CNN President Jeff Zucker Says He Would Be Interested in Hiring Shepard Smith
[Epoch Times] CNN President Jeff Zucker said he would be interested in hiring former Fox News host Shepard Smith after he left the network earlier this month.

Smith announced that under the terms of his agreement, he "won’t be reporting elsewhere, at least in the near future."

But Zucker said that should the opportunity arise, he would consider hiring Smith, who spent 23 years at Fox.

"I think Shep’s a great journalist," Zucker said at a conference, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "I understand he’s not able to take any jobs for the foreseeable future. When he’s available, he is somebody who is very talented and I would be very open to talking to him."

Smith was one of the first Fox News hires in 1996 and was the manager of the breaking news division of the network.

"This is my last newscast here. Thank you for watching today and over the decades," the 55-year-old anchor said in mid-October. "It’s been an honor and my pleasure. Even in our currently polarized nation, it’s my hope that the facts will win the day, that the truth will always matter, and that journalism and journalists will thrive."

Man Doused In Flammable Liquid Set On Fire By Cop's Stun Gun
[seattleTimes] WEED, Calif. ‐ Authorities and family members say a man who had doused himself in a flammable liquid caught fire and was severely burned when a police officer fired a stun gun at him in California.
Oh shit.
The Redding Record Searchlight reported Wednesday that Paul Jason Hall is fighting for his life with burns covering 70% of his body. His relatives say the 47-year-old has a history of mental illness.

The police officer also suffered burns during the confrontation Saturday in the northern town of Weed.

He was not identified and his condition was unknown.

Siskiyou County authorities are investigating the incident, which began when the officer responded to reports of a suicidal man attempting to light himself on fire.
Mission accomplished.

Interesting systems-theory inspired, lowest risk tactic though. Thought up in Quantico probably. Shoot a man trying to kill himself with a stun-gun. Then whip out the cuffs while chanting a litany with a lot of 'Sirs' in it. Hold him in jug for being 'a defeatist with no sense'. This one will probably try again, and I wouldn't blame him.
Police in Weed declined comment because of the ongoing investigation.

The Rise of the Western Spy Assclown
Something for Besoeker
[AmGreatness] There was once a time when Washington needed spies with the power to operate clandestinely in a free society. Soviet Communism was an evil ideology that spread its error by revolutionary movements through what was then called "the domino theory."

Sometime in the early 1990s, though, Russia ceased to embody an ideology and became a nation again. Alexander Solzhenitsyn moved back, and Russians stopped caring so much whether their little girl gymnasts got perfect 10s on the balance beam.

Rat-eating monkeys in Malaysia stun scientists
h/t Instapundit
[NYPost] -Killer monkeys were found to be catching and gobbling up large rats in Malaysia.

Stunned scientists discovered the rat-catching macaques on palm oil plantations and say the hungry predators could be used as pest control.

The southern pig-tailed macaques were typically thought to chow down on fruit, only occasionally hunting meaty prey ‐ and generally only small lizards and birds.

However, scientists have now confirmed that these monkeys are also regularly snatching and devouring large rats.

...The report tracked macaques between January 2016 and September 2018 in plantations around the Segari Melintang forest reserve.

Macaque groups typically numbered around 44 monkeys and killed 3,000 rats per year on average.

That’s nearly 70 rats per monkey (or one every five days) over the course of a year.

CIA-armed militias are shooting at Pentagon-armed ones in Syria
Moved to P.2: War on Terror Background after Pancho Flerens6518 pointed out this article was published Mar 26, 2016.

[ChicagoTribune] Syrian militias armed by different parts of the U.S. war machine have begun to fight each other on the plains between the besieged city of Aleppo and the Turkish border, highlighting how little control U.S. intelligence officers and military planners have over the groups they have financed and trained in the bitter 5-year-old civil war.

The fighting has intensified over the past two months, as CIA-armed units and Pentagon-armed ones have repeatedly shot at each other as they have maneuvered through contested territory on the northern outskirts of Aleppo, U.S. officials and rebel leaders have confirmed.

In mid-February, a CIA-armed militia called Fursan al Haq, or Knights of Righteousness, was run out of the town of Marea, about 20 miles north of Aleppo, by Pentagon-backed Syrian Democratic Forces moving in from Kurdish-controlled areas to the east.

"Any faction that attacks us, regardless from where it gets its support, we will fight it," said Maj. Fares Bayoush, a leader of Fursan al Haq.

Rebel fighters described similar clashes in the town of Azaz, a key transit point for fighters and supplies between Aleppo and the Turkish border, and March 3 in the Aleppo neighborhood of Sheikh Maqsud.

President Barack Obama recently authorized a new Pentagon plan to train and arm Syrian rebel fighters, relaunching a program that was suspended in the fall after a string of embarrassing setbacks, which included recruits being ambushed and handing over much of their U.S.-issued ammunition and trucks to an al-Qaida affiliate.

Europe
The E.U.'s looking at a ‘carbon border tax.' What's a carbon border tax?
[WAPO] The incoming European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen, was elected on a promise to deliver a "European Green Deal." A key component of her agenda is a carbon border tax.

What exactly is a carbon border tax, and what are its consequences for the global fight against climate change? This is what you need to know.

So what is a carbon border tax?

Slowing global climate change will require reducing carbon emissions from a wide variety of sources. To do that, some countries have introduced carbon pricing plans to make carbon use more expensive and help the economy transition to zero carbon emissions. A carbon pricing plan could take the form of a standard tax on carbon emissions or a cap-and-trade system.

But not all countries want to tackle climate change at all ‐ let alone set prices on emitting carbon. A carbon border tax, also known as a border carbon adjustment, imposes a fee on any product imported from a country without a carbon pricing plan. Hypothetically, the tax would adjust the price of the imported goods to be equal to those produced at home.

PG&E is a company that was bankrupted by climate change. It won't be the last.

Carbon border taxes could reduce global carbon emissions in three ways

First, these tax adjustments could solve the problem of carbon leakage ‐ when carbon-intensive industries such as heavy manufacturing move to countries that don’t regulate carbon emissions.

Second, they might help countries that want to lead on climate policy use their market power against those that don’t. Some observers hope that such taxes would encourage more countries to participate in global climate agreements. It might also help enforce these agreements by raising the cost of shirking on a deal.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Sex Offenders Sue Georgia Sheriff for Placing 'No Trick-or-Treat' Signs on Their Property
[PJ] Looking to protect young children from convicted sex offenders, a Georgia sheriff had his deputies place signs on the lawns of sexual predators, warning children and parents not to trick-or-treat at the house.

Upset that they were exposed by the sheriff, several of the felons have filed a suit, saying that the signs violated their rights to free speech and privacy.

The names and addresses of local sex offenders are already listed on several internet sites in addition to being posted at the sheriff's office. It makes no sense that the perverts believe they have a right to privacy when anyone can access their information that's freely and easily available.

Fox News:
The initiative began in 2018 when Butts County Sheriff Gary Long directed deputies to place "Warning! No Trick-or-Treat at this address!!" signs in the front yards of over 200 sex offenders registered in the county from Oct. 24-Nov. 2. The sheriff’s office plans to use the same tactic again this year, and three registered sex offenders have filed suit.

In a Facebook post, Sheriff Gary Long said he had instituted the signs as a result of the cancellation of a local Halloween festival, "Halloween on the Square," and the subsequent influx of door-to-door trick-or-treaters. He said they had been following Georgia law and protecting children when they implemented the public warnings.

The lawyer for the sex offenders, Mark Yurachek, told Fox News, "The law allows the sheriff to put a list of registered sex offenders at his office, at the courthouse, on the internet. It does not allow him to go door-to-door telling people you have a sex offender living next door to you."

So, you admit it is a public record. Therefore, why are you trying to restrict the knowledge of the public record? When bad road conditions threaten the safety of your motorists, you should have a public record of situation, but also post warning signs at the locations.

#6  Yeah, anyone can look it up online. Most people don't. But the Sheriff putting signs on people's property can set the police up for some serious litigation. Especially if the offender gets hurt or killed by a vigilante. One unnecessary step too far, IMHO.
Posted by: DarthVader || 10/24/2019 10:08 Comments || Top||

#8  I think it was brave of the sheriff and completely righteous. Maybe he knew of the continuing danger of said predators living there and took this desperate step to safeguard children during the season.

A sex predator of any sort deserves no rights. It is blight on our civilized world that legal systems draw the line at incarceration, and do not explore the death penalty for such.

Ginsburg, 86, who has served 26 years on the Supreme Court and survived four bouts with cancer, was chosen from more than 500 nominees, later winnowed down to five. She is the fourth recipient of the prize and the third woman.

The organization said Ginsburg will direct the prize money to charitable or non-profit organizations of her choice.

"I am delighted the jury has chosen to honor such a prolific leader in the field of jurisprudence," said philanthropist Nicolas Berggruen, founder and chairman of the Berggruen Institute, which seeks to shape political, economic, and social institutions.

"Throughout her career, Ginsburg has used the law to advance ethical and philosophical principles of equality and human rights as basic tenets of the USA. Her contributions have shaped our way of life and way of thinking and have demonstrated to the world the importance of the rule of law in disabling discrimination."

