Blacks Like Trump? Don't Blame Kanye
n what some have dubbed "Kanye Derangement Syndrome," we see the death throes of the divide-and-conquer identity politics that has long been the source of Democrat power and residual political success. Democrats' mantra was that black conservatives could not possibly exist in the natural world. They had to be some kind of genetically modified organism to which, when someone wandered off the plantation, they would apply that scientific term "Uncle Tom."

The problem for Democrats is that blacks are leaving their political plantation in increasing droves. In a bit of irony, they are pouring across ideologically open borders. Heeding candidate Trump's call of "what the hell do you have to lose," they have found they had nothing to lose by embracing the rising job opportunities, declining unemployment, and reduced crime those racist Republicans were offering compared to life in the gerrymandered inner-city Bantustans where liberal Democrats have held sway for decades.

Kanye West represents that increasing stampede, but he is a symptom, not the cause.

Arabia
Turkish Taffy
[AmericanThinker] It seems to me the disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi, last seen in Istanbul, is Erdogan-brand Turkish taffy, a confection of sugary lies made to inflame Americans against the Saudis and aid the far more dangerous to our well-being mullahs of Iran.
(a) Khashoggi was a Muslim Bro
...In the 1970s he joined the Muslim Brotherhood, which exists to rid the Islamic world of western influence. He was a political Islamist until the end, recently praising the Muslim Brotherhood in the Washington Post. He championed the ’moderate’ Islamist opposition in Syria, whose crimes against humanity are a matter of record. Khashoggi frequently sugarcoated his Islamist beliefs with constant references to freedom and democracy. But he never hid that he was in favour of a Muslim Brotherhood arc throughout the Middle East.
(b) The whole case stinks
...like Turkey’s case against the just released American hostage Pastor Andrew Brunson -- is an Erdogan confection of adulterated ingredients. The purported eyewitnesses seem to be liars who, like Khashoggi himself, have ties to the anti-U.S. Moslem Brotherhood and Iran.

...The Turkish police reports keep shifting as the story falls apart. On Twitter, Turkish academic and columnist Emre Uslu contends that in the 650 meters distance between the hotel (where the claimed assassins stayed) and the consulate there are seven security cameras, but for some reason, the police haven't shown any of that camera footage to prove that they actually went to the consulate.

...Not only are the sources of the Khashoggi tale suspect, but also the information they peddle is bizarre. First accounts were that the Turkish government had video and audio proof that Khashoggi was killed and dismembered in the consulate but wouldn’t release them because that would reveal where the cameras and recorders were hidden. Think: Surely if that were the case the Saudis would know from the claim itself where the cameras and recorders had been placed. Later accounts say Khashoggi recorded the proof on his Apple wristwatch synced to a phone outside the building. Whatever "proofs" of this bizarre tale the Turks and Iranian stooges are promoting, we haven’t seen it.

#1  The Turks and Saidi's have appointed a joint commission to investigate and bury.

If the US left wing wants to protest, let them go to the U.N. But little will stop them from the "Trump supports authoritarian regimes!" meme, coming soon to a media outlet near you.

#2  The whole story is just dumb. He could've just been offed during a "robbery" and it still would've suited the Saudis' purposes if killing the mook and sending a message was the point

The TrigglyPuff Party: How Democrats Created Insane ‘Social Justice' Mobs
h/t Instapundit

Warning there is a really scary video at the top of the link
Commenting on the irrational female rage unleashed by the Kavanaugh confirmation circus, Stephen Green remarks: "The Democrats have worked hard to lock down the Trigglypuff vote, but at what cost of even slightly more moderate voters?" But do such voters really exist?

We are more than 25 years into a cycle of increasing polarization that arguably began with Bill Clinton’s election as president. Clinton’s radicalism ‐ remember the so-called "assault weapons" ban? ‐ sparked a backlash that cost Democrats the control of the House that they’d held for 40 years. Everything thereafter increased the partisan divide: The budget standoff that led to the government shutdown, the Lewinsky scandal and the impeachment crisis, the Florida recount in 2000, the Iraq War, the recapture of Congress by Nancy Pelosi’s Democrats, Obama’s election in 2008, the Tea Party movement, on and on.

It is not the case that America’s politics have become more divisive because the Republican Party has moved further right. Liberal pundits, commenting from within their ideological cocoons, habitually apply labels ‐ "far right," "extremist," "white nationalist," etc. ‐ to depict the GOP as beholden to a dangerous fringe, but this is just paranoid propaganda. The typical Republican voter in 2018 is actually no more "extreme" than his father was in 1988. Nor is the policy agenda of the GOP now any more "far right" than it was in the presidency of Ronald Reagan. The cause of the increased partisan divide is not that the Republicans have moved right, but that Democrats have moved left.

What happened, when did it happen and why did it happen?

