#2 As a boy in Latvia between the wars, my father underwent the mandatory military training all boys there were given as part of their schooling, whether the school was public or private. It was understood that Russia — then the early years of the Soviet Union — would likely at some point want to retake lost territories, and the brand new nation needed to be prepared.

This is just the reality of living on Russia’s border.