Likewise if Ruth Ginsburg accept, she will have to resign immediately because her judgement would be suspected of being influenced by the Berggruen Prize for Philosophy & Culture people and as such would not be able to judge fairly.

China-Japan-Koreas
The N.B.A. and China and the Myths of Sports Diplomacy
[The New Yorker] In April, 1971, while practicing at the World Table Tennis Championship, in Nagoya, Japan, an American Ping-Pong player named Glenn Cowan needed a ride, and he boarded a bus carrying the Chinese team. Cowan, who was nineteen years old, had a mop of brown hair that fell to his shoulders and a toothy grin. Most of the Chinese players watched him warily; they had been warned not to talk to foreigners. But after a few minutes Zhuang Zedong, a former world champion, came to the front of the bus and presented him with a gift, a silk-screen portrait of Huangshan mountain, which Zhuang had been carrying in his bag. Cowan rummaged around in his, looking for a way to reciprocate, but he could only come up with a comb. The following day, Cowan presented Zhuang with a T-shirt emblazoned with a red, white, and blue peace sign and the words "Let It Be." Soon afterward, China invited the American team to visit the country, and they became the first delegation of Americans to do so since the communist takeover in 1949.

As a parable of the power of sports, the story is irresistible. And you don’t have to stop there: you can, if you like, draw a line from "Ping-Pong diplomacy" to Nixon’s visit to China; to Nike opening its first factory in mainland China, in 1981; to Yao Ming’s selection by the Houston Rockets as the No. 1 pick in the 2002 N.B.A. draft; to the enormous number of Chinese fans who reportedly streamed N.B.A. games and content in 2017‐18‐more than six hundred million, roughly twice as many people as live in the United States.

But the truth, of course, is more complicated. As Nicholas Griffin explains in "Ping-Pong Diplomacy: The Secret History Behind the Game That Changed the World," the encounter was not as spontaneous as it’s sometimes made out to be. China was consciously using Ping-Pong as a way to initiate contact with the U.S., and the U.S. had its own reasons for being receptive. (Though Cowan’s boarding of the bus may have been accidental, he later said, "I was invited actually to board the Chinese bus with the team, which shocked me, of course.") The two countries initiated several athlete exchanges over the next decade, with mixed success; though the Chinese adopted the slogan "Friendship first, competition second," tensions sometimes threatened to derail the visits. In a recent column in the Washington Post, Pete Millwood, a fellow in East Asian history at the London School of Economics, catalogued some of the more sensational anecdotes: rats thrown by protesters when the Chinese team visited the United States; a fistfight among the U.S. Track and Field team at a formal banquet in 1975, which appalled the hosts. "Americans will be Americans," a senior official travelling with the team said. He added, "The Chinese will have to learn that."

Both sides are still learning, clearly. In the two decades since Yao was drafted, the N.B.A. has become China’s most popular sports league, and the league has embraced the notion that it might facilitate a closer relationship between the two countries. "Sport has been used to bridge divides between cultures," Silver said after a meeting, last year, in Shanghai, with Yao, who is now head of the Chinese Basketball Association.

Joaquin Castro: GOP SCIF Walk-in ‘Absolutely' Was a Risk to National Security
[Breibart] On Wednesday’s broadcast of CNN’s "The Situation Room," Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-TX) discussed House Republicans forcing their way into the secured room where the House Intelligence Committee was conducting a deposition for their impeachment inquiry of President Donald Trump.

Castro said, "We were getting ready for the deposition to start and we had had a Democratic caucus meeting just before that of the Intelligence members. We came into the room. Everybody was seated, and just as the witness sat down you had ‐ of course, you had Democratic members already seated, Republicans that were seated. There are about 25 or 30 of the Republican members. It looked to me like it was all the guys. There may have been a few women but I didn’t see them. There are three entrances in that room and they all came kind of storming in. Most of them were not members of the committees, I think, of jurisdiction. They came storming in the room and started disrupting the proceeding. Shortly after that, I didn’t see when the witness left but she left at some point. I think her lawyers escorted her out of the room, but it was a very tense several minutes while everybody was in that room. Quite honestly, it looked like a mob scene. It looked like kind of a mob party coming into that room."

Blitzer asked, "Was it a risk to national security?"

National Security risk? No Wolf, but you certainly have been for several decades.

Military Leader of Syrian Kurds Thanks Trump for Cease-Fire
[Breitbart] General Mazloum Abdi, the pre-eminent military leader of the Syrian Kurds, thanked President Donald Trump on Wednesday for his efforts in stopping a Turkish offensive and negotiating a cease-fire.

General Mazloum, who leads the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), issued his statement shortly after the president announced the U.S. was lifting economic sanctions on Turkey in return for its commitment to a "permanent" cease-fire.

That commitment had been announced the day before, when Russia and Turkey agreed to joint patrols within 10 km of the Syria-Turkey border, and the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) agreed to withdraw 30 km south of the border.

Why Retired Military Officers Need To Shut Up About Politics
[The Federalist] Earlier this year, an active-duty naval officer stated, anonymously, "I keep my mouth shut when it comes to politics for one reason: that barber has to trust me [emphasis added]."

"Neptunius" was referring to the awkwardness of an instance where his barber attempted to engage him in a political discussion. As part of the ethos of military professionalism, servicemembers are forced to preserve a facade of non-partisanship to maintain the public’s trust in an institution committed to preserving and defending the entire nation.

Not all servicemembers, active or retired, appear to see it that way. Retired Admiral William McRaven, former Special Operations Command commander and Navy SEAL, best known for his involvement in the mission that killed Osama bin Laden, recently authored another op-ed critical of President Donald Trump.

McRaven has been a consistent, vociferous critic of the administration from the beginning, as previously reported. But even by his standards, has McRaven gone too far this time?

Here’s the big point McRaven seemed intent on getting across: "if this president doesn’t demonstrate the leadership that America needs, both domestically and abroad, then it is time for a new person in the Oval Office ‐ Republican, Democrat or independent ‐ the sooner, the better. The fate of our Republic depends upon it."

Let there be no mistake: McRaven is leveraging the uniform he once wore and the reputation he cultivated in the military to influence readers. Given the readership of The New York Times, this op-ed was clearly intended reach a wide audience, including potential voters. McRaven is intent on encouraging the public to turn against President Trump. It matters not that McRaven’s retired, because the public recognizes him not as a private citizen, but as an admiral and a decorated Navy SEAL, a perception McRaven is very likely aware of and embraces.

People Won’t Trust a Political Institution

Even during times of hyper-partisanship, the military remains the most-trusted institution in America by a wide margin. But trust can be undermined if the services are viewed as yet another partisan institution. As Duke University law professor and retired Air Force Deputy Judge Advocate General Charles Dunlap recently explained:

Illinois: Manufacturing Executives Charged with Knowingly Hiring Illegal Aliens
THIS is how you cut down on illegal immigration
[Breitbart] Four executives at an Illinois manufacturing plant have been charged with knowingly hiring illegal aliens, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency reveals.

According to ICE officials, four executives at the sheet metal KSO MetalFab Inc. manufacturing plant in Streamwood, Illinois ‐ a suburb of Chicago ‐ have been charged with one count each of knowingly harboring illegal aliens and one count each of knowingly hiring illegal aliens.

The four executives include 81-year-old Dora Kuzelka, 62-year-old Kenneth Kuzelka, 56-year-old Kari Kuzelka, and 58-year-old Keith Kuzelka. ICE officials allege that the Kuzelkas knowingly hired at least 18 illegal aliens.

In 2017, ICE audited the company and discovered that more than half of the 67 workers employed had potentially used fake work authorization documents to obtain jobs. After being warned of the illegal alien hires, the executives fired the workers.

Later, though, ICE officials said KSO MetalFab executives rehired at least 18 of the illegal alien hires that had previously been fired through a staffing agency.

ICE alleges that the four executives instructed the fired illegal aliens to apply for jobs through the staffing agency so they could be rehired at a later date. A number of the illegal aliens used the same names they had used to get jobs at the plant originally.

ICE announcement found here.

Chinese ship heads away from Vietnam after disputed surveys in South China Sea
HANOI (Reuters) - A Chinese oil survey vessel that has been embroiled in a tense standoff with Vietnamese vessels in the South China Sea left Vietnamese-controlled waters on Thursday after more than three months, marine data showed.

The Chinese vessel, the Haiyang Dizhi 8, was speeding away from Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone towards China on Thursday morning under the escort of at least two other Chinese ships, according to data from Marine Traffic, a website that tracks vessel movements.

China claims almost all the energy-rich waters of the South China Sea but neighbors Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam also have claims.

Tension between Hanoi and Beijing escalated when China sent the vessel to conduct seismic surveys in waters off Vietnam in early July.

The foreign ministry in Hanoi has repeatedly accused the vessel and its escorts of violating Vietnam’s sovereignty and has demanded that China remove its ships from the area.

The ministry did not respond immediately to a Reuters email seeking comment on Thursday.

Police broke up a brief protest in August outside the Chinese embassy in Hanoi over the survey vessel.

Chief Trump science adviser moves against foreign threat to research secrets
[Washington Examiner] President Trump’s chief science adviser says one of his top priorities is to protect America’s research institutions from foreign exploitation.

