UC-Berkeley police arrest suspect in campus attack on conservative activist, Trump praises activist in CPAC speech
More on this story from yesterday.
[FOXNEWS] University of Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party,-Berkeley officials on Friday tossed in the clink
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
a suspect who allegedly assaulted a conservative activist on campus last month.

Zachary Greenberg, 28, was arrested by university police about 1 p.m., after a judge issued an arrest warrant in the Feb. 19 attack on Hayden Williams, the school’s public affairs department said in a statement.

Arrest records from the sheriff’s office say Greenberg was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and attempting to cause great bodily injury.

The arrest came on the same day that officials decided to reopen the investigation, which had concluded a week earlier.

Williams, 26, who is not a student but is a field representative for the conservative group The Leadership Institute, was approached by two men who, he said, reacted with antagonism to the signs. One of them is said to have punched Williams several times. The recruitment table was knocked over and signs were ripped, according to a UC-Berkeley alert on its website. Williams told Fox News last week that his attacker also threatened to shoot him.
A second man? I look forward to discovering his identity, and both men’s connections. Why was Mr. Greenberg on campus that day, and dressed all in black, too?

'He took a hard punch in the face for all of us!' Trump praises conservative campus activist assaulted at UC-Berkeley, calls him up to stage as surprise CPAC guest

[DailyMail] Trump called Hayden Williams up to the stage as he spoke to the cheering crowd at the conservative conference in National Harbor, Maryland on Saturday afternoon.

’Do me a favor - sue him!' Trump told Williams onstage at CPAC, as Williams gave a double thumbs-up. 'He's probably got nothing, but sue him forever. Sue the college, the university, and maybe sue the state.'

'He took a hard punch in the face for all of us, remember,' Trump continued. 'And we can never allow that to happen.'

'He's going to be a very wealthy young man. Go get 'em, Hayden,' the President concluded, shaking Williams' hand and embracing the young activist.

Williams' surprise appearance tied into Trump's announcement during the more than two hour speech that that he will soon sign an executive order 'requiring colleges and universities to support free speech.'

'If they want our dollars, and we give it to them by the billions, they have to allow ... all people to speak. And if they don't, it will be very costly,' he said.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Mountain lion strangled by Colorado man was actually an orphaned cougar cub Maine Coon
DENVER (Reuters) - The mountain lion strangled by a Colorado man after it attacked him on a jogging trail last month was a young cub, weighing no more than 40 pounds (18 kg) and likely orphaned but not starving, state wildlife officials said on Friday.

The encounter between the young predator and Travis Kauffman garnered international headlines when authorities revealed that the 31-year-old man had not only survived a rare mountain lion attack but had suffocated the cat by stepping on its throat.

A necropsy - the animal equivalent of an autopsy - showed the cougar was 4 to 5 months old, based on the condition of its teeth, and the results confirmed Kauffman’s account of the struggle, Colorado Parks and Wildlife said in a statement.

"The cause of death was determined to be ... blunt trauma and strangulation," the agency said.

2 dead, several injured as car hits pedestrians in New Orleans while city celebrates Mardi Gras
[ABC] Two people are dead and several others were injured after a car allegedly crashed into a number of bicyclists and pedestrians in New Orleans -- about two miles away from the Mardi Gras festivities, police said.

The New Orleans Police Department said it has a suspect involved with the crash in custody. The driver is undergoing standard testing, but police said they believe the driver was intoxicated.

Tashonty Toney, 32, has been charged with two counts of vehicular homicide, seven counts of vehicular negligent injury, hit and run and reckless operation.

Belleville, IL family hoping car break-in thief returns child's prosthetic leg
[St. Louis Post Dispatch] BELLEVILLE • While trying to quietly get her sleeping 4-year-old daughter into her Belleville apartment and into bed Thursday night, Brie Rainey forgot to lock her car doors.

Sometime between the hours of 8 p.m. and 8 a.m., someone broke into her and her neighbor’s unlocked cars in the parking lot to their apartment complex and stole her 3-year-old son’s black backpack.

Inside was a custom-made prosthetic leg that has made it possible for Josiah to walk since he was 1 even though he was born without a left leg.

Rainey estimates it could take as long as four months to replace the $10,000 device. Most of the cost was covered by insurance and Shriners Hospital for Children, but the Raineys still have a portion to pay.

"Think about not walking for four months and how much you lose in that time period as well as what you could have gained in that period," she said. "It’s a big deal.

"We know we will get it replaced, but we are hoping we find the old one so we don’t have to go through the whole process."

Belleville police Chief William Clay did not return a phone call seeking comment.

Unemployed millennial is arrested for throwing a phone at her mother's head because she wouldn't drive her to a yoga class
[MAIL] A 30-year-old woman has been arrested for throwing a phone at her mother's head because she wouldn't drive her to a yoga class.

