-Lurid Crime Tales-
Wifey Dearest
Waukesha - A New Berlin woman accused of attempted homicide told detectives that she wrapped plastic wrap across her husband's face and hit him with a dumbbell because she wanted him to shut up, according to a criminal complaint filed Monday in Waukesha County Circuit Court.
Methinks, perhaps, that the thrill is gone...
Valentina Grenader, 45, was charged with attempted first-degree intentional homicide, strangulation and suffocation, and substantial battery. She is being held in the Waukesha County Jail on $100,000 bail.
Honey...schnookems...c'mahn. It was just a joke...
The woman's husband needed eight stitches to close a head wound, the criminal complaint says.
I wonder if it went "BONK!" like it always did on the Three Stooges?
The couple showed up at the New Berlin Police Department on Friday night with Mark Grenader telling an officer he wanted to press charges against his wife, the complaint says. He said she initiated sexual contact, tying him to bed posts and blindfolding him. Then she put the plastic wrap over his mouth and nose, making it difficult for him to breathe. He began thrashing and tried to yell for help.
Don't worry, honey. It's all part of the show...
She told him she was going to kill him and then herself, the complaint says.
Well, kill yourself first and then come back for me, okay?
As he pleaded for his life, she hit him three or four times with a dumbbell in the head, the complaint says.
Dumbbell hits dumbbell with dumbbell. Film at eleven...
Grenader told detectives that she wasn't trying to kill her husband. She said she has a gambling problem and told him while he was tied up that she had lost $800 at a casino. He was yelling so loud that she wanted to quiet him so they could talk about her problem, the complaint says.
Now, now, honey...
BONK...
honey...
BONK...
please, honey...
BONK...

She said her husband is a "control freak," the complaint says.
Ah, he's a control freak. I gotta say, hon, I'm gonna need a little more convincing here...
Court Commissioner Martin Binn ordered Grenader to not possess any weapons, including dumbbells.
Smart move, Marty. Maybe next time she'll just beat him to death with a clock radio or something...
She is scheduled to be back in court Wednesday. If convicted of all three felonies, the maximum penalty is 73 years and six months in prison.

"My husband's brain has been stolen!"
A New York woman has filed a multi-million dollar lawsuit charging that her dead husband’s brain has been missing for more than two years.

In the complaint that was filed at the State Supreme Court in Manhattan, Mozelle Purifoy claims the brain of her husband was illegally removed from his body for medical research after he died in July 2006, Newsday reported Tuesday.

She claims it went missing following an autopsy by the Office of The Suffolk County Medical Examiner on Long Island. As a result, Purifoy is suing Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City and its related units for allegedly attempting to acquire the brain without permission, according to the paper.

Purifoy is seeking $4 million in damages for emotional distress. She said that neither she nor her husband, Tom, signed any organ donation card.

#1  King County WA is having a similiar issue; seems the Medical Examiner harvested brains and other organs and sold them off. not getting a lot of press but he set the county up for mass quantities of lawsuits.
(could insert snarky comment about typical Seattle libs brains being empty and not worth a lot, but won't)

#5  I wonder if there is any relationship to Amb. John Emil Peurifoy A really interesting guy my dad met in 1954 on a US President Lines ship in the Pacific.

Peurifoy's wrote the following jingle which appeared in Time magazine July 28, 1954, which seemed to sum up nicely the U.S. attitude about the CIA-sponsored operation in Guatemala:

Sing a song of quetzals, pockets full of peace! The junta's in the palace, they've taken out a lease. The Commies are in hiding, just across the street; To the embassy of Mexico they beat a quick retreat. And pistol-packing Peurifoy looks mighty optimistic For the land of Guatemala is no longer Communistic.

HAMBURG, N.Y. (AP) - Health officials shut down a suburban Buffalo restaurant after an inspector found employees butchering a dead deer inside the business. Erie County Health Department officials said they got a tip Friday about a dead deer in the China King restaurant in the town of Hamburg, just south of Buffalo. . . .

