Two Dutch soldiers were killed and one was wounded in separate incidents in Afghanistan, the Netherlands' Defense Ministry said early Sunday. The men who were killed, a 20-year old private and a 22-year old corporal, died during a fire-fight with "opposing militant forces," on Saturday at around 9 p.m. local time, the Ministry said. The fight took place around 5 kilometers northwest of Camp Hadrian, near Deh Rawod, said Gen. Dick Berlijn, the commander of Dutch forces in Afghanistan, in a statement. The soldiers' families have been informed, but their names have not yet been released, the ministry said.
The injured man suffered wounds to both legs in a separate fight at around the same time, but is expected to survive, the ministry said. Two Afghan soldiers were killed later the same evening in more fighting, the ministry said.

Egyptian authorities arrested approximately two months ago a 14-member terror cell comprised of engineers and army officers that was planning to carry out terror attacks against Israel under the auspices of al-Qaeda, Al-Jazeera reported Saturday. The cell-members were planning to assemble an unmanned aircraft to attack targets inside Israel, the report said, quoting Egyptian defense officials.
The cell allegedly manufactured rockets similar in design to those used by Palestinian terror groups. According to the report, the head of the cell - an engineer from the University of Alexandria - visited Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates and met with a number of Afghan men, allegedly members of al-Qaeda.
The lawyer representing the alleged members of the cell told AFP that all of the arrests were made during November in the municipal areas of Alexandria and Cairo. Their lawyer denied the intentions attributed to his clients and claimed that the evidence against them was insubstantial.

Guinea-Bissau extradited five suspected members of al Qaeda to Mauritania on Saturday, a day after they were arrested in connection with the killing of four French tourists in Mauritania on Christmas Eve. Three attackers, whom Mauritanian officials have said were suspected Islamic militants linked to al Qaeda, shot dead the four French tourists and injured a fifth as they ate a picnic on a road in southern Mauritania almost three weeks ago.
Police in Guinea-Bissau arrested the five Mauritanian suspects on Friday and said two of them had admitted belonging to al Qaeda. At least three were wanted in direct connection with the murder of the French tourists, officials said. "Guinea-Bissau will pay for what it has done," one of the five Mauritanians said as he was bundled in handcuffs into a plane in Bissau. "Watch out! If I'd had a gun I would have killed you all," he shouted to members of the security forces around him, speaking in the local Creole language. The five men were taken into police custody on arrival in the Mauritanian capital Nouakchott a few hours later.
Bissau police on Friday arrested the first two men, whom they identified as Mohamed Ould Chabarnou and Sidi Ould Sidna, at the request of the French authorities, who helped track them down. The three others were arrested hours later. "The first two suspects have admitted that they are fighters of al Qaeda, that their motivations are political, and that they are hostile to the West," the deputy director of Guinea-Bissau's judicial police, Edmundo Mendes, said.

German authorities are investigating a threat of an attack on the justice ministry, reportedly by a team linked to Al Qaeda, the ministry said yesterday.
A ministry spokeswoman said its staff had been put on the alert following the warning, which press reports said had been telephoned to the Lebanese embassy in Berlin. Lebanese police had arrested the caller, named as Syrian Mohammed Ndoub, alleged to have links to Al Qeada and the Islamic Jihad movement. Ndoub said that a three-man squad, comprising a German of Turkish origin, a Saudi and an Australian, were in Germany with the intention of attacking the targets in Berlin.

The army has withdrawn soldiers from key checkposts in North Waziristan and a tribal jirga is negotiating a peace deal between pro-Taliban militants and the government, official sources and military spokesman said on Saturday. The situation has improved and the withdrawal of troops from certain checkposts is part of the re-alignment, Major General Waheed Arshad told Daily Times as barriers and strict checking at checkposts were abolished, according to eyewitnesses.
Paramilitary takeover: These posts are now manned by paramilitary soldiers. Barriers to movement have also been removed and the strict checking of people at these places has stopped, sources said on condition of anonymity.
Earlier, the Taliban announced a unilateral ceasefire till January 1, which was later extended to January 20. A tribal source reported that a tribal jirga was shuttling between the Taliban and government authorities to broker another peace deal. There are signs that the two sides are working on something similar to a peace deal. But we dont know how close they are to the deal because of secret negotiations, a tribal source close to the jirga told Daily Times on condition of anonymity.
Over 50 killed: Also on Saturday, security officials said that Pakistani troops had killed more than 50 Taliban militants on Wednesday after fighting off an attack on a military fort in South Waziristan. Chief military spokesman Major General Waheed Arshad told AFP that militants suffered heavy casualties in the encounter but said he had no official figures.