The policy follows a string of high-profile cases of government-funded scientists being fired by universities for failing to disclose ties with China.

The issue has provoked fears among scientists that the Trump administration is treating foreign researchers unfairly, but Kelvin Droegemeier, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, said the issue is one of integrity and scientific ethics.

Declaring sources of funding and professional relationships, he said, is a longstanding requirement.

"It doesn’t matter where you come from," he said. "The individual researcher has to behave with integrity. If they know the rules and they break the rules, I don’t want them in the research enterprise.

"They don’t belong there. It’s just as if they plagiarized a paper or they fabricated a result."

In May, Emory University in Georgia dismissed two Chinese American brain scientists who failed to disclose overseas funding and research ties in China.

At about the same time a former Energy Department scientist at the Los Alamos National Laboratory was charged with making false statements about his alleged involvement in a Chinese recruitment program. He pleaded not guilty.

New Report Reveals Climate Change Protesters Are Being Paid, May Be In Trouble Because Of It
[Red State] We’ve been bringing you some of the outrageous actions of the climate change gang, particularly Extinction Rebellion, the group that has been incredibly annoying to the general populace in London and who has flexed their ability to annoy in the United States as well.

In San Francisco, they linked hands and blocked traffic on both sides of the intersection at Gates Avenue near the University of San Francisco. Ironically, their actions were causing more carbon emissions while antagonizing commuters.

A gentleman in scrubs did not take kindly to them preventing him from getting to work. He let them know by ripping their banner out of their hands and tossing it over a fence.

Activists allegedly from the group got tossed out of a Long Beach, California In-N-Out Burger, screamed with bullhorns in the face of the poor employees and then found themselves in trouble with the police.

But now, the Daily Mail has dropped a big report on the group.

TX Governor Sending AG And Family Services To Review James Younger "Trans Kid" Case
h/t Red State
The stunningly tragic story of little James Younger has gripped the nation recently. You’ll recall that little seven year old James’ mother is trying to "transition" him into a girl. His father has been fighting for custody to prevent that. Unfortunately he lost the battle and a judge and jury inexplicably awarded full custody of James to the mother. This happened even after a witness was prepared to testify on James’ behalf that when he is away from his mother he is a happy, normal, healthy boy who does not wish to be made a girl. She was turned away from the courtroom and denied the opportunity a mere 30 minutes before she was set to defend James.

The jury still has to deliver a verdict on some other details of the case, so there is a small sliver of hope that they might put the brakes on some of the weirder stuff James’ mom is trying to do. However, after an uproar of confusion and anger over the verdict Texas Governor Greg Abbott has announced he will be sending in the Attorney-General and Protective Services to review this case.
Now, to me this is important - a lot more important than Kurds (who seem to have made new & successful arrangement with Assad [Russia]), or Ukraine (who, eventually, going to mend fences with Russia - because independent Ukraine is like independent Yorkshire). A society that cannot protect its own children should not impose its mores on the rest of the World. (Also, IMO, our [Israel] bandarlogs consistently imitate yours [USA]).

But there was never a reckoning with the evil left that backed the Communists in the West, either.

We've been living with the consequences of that fact at least since Clinton was elected.

We, Too, Can Be a Failed Latin American State
The left's enthusiasm for Third World immigrants isn't only because they vote 8-2 for the Democrats. It's that Latin American peasants seem uniquely amenable to idiotic socialist schemes.

You probably think it's beyond silliness for Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren to keep promising FREE HEALTH CARE FOR ALL! NO PREMIUMS! NO CO-PAYS! ILLEGAL ALIENS, TOO! EVERYBODY GETS A PONY!

No one could be gullible enough to fall for that.

I refer you to the economic powerhouse that is Latin America.

Based on hundreds of years of indigenous people voting for politicians who made similar promises, Latin America has become the dream factory that it is today. That's why Tegucigalpa is practically a byword for "technological innovation," Santiago was the picture of calm sophistication this weekend, and Caracas is the ultimate in modern conveniences.

The Grand Turk
VDH: Untenable Alliance Is No Turkish Delight
[Townhall] There are about 5,000 members of the U.S. military, mostly airmen, stationed at the huge, strategically located air base in Incirlik, Turkey, northwest of the Syrian border.

The American forces at Incirlik are also the custodians of about 50 B61 nuclear bombs. Data on these weapons is classified, but at their maximum yield each is 10 times more powerful than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima, according to Stars and Stripes.

It's a "Dr. Strangelove" scenario: No one quite knows how the American contingent could manage to secretly remove the deadly nukes from their concrete vaults, bring them out to the tarmac, load them on planes and fly them out safely over Turkish objections.

...Under Islamist strongman Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey has become NATO's only non-democratic nation. It's also NATO's only Muslim-majority member. Erdogan has been trying to re-create Turkey as a new Ottoman imperial power. He feels no allegiance to Western-style democracy.

...Turkey opposes, if not detests, almost every American ally in the region, and befriends almost every U.S. enemy.

...Turkey has frightened and alienated most NATO allies. The European Union has limited arms sales to Turkey. Germany has pulled its small forces out of the country. Recently, Turkish forces "accidentally" shelled a U.S. Special Forces peacekeeping outpost on the Turkish-Syrian border.

...Why, then, is the U.S. still an ally of this anti-American rogue nation? There are a number of scary reasons.

-- The U.S. military has not quite figured out how either to stay in or leave Incirlik in a now-hostile Turkey.

-- Washington knows that fighters at the valuable Incirlik base can reach any strategic conflict in the Middle East.

-- American diplomats naively hope that democracy will return to Turkey and that Erdogan is a temporary nuisance who does not reflect a rising Islamist constituency in the Turkish heartland.

-- America believes a bad ally is better than a bitter enemy. It fears that a hostile Turkey could start and win wars against our vulnerable regional friends and create a formidable nuclear alliance with Russia, China or Iran.

-- The West in general is blackmailed by Turkey, a gateway to the Middle East that has threatened to unleash a flood of millions of migrants onto European soil.

-- NATO in general is underfunded and undermanned. In contrast, NATO member Turkey has the second-largest military in the alliance at nearly 650,000 troops. Europe and the U.S. either believe such a force helps maintain credible NATO deterrence or are terrified it will be put into the service of others.

-- The U.S. fears that fighting against, or failing to aid, a NATO partner might unravel the entire alliance. Turkey has invoked Article IV of the treaty, requiring crisis consultation when a NATO ally claims it is threatened, three times in its regional disputes.

Not since the U.S. came to the aid of Joseph Stalin's USSR in World War II has America so disliked and so feared a valuable but utterly untenable ally.

#1  The West in general is blackmailed by Turkey...

Story of the west for a long time to come now, if something doesn't change Trump's mind. I think Bolton was right on this, apart from other things. Trump expects islamic states to behave as a corporation would, dance to the tune of economic realities imposed by trade and investment restrictions. These islamist entities are not however, affected by that. To them the hubris of Saracen glory and the Ottoman empire is more real than pecuniary concerns and state responsibilities to citizens. Their hatred of America and desire to see an America sized hole in world politics is a motivating factor in all of their policies. These are people who will evolve ramshackle economies independent of and unanswerable to the sanction-based punitive policies of the west. Look at Iran. It presses on.

Turkey should be sanctioned, kicked out of NATO, the nukes dismantled, their warheads flown out. If Erdogan 'doesn't allow' that, he's declaring war. War. Staying out of wars you didn't start must not be confused with being a ninny islamists can coerce into doing their bidding.

Being Turkey's ally now, especially under duress would be the ultimate ignominy and a victory for every islamist from Algiers to Zafarwal.

The Odd Conservative Love Affair With Tulsi Gabbard
It's Kurt Schlichter
I think I know what the deal is with all the gushing adoration Tulsi Gabbard has somehow managed to wrangle from ordinarily sensible conservatives. Think of a regular guy walking down the hall in high school, and the head cheerleader passes by and says, "Hi." The dude’s going to think she’s awesome. Of course, just because she is polite doesn’t mean Regular Joe is ever going to take her to the prom.

Tulsi gets Strange New Conservative Respect for several reasons, but the primary one is that she doesn’t seem to hate our guts. She is what an opponent should be ‐ an opponent, not an enemy. Let’s face it ‐ the mainstream Democrat Party hates our guts, and given its malignant druthers it would strip us of our First, Second, and probably Third Amendment rights in order to make sure that we never, ever have a say in our own governance again. Then, with us silenced and disarmed, it would take our money, corrupt our children and generally oppress us in ways that make today’s punitive straw bans look tame. If you don’t believe that a scary number of mainstream lefties want us Normals enslaved or dead, well, you’re either in denial or not on social media.

Make no mistake ‐ Tulsi is not one of us conservatives, though the kind of leftism she embraces (which owes a lot to the socialism of Bernie Sanders) shares some superficial similarities to the populism that has swept the GOP base. In many ways, we share her critique of an inept, corrupt ruling caste eager to send non-elite citizens off to fight their endless, mismanaged wars. We also share a critique of Big Business as a crony capitalist simulacrum of free enterprise, basically a bunch of rich jerks sidling up to the leaders of both parties to repeatedly shaft us regular folks to pump up a few digits on their balance sheets.

