[Stripes] A senior al-Shabab leader who played a key role in plotting deadly attacks throughout East Africa has been killed in an airstrike in Somalia, U.S. Africa Command said Tuesday.
Yusuf Jiis was one of three al-Shabab members killed in the April 2 airstrike, AFRICOM said. The strike was one of a flurry of attacks in Somalia in recent days.
Jiis was "violent, ruthless, and responsible for the loss of many innocent lives," AFRICOM commander Gen. Stephen Townsend said in a statement. "His removal makes Somalia and neighboring countries safer."
AFRICOM has launched six airstrikes in Somalia since April 2, including one on Monday in which five terrorists were killed, it said.

This Operation started a week ago. For the kind of razzia-dominant warfare they're waging, ~50 dead a day is a pretty big body count. The high water mark for US casualties in Iraq came to about 4 a day (average was about 1). During WWII, it was about ~630 a day (average was ~220).

Abu Salim is known for its maximum security prison in Tripoli. It was notorious during the rule of Muammar Gaddafi for alleged mistreatment and human rights abuses, including a massacre in 1996 in which Human Rights Watch estimated 1,270 prisoners were killed. However, in 2011 investigators from CNN and others found only animal bones at the site; it announced further investigations.
More investigations ended inconclusively.

[Libya Observer] A total blackout has been reported in western and southern Libya by the General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL), which says its control teams are trying to figure out the reason behind the power outage.
GECOL said Tuesday that the total blackout in the west and south was out of the blue, adding that its teams started working on regaining power in the two affected regions in hours to come.
Power grids in Libya and the general network has been under regular outages and rolling blackouts in different cities in the country, especially in peak periods in winter and summer.
Blackouts in western Libya, especially Tripoli ...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn... , add to the tragic situation in a city under constant artillery shelling and outbreak of Coronavirus, let alone the latest outage of water as a group that could be loyal to Khalifa Haftar ...Self-proclaimed Field Marshal, served in the Libyan army under Muammar Qadaffy, and took part in the coup that brought Qadaffy to power in 1969. He became a prisoner of war in Chad in 1987. While held prisoner, he and his fellow officers formed a group hoping to overthrow Qadaffy, so it's kind of hard to describe him as a Qadaffy holdover. He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. Haftar launched a campaign against the GNC and its Islamic fundamentalist allies. His campaign allowed elections to take place to replace the GNC, but then developed into a civil war. Guess you can't win them all. Actually, he is, but slowly... 's forces cut off water supplies on Tripoli and western Libya by shutting valves at one of the sites of the Man-Made River.

An Israeli citizen was arrested on suspicion of having links with #Iranian intelligence agencies and providing intelligence on strategic sites in #Israel, the Jerusalem Post reports
An Israeli citizen was arrested on suspicion of having links with Iranian intelligence agencies and providing intelligence on strategic sites in Israel, the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) announced on Tuesday.
The man, whose identity is under gag order, was indicted on serious security offenses in the Lod District Court.
The man was arrested on March 16 in a joint Shin Bet and Israel Police operation. At the time of his arrest, authorities seized encryption devices as well as a disk drive that he tried to destroy during his arrest.
According to the investigation, he had been in contact with Iranian intelligence officials as well as an operative of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine in Lebanon, Khaled Yamani.
The man had also held meetings with Iranian intelligence officers several times while abroad during which he is said to have received funds, training, secret encryption tools and more so that he could continue to be in contact with his handlers “in an encrypted manner even after his return to Israel,” the Shin Bet said.
According to the security agency’s investigation, as part of his meetings with Iranian intelligence officials, he was asked to provide information on several issues, including: security and strategic sites in Israel; the way in which the rifts in Israeli society could be deepened; recruit Israeli-Arabs to help Iran; and carrying out terror attacks against targets in Israel in the name of liberating Palestine.
