#1 W sounds very sure of the outcome when speaking in Bahrain, but Petraeus is still cautious.

In both cases, that's good.

#2 From Bush's Speech:

"There is no doubt in my mind that we will succeed. There is no doubt in my mind that when history is written, the final page will say, 'Victory was achieved by the United States of America for the good of the world'."

If he would have left out "in my mind", it would be one of the best quotes of his presidency.

#3 A significant number of Americans still believe that Iraq is a lost cause. In many cases this is due to their ideology, but some are simply not well informed. Even the political developments there have started to show major progress, but the results will have to become irrefutable before the public perception will align with the current reality.

General Petraeus is a terrific leader. He would have made a fine candidate for political office once his career is done if not for his surplus of integrity and deficit of grandiosity.

#4 General Patraeus may yet get involved in the political arena after he retires, although probably as an appointee in the executive branch rather than as a politician. What interesting things would he do as Secretary of Defence under a Republican president, for example? Or Homeland Security? Or State?