Holly Albert, who is unemployed, has been charged with second-degree assault over the bloody incident at her family home in Potomac, Maryland.

Albert, who was only arrested last month despite the incident occurring 18 months ago, left her mother bleeding profusely from the head following the ordeal.

Her mother had called 911 to report the domestic violence incident.

Police arrived to find the mother wearing a blood-soaked shirt with her hair matted down, according to court documents obtained by ABC7.

Gun slips from (the dreaded Mexican carry) waistband, man shot in nether regions
[News-13] MARION, Ind. (WISH) - A 46-year-old man accidentally shot himself in genitals Thursday after a gun slipped from his waistband, police said.

Marion Police Department issued a news release via Facebook that said Mark Anthony Jones did not have a license for the Hi-Point 9mm gun he was carrying.

Jones, in the emergency room of Marion General Hospital, told police he was walking at about 6:44 a.m. Thursday on a riverside trail near the Marion Girl Scout Cabin. That's west of the Washington Street bridge over the Mississinewa River. He said when the gun began to slip from his waistband, he reached to adjust the firearm and it discharged.

"The bullet entered just above his penis and exited his scrotum," the release said.

The gun was not in a holster.

Grant County prosecutors will review the case to consider possible criminal charges.

The flying -117s are, as M. Murcek suggests, just there to test sensors and other gear. The F-35s - which we now know have flown combat missions - are stealthier than the -117, faster, more maneuverable, and can shoot back.

Afghanistan
Afghan soldiers of 205th Corps spend whole day to rescue flood victims
Winning hearts and minds while building esprit d’corps — also important tasks for a young army.
[KhaamaPress] The 205th Corps and the Afghan Air Force in Kandahar have spent the day rescuing local residents in Kandahar and Zabul from high floods within these provinces. The flooding began last night and has destroyed infrastructure such as bridges and roads making travel today impossible for residents.

The security forces quickly reacted and have rescued residents from rising waters by helicopters to take them to designated safe places until the flooding dissipates.

"It is our duty to save and protect our people from natural disasters like these," said 205th Corps spokesperson.

"There was a school in Kandahar City where the waters were rising too high for the children to get out, the 205th Corps went to this school and dug a ditch to help alleviate some of the water."

The Afghan Airforce has played a vital role in rescuing civilians. They have dedicated air assets to reach areas where bridges have been damaged or the water is too high to travel. Kandahar Deputy Governor Muneeb personally met the aircraft at a pickup location to escort residents onto the aircraft.

"There has been a lot of homes destroyed, it has been very bad. The 205th Corps will continue to work with the Afghan Air Force to do our best to reach those who are in trouble." said the 205th Corps spokesperson

At least 20 killed by flash floods in southern Afghanistan: UN

[AlAhram] At least 20 people were killed by flash floods in southern Afghanistan's Kandahar province, the UN said Saturday, as heavy rains swept away homes and vehicles and potentially damaged thousands of houses.

The United Nations
...the Oyster Bay money pit...
Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said widespread flooding indudated Kandahar city and surrounding districts in the province, with 97mm of rain falling in affected areas in the last 30 hours.

"At least 10 people, including children, are still missing," said the UN agency in a statement.

"It is anticipated that up to 2,000 homes may have been damaged", with severe damage to infrastructure also being reported.

Kandahar's deputy governor Abdul Hanan Moneeb said the flooding was the worst in at least seven years, with many nomadic herders camped in the area swept away by the floodwaters along with their livestock.

The official added that 400 families have been rescued by the Afghan army since the flooding began late Friday night.

Rescue operations, however, were largely delayed due to heavy rainfall, Raziq Shirzai, the provincial commander of the Afghan air force, told AFP.

Disasters such as avalanches and flash floods often hit mountainous areas and river valleys of Afghanistan as snow melts in the spring and summer. It is made worse by deforestation.

Heavy snowfall across large swathes of Afghanistan this winter has raised fears of severe flooding as spring approaches, following years of devastating drought in the country.

Nearly 50 people have been killed as of February 12 due to flooding in Afghanistan so far this year, according to the UN.

Over 50 People Missing in Nigeria After Pipeline Explodes
(WARRI, Nigeria) — More than 50 people are missing after a leaking oil pipeline exploded and caused a stampede in southern Nigeria, a local official said Saturday.

The blast early Friday caused massive oil spillage in the Nembe kingdom in Bayelsa state, the Nembe Chiefs Council spokesman, Chief Nengi James-Eriworio, told The Associated Press.

The Nembe trunk line is operated by the Port Harcourt-based Aiteo Group and carries crude to the Bonny export terminal. Aiteo had yet to comment on the explosion. It was not immediately clear if the pipeline had been shut down.

