No One Wants to Call it a "Sniper"
No one wants to use the term "sniper." The word has some fairly ugly connotations in the Washington area. But someone took a shot at a dump truck rolling down northbound Interstate 395 in the Alexandria area yesterday morning, piercing a passenger-side window and driving a shard of glass into the driver's right arm, state police said. The driver was not seriously hurt.
The cops were looking in my building yesterday, and I heard the cops on my roof. If I lived in Toledo, Ohio, this would certainly be 'local'. But in DC, the home of the converted-muslim snipers that killed ten people a three years ago, well.... this might be the start of something larger. I certainly hope not.
In October 2002, a sniper shot 13 people, 10 fatally, over a three-week period in the Washington region. None of the victims was in a moving vehicle. The shootings caused schools to lock down, events to be canceled and fear to dominate the area, before John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo were arrested.
On a fluke. Cops questioned him about sleeping in his car, but missed the small hole in the trunk where the rifle barrel protruded.

Coulda been local gun sex, I suppose....

Thx for the story, Bobby, and let's keep an eye on this one. AoS.

#1  On a fluke. Cops questioned him about sleeping in his car, but missed the small hole in the trunk where the rifle barrel protruded.

They weren't caught on a fluke. The investigation tied JAM to shootings in another state, they were able to identify him, and determine what kind of car he was driving, and put out a BOLO. This BOLO was broadcast nationwide. A truck driver at a rest area spotted the vehicle, in which JAM and LBM were sleeping. They called in the SWAT team and sprung on them while they were still sleeping at the rest area. This was good, solid investigative work that paid off...not a fluke.

#2  Technically, the 2002 snipers weren't locals. They came to town from Washington State specifically to terrorize JAM's ex-wife. And no, I'm not too happy about a reprise. Didn't like looking over my shoulder at gas stations four years ago, don't wanna go through it again. Plus it gives more ammo to the gun-grabbers.

Famous(?) WWII sailor beats off house burglars
Two stories related to this man--This is the current story:
Former U.S. Navy sailor Carl Muscarello, who became famous from a Life magazine photo of him kissing a nurse, thwarted a burglary at his Florida home. The Miami Herald reported that the 80-year-old, whose kiss in New York City's Times Square on V-J Day in 1945 became one of the most famous photographs of World War II, scared off one burglar at his Plantation home last Tuesday and held another until police arrived.

Upon discovering two burglars in his house, the former police detective promptly attacked one and restrained him while his fellow intruder ran out the front door. "I jumped on this man's back and put a chokehold on him. I was surprised I could do it," Muscarello said. The intruder was attacking his stepson with a golf club.

Yet the former sailor was humble regarding his actions last week and in Alfred Eisenstaedt photograph, a moment he reenacted last year with his wife Shelly for their 60th anniversary. "I often happen to be at a strange place at a strange time," he told the Herald.
It's not been established beyond reasonable doubt that he *is* that particular sailor, that's another story however.

Woman dragged to death behind car, leaving mile-long blood trail
Edited for brevity.
A woman was tied to a vehicle with a rope and dragged through suburban streets in a gruesome crime that left a trail of blood more than a mile long, police said. Neighbors discovered the woman's body before dawn Monday about 20 miles south of Denver. On Tuesday, sheriff's deputies were still trying to learn her identity.

The victim's face was unrecognizable and an orange tow rope was found around her neck, said Nancy Foley, who lives next door to the house where the body was found. Preliminary autopsy results indicated the woman died of asphyxiation and head injuries from being strangled while dragged by a vehicle, sheriff's spokeswoman Kim Castellano said. Toxicology results could take three weeks.

#11  UPDATE: Suspect in custody--

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office announced an arrest this morning in the death of a woman dragged behind a vehicle for a mile on a rural roadway. Jose Luis Rubi-Nava, 36, of Glendale, was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder. He is the man pictured in a photograph found near where the woman was dragged which was distributed to local news media when the sheriff asked for help in the investigation. Rubi-Nava is a suspected illegal immigrant.

#14  I snark, therefore I am.

I don't know how many of you here write your own comedy material. I do and I've performed it publically. Try doing it sometime, you might be surprised. Writing a good joke that no one has ever heard before is far more difficult than you probably imagine.

Conrad Hyers said that comedy expresses a "stubborn refusal to give tragedy...the final say." For further insight, I refer you to the American Bard, Samuel Langhorne Clemens:

Everything human is pathetic. The secret source of Humor itself is not joy but sorrow. There is no humor in heaven.

#20  Arrest made in Colo. dragging death
A man was arrested in the gruesome dragging death of a woman after a stained and tattered photograph of him was found at the crime scene, police said Wednesday.

Jose Luis Rubi-Nava, 36, was arrested Tuesday night on suspicion of murder and jailed without bail. Investigators said they were still trying to identify the victim, who was dragged behind a vehicle with a rope, leaving a trail of blood more than a mile long.
...
Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman Carl Rusnok said agents believe Rubi-Nava is an illegal immigrant from Mexico.

