For a lot of these old studio photos (in the days before 'flash'), the subjects had to be still for up to a minute or more for the exposure as the film was so slow. Flash powder (made of a metallic fuel and an oxidizer like chlorate) was available, but rarely used indoors, for obvious reasons.
Smiles are hard to hold steady for that long, so the photographers usually had their subjects look aside with a relaxed facial expression. Some folk's natural expression is to look bored, angry or 'stoned'.

AL QAEDA IN AFGHANISTAN – Sources have since come forward after previous reporting indicated that select elements of the Taliban were assisting Al Qaeda militants staying in Afghanistan to find safer housing options. The two primary sources reported to AMU TV that the Taliban had responded to panicked requests for assistance from leaders of the group in the wake of the US drone attack which killed their former leader. The sources said the Taliban had successfully relocated many of the affiliates to Baghlan Province where they are reputedly living openly.
SMALLPOX OUTBREAK TICKS UP IN AFGHANISTAN – Baghlan Province and other areas are reporting an uptick in the number of cases of small pox they are seeing among residents. Children appear to be those primarily affected. At-risk Afghans are encouraged to continue practicing distancing and hygiene protocols to lower their chances of contracting the disease.
TALIBAN DISRUPTS AFGHANISTAN WOMEN’S MOVEMENT PRESS CONFERENCE – A planned press conference by the Afghanistan Women’s Movement was broken up by Taliban security forces in western Kabul. It is believed that leaders of the movement were to deliver a message of support for the Women of Iran as well as call on Afghan civil society to do more for gender rights in the country. Several of the women and girls were reputedly beaten and taken away before the media event could take place. There has been no word on how many were arrested and where they were taken too.

[Rudaw] The Kenya Defense Forces [KDF] in collaboration with Somalia security forces have managed to rescue three people who were kidnapped by al-Shabaab ...... the Islamic version of the old Somali warlord... hard boyz while taking a patient to Lafey Sub County Hospital in northeastern Kenya, following a spirited search operation.
The three people were among the four who wrote kidnapped by the hard boyz in Lafey before being taken across the border. They were traveling in an ambulance at the time of the abduction triggering a massive security search in the region.
Onesmus Kyatha, the Mandera County Commissioner, confirmed the incident while noting that the three who have been freed following negotiations will likely return to Kenya on Thursday [today] or on Friday but it was not immediately clear where they were being held.
"Arrangements have been made to bring back the three Kenyans from Somalia. They will most likely return home today or tomorrow." The Mandera County ambulance attached to Lyfey Health Centre had four occupants, including medics during the early night attack.
According to the Commissioner, the fourth occupant of the vehicle, who was actually the driver, is still under the custody of al-Shabaab krazed killers. The three are Moulid Abdi [a patient], his relative Aden Dai, and Lafey hospital paramedic Abdirashid Billow Hussein.
Some reports indicate that the driver was the one who drove with instructions from the hard boyz to the hideouts. Head of Ambulance Services in Mandera County, Fatima Noor revealed that the vehicle was ambushed at Kurkura village near Elwak along Lafey road.
Al-Shabaab hard boyz have been kidnapping people while asking for ransom, which is used to help the group run operations. Northeastern Kenya has been a hotspot of the hard boyz but the Kenya security forces have managed to secure most parts of the border.

The reports from the area indicate that al-Shabaab turbans were driven out of the base during the confrontation that lasted for several hours.
The local militia received support from the Somali military that helped to overpower the al-Shabaab fighters, according to the sources.
[ShabelleMediat] A morning explosion occurred in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, just five days after twin boom-mobiles killed more than 120 people at the busy Zoobe junction.
Thursday’s blast resulted from an improvised bomb [IED] that was reported to have hit a military vehicle carrying the bodyguards of Mogadishu’s deputy mayor Ali Yare.
Ali Yare who is in charge of the security affairs of the Benadir regional administration was not with the convoy at the time of the earth-shattering kaboom.
Several of his security guards were maimed in the attack in the Deynile district, according to the residents.
The situation at the place where the blast took place is now stable, and security forces have arrived and conducted a brief investigation there. No arrests were made so far.

