#1  There’s a heated debate going on across the country about the proper definition of a recession.

No there isn't. The heated debate is about how low life liars and their henchmen keep thinking they're getting away with it.

#2 The media actually thinks they got away with re-defining recession on the fly. They will look really stupid when they try to do it yet again next quarter.

#3 Well the Department of Labor and Department of Commerce produce the key economic indicators and I am sure the word is out to put a thumb on the scale and produce a much rosier picture next month

#4 each recession is different but there are some fairly obvious types and economists could have and should have produced a typology by now

so far this recession has been shallow and we've had a number of other shallow recessions

what would be bad is if the recession deepened a lot, e.g., 2008-09 - so far that is not the case -- or if we got a double dip recession e.g., 1979, 1981-82

#8 But most economists argue that the U.S. isn’t officially in a recession until the National Bureau of Economic Research, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that conducts research and assesses market cycles, makes the call.

Nonprofit and nonpartisan, huh? Who appointed them?

#9 Non-profit = kissed the IRS's ass.

#10 NBER is a non profit org. It is self governing although big contributors are on the board of directors.

They are about the only org that does detailed research on the business cycle (many economists consider the biz cycle an ugly duckling dead end).

It is funded by grants and contract research. NIH and NSF are two govt agencies that fund contract research.

A number of private foundations also fund research or have grant programs that fund the NBER's indirect admin costs: e.g., Gates Foundation, Sloan Foundation, Bradley Foundation.
