#1 A provocative article and compendium of events. Unfortunately however, it blames the average citizen (age 40 and beyond) for the death of Pax Americana and the "sublime suffering."

Interview of the Author, if you can stand Jeff Golberg's constant use of 'uh' and Giglio's tiringly repetitive use of 'like'.

If this interview was intended to support book sales, I'm afraid it failed miserably.

#2 opening our minds to ideas like collateral damage

That was covered pretty well by the Allied bombing offensive in WW2. By the end of the war concerns about civilian casualties was about at its lowest ebb. And it wasn't just the 'bad guys'.

#3 I recall long time ago reading a Guinness book of record to the effect that in the world of taking notes and records (history) that there has been around only two hundred years of peace in the world. Somebody is always doing something somewhere. America is an anomaly in experience long periods of peace to the effect they think what is normal for them is normal for the world and its history.

#4 /\ Switzerland appears to be doing pretty well with keeping the fok out of everyone else's business and saving a little money.

#5 The USA is an anomaly in its location, vast oceans to the east and west, and two at least tractable large nations to its north and south. Not many other large nations have been so favorably located.

#6 I worked in Switzerland and Lichtenstein for a few years. This was the only area I ever considered aside from the USA. They have their problems (seems to be tribal roots grounded) but in all a nice place. Right now, aiming for Texas or maybe Florida. Massachusetts has too many problems, I do not belong here.

#7 In some respects, the only way we get the sort of America us Rantburgers want is to never stop fighting for it. Most of the problems we have acquired since the end of WW II are because a lot of people figured they didn't have to fight for freedom any more.

I've never heard of anger against Americans, Brits, and Canadians from the people of Normandy, despite the civilian casualties from D-Day and its preparations.

I've never heard any Americans -- or Germans -- whining about the US citizens who went to serve in the German army and died to bombs, artillery, bullets, or a bayonet.

The country isn't split because Afghanistan went on so long -- the Korean War hasn't ended, either -- but because of alien philosophies we've let fester and gain popularity among the power-hungry.

The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.

That's one reason I hate the "it's over; the US is dead" and the "we need a national divorce" crowds. The first is surrender; the second is a child's fantasy.

#10 I'll second that, Rob. I don't see the intellectual capital to do a better job than the Founding Fathers did anywhere in America today. The left is completely insane and the right is unfortunately totally co-opted by grifters. Better we straighten out what we have.