Of Course The Liberal Mob Is Real
[Townhall] There are few things that get liberals riled up like exposing them for exactly who and what they are. They hate it, almost as much as they hate people who don’t fall in lockstep with their every demand. So when President Trump started talking about the "mob" liberals have become, "journalists" leapt to their defense, naturally. But there is no defense from the truth; no matter how earnestly a CNN or MSNBC personality insists the Sun rises in the west, that doesn’t make it so. The Democratic Party is the party of the mob.

...The spirit of the mob in inherent in the left, what they want requires something from others ‐ either their money or obedience, and often times both. But the realities of life tended to keep this instinct in check outside the ballot box. Then millennials entered the scene.

A generation raised on unearned self-esteem has spent their college years destroying the governor that most people solidify in childhood controlling their worst impulses. Temper tantrums in the quad and shouting down speakers who might say something they don’t like were rewarded with success for four years, it’s only natural they’d maintain that mentality in adulthood. Add in funding ‐ both in salaries and bail money ‐ and you have an army of social justice warriors with an inflated sense of entitlement and a willingness to shoulder aside accepted norms.

...Expect the mob to continue to rage, well-funded and emboldened by the passive encouragement from their leaders. But a word of warning, if you are vocal with your politics you should keep your head on a swivel. Any child lacking discipline will inevitably test boundaries and cross lines, but a child is one person and will eventually tire. A mob feeds off itself, off its members, and people in a group will go much further than any of them would alone. In other words, no matter how insistent the likes of Don Lemon Brooke Baldwin are that they don’t exist, the mob is here for the foreseeable future. And it’s only going to get worse.

Save the Democrats: Crush Them at the Polls
h/t Instapundit
The screams from the U.S. Senate gallery during the ayes and noes on Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation were the Democratic party’s cries for help. Voters should arrange the major intervention that Democrats sorely need, so they might regain their mental health.

What should have been a solemn occasion last Saturday afternoon ‐ the then-nominee’s supporters and opponents quietly and gracefully waiting to see if he had enough votes to reach the nation’s highest court ‐ instead sounded like chilling shrieks from a psychiatric hospital.
If it were only the protesters and not prominent Democrats
..."You cannot be civil with a political party that wants to destroy what you stand for," Hillary Clinton told CNN Tuesday. "That’s why I believe, if we are fortunate enough to win back the House and or the Senate, that’s when civility can start again. But until then, the only thing that the Republicans seem to recognize and respect is strength."

...President Trump surveyed these dangers and told voters in Council Bluffs, Iowa, Tuesday: "You don’t hand matches to an arsonist, and you don’t give power to an angry left-wing mob. And that’s what the Democrats are becoming."

...Only a massive, crushing defeat on November 6 finally might make the Left heel.

If Democrats win either house, they will go berserk. Impeachment of President Trump, Kavanaugh, and even Vice President Pence (as some leftists demand) will top their To Do list. Medicare for All, scrapping ICE, and Democratic Socialism soon will follow.

To these leftist words, Antifa will add the music of mob rule: riots, property destruction, physical intimidation, street violence, death threats, and possibly even more severe mayhem ‐ all in the name of Resistance.

If Democrats barely lose (say, the GOP keeps a three-seat House majority), they will blame Russia, voter suppression, patriarchy, white-nationalist lead poisoning, global warming, sexism, Islamophobia, homophobia, high gas prices, income inequality, and racism, racism, racism.

However, if Republicans romp, boost their Senate majority by three to eight seats (ideally securing a filibuster-proof, 60-seat majority) and score an additional dozen-plus House districts, vanquished Democrats might cry together on November 7 and conclude:

"We blew it.

Women lied, black men died
h/t Instapundit
[TheNewNeo] The Democrats thought Brett Kavanaugh was a safe target. Accusing a white prepster named "Brett" would be a great way to achieve several goals: stopping him from changing the balance of SCOTUS in favor of conservatives, and showing solidarity with women and with #MeToo. Who on earth would identify with Kavanaugh except other white preppy guys on the right, and they weren’t going to vote for Democrats anyway, so no great loss.

Well, it turns out that some women are concerned about the men in their lives, too. False accusations can ruin nearly anyone (women included, although I’m not sure how many women consider that aspect).

However, another obvious group that might look at the Kavanaugh hearings and become concerned about what was happening to him is black men. If that sounds counter-intuitive to some people, it certainly doesn’t sound counter-intuitive to me. It occurred to me, while watching the proceedings, that black men might not take too kindly to this little exercise in Believing Women No Matter What.

...Why didn’t it occur to Democrats that their approach to Kavanaugh might bother black men as well as white ones? My theory is that Democrats now think so completely along racial lines that it probably wouldn’t occur to them that a black man could identify with something happening to a white man, and a preppy white man at that.

Turkey okays release of more water supplies to Iraq
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) ‐ Ottoman Turkish President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey...
agreed to increase releases of water to Iraq to help it overcome a water crisis, Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament Mohammed al-Halbousi said.