There's been a spread of prion-based Chronic Wasting Disease among deer herds in some areas.  This is the class of untreatable diseases that includes 'mad cow' disease. Prions have now been found in deer muscle and spread from deer to deer the way the related prion disease scrapie spreads among sheep.   It's possible, but unconfirmed, that it could spread to humans through exposure to uncooked or undercooked deer meat.

#1  In Africa, both cholera and ebola spread at funerals. Relatives handle both the dead body and the funeral food. According to a National Geographic article, "The Disease Detectives" (IIRC; from about 1991), one of the Guineas had to outlaw traditional funerals to halt the spread of cholera. It began in a fishing village, probably from bad shellfish, and spread inland.

19 year old girl killed as violence erupts in Somaliland voter-registration
(SomaliNet) A 19-year-old girl was killed Saturday in Somalia's breakaway region of Somaliland after police opened fire on a rowdy crowd, Radio Garowe reported. The victim, identified as Hamda Ahmed Abdi, died at the scene in Borama, capital of Awdal region. The media reported that another girl, who was unidentified, was also wounded.

Witnesses say police reinforcements led by Borama police chief Muse Abdullahi Hanfi rushed to the scene, but the commander was injured in a car accident on his way to the location and was being treated at a local hospital.

However, it is not clear why the crowd became violent and local police officials have refused to comment on the matter, but it is the first incident of violence since the voter-registration process kicked off in Somaliland earlier this month.

In Sool region, which is under Somaliland control, the region's influential traditional elders issued a warning to Somaliland's separatist rulers. Speaking in Garowe, capital of rival sub-state Puntland, the Sool clan elders led by Garad Saleban Garad Mohamed warned Somaliland officials not to bring the voter-registration process to Las Anod, capital of Sool region.

Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but has not been recognized internationally, although the region enjoys relative stability and has a functioning administration. The breakaway region is slated to hold presidential elections in March 2009 with three political parties competing in the elections.

Woman stoned to death for adultery after Somali court ruling
MOGADISHU (AFP) — Thousands of people gathered Monday to witness 50 Somali men stone a woman to death after an Islamic court in the southern port of Kismayo found her guilty of adultery, witnesses said. Aisho Ibrahim Dhuhulow, who had been found guilty of extra-marital intercourse was buried in the ground up to her neck while the men pelted her head with rocks.

"Our sister Aisha asked the Islamic Sharia court in Kismayo to be charged and punished for the crime she committed," local Islamist leader Sheikh Hayakallah told the crowd. "She admitted in front of the court to engaging in adulterous sexual intercourse," he added.

"She was asked several times to review her confession but she stressed that she wanted Sharia law and the deserved punishment to apply."
Who moved her mouth for her when she 'said' this?
The execution was carried in one of the city's main squares.

The port of Kismayo was seized in August by a coalition of forces loyal to rebel leader Hassan Turki, and the Shebab, the country's main radical Islamist insurgent organisation. The new administration formed there began implementing a strict form of Sharia (Islamic law). "This afternoon we are telling the people of Kismayo that we are practising a punishment that is rare in this region and was carried out in Kismayo for the first time," Sheikh Hayakallah said.

Cameras were banned from the public stoning but print and radio journalists were allowed to attend.

#5  The phrase "let he who is without sin cast the first stone" is frequently taken way out of context. So allow me a brief diversion from the main news item to explain.

The two most powerful groups in Roman Palestine were the Pharisees, the people who kept the law meticulously and were, unfortunately, often self-righteous about it. The Saducees were the political elite, cynical and self-serving. Neither group could tolerate John the Baptist and Jesus's calling them on their attitudes.

The Pharisees tried to set Jesus up by bringing "a woman taken in adultery." They thought that if he said "stone her" it negated his talk about love and forgiveness; and if he said to let her go, he would be denying the validity of the Law of Moses. Jesus stumped them by telling them, "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone." Slowly they left, beginning with the oldest among them. When they had all left, Jesus asked the woman, "Where are they who condemned you?...Neither do I condemn you. Go therefore and SIN NO MORE (emphasis mine)." John 8 1-11

Jesus doesn't condone sin here. Instead, he offers mercy and a second chance.

