| #1 Abu Salim is known for its maximum security prison in Tripoli. It was notorious during the rule of Muammar Gaddafi for alleged mistreatment and human rights abuses, including a massacre in 1996 in which Human Rights Watch estimated 1,270 prisoners were killed. However, in 2011 investigators from CNN and others found only animal bones at the site; it announced further investigations. More investigations ended inconclusively. |