Halbousi made the remarks following a meeting with Erdogan in the Ottoman Turkish capital Ankara.

The Ottoman Turkish president agreed to increase water releases to Iraq "to guarantee the delivery of water to all Iraqi provinces, particularly in Basra," the Iraqi Basnews website quoted Halbousi as saying in a statement.

"The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
further stressed its commitment to supporting Iraq in the (water) file," the statement read.

Halbousi arrived in Turkey Monday to take part in the third meeting of Eurasian parliament speakers.

Turkey is holding back water on the Tigris river to fill a reservoir behind its Ilisu dam, a step that has alarmed Iraq and caused shortages particularly in the southern province of Basra.

Iraq’s water shortages have led it to take measures such as bans on rice planting, and driven farmers to leave their land. Basra province has seen months of street protests over the lack of clean drinking water.

#6  An aside; I hope Germany is paying attention. While I agree with Israel and support them, it reminds me of the power Russia will have over Germany.

Via Business Insider; Trump's attacks on Germany focused on two major issues: defense spending and spending on energy imports from Russia.Germany being totally controlled by Russia because they're getting between 60 to 70% of their energy from Russia and building the Nord Stream 2, a new pipeline from the Baltic Sea to Europe that is likely to boost Russia's natural-gas exports. Given Germany's commitment to reducing the use of coal and nuclear energy, the pipeline is seen as a key source of new energy in the coming years. The growing consumption of Russian oil and gas comes at the same time Germany and its allies are confronting Russia over numerous issues, including Russia's invasion of Crimea and election interference around the world.

Israeli police investigating Palestinian woman's death in car
[Al Ahram] Israeli police said on Saturday they were investigating the death of a Paleostinian woman in the occupied West Bank, after her husband said he suspected Israeli settlers had pelted their car with rocks.

Rooters was unable to independently verify the circumstances of the incident but footage of the car, which a Rooters cameraman said bore Paleostinian licence plates, showed what appeared to be a blood-stained broken brick at the foot of the passenger seat, which was covered in shattered glass and blood stains.

A source at the Nablus hospital where Aisha al-Rawbi was brought said the 47-year-old was dead on arrival and that she had suffered a head injury. Her relatives said an autopsy was to be carried out at another hospital.

The woman's husband, Aykube al-Rawbi, 52, said he was driving by a settlement late on Friday after dark along a main road near the Paleostinian city of Nablus and that he could not clearly see who pelted the car.

"The stones came from the side where the settlement is. I could hear the people speak Hebrew, but I didn't see them," said al-Rawbi.

Israeli Police Spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said: "Police arrived in the area and have opened an investigation into the circumstances behind the incident reported."

The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) said the joint operation in south-central Somalia region has so far clear 16 improvised bombs (IEDs) and is also aimed at improving freedom of movement.

"The forces are opening the main supply routes connecting Beletweyne and Jalalaqsi to facilitate safe and timely humanitarian assistance delivery," it said.

The UN has warned that a blockage of supply routes will spark a rise in prices and reduction of basic commodities in recovered towns that could further worsen food security in the affected districts.

The joint forces are reportedly taking main towns and moving along the main roads, but al-Shabaab has in some cases maintained control of supply routes, hindering the delivery of humanitarian and commercial supplies to affected people.

Four coppers riding two motorbikes will perform their duty for eight hours in designated areas. Mostly newly recruited coppers have been deployed for this purpose.

District SSPs will head the street watch force in their respective areas, the AIG said.

The top judge had taken notice of an incident on Oct 7, in which a group of 15 lawyers led by advocates Saif Khokhar, Nabeel Haider and Mustafa Khokhar had attacked ASI Samar Riaz Khan in a district and sessions court where Khan had gone to submit records.

During a hearing of the case in the Supreme Court's Lahore registry on Saturday, the court also rejected a request to prevent the arrest of the accused lawyers until a decision was made in the case.

"I will give my resignation but I will not be unjust," he said.

He also ordered a copy of the video of the lawyers assaulting the sub-inspector, which, he said, would be displayed in the next hearing of the case to determine who was responsible.

A large number of lawyers, including President of the Lahore Bar Association Malik Arshad and Secretary Sohail Murshad, were present in court on Saturday.

Malaysia's Anwar returns to frontline politics in big poll win
[PULSE.NG] Anwar Ibrahim won an overwhelming mandate in a parliamentary by-election Saturday, officials said, setting the stage for his return to frontline Malaysian politics and sealing the once-tossed in the clink
Into the paddy wagon wit' yez!
opposition figure's remarkable resurrection.

Figures released by the Election Commission showed he got more than 71 percent of the total votes cast in a seven-way contest which included a former aide who lodged the sodomy charges that landed Anwar in prison for a second time in 2014.

