Cuntan Hydrology Station Record Flood
[ST Daily] At 4:00 a.m. on August 20, 2020, the water level of the Cuntan Hydrology Station of the River Upstream Hydrological Resources Survey Bureau of the Yangtze River Water Conservancy exceeded 191.41 meters, with a maximum flow of 74,600 cubic meters per second. At 8:15 a.m. on August 20, a flood peak appeared at the Cuntan Hydrology Station, with a water level of 191.62 meters and 8.12 meters above the guaranteed level, the highest flood level since the station was built in 1939.

Flow into Three Gorges Reservoir Hits Record

Science and Technology Daily reporter Tang Ting Correspondent Zheng Li: The reporter learned from the Water Bureau of the Yangtze River Water Commission of the Ministry of Water Resources that the storage flow of the Three Gorges Reservoir rose to 72,000 cubic meters per second at 12:00 on August 19. Previously, the maximum storage flow of the Three Gorges Reservoir was 71,200 cubic meters per second on July 24, 2012. It is predicted that the Three Gorges Reservoir will have a storage flood peak of 75,000 cubic meters per second on August 20. Under the influence of strong rainfall, the upper tributaries of the Yangtze River, Minjiang, Tuojiang, and Jialing River all suffered from overinsurance and above floods. Currently, Minjiang and Tuojiang have all been turned back, and Jialing River is passing the peak. The upper reaches of the Yangtze River include Luzhou, Zhu Tuo and in-Tan stations with a guaranteed water level.

#1  Affected by the recent continued rainfall in Sichuan and Chongqing, the "Yangtze River No.5 Flood of 2020" was formed upstream. Given the high volume and long duration of the upstream water peak, the flood prevention and prevention response of Yichang City was activated at 10:00 on August 19. At 8:00 on August 20, the three gorges inbound flow reached 75,000 cubic meters per second and the lower discharge flow reached 49,200 cubic meters per second. This was the largest storage flood encountered since the Three Gorges warehouse. The three gorges hub opened 11 holes of flood. In order to cope with this inbound flood, we should carry out scheduling of peaking fault peaks and ensuring the safety of flood prevention downstream. The water level in the three-gorges reservoir in the preceding period fell to 153.03 meters from 163.36 meters at 8:30 on July 29, the water level in the reservoir fell by more than 10 meters, and the reserve flood protection store had a capacity of nearly 17.8 billion cubic meters, accounting for 80 percent of its flood protection reservoir Affected by the increase of the lower leakage of the Three Gorges, the three Gorges, the The Yichang Hydrology Station of Gezhouba Engineering Export Station at 2200 on August 19 raised the water level to 53.12 meters, corresponding flow rate of 49,700 cubic meters per second. For the first time since the Three Gorges Reservoir was built, the water level exceeded the warning level of 53.00 meters. The night before the arrival of the flood peak, the tense flood situation affected the hearts of every three-gorges hydrodic. The arrangements and discussions of the work group of the Three Gorges Bureau on the inspection and reporting work are tense and orderly. Director Li Yunzong and cadres and staff members pay close attention to the changes in the water and rain situation and the plan for the control of the water and water, and arrange for the deployment of hydrographic survey and safe flood control work. The Water Prediction Department is lit up, and the predators have rolled into meetings to forecast the water and sand situation. They have closely communicated and coordinated with the Water and Hydrology Bureau of the Yangtze River Commission, the Three Gorges Ladder and the Yichang Prevention Office, and other hydrology departments, and have actively done a good job in supporting the monitoring and reporting information. The information on the screen of computers about rain and water is constantly updated, and the voices of research and analysis are constantly exchanged. They use their own practical actions to convey a persistent commitment. According to the research estimate, the three isthmus inbound flow will reach 75,000 cubic meters per second on August 20 at 8:00, and the flood peak will arrive in the morning, and the inbound flow will almost be no worse than the forecast.

Movers in N.Y.C. Are So Busy They're Turning People Away
[DNYUZ] While the work can be merciless, movers are busy this season, and glad of it.

For Mr. Grigor and his colleagues, it is fair to say this summer has been like no other. Not only is he having to meet the strenuous physical demands of his job during a steamy summer, but he is also having to do so while abiding by the new rules of social distancing.

On top of these challenges is just how overworked movers are. “It’s nuts out there,” Mr. Grigor said. “There is double the volume of customers — maybe more — than last year.”

While the moving industry is fractured among numerous small business owners, and official statistics are tough to come by, one thing is clear: From professionals who are downsizing following a job loss, to students moving back in with their parents, to families fleeing the city for the suburbs, New Yorkers are changing their addresses in droves.

According to FlatRate Moving, the number of moves it has done has increased more than 46 percent between March 15 and August 15, compared with the same period last year. The number of those moving outside of New York City is up 50 percent — including a nearly 232 percent increase to Dutchess County and 116 percent increase to Ulster County in the Hudson Valley.

Michigan to pay $600 mln to Flint water crisis victims
[Jpost] The US state of Michigan has reached a settlement to pay about $600 million to victims of the Flint water crisis, the state's attorney general and its governor announced on Thursday.

Most of the amount will be allocated for children who suffered from lead-tainted tapwater after officials switched the city's water supply six years ago, the state's attorney general, Dana Nessel, said in a statement. The settlement is subject to approval by a federal judge in Michigan.

In January, the Supreme Court let Flint residents pursue a civil rights lawsuit that accused the city and government officials of knowingly allowing the water supply to become contaminated with lead.

Flint switched its public water source from Lake Huron to the Flint River to cut costs during a financial crisis. But the corrosive river water caused lead to leach from pipes, and the city switched back to Lake Huron water the following year.
More than 25,000 people were harmed through exposure to contaminants in Flint, including more than 5,000 children younger than 12, court records showed as of January.