...The Gabbard Left and the Trump Right share the conclusion that our elite sucks and that it has forfeited any moral authority to lead our country, but the similarity ends there. She is not conservative and is not traditional. Just because she has doubts about offing babies in the third trimester, as opposed to supporting abortion until high school graduation, does not make her pro-life. She would take your guns, she would take your money, and she would generally make Barack Obama look like William F. Buckley.

Poor toilet hygiene, not food, spreads antibiotic-resistant E. coli superbugs

Antibiotic-resistant E. coli is more likely to be spread through poor toilet hygiene than undercooked chicken or other food, according to new research from a consortium including the University of East Anglia.
In Middle Ages they would routinely accuse Jews of poisoning wells because Jews got sick a lot less than Christians. Turned out, Jews - under religious obligation - would wash hand before eating. Later these habits of personal hygiene spread out. No more I guess - new Middle ages are here.

Militants lob grenade at CRPF camp in J&K’s Kulgam, Army jawan injured
[HindustanTimes] Pakistain had on Monday violated ceasefire in Qasba and Kirni sectors in Poonch. This followed cross border shelling on October 20 that left two Indian soldiers and a civilian dead

An Army jawan sustained minor injuries after faceless myrmidons lobbed a grenade at a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp in Jammu and Kashmir
...a disputed territory lying between India and Pakistain. After partition, the Paks grabbed half of it and call it Azad (Free) Kashmir. The remainder they refer to as "Indian Occupied Kashmir". They have fought four wars with India over it, the score currently 4-0 in New Delhi's favor. After 72 years of this nonsense, India cut the Gordian knot in 2019, removing the area's special status, breaking off Ladakh as a separate state, and allowing people from other areas to settle (or in the case of the Pandits, to resettle) there....
’s Kulgam, reported news agency ANI.

On Tuesday, at least three hard boyz were killed in Pulwama district during a shootout with the security forces, police said. Incriminating material including arms and ammunition was also recovered.

Pakistain had on Monday violated ceasefire in Qasba and Kirni sectors in Poonch. This followed cross border shelling on October 20 that left two Indian soldiers and a civilian dead prompting the Indian Army to launch a retaliatory attack on at least four terror camps and Pak military positions across the LoC.

Six Pak soldiers were killed and heavy terrorist casualties were also inflicted in the artillery attack.

Classes resume at NIT Srinagar, 80% students return
[HindustanTimes] NIT Srinagar was closed by the government ahead of the revocation of Article 370, that pertains to J&K’s special status, on August 5

National Institute of Technology (NIT), which reopened this week after almost two-and-a-half months, saw about 80% attendance.

NIT was closed by the government ahead of the revocation of Article 370, that pertains to J&K’s special status, on August 5.

NIT dean, academic affairs, Dr Kowsar Majeed, said, "Classes started this Monday, October 21. Almost 80% students, local as well as those from outside, have returned."

Around 800 students are enrolled in the NIT and half of them are from different parts of the country.

Dr Majeed said senior students belonging to the seventh semester, those doing PhDs and online courses, have still not returned owing to the blockade of internet services.

She said the institute was closed a couple of days after its autumn session began on August 1. "We have time-bound courses and winter is also coming. The spring session will start in March," she said.

Dr Majeed said, "There is a fixed academic calendar and there will be placements after that. There are industrial training exposure tours also lined up."

The authorities were thinking on cutting down on winter vacations. "This time we may hold classes till December," she said.

Europe
Norway police say no terror motive in ambulance rampage
[IsraelTimes] Norwegian authorities say that a man who allegedly stole an ambulance and ran down four pedestrians in Oslo appears to be a common criminal rather than a terrorist.

Yesterday, the 32-year-old man slightly injured the pedestrians, including seven-month-old twins, in what police called a "deliberate" act.

He was arrested a short time later and identified as someone who already had a criminal record, and who some Norwegian media said had links to far-right groups.

But "it looks now like a common criminal case that does not concern us," said Martin Bernsen, front man for the PST interior security service that handles anti-terrorist matters.

"At this point, we are not treating this as a terrorist matter," Bernsen told AFP, though he noted that the investigation was at an early stage.
Breitbart adds:
Inside the ambulance, police found an Uzi submachine gun, a shotgun and narcotics.

Another daily, Aftenposten, said the suspect had previously been convicted of a raft of crimes including robbery, illegal possession of drugs and arms.
What triggered this particular choice of acting out, then?

The suspect's lawyer, Øyvind Bergøy Pedersen, told the daily Verdens Gang that the man was just trying to escape from police and had not deliberately tried to injure onlookers.

The lawyer rejected reported links with far-right groups.

A 25-year-old woman who was with the man was arrested as well.

They had been involved in another accident, during which their vehicle overturned, police said. When emergency services arrived at the scene, the man stole the ambulance while the woman fled.

The incident took place in a residential neighbourhood in northern Oslo, and while trying to get away, the man hit a woman with a pram carrying the twins. They were taken to a hospital but did not suffer any severe injuries.

China may replace Carrie Lam as Hong Kong chief
[FOXNEWS] The Chinese government is reportedly drawing up a plan to replace Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam, whose leadership sparked the protests ravaging the global financial hub.

Sources "briefed on the deliberations" said Lam’s successor would be installed by March and serve the rest of her term until 2022, if Chinese President Xi Jinping decided to move forward with the plan. Lam was appointed for office in 2014 despite the fact her rival for the job, John Tsang, was far more popular with the general public, according to the Financial Times.

Turkish troops, Syrian rebels take over Kurdish town
[IsraelTimes] Ottoman Turkish media reports say Ottoman Turkish troops and allied Syrian rebels are securing a town in northeastern Syria after Syrian Kurdish fighters pulled out of the area.

The private DHA news agency says the Ottoman Turkish soldiers and Syrian rebels are using heavy machinery to fill in tunnels dug by the Kurdish fighters in Ras al Ayn. They were also disposing of traps or explosives left behind.

The private NTV television, meanwhile, showed a group of Syrian rebels standing on the roof of a building that was reportedly the Syrian Kurdish fighters’ headquarters, unfurling the Ottoman Turkish and Syrian opposition flags.

The move came after the US announced Syrian Kurdish fighters completed their pullout from Ras al Ayn and other areas The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

Albania says police thwarted attack plot by Iranian terror cell
[IsraelTimes] Authorities say Tehran-backed cell from IRGC’s elite Quds Force planned to attack Sufi opponents of the regime last year

Albanian police said Wednesday they had thwarted a planned attack by a Tehran-backed "terrorist cell" against opponents of the Tehran regime in the Balkan country last year.

In a statement, police said the group belonged to the elite Quds Force which runs foreign operations for the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

This cell "had planned, among other things, a terrorist act foiled in March 2018" targeting a religious celebration of the Bektashi, a Sufi group, in Tirana, the statement said.

The ceremony was attended by members of the exiled Iranian opposition group the People’s Mujahedeen of Iran

On Wednesday police published photos of three Iranians and one Ottoman Turkish national allegedly involved in the "terrorist cell."

The leader "resides in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

" and another "has an Austrian passport," according to the police statement.

Police declined to confirm whether international arrest warrants had been issued.

Authorities also did not say whether the incident had any connection to Tirana’s decision last year to expel two Iranian diplomats who the US accused of plotting "terrorist attacks" in the Balkan country.

In January the Europe

Ynet adds:

Pursued by NAB, JUI-F leader Akram Khan Durrani files pre-arrest bail plea
[DAWN] Former federal minister Akram Khan Durrani on Tuesday filed a petition before the Islamabad High Court (IHC) seeking pre-arrest bail in multiple inquiries initiated against him by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

Mr Durrani, a leader of the Jamaat Ulema-e-Islam
...the political wing of the Pak Taliban...
-Fazl (JUI-F), claims that he is being victimised for playing a key role in the Azadi March to be launched by his party on Oct 27 against the government of the Pakistain Tehrik-e-Insaf
...a political party in Pakistan. PTI was founded by former Pakistani cricket captain and philanthropist Imran Khan. The party's slogan is Justice, Humanity and Self Esteem, each of which is open to widely divergent interpretations....
(PTI).

In his petition the JUI-F leader stated that he is "being victimised and harassed by the respondents [the chairman, deputy director and investigation officer Nadeem Fraz of NAB] although he is cooperating with them and will continue to do so. However,
some people are alive only because it's illegal to kill them...
the pace at which all three inquiries are being carried out, his arrest before he could further garner support from other opposition parties for Azadi March is very likely."

Mr Durrani is facing inquiries for alleged corruption in two housing projects of the Federal Government Housing Foundation, appointment of blue-eyed officers in the Pakistain Housing Authority Foundation, allotment of ’out of turn’ plots for mosques and induction in the Pakistain Public Works Department (PWD).

The petitioner states that he "belongs to Jamaat Ulema-e-Islam-F which is to lead the Azadi March against the government from Oct 27" and a Rehbar Committee was formed for coordination and preparation of the protest.

"The petitioner has been playing an instrumental role in the Rehbar Committee and has in fact been representing his party at some of these meetings of the committee," the petition said, adding that the government "just to disturb political activities" is behind the inquiries.