Video obtained by the AP shows a large blaze from the ruptured pipeline at night as villagers look on. “If they turn off the oil well from the station, the pressure inside the pipeline would reduce, causing the flame to burn out,” one person is heard in the background explaining.

Not sure what the situation is here, but I think there are some situations where that would be a bad idea. There should be shutoffs along the pipeline, and then what is left in the line will burn out.

Beside, at that point, unless people are stupid, casualties are ended though the show is spectacular.

Britain
Salisbury Novichok attack link to Russia made using Google
[BBC] The first police on the scene of the poisoning of the former Russian spy Sergei Skripal realised the seriousness of the case after Googling his name.

Mr Skripal and his daughter Yulia were targeted with the nerve agent Novichok on 4 March 2018 in Salisbury.

Sgt Tracey Holloway said after finding his name online they realised "it could be something bigger".

A church service, ahead of the first anniversary of the attack, is due to take place later.

St Thomas's Church, in the city, will remember the victims and offer thanks to the community.

TEST SAMPLES
Mr Skripal's house and 11 other potentially infected sites were ruled safe on Friday.

The operation included taking thousands of test samples from across Salisbury and nearby Amesbury, where Dawn Sturgess, 44, was fatally poisoned in July.

Britain has accused Russia of carrying out the poisoning of the Skripals.

Russia has also been blamed for the death of Ms Sturgess and the poisoning of Mr Rowley, who are believed to have come into contact with a bottle of Novichok discarded by the Skripals' attackers.

U.S. Increases Pressure on Maduro With New Sanctions, Revokes Visas of Associates
[Free Beacon] The United States imposed new sanctions on six Venezuelan security officials and revoked the visas of dozens of associates and their families with ties to President Nicolas Maduro, in the latest move to pile pressure on him to step down.

The U.S. Treasury said the six current or former security officials controlled groups that blocked humanitarian aid from reaching people in Venezuela last weekend from neighboring countries Colombia and Brazil.

"We are sanctioning members of Maduro's security forces in response to the reprehensible violence, tragic deaths, and unconscionable torching of food and medicine destined for sick and starving Venezuelans," U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said.

China-Japan-Koreas
US, South Korea to end key joint military exercise Foal Eagle
[ABS-CBN] SEOUL -- The US and South Korea said Sunday they will end their annual large-scale joint military exercises as Washington pursues efforts to improve ties with North Korea.

The decision comes days after the conclusion of US President Donald Trump's second summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Hanoi, which ended without a formal agreement but with both sides suggesting they would keep talking.

Trump has ruled out withdrawing any of the 28,500 US forces based in South Korea to defend it from its nuclear-armed neighbor, which invaded in 1950.

Any such drawdown would face strong pushback from the US Congress and Japan, whose conservative government is deeply wary of North Korea's intentions.

But the US president has complained repeatedly over the cost of the military drills, which Pyongyang has always condemned as provocative rehearsals for invasion.

During a Saturday phone call between South Korean Defence Minister Jeong Kyeong-doo and his US counterpart Patrick Shanahan, "both sides decided to conclude the Key Resolve and Foal Eagle series of exercises," according to a Pentagon statement.

Fiat Chrysler to Add More Than 6,000 Jobs in Michigan, Lay Off Nearly 1,400 in Illinois
[Free Beacon] Fiat Chrysler announced plans Tuesday to invest $4.5 billion in its existing Michigan plants and create nearly 6,500 new jobs as a result.

At the same time, the automaker said it will eliminate nearly 1,400 jobs at a plant in northern Illinois.

In Detroit, the investment will help "increase capacity to meet growing demand for its Jeep and Ram brands, including production of two new Jeep-branded white space products, as well as electrified models," according to a news release from the company.

"Three years ago, FCA set a course to grow our profitability based on the strength of the Jeep and Ram brands by realigning our U.S. manufacturing operations," Mike Manley, Fiat Chrysler's chief executive officer, said in a statement. "Today's announcement represents the next step in that strategy. It allows Jeep to enter two white space segments that offer significant margin opportunities and will enable new electrified Jeep products, including at least four plug-in hybrid vehicles and the flexibility to produce fully battery-electric vehicles."

#2  My info is somewhat dated, but I believe that plant in Illinois employs about twice that number of people. It's likely going down to one production shift due to (as stated) unsold inventory.

The May-June time frame is about the time auto plants shut down for model change or 'changeover'. Could have something to do with that as well. The particular facility opened in about 1965 and has put a lot of beans on tables.

#6  About second opinions:

Ever since I was a wee lad, I've always had a fear of someone under my bed at night.

So, I went to a shrink and told him: “I've got problems. Every time I go to bed I think there's somebody under it. I'm scared. I think I'm going crazy.”

“Just put yourself in my hands for one year," said the shrink. "Come talk to me three times a week and we should be able to get rid of those fears.”