Guess the victim was also Mexican.

Panda Bites Drunken Man so Drunken Man Bites Panda
BEIJING - A drunken Chinese migrant worker jumped into a panda enclosure at the Beijing Zoo, was bitten by the bear and retaliated by chomping down on the animal’s back, state media said Wednesday.

Zhang Xinyan, from the central province of Henan, drank four jugs of beer at a restaurant near the zoo before visiting Gu Gu the panda on Tuesday, the Beijing Morning Post said.

“He felt a sudden urge to touch the panda with his hand,” and jumped into the enclosure, the newspaper said.

The panda, who was asleep, was startled and bit Zhang, 35, on the right leg, it said. Zhang got angry and kicked the panda, who then bit his other leg. A tussle ensued, the paper said.

“I bit the fellow in the back,” Zhang was quoted as saying in the newspaper. “Its skin was quite thick.”

Other tourists yelled for a zookeeper, who got the panda under control by spraying it with water, reports said. Zhang was hospitalized.

Newspaper photographs showed Zhang lying on a hospital bed with blood-soaked bandages and a seam of stitches running down his leg.

‘No one ever said they would bite’
The Beijing Youth Daily quoted Zhang as saying that he had seen pandas on television and “they seemed to get along well with people.”

“No one ever said they would bite people,” Zhang said. “I just wanted to touch it. I was so dizzy from the beer. I don’t remember much.”

Ye Mingxia, a spokeswoman for the Beijing Zoo, confirmed the incident happened but would not give any details. She said Gu Gu was “healthy.”

“We’re not considering punishing him now,” Ye said in a telephone interview. “He’s suffered quite a bit of shock.”

#4  A panda walks into a bar and orders a beer with a ham sandwich.
A waiter brings the sandwich and the bartender pours the panda his beer.
The bartender says, "We don't get too many pandas here."
The panda says, "And at these prices you won't get many more." [rimshot]
The panda harfs his sandwich in one bite and gulps down the beer in a single swallow.
He gets up off of the stool and heads for the door.
The waiter comes running up to the panda exclaiming, "But wait, you haven't paid for the sandwich and beer!"
The panda draws and fires a 9mm straight through the waiter's heart.
The bartender runs up and asks, "Why did you shoot the waiter, he wasn't going to hurt you?"
The panda waves around the 9mm pistol and as the bartender backs off, the panda replies, "I'm a panda, look it up in the dictionary!"
The bartender goes back to his office and looks up "panda" in the dictionary.

Divers explore underwater 1935 wreck site of USS Macon dirigible
Hat tip: Murdoc Online. Photos and other links--including live video feed from the exploration through 21.Sept--at link above. Edited for brevity.
USS Macon (ZRS-5) was a rigid frame airship built and operated by the United States Navy for scouting. In service for less than two years, in 1935 Macon was damaged in a storm and lost off the coast of California.

On February 12, 1935 when a repair process was still incomplete, Macon, returning to Sunnyvale from fleet maneuvers, ran into a storm off Point Sur, California. During the storm, she was caught in a sudden updraft which caused structural failure of her unstrengthened upper tail fin. Trailing cables punctured the rear gas cells and the resulting gas leakage prompted a discharge of ballast. Control was lost and, tail heavy and with engines running, the Macon rose past the pressure height and kept going until enough helium was vented to cancel the lift. It took her 20 minutes to descend from 4,850 ft and, settling gently to the sea, Macon sank off the California coast. Only two crewmembers from her complement of 76 died, thanks to the warm conditions and the introduction of life jackets and inflatable rafts.

Today all that remains of the Macon and the four warplanes carried in its massive belly are ruins scattered on the seafloor- a historic site that is being intensively explored for the first time in a five-day expedition that started Sunday.

#1  The "airdock" she was built in is still standing on the south side of Akron.
Posted by: Mike || 09/20/2006 15:34 Comments || Top||

#2  True story about the airdock: I was a USAF recruiter in Akron from 89-93. One of my jobs was handling USAF Academy applications, and my Liason officer for that was a Reserve LtCol who worked for Loral Aerospace, the successors for Goodyear-Zeppelin, which built Macon . He knew my interest in history and asked if I'd like to see the Airdock up close, and of course I jumped for it.
First I toured the 1910 airdock which is almost hidden by the larger structure, and then we went into the Airdock itself. We went in through a side exit - the south doors are now blocked - and my guide asked me to specifically NOT speak of what I would see when I went through the door, saying that it was probably the most classified thing at Loral those days. I was utterly mystified until I went through and saw, of all things, the original full-size shuttlecraft prop from Star Trek - the lady who had bought it and was restoring it was from Akron, and that was the most secure place she could find in Akron to store and put it back together. A couple years later, I was there again for one of Richard Branson's around-the-world balloon flight attempts.