The petitioner said that NAB "since its formation in 1999 has primarily been serving as a tool of political engineering and a way of silencing dissenting voices".

He expressed apprehensions that NAB may be used against the Azadi March’s organisers.

welcomed on Wednesday.

The world body's envoy for Yemen Martin Griffiths wrote on Twitter that the establishment of the four positions along frontlines in the key port city, and the deployment of liason officers, were positive moves.

"This step forward will enhance de-escalation in flashpoint areas and save lives," he wrote on Twitter.

The Saudi-backed government and the Iran-aligned Houthi rebels have been embroiled in a devastating conflict since 2014.

Last year, loyalists backed by a Saudi-led military coalition launched an offensive to retake the Red Sea port city, which serves as a crucial entry point for imports and humanitarian aid.

UN-brokered December talks between the warring parties in Sweden yielded a series of breakthroughs including a ceasefire in Hodeida, where combon the lamly ceased.

In May 2019, the UN announced that the rebels had withdrawn from Hodeida and two other nearby ports, the first practical step on the ground since the truce deal.

UN observation mission chief Abhijit Guha also welcomed the establishment of joint observation posts, "designed to facilitate direct inter-party de-escalation in flashpoint areas seen as susceptible to conflict", according to a UN statement.

A government official, who requested anonymity, told AFP the observation points had been working "smoothly".

Iraq
Iraqi defense minister gives US troops 4 weeks to leave Iraq
[NYPOST] US troops withdrawing from northeastern Syria to Iraq are "transiting" and will leave the country within four weeks, Iraq’s defense minister said Wednesday.

Najah al-Shammari made the remarks to the News Agency that Dare Not be Named following a meeting in Baghdad with visiting US Defense Secretary Mark Esper, who arrived as Iraqi leaders chafed over reports the US may want to increase the number of troops based in Iraq, at least temporarily.

Iraq’s military said Tuesday that American troops leaving northeastern Syria don’t have permission to stay in Iraq in a statement that appeared to contradict Esper, who has said all US troops leaving Syria would continue to conduct operations against the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. group from Iraq to prevent its resurgence in the region.

He later added that the troops would be there temporarily until they are able to go home, but no time period has been set.

Esper said earlier Wednesday that the US has no plans to leave those troops in Iraq "interminably" and that he plans to talk with Iraqi leaders about the matter.

It's kind of funny you say this. I know someone who's a Muslim by tribal affiliation more than anything else. The guy does not do the halal thing, never goes to mosque, is thoroughly Westernized by all outward appearances. And he's a big fan of action movies. But when I recommended Blackhawk Down, he was negative about it, saying that he wasn't thrilled to see Muslims getting killed by non-Muslims. So this was a thoroughly secular (and American) guy in most ways, brought up in America from infancy, and yet he cringed at the thought of watching a movie in which bad guy Muslims were being swept out of the way by good guy Americans in order to better feed multitudes of Muslim civilians.

This is why I say people who think the Saudi royals are behind Muslim extremists are full of crap. They're basically clinging on to power by their fingertips by giving their population a thin slice of what they want - theocracy-lite. If they are toppled by popular revolution, their successors will be al Qaeda/ISIS/Muslim Brotherhood or whatever random Islamist movement emerges on top after the inevitable post-revolution power struggles are complete.

#6  Muslims seem to have no compunctions about THEMSELVES killing other Muslims. Most of the victims of terrorism these days seem to be Muslims. Or course, the Muslims being killed aren't the right kind of Muslims- Sunni vs Shi'ite, or one of the other groups that consider anyone less pious than they are as not really Muslim.

That's because it's how power struggles have traditionally been settled, and not just in Islam, but in non-Western countries. Such clashes are on hold around most of the world mainly because of Pax Americana.

Sums up the Saudi tiger ride.

Islam is something the whole world has let continue to its own detriment. It's like letting some people carry an infectious disease because they claim a human right to. Now, it's too late.

We should have massacred it out of our cities, compressed them down to a minority huddled in caves and ghettos scrounging for sustenance until they died out or converted. A seemingly 'moderate' muslim also carries the seeds within him/her of being a poisonous facilitator of sheer inhumanity.

The Crusades were mounted at a time of technological parity. As such, the Crusaders were unable to make a dent in the ummah without incurring enormous losses. We are in a period of overwhelming Western technological superiority. What we lack is civilizational confidence.
Posted by: Zhang Fei || 10/24/2019 17:53 Comments || Top||

#12  Yes. You are absolutely right.

I believe we wouldn't have lost that confidence were it not for the corrupt churches and modern humanist philosophies that diluted common sense thinking. We lost wisdom in favour of 'theories of efficacy' brought by the Industrial revolutions.

And while the islamics are fast making up for the technology differential, the brutality they never lost.

I expect in the future we shall have to descend to the pit of brutality again with them. How much shall have been lost until that desperate day is the question.

#14  = the definition of decadence.

Rome fell as a result of a combo of technological parity with the barbarians on its borders and weakness brought about by repeated bonfires of its resources through endemic civil wars touched off by internal struggles for power. Whereas Western Europe was overrun by the Nazis because they lacked the civilizational confidence to match Germany's build up gun for gun and man for man. Fortunately, the ummah is nothing like Germany in terms of its technological prowess. If they are to overcome the House of War (i.e. non-Muslim countries), it will have to be by mass immigration, aided and abetted by the recipient countries themselves.

US still sees held Kashmir as disputed, Congress panel told
[DAWN] US Assistant Secretary of State Alice G. Wells informed a Congressional panel on Tuesday that India’s annexation of the occupied lands has not changed America’s position on held Kashmir
...a disputed territory lying between India and Pakistain. After partition, the Paks grabbed half of it and call it Azad (Free) Kashmir. The remainder they refer to as "Indian Occupied Kashmir". They have fought four wars with India over it, the score currently 4-0 in New Delhi's favor. After 72 years of this nonsense, India cut the Gordian knot in 2019, removing the area's special status, breaking off Ladakh as a separate state, and allowing people from other areas to settle (or in the case of the Pandits, to resettle) there....
, as it continues to consider it a disputed territory.

"We consider the Line of Control (LoC) a de facto line separating two parts of Kashmir," said Ms Wells. "We recognise de facto administrations on both sides of LoC."

She was responding to a question from the panel’s chairman, Congressman Brad Sherman who asked her if India’s Aug 5 decision to annex the occupied territories had also affected the US position on held Kashmir and if Washington now saw LoC as an international border. He also asked her if Washington still saw held Kashmir as a disputed territory.

"We do not take position on the type of administration either by India or Pakistain," said Ms Wells when Mr Sherman asked her if the US agreed with India’s decision to merge held Kashmir.

In a written statement she shared with the panel, Ms Well said that the security situation in India-held Kashmir remained tense and festivities between youth and security forces were a regular occurrence.

The first official US assessment of the situation in the occupied valley also emphasised the need for resuming India-Pakistain dialogue but claimed that Islamabad’s alleged support to some terrorist groups had stalled the talks.

California authorities seize enough fentanyl to make 4 million lethal doses
[NYPOST] A massive drug bust in Southern Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, led to the confiscation of 18 pounds of fentanyl ‐ enough to create 4 million lethal doses, authorities said.

The huge seizure amounted to half of the fentanyl snagged in Orange County this year, with Sherlocks nabbing about $1.25 million worth of the deadly opioid last Wednesday, the Orange County Register reported.

"The threat this extremely potent drug poses to our community is increasing exponentially, not subsiding," Orange County Sheriff Don Barnes said in a statement.

The sheriff’s office said they also seized a semi-automatic handgun, heroin, methamphetamine and $71,000 in cash.

Sheriff’s officials declined to reveal where the drugs were found but said the operation took place during the execution of a search warrant.

They arrested Rudolph Garcia, 60, on charges of drug possession, as well as being a felon in possession of a firearm. He is being held on $2 million bond, according to the report.

Afghanistan
Afghan rivals to meet in China after US talks stall
[DAWN] China is organising talks among Afghanistan's rival factions as part of efforts to end years of war after negotiations between the Taliban
...Arabic for students...
and the United States on the withdrawal of US forces broke down.

China, which shares a short border with Afghanistan, has been trying to encourage peace efforts and last month a Taliban delegation visited Beijing for talks with government officials.

"China has invited a delegation [...] to participate in the intra-Afghan dialogue," a Taliban front man, Suhail Shaheen, said in a post on Twitter late on Tuesday.

The so-called intra-Afghan dialogue is aimed at reconciliation between Afghanistan's warring parties and has been running parallel to the talks between the forces of Evil and the United States.

Last month, US President Donald Trump
...the Nailer of NAFTA...
halted the talks with the Taliban aimed at striking a deal for US and other foreign troops to withdraw in exchange for Taliban security guarantees, after the gunnies carried out a kaboom in Kabul that killed 12 people, including a US soldier.

The United States has been hoping that its deal with the Taliban would pave the way for a ceasefire and power-sharing talks between the Afghan government and the krazed killers.

The Taliban have refused to talk to the government, denouncing it a US puppet, but government officials have taken part in the intra-Afghan dialogue as private citizens.