China's Enviro-Problems (to cheer you up)
Decades of extraordinary growth have catapulted China to the top of the world's economic charts, earning the admiration of much of the rest of the world. Indeed, China's continued economic rise has been one of the few certainties of the 21st century. Increasingly, however, the China story is not one of economic miracle but of environmental disaster.

Worries over air quality at the Beijing Olympics, tainted products and China's rapidly growing contribution to global climate change have focused international attention on the environmental downside of China's growth. At home, the Chinese people watch as environmental degradation and pollution transform their landscape, and in the process endanger their health and future livelihoods.

In China's cities, merely walking out the front door results in an immediate assault on the senses. The Chinese people complain most often about noise pollution. A cacophony of construction booms and car horns is a permanent fixture of life. The sky is often blanketed in a thick gray haze of pollutants. The culprits are the ever-present coal-fired power plants and giant heavy-industry complexes that fuel the country's growth, and more and more the noxious emissions of automobiles.

The Chinese are in the midst of an American-style love affair with private cars. The country is adding 14,000 new cars to its roads every day and is in the process of laying 52,000 miles of new roadways - 10,000 more miles than the entire U.S. interstate highway system. By 2030, China is expected to surpass the United States as the country with the most cars on its roads.
I read somewhere that extrapolation is dangerous.

More broadly, Chinese consumption patterns are also following those of the West, despite the warnings of prominent Chinese cultural and environmental leaders. The country's moneyed city dwellers desire air conditioners, refrigerators and second homes.
Obama can fix that, too.

Popular leisure activities for the wealthy include carbon-intensive activities such as yachting, golfing and car clubs. In the process, urban residents consume 350 percent more energy than rural Chinese, and more than 70 percent of this energy comes from dirty burning coal. Every seven to 10 days, another coal-fired power plant, big enough to serve all the households in Dallas or San Diego, opens somewhere in China.

The environmental toll is enormous. China has five of the world's 10 most polluted cities, and on an average day in China's major cities, 75 percent of the residents are breathing unclean air. The end result: 750,000 Chinese die prematurely every year from air pollution-related respiratory diseases.

For all their wealth, China's cities have yet to conquer the challenge of clean water. Among all of China's 660-odd cities, only one small city of 200,000, Lianyuan in Hunan Province, can claim to provide clean drinking water straight from the tap. In the rest of the country - even the country's capital, Beijing - residents boil their water or buy it in bottles.

Even then, they have no real assurance that the water is safe to drink. And in this desperately water-scarce country, the urban infrastructure does little to conserve. Urban China loses up to 20 percent of its water through leaky pipes. Cities such as Shanghai and Tianjin have sunk six feet over the past decade and a half as precious underground water reserves are drawn down, causing skyscrapers to tilt and encouraging coastal flooding.

Yet tilting skyscrapers are the least of the cities' concerns. In Beijing, factories, buildings and underground pipelines have all been destroyed by the plundering of underground aquifers and the resultant land subsidence.

The environmental costs levied on China's 400 million urban residents pale in comparison, however, to those faced by the country's more than 800 million farmers and other rural residents.

#1  35 years ago I wrote my senior thesis in Political Science on the environmental problems in the USSR.

My professor, a Soviet refugee, provided me with numerous translated articles from local Soviet publications to go along with my other research.

The short version is that the enviromental disasters were caused, primarily, by Marxist accounting. The concept of "a free good" (one in which there is no human labor component) caused the most apalling waste. Only the best timber and ore was worth processing so the "more expensive" marginal stuff was just dumped willy nilly. (It was more expensive because it took a labor component to process and that was the only place you had "costs")

I wonder how much of China's problems have a Marxist component.

It was my first lesson that Accounting Matters!

Anyone like to discuss the role a simple accounting rule change (aka mark to market) had to do with the current financial collapse?