"I am happy with the results. Allah bless us all," Anwar said after the victory, which marks the charismatic politician's stunning political comeback from prison to parliament.

Winning the seat was a key requirement for Anwar to succeed 93-year-old Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, who tossed in the clink
Into the paddy wagon wit' yez!
his former protege and heir apparent on sodomy and corruption charges in 1998 when their relationship soured.

Mahathir returned to the premiership this year after a shock election win, saying he would stay in power for only two years before handing the reins to Anwar.

Anwar was in prison when he forged an unlikely alliance with Mahathir in a bid to unseat then-prime minister Najib Razak, who had called elections for May amid massive corruption allegations.

Underscoring the drama of Saturday's vote, one of Anwar's six challengers is the ex-aide who had accused him of sodomy, still illegal in the largely Moslem country.

Polls opened under cloudy skies at 8:00 am (0000 GMT) and closed nine and a half hours later in the sleepy southern coastal town of Port Dickson, home to a sizeable ethnic Chinese community that has traditionally been one of Anwar's pillars of support.

US charity school in Liberia in rape scandal storm
[PULSE.NG] An acclaimed US charity operating in Liberia has admitted to major failings after girls at a school set up to save them from a life of sexual exploitation were systematically raped.

"We are profoundly, deeply sorry," the charity More Than Me said on its website on Saturday after US investigative media said girls at a pioneering school in a slum had been repeatedly abused by the charity's co-founder, Macintosh Johnson.

Some victims were as young as 10 and there are fears he infected some with the AIDS virus, of which he eventually died, the investigative site ProPublica said in a piece co-published with Time.

"To all the girls who were raped by Macintosh Johnson in 2014 and before: we failed you," More Than Me said.

"We gave Johnson power that he exploited to abuse children. Those power dynamics broke staff ability to report the abuse to our leadership immediately.

"Our leadership should have recognised the signs earlier and we have and will continue to employ training and awareness programmes so we do not miss this again."

The assaults took place at a school at West Point, a notorious slum in the capital Monrovia.

It opened in 2013 to a blaze of publicity, becoming the first of 18 schools that More Than Me opened in the impoverished West African state to empower girls.

The charity eventually raised more than $8 million in funding, nearly $600,000 of which came from the US government, and gained the support of Liberia's then president and Nobel Peace Laureate, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

ProPublica described Johnson as a "charming hustler" who insinuated himself with Katie Meyler, who created the charity.

Meyler, an evangelical Christian, had come to Liberia to try to help the country after its emergence from 14 years of civil war.

She threw herself into the task of helping girls in the slums.

Back in the US, she rubbed shoulders with philanthropist Warren Buffett, TV star and activist Oprah Winfrey and other celebrities in her campaign to drum up donations.

After some of the girls came forward to reveal what was happening, Johnson was suspended by the school and locked away
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
He was put on trial in 2015, but this ended in a hung jury amid suggestions of bribes, ProPublica said. He was facing a retrial when he died in 2016 from an illness that the site said was AIDS.

In its statement, More Than Me said it had been "naive to believe that providing education alone is enough to protect these girls from the abuses they may face -? strong institutions, safeguarding policies and vigilance are needed to do that."

Among the changes it had introduced, the charity maintained, was the providing of "private, school-wide HIV testing" to all students.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
New Syria law expands state regulation of religious affairs
[PULSE.NG] Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Terror of Aleppo ...
has signed into law a new bill expanding the powers of a government ministry overseeing religious affairs and limiting the term of the country's top Moslem holy man.

The draft, which state media reported Assad had signed into law Friday, had been amended by parliament this month after sparking controversy among Syrians at home and abroad.

The new legislation grants additional powers to the ministry of religious endowments, or "waqf", which already oversees Islamic affairs in Syria.

Specifically, the waqf minister will have a role in naming the next mufti.

The mufti had previously been appointed by the president, as was the case with current mufti Ahmed Badreddin Hassoun, appointed by Assad in 2004.

The new law also sets the mufti's term, previously unlimited, at a renewable period of three years.

The waqf minister will now oversee religious schools, head the Council on Islamic Jurisprudence, and regulate religious programming on media outlets.

The new law also stipulates that Moslem imams are not allowed to travel outside of Syria or attend any conference even inside the country without the waqf minister's permission.

It forbids preachers and religious instructors from "stoking sectarian strife" or "taking advantage of religious platforms for political purposes."

Syria's pre-war population was overwhelmingly Sunni Moslem, with smaller numbers of Shiite Moslems and Alawites, the sect from which Assad's family hails.

Christian and Druze minority communities are also scattered across the country. It appears that non-Moslem communities are not affected by the new law.

The legislation had sparked controversy this month, with many saying it was state overreach into religious affairs.

Others said it was a way to regulate religious discourse in order to "fight extremism."

In a recent television interview, current waqf minister Mohammad Abdulsattar al-Sayyed described it as a "huge achievement".