Shaheen said the talks in China would be held on that basis.

"All participants will be attending the meeting in their personal capacity and they will share their personal opinions for solving the Afghan issue," he said.

He did not give a date for the talks and officials at China's embassy in Kabul were not available for comment.

The Afghan government was aware of China's plan to host talks but it could not comment at this stage, said deputy foreign minister, Idress Zaman.

Massive Syrian Army convoy heads to Al-Raqqa
[ALMASDARNEWS] A massive Syrian Arab Army (SAA) convoy was spotted heading towards the al-Raqqa Governorate this week as they fulfill their military cooperation agreement with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

According to reports, the Syrian Army convoy was heading towards the strategic city of al-Tabaqa and nearby town of ’Ayn ’Issa.

’Ayn ’Issa is an important town because of the military bases in the area and its location near the Ottoman Turkish Army’s front-lines in the Tal Abyad District.

The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) released a video on Wednesday that showed the Syrian Army convoy heading towards al-Tabaqa and ’Ayn ’Issa.

Trial date finalized for Charlie Hebdo, Hyper Cacher attacks
[IsraelTimes] 14 people to go on trial May 4 to July 10 for aiding forces of Evil in January 2015 attacks on satirical magazine, kosher supermarket in Gay Paree.

Fourteen people will go on trial in Gay Paree next May over the January 2015 attacks on the Charlie Hebdo
...A lefty French satirical magazine, home of what may well be the majority if the active testicles left in Europe...
newspaper and a kosher supermarket that heralded a wave of jihadist strikes on La Belle France, judicial sources said Wednesday.

The trial will take place from May 4 to July 10, lawyers and a judicial source told AFP.

Seventeen people were killed over three days in and around Gay Paree in January 2015 in the attacks.

Cherif Kouachi and his brother Said killed 12 people on January 7 at the Charlie Hebdo offices in Gay Paree, including some of La Belle France’s best known cartoonists.

Over the following two days, a third gunman, Amedy Coulibaly, rubbed out a young policewoman and killed four people at a kosher supermarket.

All three button men, who had claimed allegiance to jihadist groups, were killed by police.

The 14 accused are suspected of having provided logistical aid to the attackers.

The case will be heard by a special court seated, for logistical reasons, in a new, bigger building in the extreme northwest of Gay Paree and not the Palace of Justice in the center that would ordinarily have hosted it, the sources said.

Eleven of the suspects are in detention, but three are set to be tried in their absence.

They include Hayat Boumedienne, the partner of Coulibaly, who Ottoman Turkish authorities said at the time had crossed into Syria as her partner shot the policewoman.

Also on the run are brothers Mohammed and Mehdi Belhoucine, who also left for the Iraq-Syria region just before the attacks.

Unconfirmed reports have said all three could now be dead after fierce bombing campaigns in the area to defeat the jihadists there.

Responsibility for the attack against Charlie Hebdo was claimed by al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula
...the latest incarnation of various Qaeda and Qaeda-allied groups, including the now-defunct Aden-Abyan Islamic Army that boomed the USS Cole in 2000...
, an offshoot of the main al-Qaeda organization.

When it begins in April 2020, the trial of the 14 will be the first such major process against jihadists in La Belle France since the 2017 trial over the 2012 attacks by Mohammed Merah.

Merah killed three soldiers in March 2012 before gunning down a rabbi, two of the rabbi’s children, aged three and five, and an eight-year-old girl at a Jewish school in Toulouse
...lies on the banks of the River Garonne, half-way between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The Toulouse metropolitan area is the fourth-largest in La Belle France...
. A police sniper killed him during a siege at his home.

His brother Abdelkader was in April handed a 30-year jail term as an accomplice in the murders.

A wave of jihadist attacks on La Belle France that started with the Charlie Hebdo killings has claimed 255 lives so far, including 90 at the Bataclan concert hall as part of coordinated strikes on multiple Gay Paree targets on November 13, 2015.

Safdar sent to jail on judicial remand
[DAWN] A judicial magistrate on Tuesday denied physical remand of retired Capt Muhammad Safdar, husband of PML-N vice president Maryam Nawaz Sharif
...served two three non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf, then by the courts...
, to the police and sent him to jail on judicial remand in a case of alleged hate speech.

Islampura police presented Mr Safdar before the magistrate in the evening (after office hours) around 6pm while security was beefed up on the court premises since morning.

Mr Safdar was arrested late on Monday night when he was returning to Lahore through motorway from Bhera.

A deputy district prosecutor told the magistrate that the suspect was charged with inciting people against the government and state institutions. He said the suspect was arrested on a directive issued by Lahore deputy commissioner.

He said police needed 14-day physical remand of the suspect for investigation.

Advocate Farhad Ali Shah defended Mr Safdar and argued that the police acted with mala fide intention. He pointed out that the police initially lodged FIR under section 16 of the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) and later inserted sections 124 & 506 of the Pakistain Penal Code (PPC) in it as well.

Smartphone malware targeting Pakistani officials: report
[DAWN] A security firm says fake smartphone apps laden with malware are targeting Pakistain's military and government.
Golly. How dreadfully mortifying for them.
A report released on Wednesday by Canadian company Blackberry identifies new espionage campaigns attempting to steal sensitive data from mobile devices.

Blackberry says it doesn't know who is responsible for the campaigns but says it likely involves state-sponsored hacking groups.

The report says one of the fake apps promised news about Kashmir
...a disputed territory lying between India and Pakistain. After partition, the Paks grabbed half of it and call it Azad (Free) Kashmir. The remainder they refer to as "Indian Occupied Kashmir". They have fought four wars with India over it, the score currently 4-0 in New Delhi's favor. After 72 years of this nonsense, India cut the Gordian knot in 2019, removing the area's special status, breaking off Ladakh as a separate state, and allowing people from other areas to settle (or in the case of the Pandits, to resettle) there....
. India imposed a security lockdown in August on occupied Kashmir, detaining thousands and cutting off telecommunications for days.

Ecuador’s President Calls Nicolás Maduro an ‘Ass’ After ‘Stupid’ Insult
[BREITBART] Ecuadorian President Lenín Moreno called Venezuela
...a country in Central America that sits on an enormous pool of oil. Formerly the most prospereous country in the region, it became infested with Commies sniffing almost unlimited wealth. It turned out the wealth wasn't unlimited, the economy collapsed under the clownish Hugo Chavez, the murder rate exceeds places like Honduras and El Salvador, and a significant proportion of the populace as refugeed to Colombia and points south...
n dictator Nicolás Maduro an "ass" in remarks Monday during a meeting with Ecuador’s Confederation of Workers.
At least he didn't call him "Bitch". Massachusetts might've sanctioned him
The insult followed a rant by the Venezuelan supremo, who ceased being the country’s legal head of state in January, in which he called Moreno "stupid" and claimed the credit for enabling violent leftist agitators in Ecuador and Chile.

Riots erupted in Quito and Guayaquil, Ecuador, this month in response to Moreno announcing an end to a socialist gas subsidy that had been in place for decades, a provision agreed to as part of a deal to secure a loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). While the rioters identified themselves as members of unspecified indigenous groups, the Ecuadorian government revealed evidence that Maduro and former socialist Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa were paying foreigners to enter the country and commit acts of violence in its major cities.

At least seven Latin American countries issued statements in support of Moreno and condemning Maduro for encouraging violence in the wake of the riots. The riots died down when Moreno agreed to keep the gas subsidy in place for now. He has since been focusing on building closer ties to leftist groups and workers’ unions that he hopes will prevent future uproars.

Moreno was responding directly to remarks by Maduro henchman and U.S.-sanctioned drug lord Diosdado Cabello celebrating the riots when he referred to Maduro as an "ass."

"We are not shocked by Cabello’s joy, the joy of that ass governing Venezuela, Correa’s joy, it is definitely because they have their hands stuck in here," Moreno reportedly said in remarks published by the broadcaster Ecuavisa. "I have no doubt, under any circumstance, that for aggression, for hiring organized crime gangs asked to beat [people], to assault, to burn Quito, there was foreign money involved."

Iraq
Iraq to transfer around 2,000 convicted ISIS members from Mosul to Baghdad
[Rudaw] The Iraqi government has decided to transfer nearly 2,000 convicted Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS
...embracing their inner Islamic Brute...
) prisoners from djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
to Baghdad in a bid to cope with the overloaded internment facilities in Nineveh Province.

The transfer process is set to include the convicted ISIS felons held at the Tel Kaif detention facility including 1624 men, nine women and 118 teenagers under 18, Sherwan Dubardani, a Mosul representative MP in the Iraqi Parliament, told Rudaw English on Wednesday.

Asil al-Agha, a member of the Nineveh Provincial Council told KirkukNow that "the prisoners are due to be transferred to Abu Ghraib and Taji prisons in the capital, Baghdad."

The province of Nineveh is home to three detention facilities ‐ Tel Kaif, Faisaliya and Tasfirat ‐ that have the capacity to accommodate 2,500 inmates, but are currently housing nearly 4,500 detainees, according to a report by Human Rights Watch (HRW) published on August 5.