Japan hangs two inmates, first under Aso government
Justice Minister Eisuke Mori announced on Tuesday that two death-row inmates have been executed, marking the first executions under the government of Prime Minister Taro Aso formed in late September and breaking a record high for the number of people executed per year.

According to the Justice Ministry, the two are Michitoshi Kuma, 70, who was at the Fukuoka detention center, and Masahiro Takashio, 55, at the Sendai detention center. They were the first executions since Sept. 11.

They bring the annual total of people executed by the government to 15, the most since 1999 when the government started publishing the number of people executed. The government has been executing inmates at a pace of once around every two months since the period of former Justice Minister Kunio Hatoyama.

An execution of a death-row inmate requires authorization by the justice minister.

#1  I'm surprised that Japan still does executions. We get so much flack from EU about our executions. I just had a thought. Let's micro chip our beasts in the brain or someplace where it's a bit difficult to take it out and offer our worst to countries who are too civilized to execute them. send a crazed serial killer to Sweden, for example. I'm sure, Holland could find a nice home for one of our drug gang executioners. That way, we're happy, the host country is happy and who cares about the feelings of the brutes we send there? If they sneak back and are caught, then, of course, it is execution without process, since process had already been done.

Miss. county has 123% of voters registered, 486 over 105 years old
Mississippi's voter situation is hard to believe. Places like Madison County have over 123% more registered voters than people over the age of 18.

Sue Sautermeister, First District Election Commissioner in Madison County, tried to purge the rolls, but ran into trouble when it was discovered it takes a vote of three of the five election commissioners and the purge cannot take place within 90 days of a federal election.

Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann is the first to admit the situation with voter registration in this state is terrible.

"It is terrible," he says. "Combined with the fact that we don't have voter ID in Mississippi, anybody can show up at any poll that happens to know the people who have left town or died -- and go vote for them."

"Whenever we have a third party determined by payment, for example, as they did in Benton County -- 'walking-around' money -- and they determine what that vote is going to be, they've taken your vote, whether they may have voted like you would have or not, they've still thwarted the process and they've still have taken your vote away from you," added Hosemann.

Sue Sautermeister is working hard in the First District of Madison County to start a purging of the voter rolls as soon after the election as possible. She has file drawers full of names of people who haven't voted in years and are known to be dead.

"We have people who registered in 1965 who have never voted," she says. "We have 486 people (registered who are) over 105."

Hosemann says 190,000 new voters have registered for this election and he believes the turnout will be historic.

#5  Nah, counties need a better 'jury duty' system that is linked to the voter rolls. Everyone needs a notice at least once every two years. Getting a jury duty notice and becoming a 'no show' will do a remarkable job of purging those rolls or filling the county coffers with 'fines' that are due 30 days before election day.

#6  In a lot of the rural South the old voter rolls don't get purged. Historically I suspect it was to allow the dead white guys to keep voting against civil rights after 1965, though I doubt too much of that is happening today. Just inertia and now compelling reason to do anything. Our parish purges your name if you have not voted in a certain period of time - maybe 5 years? AND we require photo ID. We are a modern place.

Newlywed girl fed to dogs, shot dead in ‘honor killing’
KARACHI/ISLAMABAD: Pakistan police yesterday said that they will probe allegations that a young newlywed was mauled by dogs and shot to death in front of her father in the latest so-called “honor killing” to prompt outrage in Pakistan.

According to police and rights activists, 17-year-old Tasleem Solangi was killed back in March in a rural area of Pakistan’s southern province of Sindh. The girl was falsely accused of immorality and had dogs set on her as a punishment before she was shot dead, the girl’s parents said yesterday.

Gul Sher, father of the girl, demanded justice for the killing of his daughter after he said a council in their village in the southern province of Sindh falsely accused her of having sex with a man. “They made dogs run after her and bite her then she was shot dead,” Sher told reporters in Karachi.

Now since other details have emerged, no civilized person could even think of this happening in a feudal society in this era of human development and human rights. Tasleem, according to her neighbors was subjected to one of the most heinous crimes in history.

