2 suspected in Danish police data hacking
[Al Ahram] Officials say the Swedish founder of the file-sharing site The Pirate Bay is suspected along with a Dane of hacking into a company handling sensitive information for the Danish police.

Police in Denmark announced the investigation Thursday, and a source close to the investigation told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named that one of the suspects was Pirate Bay founder Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, who was incarcerated
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
in Cambodia last year and repatriated to Sweden where he is in jug, suspected in a similar case.

The source spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not allowed to speak on the record.

The Danish suspect was arrested Wednesday.

National police chief Jens Henrik Hoejbjerg said the hackers copied some 4 million pieces of data but there was no immediate evidence it had been used.

Ethiopia summons Egypt's ambassador over Nile dam
[Al Ahram] Æthiopia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs is demanding an official explanation from Egypt after comments from politicians suggesting Egypt attack or sabotage a Nile River dam Æthiopia is building upstream from parched Egypt.

Ministry front man Dina Mufti said Thursday that Egypt's ambassador to Æthiopia has been summoned to explain the "hostile remarks."

Æthiopia a week ago started diverting the flow of the Nile River to make way for its $4.2 billion hydroelectric plant, dubbed the Grand Æthiopian Renaissance Dam. Egypt fears the dam will mean a diminished share of the Nile River.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohammed Kamel Amr, in a statement Thursday, said Egypt will seek to coordinate with Sudan and Æthiopia over the issue of the dam going forward. Amr also said Egypt's water security cannot be ignored or hurt.

#4  Yes indeed Joe, an Egyptian war directed against the Æthiops would surely be convenient right now...

General war's unnecessary. Modern aircraft can destroy dams with the press of a button. Egypt has JDAM's. Ethiopia will need to beef up its air defenses in the dam's vicinity.
Posted by: Zhang Fei || 06/07/2013 12:41 Comments || Top||

#5  It's not even a matter of convenience. Egypt's agricultural sector depends on water from the Nile. If it depended on rainfall, there would be no agricultural sector in Egypt.

#3  There may lie the compromise. It can be filled more slowly, perhaps. After filling, if no water is diverted, Egypt will be back where it was, no loss. Ethiopia can allow dam output to ramp up.

#4  After filling, if no water is diverted, Egypt will be back where it was
Last I checked, Egypt is in DIRE straits, and can ill afford any more losses, even those related to simply filling an upstream dam. Maybe a few extra billion $ in international aid is called for.

Fracking: The Death Knell Of OPEC
[NEWS.INVESTORS] The statement concealed the anything-but-tranquil tone of the meeting, in which members were attacking each other and warning of a split.

Nigeria Oil Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke declared U.S. shale oil "a grave concern," according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.

African nations sounded the sharpest warnings because they have been the first to see the impact of our fracking revolution on their exports, which fell 41% in 2012 from 2011.

There are comparable figures elsewhere in OPEC, as well as in nations with state, rather than private, oil companies, all of which are showing big downturns in buying from the world's biggest retail oil buyer.

Fact is, fracking has made U.S. oil production skyrocket 20% in just the last year, according to the Energy Department. That's the biggest increase in 21 years, and it is expected to soar another 21% in the next five years.

The growth has curbed the U.S. need for energy imports. America is expected to end its dependence on imported liquid fuels by 2025, according to a recent study by the American Petroleum Institute. And worse still for OPEC, the U.S. has become a net energy exporter -- read: competitor -- with oil now its top export.

This has the potential to shake the current global energy infrastructure to its foundation.

OPEC, which controls 35% of global supplies, has different members which, contrary to cartel lore, do not all have the same interests.

Fracking is probably a down-the-road threat to OPEC kingpin producer Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
, which will probably continue to see demand for its oil in the foreseeable future, given that its production costs remain low, its reserves are still there, and its management good.

But it's not a small threat to newer producers, such as the Africans, whose light sweet compounds are comparable to current fracking products in the U.S. and therefore are finding themselves confronted with the need to find new ways to compete in global markets.

Yes. Fracking will help to drive down the need for imported oil to the USA but not the price, not just yet. See yesterdays and the day before discussions on oil in Rantburg.

I think we need some music here to keep from weeping from the other news that shows America under Obama as tyranny, like none seen before.

Four swindlers arrested
[Dawn] Four persons were incarcerated
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
, who in the guise of Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) officers swindled people out of money.