A group of suspected militants arrested last month were brainwashed by radical clerics near the Afghan border and were planning suicide attacks against the military, an intelligence official said on Saturday. The six suspects, including a retired army major, were arrested in December in raids in eastern Punjab. The arrests were made public this week. The suspects are yet to be charged. The official said the men worked under Al Qaida-linked Ahsanul Haq, a retired major said to be behind the November 1 suicide attack on a Pakistan Air Force bus in Sargodha. Police, meanwhile, shot and killed two suspected militants during a late Friday shootout in Multan, said Fayyaz Ahmad, an area police chief. Three other suspects fled, Ahmad added.

A significant number of Americans still believe that Iraq is a lost cause. In many cases this is due to their ideology, but some are simply not well informed. Even the political developments there have started to show major progress, but the results will have to become irrefutable before the public perception will align with the current reality.
General Petraeus is a terrific leader. He would have made a fine candidate for political office once his career is done if not for his surplus of integrity and deficit of grandiosity.

General Patraeus may yet get involved in the political arena after he retires, although probably as an appointee in the executive branch rather than as a politician. What interesting things would he do as Secretary of Defence under a Republican president, for example? Or Homeland Security? Or State?

Militants from a hitherto unknown group linked to Al Qaeda ransacked a private school in the northern Gaza Strip at dawn yesterday, its director said. A statement signed by the "Army of Believers, Al Qaeda in Palestine Organisation" was left behind at the American International School after the attack during which five buses and a car were set ablaze, Rabhi Salem said. "Armed men entered the school in Beit Lahiya during the night and ransacked rooms as well as adminstration offices, and stole several computers."
The raid on the school was the second in a week. On Wednesday armed men fired anti-tank rockets at it, causing serious damage to the building. "Polytheists and enemies of Islam are pursuing each day their work to destroy our youths, who are falling by the dozens into the swamps of vice and moral decadence," the statement found at the school said. "That is why we must re-establish the truth and warn everyone who might try to corrupt our youths or try to open such places of corruption," the statement added in apparent reference to the American International School. Hamas's interior ministry said in a statement: "An investigation was immediately launched into the attack and we will pursue and bring the attackers to justice regardless of their motives."
The school, which was also the target of a bomb attack in April 2007, is the only private school in the Gaza Strip, with an enrolment of 150 students. It was set up in 2000 by the privately owned Educational Services Overseas Limited, a company owned by Arab-American Walid Abushaqra which runs 10 schools in the region providing a British-American education.
The attacks comes as two members of the Hamas were helizapped killed in an Israeli air raid on the southern Gaza Strip yesterday, medics said. They were killed by the explosion of a missile, apparently fired from a drone, in which four others people were wounded.
Elesewhere, the bullet-riddled bodies of two Palestinians, one a Hamas policeman, were found on yesterday in separate areas of the Hamas-run Gaza Strip, a medical source said. Hamas policeman Shaaban Dogmush was found with a bullet to the head in the Juhr Al Deek region of the southern Gaza Strip, while the other victim Sami Suleiman was found in the north, the source said.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) Military Intelligence head Shanmuganathan Ravishankar No, not Ravi Shankar! alias "Col." Arulventhan a.k.a. Charles and three of his deputies were killed on January 5 when the vehicle they were travelling in was hit by a claymore mine.
The explosion occurred at a spot between Iluppaikkadavai and Pallamadu along the Mannar-Pooneryn Road in the Mannar District.
The LTTE accused the Armys deep penetration unit as being responsible. The Tigers were referring to assassination squads run by the armed forces, known officially as Long Range Reconnaissance Patrols (LRRP). The LRRP, referred to as deep penetration units by the LTTE, move into Tiger-controlled territory and ambush top Tiger leaders. Very long, read the whole thing. Special forces infiltrate enemy territory on assassination missions. Great stuff.