According to another report, she and her father were asked by powerful feudal lords to hand over her property including six acres of land. On her refusal Tasleem and her father were abducted and detained. Tasleem was pregnant.

A local landlord and local tribal chief headed a local “Jirga” and Sain Allah Dad heard the case from both sides, but the tribal chief openly supported abductors. Tasleem was awarded a punishment unthinkable even in dark ages’ traditions. Hungry and ferocious dogs were unleashed at her. She tried to run for cover and, finally, an exhausted girl fell to the mercy of dogs. One Zamir Solangi shot her dead in the presence of her father.

#3  this crap happens in GWB's Saudi sewer. Yet that supposed filled-with-the-spirit Born Again Christoid, NEVER criticizes the Saud terrorist entity. Why? He is owned by the Saud Royal Cockroaches.

You dare to doubt my rock scribed truths? Then what has the Bush White House (Mecca West) done for the oppressed Christians in Egypt, Lebanon, and in the West Bank and Syria. Not a damn thing. Yet his State Department pours millions into Muslim political action groups. Saud financed mosques on US soil spew anti-semitism and genocide activity against Jews and Christians. Bush sees nothing wrong with that.

FOR A SAFER TOMORROW, DEPORT A MUSLIM CARPET HUMPER TODAY.

Southeast Asia
Obama's former house in Jakarta up for sale
The small colonial-style house Barack Obama lived in as a child has received a steady stream of visitors ahead of the U.S. presidential election, from potential buyers and journalists, to a businessman who wants to turn it into the "Sweet Home Obama Bar."

The two-bedroom pavilion Obama lived in - initially built as a guesthouse - would be sold with the main, sprawling residence next door and the 12,900 sq. foot (1,200 sq. meter) plot of land. Together, they have an estimated market value of $3 million dollars. And that does not take into account the potential Obama-factor if the Democratic presidential candidate wins on Nov. 4.

Aboe Bakar says one broker claimed a U.S. Embassy official was ready to pay five times its worth if that happened, though Tristram Perry, the embassy's public diplomacy officer, said he was not aware of any such offer.

Obama moved to Jakarta with his American mother and Indonesian stepfather in 1967, spending the first two years in another humble home, where chickens and ducks used to cackle in the backyard and two baby crocodiles slithered around in a fenced-off pond.

They relocated to the small red-tile roofed pavilion with art deco windows on Taman Amir Hamzah Street in 1970 when Obama was 9 years old and stayed there for the next two years.

Aboe Bakar has few stories to tell about Obama as a child, except the time his poodle ran away, never to be seen again.

"Oh, he cried for two days," the former Navy admiral said, wearily taking a drag from his third cigarette as he showed off a long list of visitors who have knocked on his door in recent weeks.

Among those who have expressed interest in the house have been Bart Bartele, a Dutchman who owns several popular pubs in Jakarta.

He says he offered to rent the smaller pavilion to open the "Sweet Home Obama Bar" - a cafe that would feature an "Obama-blend coffee," a mix of beans from Kenya and Java. He would also serve "stroopwafels," a caramel-type treat brought to Indonesia during the centuries-long occupation of the Dutch.

"The idea is to have snacks, simple food and maybe some merchandise," Bartele said, adding that he was not certain, with all the recent interest, if Aboe Bakar would go for it. "We'll see. It's mostly just for fun anyway."

Iran: Two Baluchis hanged in Zahedan
(AKI) - Two Baluchis accused of belonging to a band of drug traffickers, were hanged on Monday in Zahedan, capital of Iranian Baluchistan.

In an official statement issued by Zahedan prison, the names of the two prisoners were not released, only their initials.

According to data released by the Italy-based human rights group, Hands Off Cain, the hanging of E.M and Kh.N lifted the number of executions in Iran to 230 since the beginning of 2008.

Last week, the Italian rights group said that Iran ranked close to China and Saudi Arabia for the highest number of executions. "Iran was 'distinguished' by the high number of death sentences, carried out by public hangings, usually with a crane or low platform to assure a slow and painful death," the organisation said in a statement.