Dubardani said after a field visit to the center-turned-prison in Tel Kaif, he realized "how terrible the place was" and that it was "not suitable at all" for the convicted held there.

"There was also little security measures taken against the convicted," he added. "It was really dangerous."

The damage ISIS inflicted on Mosul is now preventing Iraqi forces from finding suitable facilities in which to house the prisoners.

"Mosul does not have a proper prison now after ISIS blew up Badush jail, which was the biggest and the most important reformatory facility ," Dubardani said, adding that Mosul authorities were "forced to hold them elsewhere."

He added among others held at the Tel Kaif facility are another 316 men, 142 women and 730 teens who have not yet been tried.

However,
we can't all be heroes. Somebody has to sit on the curb and applaud when they go by...
he explained that it has not yet been decided as to when the whole transfer process will finish.

"It is not an easy job. It is very complicated," he said. The decision has been made and it will take place," he explained.

Iraq's government has declined to provide figures on detention centers or prisoners, including how many are facing terrorism-related charges, although some sources estimate that 20,000 are being held for purported ISIS links.

In a report published March, HRW urged the Iraqi government to "ensure that detention before trial is the exception, not the rule, and only applied on an individual basis where it is necessary."

"The authorities should ensure that there is a clear legal basis for detentions, that all detainees have access to legal counsel, including during interrogation, and that detainees are moved to facilities accessible to government inspectors, independent monitors, relatives, and lawyers, with regular and unimpeded access", it added.

Photos of juvenile and women cells published by HRW show severe overcrowding. Conditions in Nineveh were said to be so bad that lawyers cannot meet with their clients inside, "because there is no space for meetings".

Libya's Coast Guard intercepts 150 illegal immigrants off the Libyan coast
[Libya Observer] The Libyan Coast Guard has intercepted 150 illegal immigrants colonists of Arab and African nationality off the Libyan coast.

"Three rubber boats, carrying about 148 migrants colonists, including 15 women and 11 children, were intercepted by the Libyan Coast Guard off Zuwara and Sabratha coast west of Tripoli

," Spokesman for the Libyan Coast Guard, Ayoub Qassem has said, confirming that the migrants colonists were returned to the gathering and departure centre in Tripoli.

Human rights groups oppose the return of illegal immigrants colonists to Tripoli because conditions in immigration centres do not meet international standards, according to them, while the EU countries are refusing to receive the migrants colonists.

Israeli military on high alert over potential Iranian attack from Syria
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Israeli military is preparing itself for a potential attack by the Iranian forces inside Syria, Israeli Army Radio said on Tuesday, as reported by I24 News.

Citing unnamed sources, Israeli Army Radio said the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) were preparing their air defenses for a potential cruise missile attack from the Iranian forces that are currently present inside Syria.

In particular, the report claimed Israel was focusing its defense capabilities on harder to detect, low-flying cruise missiles and dronezaps ‐ unlike high-arcing ballistic missiles that are easier to intercept.

Furthermore, they said this alleged Iranian missile threat is due to Israel’s attacks on their forces inside both Iraq and Syria.

Iran

The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan, the abbreviation IRGC is a cognate form of Stürmabteilung (or SA), the term Supreme Guide is a cognate form of either Shah or Führer or maybe both, and they hate Jews Zionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
has yet to retaliate for the string of attacks launched by the Israeli forces in Iraq’s Salaheddine Governorate and Syria’s Damascus and Deir Ezzor governorates.

However,
ars longa, vita brevis...
Hezbollah did retaliate against the IDF following an attack on their media center in the southern suburbs of Beirut in September.

Since then, the Israeli military has not been as active inside Syria and Iraq, prompting many to believe the Russian Armed Forces were playing a role in preventing these attacks.

Mass. Dem’s Bill Would Make It Illegal To Call Someone ‘Bitch’
[FREEBEACON] A Massachusetts Democrat is pushing a bill that would make it a crime to maliciously call someone a "bitch" within the commonwealth.
"Poopyhead" is still okay.
Foul-mouthed individuals who are found guilty under a bill introduced by Democratic representative Daniel J. Hunt would face a $150 maximum fine for the first offense, while repeat offenders would face up to six months' imprisonment, a $200 fine, or both. If enacted, "bitch" would be the only word in the English language to receive such special consideration in Massachusetts.
So "Dog Squat" is still good to go. "Cow," "sow," "jenny," "pussy," "hen," "vixen," "nanny," "pullet," and "doe" are still in committee. "Ewe" has problems, but they're working on them.
Hunt introduced "An Act regarding the use of offensive words" in May. The proposed law would specify that the use of the word "bitch" satisfied the "offensive and disorderly acts or language" requirement in existing disorderly conduct law.
Doesn't matter whether you holler it, squeal it, or whisper, it's still disorderly. If you think it, it depends on your expression.
"A person who uses the word ’bitch' directed at another person to accost, annoy, degrade or demean the other person shall be considered to be a disorderly person," the bill says. "A violation of this subsection may be reported by the person to whom the offensive language was directed at or by any witness to such incident."
What if the person's a guy? Zat still count? How about if she identifies as a guy?
Hunt told the Boston Herald that he filed the bill after being asked to do so by a constituent.
Falls under the heading of "never tell a constituent he's stoopid." It ain't a legislator's place to explain that something's abhorrent to the nation at large.
"Any time a constituent approaches me with something that is of concern to them, I follow through with it," he said. "In this instance, someone asked me to file a bill that they deemed was important and I thought it was a good exercise to let that bill go through the process."
Instead of telling the bitch to shut up?
While critics charge that the bill likely violates the First Amendment, Hunt told the Herald that even if it does, his bill could "illuminate the exhaustive legislative process for people that might not normally be engaged."
So it's just a demonstration instead of an assault on our increasingly beleaguered liberties? Oh, well. That's different.
The Massachusetts Republican Party mocked their counterparts for the bill. "Beacon Hill Democrats like [Dan Hunt] are fearlessly taking on the biggest problems facing the commonwealth," the state GOP said on Twitter, asking followers to attend the Judiciary Committee hearing if they "believe free speech matters."
Good for you, Taxachussets Publicans. Slap the silly bitches.

Russia demands US end its occupation of Al-Tanf in southern Syria
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday that Washington should end the occupation of the al-Tanf border crossing in Syria’s Homs governorate.

"US service members are stationed illegally in this area...blocking the road that connects Iraq and Syria. We demand an end to their occupation", Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin told journalists.

On Monday, Trump confirmed that only a small number of troops in the south will remain in the country after the troop pull-out in the northeast. Earlier, it was reported that his statement concerned the al-Tanf garrison at the junction of the borders of Syria, Jordan, and Iraq. According to media reports, the garrison consisted of 150 military personnel.

#4  I didn't know. And the spelling is a bit different.

What is Sukkot?

Sukkot (Feast of Booths or Tabernacles) is one of the three biblically based pilgrimage holidays known as the shalosh regalim It is an agricultural festival that originally was considered a thanksgiving for the fruit harvest. Sukkot are hut-like structures that the Jews lived in during the 40 years of travel through the wilderness after the exodus from Egypt. As a temporary dwelling, the sukkah also represents the fact that all existence is fragile, and therefore Sukkot is a time to appreciate the shelter of our homes and our bodies.

How is Sukkot celebrated?

Sukkot is celebrated by, first of all, building a sukkah. Jews are required to eat in the sukkah for eight days (seven days in Israel), and some even sleep in the sukkah for the duration of the holiday. The sukkah is decorated and the first day is considered a holy day in which most forms of work are forbidden. The rabbis dictated that arbat ha’minim (four species) should be held together and waved during the holiday. These are based on four plants mentioned in the Bible, and the rabbinic version includes the following: etrog (fruit of the citron tree), lulav (palm frond), hadas (leaves from the myrtle tree), and aravah (leaves from the willow tree). This waving ceremony was performed at the Temple in the ancient world.

The seventh day of Sukkot is called Hoshanah Rabah. On that day in the synagogue Jews circle the room seven times while the arbat ha’minim are held and special prayers are recited.

#7  I am still such a babe in the woods.

So long as you understand the details of your faith, JHH, you needn’t feel bad about knowing the less important details of someone else’s. I’ve been Jewish all my life, and never once put up a sukkah, though we’ve thoroughly enjoyed the ones we helped decorate at our synagogue and the local Jewish community center over the years.

The different spellings in the article and Bobby’s link result from the fact that the Chabad chassids who put up the one at the White House use old-fashioned Ashkenazi pronunciation and transliteration. Bobby’s link uses modern, Israeli Hebrew, which developed from the Sepharadi (Middle Eastern) pronunciation and transliteration.

3 civilians killed, 8 injured in new airstrikes by Haftar's warplanes
[Libya Observer] New Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
s by Khalifa Haftar
...Self-proclaimed Field Marshal, served in the Libyan army under Muammar Qadaffy, and took part in the coup that brought Qadaffy to power in 1969. He became a prisoner of war in Chad in 1987. While held prisoner, he and his fellow officers formed a group hoping to overthrow Qadaffy, so it's kind of hard to describe him as a Qadaffy holdover. He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. Haftar launched a campaign against the GNC and its Islamic fundamentalist allies. His campaign allowed elections to take place to replace the GNC, but then developed into a civil war. Guess you can't win them all...
's forces have targeted a civilian residential neighborhood in al-Asfah street in al-Ramla near Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
Airport Road in the Libyan capital, killing three civilians and injuring eight others, sources from the Health Ministry of the Presidential Council's government confirmed Wednesday.