The police got a clue to the gang of impersonators during investigation of a kidnapping case.

In the case two kidnappers gave the details of their accomplices involved in cheating.

The arrest also resulted in the recovery of armed forces uniform and forged service cards.

The team also recovered fake currency notes of three million dollars, which the arrested person prepared with the help of his accomplices.

In response, a team was constituted by SP (Saddar) Mohammad Jameel Hashmi which raided Awan Plaze in G-8 Markaz and arrested the persons.

During the search the raiding team also recovered boxes filled with fake dollar notes, paper used in making dollars, wireless sets, uniform of armed forces, imported seals of US government, and service cards and letterheads of ISI along with chemicals.

Later the arrestees and the recoveries were handed over to cop shoppe.

TI accuses Fauzia Kasuri of leveling "false allegations"
[BETA.DAWN] The Pakistain Tehrik-e-Insaf
...a political party in Pakistan. PTI was founded by former Pakistani cricket captain and philanthropist Imran Khan. The party's slogan is Justice, Humanity and Self Esteem, each of which is open to widely divergent interpretations....
(PTI) on Thursday issued "factual clarification" regarding grounds on which Fauzia Kasuri took the decision of parting ways with the PTI and accused her of leveling "false allegations" against its leadership.
"The charge that we lie through our teeth is absolutely false!"
The clarification, issued on the PTI's official website, said the party has highest regards regarding efforts she had made for the party. However,
man does not live by words alone, despite the fact that sometimes he has to eat them...
it added that it was the party's right to clarify some "erroneous" statements made by Kasuri lately.

Announcing her decision at a presser in Islamabad on Wednesday, she had alleged that the Tehrik-e-Insaf has been "held hostage by a mafia."

In a point by point clarification, the party not only denied her claim of being a founding member of the PTI but also revealed that Fauzia Kasuri failed to abandon her US nationality in time to contest the intra-party elections, held on March 21.

The party later refused to hold intra-party polls again according to rules and regulations upon Kasuri's demand of a re-election to accommodate her.

The clarification further said that Kasuri was satisfied with the fourth place she was placed on the PTI women priority list in Punjab for the National Assembly, finalised on March 31.

It said expectation was that the PTI would win enough NA seats in Punjab to accommodate a number of the women on the priority list.

It was only after the election results came out when Fauzia Kasuri started her "campaign of maligning the party and the women selected by the leadership for the reserved seats," the clarification added.

Diversity speakers get hostile reception in Tennessee
The event was sponsored by the American Muslim Advisory Council of Tennessee (AMAC). The group was started two years ago when Tennessee's legislature was considering a bill that would have made following sharia law a felony, with a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison.

The AMAC invited U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Tennessee Bill Killian and Kenneth Moore, a special agent in charge of the FBI’s Knoxville Division, to speak about the line between free speech and hate speech, as well as how the Muslim community has helped in law enforcement investigations.

AMAC member Zak Mohyuddin, said a recent Facebook post by Coffee County Commissioner Barry West “catalyzed” the meeting, but that the gathering was not being held to address West’s actions specifically. Weeks ago, West posted a photo of a man pointing a gun at a camera with a caption reading, “How to wink at a Muslim.” The county commissioner removed the photo and apologized, but not before the story went viral.

The first several speakers were interrupted sporadically by protesters, including a cheer from some in the crowd when Sabina Mohyuddin showed a photo of a mosque in Columbia, Tenn. that was burned down in 2008. Throughout the meeting, many in the audience tried, with little success, to quiet the hecklers.

Killian received the most hostile reaction from the protestors, some of whom shouted “traitor,” “why are you here” and demanded his resignation just seconds into his remarks.

#1  ..to speak about the line between free speech and hate speech

Anything that supports the agendas of the Left or anti-Americaism is obviously free speech, to include violence.

Everything else is hate speech. Particularly, the Truth.

#2  The citizens of Middle Tennessee weren't too receptive to more talk of diversity and acceptance of Islam. Our local newspaper reported the participants yelled "Snakes and Traitors" referring to the participating Feds. Sharia Law is not very popular in the "Bible Belt." Thank goodness.

#3  The article is massively misleading. It was NOT about 'diversity'; it was about Federal agents trying to criminalize / threaten prosecution for criticizing Muslims; what used to be known as free speech. The 'reporter' should be bitch-slapped for the deceptive headline.