"This is the first time there's a law that issues controls and standards for religious work and conditions for appointing imams and preachers," he said.

Is this the man that can finally unify Libya?
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Libya has effectively been a failed state mired in an intractable civil war since the Libyan people have risen up against Muammar Qadaffy
...who single-handedly turned a moderately prosperous kingdom into a dictator's fantasyland and was then murdered by his indignant subjects 42 years later...
in 2011. Whatever else we may wish to say about Qadaffy, he was a unifying force in a country deeply fractured along ethnic, tribal and ideological lines. A brutal and malign unifying force, but a unifying force nonetheless.

The more one delves into the detail of the ongoing conflict in the country, the easier it is to lose hope that a stable and prosperous Libya might be possible at all. There are multiple power centers distributed all over the country, each with their own private militias, there are imported muscle associated with ISIS and al-Qaeda still roaming the land, despite years of Western-backed efforts to stamp them out, there are at least two separate, semi-viable state apparatuses running in parallel and claiming authority over the entire territory, complete with their own central banks and currency ‐ and, of course, there is international proxy power play, with Russia and the West backing different sides, while Arab states back different proxies on the ground. None of this suggests that anything other than endless conflict is possible.

TLP threatens to paralyse country if Aasia Bibi is acquitted
[DAWN] The Tehrik-e-Labbaik Pakistain (TLP) has warned of paralysing the country within hours if the Supreme Court sets Aasia Bibi, a Christian woman sentenced to death for blasphemy, free. The TLP directed its local leaders across the country on Friday to start holding sit-ins within hours without waiting for a decision by the central leadership, if she is freed.

"Judges’ remarks have sown doubt among the party leaders and fears that she would be released soon," Pir Afzal Qadri, patron-in-chief of the TLP, said while addressing a rally taken out to protest the possible acquittal of Aasia Bibi.

Reading out a four-point resolution approved by the party leadership, he said the possible acquittal would be deemed an attack on Islam, the Constitution and blasphemy law. Responsibility for the subsequent law and order situation would rest with the judges, the government and all institutions supposed to protect the Constitution, he warned.

"The central leadership has already decided about a countrywide protest and local leaders should not wait for any message from the central leadership and start their sit-ins immediately," Mr Qadri said, adding that these "nationwide sit-ins should continue till all those responsible for [Aasia Bibi’s] release are punished, even if the central leadership is incarcerated or killed".

A number of TLP workers gathered on The Mall in Lahore and other major cities in the country, including Bloody Karachi

Yemen’s army kills eight Houthi field commanders on West coast front
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The Yemeni national army announced the killing of eight senior Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
militia field commanders on the Western coastal front, with the armed forces engaging the militia.

Military sources said the eight leaders were prominent military commanders of the pro-Iranian militias who were killed in the West Coast of Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
during intense fighting, adding that the Houthi militias acknowledged their recent killing though at the beginning it kept silent about their fate.

The militia leaders killed were military, security, and field commanders, as well as tribal sheikhs loyal to the coup group and a large number of their escorts.

The Yemeni official statement pointed out that in a raid by coalition fighters south of Hodeidah, one of the most important leaders of the Houthi militia, Hisham Abdel-Samad al-Khalid, the first official for the strength of the cordon of the city of Hodeidah, was killed. He was the leader of the largest gangs of the coup, and one of the most prominent Houthi leaders in the military police.

Among others killed were one of the most prominent leaders of the Houthi leadership, Muhammad Ali Mahdi al-Hassani, the official of the mobilization in the town of Khamis Bani Saad in the province of al-Mahweet, and the prominent field supervisor, Salah Ali Salah Faie, who is descended from Dahyan in Saada, the origin of the Houthi militia.

Also killed was the security leader, called "AbuFadl", or Issam Mohammed Saad Mahdi, who was one of the companions of the so-called former political council head Saleh al-Samad, who himself was killed earlier this year in an Arclight airstrike.

The military sources said that the field commander Mohammed al-Abbasi, leader Mohammed al-Suhaili, Abdul Majid al-Hamzi, Ali al-Hazaari, and the "Abu Zaid al-Hammadi" and the "Aburqia" Ali Abdulrahman Saad al-Din were killed in specific operations by the Yemeni forces engaging in direct confrontations, along with targeted artillery fire and aerial bombardment by coalition forces.

On Friday, the Yemeni army backed by the Arab coalition, said it continued advancing in several districts of the governorate of Saada, taking control of new posts which were under the control of the Houthi militias, particularly in the districts of Zaher, Baqim and Kataf.

Here We Go Again - NYT Hit Piece On Jared Kushner's 'Tax Returns' - Another Fisking
Got the ol' Robert Fisk pic going this time, Besoeker!