The sources indicated that the injured civilians had been sent to a field hospital in al-Sawani area to get first aid medications before being sent to in-capital hospitals.

According to the sources, four of the injured persons were at death's door while the other four were somehow stable.

According to the media office of the Volcano of Rage Operation of the Presidential Council's government, the attack on the civilians was carried out by a UAE drone that was provided for Haftar's forces to bombard Tripoli.

This comes one day after Haftar's forces have targeted a residential building in Salah al-Deen in southern Tripoli, killing two sisters and injuring the rest of the family.

Haftar's forces have become more encouraged in their use of airpower on civilian targets over the last period with three deadly attacks taking the lives of several civilians, including seven children, in less than 30 days.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Trump and Syria: The Myth of Betrayal
A taste.
[Spectator] Conveniently forgotten is that Mr. Trump made his position on withdrawal clear almost two years ago.

Trump has betrayed the Syrian Kurds" ‐ so goes a popular refrain regarding the withdrawal of U.S. forces from the areas of northeast Syria held by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The events that have followed ‐ namely, a Ottoman Turkish invasion of parts of SDF territory along the border and the deployment of Syrian government forces in some SDF areas ‐ have been characterized as a strategic disaster for American interests, with some commentators even proclaiming the withdrawal as indicative of a U.S. imperial decline and U.S. disengagement from the Middle East.

In fact, much of this is overblown. For one thing, the U.S. still maintains extensive troop deployments elsewhere in the Middle East, and those are not being drawn down anytime soon. Insofar as many of the pundits, analysts, and policymakers condemning Trump consider the recent developments in Syria to be a disaster, they primarily have themselves to blame, however popular bashing Trump might be.

Indeed, these critics of Trump did not learn the relevant lessons from December 2018 when the president ordered preparations for a withdrawal of U.S. troops from Syria. They should have appreciated that Trump is ultimately the commander-in-chief of the U.S. armed forces and that he had made his own preferences on Syria clear: namely, that after the military defeat of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
, U.S. forces should leave. As the president’s record on issues like climate change and the Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
nuclear deal illustrates, he has generally been forthright and sincere in trying to fulfill his policy promises. When he told his advisers that he wanted to withdraw U.S. forces from Syria, he meant it. The message should have been clear: devise an orderly withdrawal plan.

But that is not what happened. Instead, efforts and attention were geared towards U.S. forces remaining indefinitely in Syria. The advocates for this "stay indefinitely" approach argued that the deployment as it existed was supposedly an example of a successful projection of U.S. leverage and influence with a relatively small number of troops. They claimed that U.S. presence was vital for political negotiations on Syria’s future and important for limiting Iranian influence and blocking its "land route" to the Mediterranean.

In reality, none of these assertions holds up but rather reflect dubious expansions of the original purpose of the U.S. mission in Syria: countering the Islamic State. At the same time, the "stay indefinitely" crowd tended to downplay the major problem regarding the U.S. partnership with the SDF: the issue of relations with The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...Qatar's satrapy in Asia Minor...
, which considers (with some justification) the SDF to be an extension of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which has fought the Ottoman Turkish state for decades.

Pudgy Transgender Activist Jessica Yaniv Loses ‘Brazilian Wax’ Lawsuit in Canada
[BREITBART] A Canadian official ruled against Jessica Yaniv, the transgender Canadian plaintiff who had accused three women of unfair "discrimination" when they declined to give his testicles a "Brazilian wax" treatment.

But the official minimized the damage to Canada’s pro-transgender laws by suggesting that women may need to provide the sexually intimate service to male bodies if they have been trained for the task.

"Human rights legislation does not require a service provider to wax a type of genitals they are not trained for and have not consented to wax. ... There are differences between waxing the genitals of a person with a vulva and a person with a penis and scrotum," said the deciding official in the quasi-judicial British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal.

The 61-page decision implies that women will have to provide the intimate service to men if the Canadian licensing boards require cosmeticians to learn how to do the service.

Hawley to Introduce Bill to Move Federal Agencies out of Washington D.C.
[NationalReview] Days after squaring off online against “elitist” critics of Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue’s relocation of agency jobs, Senator Josh Hawley (R., Mo.) will introduce legislation on Wednesday that would move the majority of the federal bureaucracy out of Washington D.C. to economically depressed areas, according to a summary of the bill provided to National Review.

The “Helping Infrastructure Restore the Economy (HIRE) Act,” which is cosponsored by Senator Marsha Blackburn (R., Tenn.), would move 90 percent of the positions within ten executive agencies to economically distressed regions that have a stake in the work of those respective agencies.
Not that a matching bill will be passed in the Democrat-controlled House, but it’s definitely useful as a talking point.

‘It’s not the police’s job to punish people’
[DAWN] "Don’t think of yourself as separate from the community. Community policing is community-oriented police," said former Sindh police chief Niaz Ahmed Siddiki on Tuesday.

He was speaking at a workshop on ’Community policing for responsive governance’ organised by Shehri-Citizens for a Better Environment (CBE) at a local hotel here.

Speaking about community policing, responsive governance and ethical police conduct, he said to the traffic police personnel that they could not just stand by doing nothing while watching an offence because that would make them an accomplice.

"You are not just regulating traffic; you are doing a national service. You are supporting people, saving important lives. Yes, it can be a thankless job. But if you are unhappy, leave. Not everyone can do what you do. Not everyone has your quality, your kind of training, your expertise. So don’t take this as any regular job and don’t take yourself for granted," he said to them.

Man briefly holes up inside French museum, writes threatening messages in Arabic
[IsraelTimes] Suspect detained after standoff at archaeology museum in Saint-Raphael; one of his messages said ’the museum is going to become a hell’

A man briefly holed up at a museum in southern La Belle France on Wednesday, where threatening messages in Arabic were written on the building’s walls, police said, before the suspect was detained and the four-hour standoff came to an end.

Police and a bomb disposal squad surrounded the archaeology museum in the Mediterranean town of Saint-Raphael, where the man had broke in overnight and refused to communicate with police, and officers were searching the site in case he had an accomplice, the top regional police official said.

One of the messages read "the museum is going to become a hell," a source said earlier.

In a Twitter message police had warned people to avoid the area in the historic center of the resort town tucked between Cannes and Saint-Tropez.

"The entire neighborhood is locked down... We’ve been ordered to stay in the restaurant," Sebastian, an employee at the Duplex restaurant opposite the museum, told the local Nice-Matin newspaper.

The museum, a historic monument, includes a medieval stone church and a vast collection of amphoras and other items from the region’s Roman history.

Government to allow JUI-F's 'Azadi March' to go ahead as long as it remains peaceful
[DAWN] The government on Wednesday decided to let the opposition's 'Azadi March' protest in Islamabad proceed as long as parameters laid out by courts for lawful protest are not breached.

The decision was made after a team delegated to negotiate with the opposition presented its recommendations to the prime minister.

It was decided during the meeting that "the Government, with its firm belief in upholding democratic ideals, would allow the proposed Azadi March, if it takes place within the ambit of law and the Constitution as interpreted in the decisions of the Supreme Court of Pakistain and Islamabad High Court," a brief statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office said.

"The prime minister believes in the democratic right to protest," a spokesperson for Prime Minister House had earlier told DawnNewsTV.

The protesters will be allowed to carry out the march as long as the everyday life of citizens is not adversely affected, in accordance with the past judgements of the Supreme Court and the high court.

The news broke amidst reports that the Islamabad police was issuing riot gear and mobilising containers to cordon off sensitive areas of the capital city to prevent protesters from marching on to the Red Zone.

[AceOfSpades] Dozens of Republicans, including some members of leadership, barged into the secure hearing room in the Capitol basement where Laura Cooper, the deputy assistant secretary of defense for Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia, was set to provide private testimony. GOP lawmakers have argued that other lawmakers, not just members of the three committees leading the probe, should be able to attend the closed-door hearings with witnesses.

Several lawmakers said that, in response to the Republican protest, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) had left the room with Cooper, postponing the interview indefinitely.

Prisoners in Khyber district to undergo weekly medical check-ups
[DAWN] All the prisoners at the three sub-jails of Jamrud, Bara and Landi Kotal in the Khyber tribal district would undergo weekly medical check-up while they won’t be subjected to any torture at the lockups, officials said here on Tuesday.

They said the prisoners would undergo medical check-up under the supervision of medical superintendent of the district headquarters hospital in Landi Kotal.

Officials said under the strict orders and instructions from both the district courts Khyber and officials of the ministry of Safron in Islamabad, no Khasadar or Levies personnel would be allowed to torture any prisoner inside their lock-ups.

The decision to bar Khasadar and Levies personnel from torturing prisoners was taken after a Khasadar arrested a shopkeeper in Landi Kotal a week ago and then kept him in illegal confinement in a local cell. He subjected the man to torture to force him to give statement in his favour that he (Khasadar) was not involved in extorting money from shopkeepers.