“How much do you charge?”

“Eighty dollars per visit,” replied the doctor.

“I'll sleep on it,” I said.

Six months later the doctor met me on the street. “Why didn't you come to see me about those fears you were having”? he asked.

“Well, eighty bucks a visit, three times a week for a year, is $12,480.00. A bartender cured me for $10.00. I was so happy to have saved all that money that I went and bought me a new pickup truck.”

“Is that so?” With a bit of an attitude he said, “And how, may I ask, did a bartender cure you?”

“He told me to cut the damn legs off the bed. Ain't nobody under there now.”

And that’s why getting a second opinion can be your best option.

French yellow vests protest for 16th straight weekend
[AlAhram] Thousands of French yellow vests protested Saturday for a 16th straight weekend in Gay Paree and other cities to show they are keeping up momentum against the government's economic policies they see as favoring the rich.

In Gay Paree, more than a thousand protesters marched peacefully through well-off western neighborhoods of the capital, starting from the Arc de Triomphe monument to reach a southern plaza. The demonstration was placed under tight security.

Police forces were dispersing dozens of protesters who remained near the Champs-Elysees avenue.

Many other rallies were organized across the country. Some brief scuffles between protesters and police broke out in the cities of Lyon, Lille and Nantes, but no serious injuries were reported.

Organizers said they want to maintain pressure on the government as a two-month "grand debate'' initiated by Macron to let ordinary French people express their views on the country's economic and democratic issues is ending this month.

Sophie Tissier, a coordinator of the Gay Paree protest, told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named that "we keep protesting every Saturday because Macron doesn't respond at all to the yellow vests' demands. We want to rebuild our democracy and change today's political system.''

"Macron is contemptuous and ... does not even try to understand that there are people that are living in great poverty and precariousness, and that there are so many inequalities,'' she added.

Supports for the movement has ebbed in recent weeks as outbreaks of violence continue, including last month when a few protesters hurled a torrent of anti-Semitic insults at noted philosopher Alain Finkielkraut on the sidelines of a Gay Paree march.

The movement was named after the fluorescent vests that French motorists must carry in their vehicles for emergencies.

The protests started in November to oppose fuel tax hikes, but have expanded into a broader public rejection of Macron's economic policies, which protesters say favor big businesses and the wealthy over ordinary workers.

Macron has since announced a package of measures worth about 10 billion euros ($11.4 billion) to boost workers' and retirees' purchasing power and launched a national debate
... an expenditure of personal wind at the national level that leads to face-making and other histrionics but can't be shown to have ever solved an issue ...
that is taking place through meetings across La Belle France and a dedicated website until mid-March.

Many yellow vests reject the debate which they consider as politically driven to serve the government's interests.

Southeast Asia
'We could have ended that thing in six months.'
Thanks for sending me this, Stu.
[CadeMartin] Operation Rolling Thunder was the code name for an American aerial bombing campaign during the Vietnam War. U.S. military aircraft attacked targets throughout North Vietnam from March 1965 to October 1968.

Over 2,000 aircraft attacked thousands of targets, dropping more than 7 million tons of bombs. The gradual and sustained aerial bombing campaign ranks as one of the most massive in U.S. history.

For years, in the face of so many loud voices taking stock and making record of this controversial war, the men who flew the missions have been notably silent.

Over War is a portrait series that reveals the scope and reality of the conflict from their unique vantage point flying over the war below.

These are the Thunderchief F-105 Air Force pilots of Operation Rolling Thunder.

...Lyndon Johnson is right next to him.

And if you haven't yet, read Dereliction of Duty by H.R. McMaster (yes, that one). The short version: The entire National Command Authority - the President, the National Security Advisors, the SecDef, and the service chiefs - knowingly and willfully betrayed their country and its armed forces in Vietnam.

#8  We say that Germany drew the wrong lesson from World War III — not about genocide but about national self defence — but those generals drew a wrong lesson from that war as well. I understand that they did not want to precipitate nuclear war with the Soviet Union, but this was not the way to accomplish it.

Hundreds march through Beirut to protest child marriage
[ALMASDARNEWS] Hundreds erupted into the streets of Beirut on Saturday in protest against child marriage in Leb, and to call for parliament to make 18 the legal minimum age for marriage in the country.

"We are here to say that it is time for us to approve a law prohibiting the marriage of minors because it is not only a feminist demand but a human demand that must be recognised," said Hoda Shokier, a protester.

Religious community courts currently determine the legal age of marriage, with each court enforcing its own law, some of which allow girls under 15 years of age to be married.

#2  in the Columbia U. case the plaintiff seems to me to be something of a whack job who may have broken up with someone, then accused him of rape, then sought counseling and therapy, then seduced the counselor and is now suing the University.
