#10 China has always been big with the words, usually coming from Generals which provide deniability.

Fact is it won't be long before the US will stop selling to Taiwan because of political pressures, economics and cowardice. At that point, if Taiwan doesn't have other allies they'll start looking for some kind of accomidation. Perhaps some kind of special area like Hong Kong, or a ten or twenty year transition plan to allow the Chinese to take victory now but delay the inevitable and avoid a conflict that might really smash up the region.