This is similar to the NYT 'story' on Trump's 'tax returns' that I fisked into a bloody pulp last Wednesday. In order to avoid redundancies, I will largely ignore the NYT's examples of slanted / misleading language ('loopholes', significant depreciation, etc., that y'all can spot by now) and focus on a few things where it differs from last week's story the Times tried to pass off as some grand revelation.

[Zero Hedge] - Less than two weeks after the NYT released what a massive 12,000 words "bombshell" report on the "fraudulent" tax dealings of Trump's father, and which promptly got swept away by the non-stop news cycle, on Saturday the NYT has come back with part two, this time dissecting the the tax records of Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, highlighting that he paid almost no federal income taxes in several recent years despite a net worth that soared to $324 million in 2016 from $106 million in 2011, and billions of dollars spent building his real estate empire.

Citing the leaked tax documents it obtained, or as it called them, "confidential financial records", the Times reported that Kushner, a real estate investor and senior White House adviser, for years minimized his tax bills by booking heavy losses on reported depreciation of his real estate holdings that overwhelmed his reported income. And since this is an all too often used loophole of the US tax code, the Times noted that nothing in the documents indicate that Kushner or his company broke the law.
But we're gonna run with the story anyway...
The records, which were given to the NYT by "a person who has had financial dealings with Kushner and his family", describe Kushner’s business dealings and finances from 2009 to 2016. They were drafted with Kushner’s help as part of a review of his finances by potential lenders and contain information from his federal tax filings in addition to other data provided by advisers, according to the report. Reviewed by "more than a dozen tax accountants and lawyers" the records indicate that Kushner paid little or no federal income taxes in five of the last eight years.
Behold: presentation-wise, the saddest looking balance sheet I've ever seen. This tell me that it's for internal use; otherwise you'd see something much more professional looking and with GAAP-adherent terminology and classifications (current assets, long-term / fixed assets, current liabilities, current portion of long-term debt / liabilities, long-term liabilities, etc.). That tells me the financial information wasn't leaked by someone at the lenders who financed his main building, 666 Fifth Avenue when he bought it in 2007 (UBS and / or Barclays), which is linked to below. The lenders would be getting audited financial statements, not that piece of shit balance sheet in the ZH article. You could also eliminate the brokers in this deal - generally speaking they wouldn't be reviewing Jared's finances, only the lenders would.
The Times reported that in a 2015 example, Kushner booked $8.3 million in losses driven by "significant depreciation" of real estate owned by Kushner and his company. The loss offset Kushner’s income of $1.7 million in salary and investment gains.

A spokesman for Kushner’s attorney told the Times that Kushner followed the advice of attorneys and accountants, and filed and paid all taxes due required by law. The spokesman also said he wouldn’t respond to assumptions taken from documents that offer an incomplete view of Kushner’s finances.

Kushner’s losses, stemming in large part from the depreciation deduction, appeared to wipe out his taxable income in most years covered by the documents.
Note the intentional uncertain language that's been employed - 'significant', 'in large part' and 'appeared to' are in no way quantitative measurements and are indica of an incomplete financial picture. I could argue a certain single deduction is 'significant' even if, for example, it comprised 10% or 15% of total expenses.

Then again, after reading this article on the Kushner flagship property, one might reconsider the parameters for 'significant', etc. Too bad the NYT doesn't grant Jared Kushner the same courtesy.

I'm going to skip over most of the rest of the ZH article (primarily the class warfare bullshit where they focus on 'cash generation' and conveniently ignore cash outflows like interest on the loans and the principal payments thereon) because there's only one real thing to discuss, and that of course is what the NYT omits from all this in order to paint the most negative portrayal of real estate companies. The depreciation deduction is not a 'loophole'; it is a long-standing accounting concept. The specific thing not mentioned is this - a taxpayer (any taxpayer) who uses physical / capital assets in the course of business is allowed a depreciation deduction, which is a gradual, annual reduction of the cost basis of that asset, so when you eventually sell / dispose of that asset, your taxable gain on that asset is increased by two things - the increase / appreciation in market value of the asset and the accumulated depreciation on that asset between the time you buy it and the time you sell it. That number can be 'significant', if I may ape the NYT's terminology! Eventually you pay the piper but depreciation allows you to delay the inevitable. Essentially, the real estate business is a calculated gamble on a) the increase in rents you can derive from a rental property and b) the appreciation of that property.

A brief note on all this, which includes many of the previous stories on Trump's properties over the past forty or so years. The tone is this - when Trump loses money on a real estate or other business deal, it's reported that he's a bad / stupid businessman; when Trump makes money on a real estate or other business deal, it's reported as nefarious activity that takes advantage of tax 'loopholes' and all the rest. Ever notice that? I bet you did!

Now for the fun / speculative part:

The outcome is apparent in Jared Kushner’s tax returns, which were summarized in the documents reviewed by The New York Times. Here’s an example from 2015.

Income

W-2 income: $198,000.
Taxable interest: $536,000.
Dividends: $1,000.
Capital gains: $974,000.