Last week, the court executed three gunnies who were convicted of various crimes, including coordination of attacks across the country. The execution was carried out by the famous firing squad, a contingent within the Somali National Army [SNA] which is given such responsibilities.
According to the military court, the Thursday gunnies were executed having been convicted of killing security personnel. Execution has been part of the strategy to eliminate the gunnies from the country, but they still dominate most parts of the country including northeastern Kenya.
Those killed on Thursday morning are Abdulle Ahmed Mudey, 24, and Omar Adan Mohammed, 29. They were convicted for assassinating two security officers in 2019 and the military court has turned down their appeals, warranting their immediate execution by firing squad.
This brings the number of gunnies executed in recent days to 10. The country has heightened the crackdown against the al-Shabaab hard boys, mainly targeting their bases in central and southern Somalia. In recent days, there have been crackdowns in Galgaduud, Hiiraan, and Bay regions.

Arif, a Pakistain national, was held guilty of murder, criminal conspiracy, and waging war against the country. The bench concluded there is nothing on record which can be taken to be a mitigating circumstance in favour of the review petitioner.
"The suggestion that there is a possibility of retribution and rehabilitation, is not made out from and supported by any material on record," said Chief Justice Lalit, who authored the judgment on behalf of the bench.
The Chief Justice said in conclusion, it must therefore be observed that even after eschewing circumstances, which were directly attributable to the CDRs relied upon by the prosecution, the other circumstances on record do clearly spell out and prove beyond any doubt the involvement of the review petitioner in the crime in question.
Referring to judgment in Mohd Ajmal Amir Kasab case (2008 Mumbai terror attack) (2012), the bench said: "when there is challenge to the unity, integrity and illusory sovereignty of India by acts of terrorism, such acts are taken as the most aggravating circumstances. It is well accepted that the cumulative effect of the aggravating factors and the mitigating circumstances must be taken into account before the death sentence ...the barbaric practice of sentencing a murderer to be punished for as long as his/her/its victim is dead... is awarded."
The bench noted that there were other circumstances, including a disclosure statement by the convict, which led to an encounter at Batla house and killing of Abu Shamal alias Faisal, which went against the convict.
"The disclosure statement led the police to the hideout at G-73, Batla House, New Delhi and when the police team arrived with the review petitioner, there was firing upon the police team.. After the person concerned named Abu Shamal alias Faisal died in the encounter, certain firearms and ammunition were recovered. The submission that such recovery of ammunition or the encounter of Abu Shamal could not be associated with the disclosure statement of the review petitioner is not quite correct," said the bench.
In the Red Fort attack, three people, including two Army jawans, were killed.

At least one person lost his life and two others were maimed on Thursday in a Ottoman Turkish-suspected dronezap of the city center of Sinjar (Shengal) in the Kurdistan region of Iraq (KRI).
A local source told North Press that a drone, likely to be Ottoman Turkish, targeted a military vehicle this evening in the city of Shengal in the Kurdistan region of Iraq.
He added that the four-wheel drive military vehicle belonged to the Sinjar Resistance® Units (YBS).
The YBS, which is a predominantly Yezidi force, was formed in 2014 to drive out ISIS members from the area after the withdrawal of the Iraqi army. Since then, it has remained a powerful local force in the area.
The same area witnessed several Ottoman Turkish air raids, targeting fighters in the YBS, the last of which was on October 11.
At least three fighters affiliated with the anti-Ankara Kurdistan's Workers Party (PKK) died in an aerial attack in Nineveh's district of Sinjar, a source revealed on Thursday.
The source told Shafaq News Agency that a Ottoman Turkish Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAV) bombed a vehicle carrying a group of PKK fighters in al-Nasr neighborhood, west of Sinjar.
