Nixon only went there to split the communist world. The plan to make them democratic with engagement was a good one, but died in 1989 in Tianenmen Square. But Bill Clinton and the neo-liberals couldn't resist admitting them to the WTO, and they made a freaking fortune. Had the benefit of devastating the American working class, too.

Standard operating procedure for the Chinese when it comes to dealing with "christians". they are always seduced by money, always. Chinese history is rife with examples but who bothers to study history these days, certainly NO "politician".

Our leaders over the past 40+ years simply would not treat them like dishonest, racist, enemies of all we used to hold. The American century has ended, are we to face an American eclipse or the Chinese Century. That question increasingly seem to have a tragic flavor of Ozymandias.