Deductions

Tax losses from real estate and other partnerships: $3.5 million.
Tax losses carried forward from previous years: $4.8 million.

Total adjusted gross income

Negative $6.6 million.

Tax refund

$4,000.
Do you notice a few things missing from here and / or something else which would make you scratch your head? Let's start with the W-2 - $198K. Unless Jared made the very unusual W-4 (employer withholding tax form employees file when hired) choice / election of 'Exempt' (no Federal withholdings, which is foolish but you can choose to do, but Social Security & Medicare taxes are still withheld by statute), his Federal tax withheld on that W-2 is in the $35K to $38K range, which tells me that Jared did in fact pay Federal taxes that year. If he owed $31K for a Federal liability and $35K in Federal tax was withheld, there's your '$4,000 refund'. And by the way - how likely is it that a refund is exactly $4,000? I would make an attempt to reproduce this situation with my tax software but there are too many unknowns, the large ones being the composition of that NOL - it's most likely the (active) real estate loss but he could have other carryforwards like a capital loss (which is used against the aforementioned $974K capital gain; he could even have a charitable contribution carryforward, which would be the amount disallowed on the prior year's return because it's limited ion certain cases. For that matter, note how all the other numbers are rounded, most likely an effort by the NYT to a) avoid being sued for disclosing confidential information if they gave exact figures or b) they're pulling number out of their asses again.

To summarize, it's another piece of shit hit job by the NYT, but you knew that already - I'm just making it official.

#1  That's awesome, Raj. Thank you.

Just for giggles I took a quick look at the most recent (year-end 2017) 10-K for the NYT's parent company, via Edgar. I may be misreading this because I don't have anything resembling your financial background, but the NYT's consolidated statement of operations (at p. 54 of the 10-K) shows that the NYT reduced its reported revenues by about $62mm (for each of 2015, 2016 and 2017) for depreciation and amortization. And the NYT isn't in the real estate business, at least not intentionally. Bad, bad NYT. They're also underfunded by about $69mm on their pension obligations (MD&A at page 8) but that looks like part of a much longer story.

#2  But come to think of it, the much more relevant point would be to compare the Trump family tax situation to the Sulzberger family tax situation. I'm sure there's a standing order to the Sulzberger family accounts and advisors that "Our objective is to maximize our federal tax payments, because, you know, it's good to spread the wealth around."

#6  To flip it around: If Kushner's company had bought a BMW in 2008 for $100K and was still showing the BMW as having a value of $100K in 2018, the NYT headline would be "Kushner's Company Lies About the Value of Its Assets." Depreciation is a real thing, even if its exact treatment in a financial statement is the result of an accounting convention (GAAP).

Egypt's Sisi says 'no role for Brotherhood as long as he stays in power'
[Al Ahram] Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi said in an exclusive interview published late Friday that there is "no role for the Moslem Brüderbund as long as [he] stays in power," asserting that the Egyptian people would not accept the return of the Brotherhood to power, because their "unviable" ideology.

During the interview with the Kuwaiti newspaper al-Shahed, El-Sisi spoke on issues of Arab national security, the influx of holy warriors in Syria, Egypt’s relationship with Kuwait, and several domestic issues.

He talked on the importance of cooperation by the Arab States to protect Arab national security from dangers faced by the Arab nations, adding that such a relationship would create a state of deterrence to those who aim to assault the Arab world.

El-Sisi also affirmed the depth of Egypt and Kuwait’s special relationship, praising the role of Kuwait’s Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmed al-Jaber al-Sabah in supporting Egypt in critical times.

Speaking on the Arab Spring, El-Sisi diagnosed the phenomena as a "wrong treatment to a wrong reality", adding that the "constructive chaos left destruction and havoc in several Arab states."

El-Sisi blamed that chaos on the Brotherhood, due to their roles in countries like Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
and Libya, while discussing his fear of where the 36,000 holy warriors involved in the crisis in Syria, which has only just started to recover from the war, would go.

"Where will they go after the war in Syria is over, especially if they will be used by intelligence bodies who seek to cause destruction in the region?" he wondered.

El-Sisi also reiterated the need of renewing religious discourse, stressing that religion doesn’t contradict with life.

He said that the problem falls on a false understanding of religious texts, as well as them being used incorrectly to push agendas.

The president also added that Egypt never conspired against anyone, despite offenses which emerged from "an Arab state" and other harassment from regional states.

Iraq
‘They studied in Western universities’
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] There is a sentence that has been repeated while welcoming Barham Salih as the President of Iraq and Adel Abdul-Mahdi as prime minister-designate and which is "he has studied in Western universities".

The same refrain was made when Omar Razzaz was tasked with forming the current government in Jordan. This sentence works like a double edged sword, as it comes in the backdrop of various revolutionary upheavals and coups over the decades, and implicitly refers to a time of "renaissance" when "education" was described as the pre-requisite for development.

