awareness share a knowledge of what they have. They can discuss it on real terms with real emotions but only to others who have experienced it. Like discussions of love -if you've had it you understand, and those who haven't don't. Dems (as noted here) don't get it and to anyone who does, these pretenders are painfully obvious.

#3  You can slice up B into degrees if you like, heh.

Lots of people find love hard to define... you wouldn't like my def since it tends toward the pragmatic and minimalist side - and no, it's not a snarky sex comment, lol!

I'll presume you're referring to "belief" - a topic I know about but, indeed, have not experienced. I used to play golf with a Southern Baptist preacher - a very smart guy, a very nice guy, semi-charismatic, played once a month - and we "argued" belief for 18 holes every time, lol! So I can debate with you, but that's not constructive, as I tried to tell him every time - something you already recognize. Either you've "felt" it or you haven't Me, nope. You, Yes! And good for you, too, heh. I will never denigrate that which I have not experienced - as long as it isn't being forced onto anyone and serves some good (such as peace of mind for the believer) i.e is victimless.

It's those pushy types at the poles, "Believe or die!" and it's opposite but equally deranged, "We will bury you!" which get my dander up, heh.

Together, we'll smoke out the phonies - of all stripes, lol!

Peace - and have a very Merry Christmas!

Yahoo! News - Zell Miller to Honor Swift Boat Vets
WASHINGTON - For one night only, it'll be spitballs and Swift Boats together on the same stage — a who's who of Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites) bashing. The American Conservative Union on Thursday announced it has tapped Sen. Zell Miller (news, bio, voting record), D-Ga., to present the "Courage Under Fire" award to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth at the Conservative Political Action Conference's Feb. 16 banquet.

Miller and the group of Vietnam veterans were behind perhaps the campaign's two fiercest and most memorable attacks on Kerry's unsuccessful presidential bid.

Miller, who is retiring next month, scorched Kerry in a Republican National Convention keynote address in which he suggested the four-term Massachusetts Democrat had voted to cut so many weapons systems, it appeared he wanted to send the military to war with only spitballs.

The Swift Boat Veterans for Truth ran ads after the Democratic convention questioning whether Kerry was in fact the decorated Vietnam War veteran that he claimed to be.

"The swift boat veterans performed an invaluable service to America," Miller said in a statement. "These veterans took a lot of undeserved criticism for daring to speak the truth."

Zell Miller joining Fox
Edited for brevity.
Retiring U.S. Sen. Zell Miller, the conservative Georgia Democrat who backed President Bush's re-election, is joining Fox News Channel as a contributor. Miller, who made a memorable TV appearance when he challenged MSNBC host Chris Matthews to a duel, will be seen on a variety of Fox News programs starting Jan. 6, a Fox spokesman said Tuesday. "I am excited to be joining Fox News Channel and am eager to contribute to the continuing success of the network," Miller said in a network release.

Yukos pins hopes on US bankruptcy court to stop sale
EFL.
Stricken Russian oil giant Yukos was hoping that a US court would grant it bankruptcy protection, scaring off Western banks planning to finance a Russian state-directed takeover of its main asset. Yukos filed for voluntary bankruptcy on Wednesday in a US district court in Houston, Texas, and petitioned for an injunction to prevent Russian authorities from proceeding with Sunday's fire-sale of Yuganskneftegaz...Russian newspapers described the eleventh-hour US legal appeal as a "desperate attempt" to halt the auction which would not deter the Kremlin and the state-appointed gas bosses at Gapzrom from putting Yugansk under the hammer. But they said that it could frighten the multinational banks led by Germany's Deutsche Bank and which include US financial giant JP Morgan, Dutch ABN Amro and France's BNP Paribas, who are lending Gazprom 10 billion euros (13 billion dollars).