As for the reference in the sentence to the "West", it is part and parcel of the idea of "renaissance". Didn’t the whole renaissance saga began when Rifa’a al-Tahtawi and Ahmad Faris Shidyaq, among others travelled to the West? Their approach implied a tendency that was fought for many decades ‐ the tendency of dealing with the West as a source of knowledge and enlightenment, and not as a source of aggression and colonialism.

In this regard, studying in some of the best Western universities carries with it the tag of having good morals that are regarded as guarantees against corruption and towards protecting public money. The refrain also comes with an air of nostalgia for the times few of us lived in and most of us have only heard or read about. The other face of nostalgia is a protest over a time when the officer, security figure, preacher and suspicious millionaire replaced the graduates of Western universities.

The resumes of Salih, Abdul-Mahdi and Razzaz raise optimism, without serving the theory of optimism in the principle of studying in the West. First, there are still doubts about the real capabilities of these sincere graduates who have become politicians as long as issues of political authority and sharing it is not yet settled in any Arab country. We are aware that many Arab regimes have exaggerated the term "technocrat", where it means holding the capabilities of power but without having any real power. Salam Fayyad
...Fayyad's political agenda holds that neither violence nor peaceful negotiations have brought the Paleostinians any closer to an independent state. The alternative to both, violent negotiations, doesn't seem to be working too well, either...
’s experience in Ramallah is probably the best example in this regard.

This optimism which has its reasons points to the naivety of many. Just as a reminder, we belong to societies where rulers believe that they own and inherit the nation. Our half-baked identities stilt our progress and foment civil wars. Battles tear us apart ‐ with their savagery, dissipation of wealth and medieval ideas. Such challenges cannot be confronted just by a bunch of educated and honest people whom optimism pictures as alternatives to much needed popular movements and broad intellectual changes. What is more dangerous is that being sanguine about "education" as the agent for "improving conditions" might end up with having people who are merely optimistic about "working" to reconstruct what "wars have destroyed," similar to what is being said about the "reconstruction" of Syria. We should not forget that Bashir al-Assad almost became the graduate of a Western university.

Family of Pakistani Christian on death row pray for freedom
[PULSE.NG] The family of Asia Bibi, a Christian mother who faces becoming the first person to be executed for blasphemy in Pakistain, said they hoped the Supreme Court would free her.

But in any case they feared for their future living in Pakistain under the blasphemy laws, they told AFP.

Bibi, who has been on death row since 2010, is at the centre of the high-profile case that has divided Pakistain and drawn prayers from the Vatican.

On Monday the Supreme Court heard her last appeal and said it had reached a judgement, which it has yet to reveal.

"We are hopeful that whatever the court proceedings are it will come out as positive for us," her husband Ashiq Mesih told AFP.

Her daughter Eisham Ashiq added: "I will be very happy the day my mother will be released. I will hug her and will cry meeting her and will thank God that he has got her released."

Bibi's family are in London on a visit organised by Aid to the Church in Need, a charity which helps repressed and persecuted Christians.

Bibi, a labourer, was accused of blasphemy against the Prophet Mohammed in 2009 by Moslem women she was working with in a field.

The charge is punishable by death under legislation that rights groups say is routinely abused to settle personal vendettas.

Her family said that if Bibi is released, it would be difficult to stay in her homeland.

"Pakistain is ours: we were born there, raised there," Mesih said.

"The only tension we have is the blasphemy law. It is imposed on Christians. When it is imposed on us our (Moslem) brothers should think that the Christians never say anything bad about the Koran.

Key bill seeking strict punishments for false blasphemy accusations withdrawn from Senate on PTI request
[DAWN] The Senate Secretariat on Saturday returned the Prevention of Electronic Crimes (Amendment) Bill 2018 on a request of the ruling Pakistain Tehrik-e-Insaf
...a political party in Pakistan. PTI was founded by former Pakistani cricket captain and philanthropist Imran Khan. The party's slogan is Justice, Humanity and Self Esteem, each of which is open to widely divergent interpretations....
(PTI).

Leader of the House in the Senate Syed Shibli Faraz had on Friday submitted a request to the secretariat for the withdrawal of the bill.

The bill had been moved on the directions of the Islamabad High Court after (then) Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui had ordered last year that those who make false accusations of blasphemy should be given the same punishment as those convicted of blasphemy under the law.

However,
Switzerland makes more than cheese...
in a statement yesterday, Federal Minister for Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony Pir Noorul Haq Qadri said that the government was determined to restore the bill to its "original soul" under Section 295-C of the Pakistain Penal Code (PPC).

Section 295-C was introduced in 1986 mandating the death penalty
for "use of derogatory remarks in respect of the Holy Prophet (PTUI!)".

Qadri also said that PTI members in the National Assembly and the Senate would strongly oppose any amendments to Section 295-C.