Iran sentences pastor, wife to prison for security crime of 'Evangelism'
[Jpost] Many Christians remain in Iranian prisons rife with COVID-19.

A pastor and his wife have lost their appeals against prison sentences for national security-related crimes in Iran, including "conducting Evangelism," NGO Christian Solidarity Woldwide (CSW) reported Monday.

Iranian courts have sentenced Pastor Victor Bet-Tamraz to 10 years in prison for "conducting Evangelism" and "illegal house church activities," while his wife Shamiram Isavi was given a five-year sentence for "membership of a group with the purpose of disrupting national security" and "gathering and colluding to commit crimes against national security." As noted by CSW, these charges seem more similar to normal church activities, rather than issues of national security.

New COVID-19 cases in Orthodox communities elicit concern as High Holidays near
[Arutz 7] - Over the past week, the reports have come fast and furious.

One overnight sports camp for boys in Pennsylvania had an outbreak of COVID-19, sending eight boys back to their home communities on Long Island and several more to Baltimore, where others had contracted the virus after attending weddings or coming into contact with those who did.

Bungalow colonies in the Catskill Mountains saw an outbreak among families, many of whom were summering there away from their homes in Brooklyn.

And New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Wednesday that 16 new cases were found in the Brooklyn Hasidic neighborhood of Borough Park, with some traced back to a large wedding there.

As the summer comes to a close and families prepare for a new school year and the High Holidays, government officials and leaders in the Orthodox community are monitoring new cases in Orthodox communities across the New York City area and down the East Coast. They say the cases, though small in number at the moment, could spiral out of control, derailing plans to reopen schools with in-person instruction and hold in-person services for the holidays.

Left unchecked, the increasing cases also have the potential to turn next month’s gatherings in schools and synagogues into superspreader events, reversing the progress made over the past few months.

"It has the potential to be a perfect storm," said Rabbi Dr. Aaron Glatt, the chief of infectious diseases and hospital epidemiologist at Mount Sinai South Nassau on Long Island and an assistant rabbi at the Young Israel of Woodmere, a large Orthodox synagogue in Long Island’s Nassau County. "The question everyone has to ask themselves is: Is not wearing a mask that critical that they’re willing to risk everything?"
de Blasio may be an Anti-Semite but not because his covid relations with the Hasidim community. We have exactly the same problem in Israel - Hasidim as a group ignore coronavirus instruction. And, as a result, contribute disproportionately to severe & lethal coronavirus cases.

AI pilot shoots down F16 Top Gun to win first ever USAF dogfight simulator competition as human pilot says he can't cope with the robot's aggressive tactics and warns 'the things we do as fighter pilots aren't working'

#1  I'll be more impressed when an AI pilot survives long enough to make it to the merge.

#2  The AI doesn't worry about blacking out due to G-Force, either.

#3  Hopefully, there'll be true lessons learned from this that'll aid the human pilots.

#4  It was inevitable once the Fly-By-Wire aircraft became practical. The biggest problem is Target Recognition -- what happens when IFF (Identify Friend/Foe) goes 'wonky'...?

This eliminates sooo much trouble.

You get a Jamie Foxx movie, and all humanity suffers.

#10  Competition had the human pilot in a VR suite, which is interesting because although not a real life scenario in actual flying vehicles, the human was not restricted by g-forces.

To be fair, the AI has the entire recorded flight combat history to work off of, the human has no versus AI training. Also, the current weapon systems are designed for versus human opponent.
Posted by: swksvolFF || 08/21/2020 18:34 Comments || Top||

#11  The "real war" is ECM Vs. ECCM. If you can mess with the AI drone's sensor package, and/or a human engaging beyond visual range, then things get nasty. In this sort of (quote) test (un-quote) I would bet on the AI every time.

#1  When people remark on the horrible (compared to the rest of industrialized world) covid numbers in USA, I tell them that it's an unfair comparison. USA is in the middle of civil war - with both sides using covid as a club to beat their opposition.

#15  Over at Instapundit today -

WHAT MYSTERY? Denver doctors may have found the answer to a pandemic mystery: What happened to all the heart attacks? “Stauffer’s team found that cardiac arrests at home in Denver more than doubled in the two weeks after the statewide stay-at-home order was issued compared with historical averages. Even compared with more recent data, the weekly average of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests jumped to 46 during those two weeks, versus 26 or 27 in the three months prior.”

Seriously, what mystery?

Plus: “Stauffer and his colleagues found that the number of people in Denver who died of cardiac arrests at home in the two weeks following the statewide stay-at-home order was greater than the total number of people who died of COVID-19 in the city during that time.

How many of them could have been saved had they made it to an ER?

It's all trade offs . Death is a pie chart. Shift a border one way it only expands in another.
Posted by: Procopius2k || 08/21/2020 10:40 Comments || Top||

#16  The trade off: If you go out during COVID someone "might get sick" assuming you have it. If you need to be in a CCU ward and aren't allowed to go, you won't get anyone else sick, but you will probably die.

To make someone feel good about their novel religion. Nothing more.

Because statistics.

#27  It's a classic gummint racket. They can decide if you do or do not have a livelihood. Inn't it interesting that all these professional rioters aren't going hungry. Let's hear about their income sources. I know some are trustafarians (spit) but not all of them.
Posted by: M. Murcek || 08/21/2020 17:07 Comments || Top||

#28  Right there with you rjschwarz.

I figure 90% of the information is bullshit, so I'm looking at supporting evidence, such as CHAZ is not a plague ward. Tulsa has not been quarantined. The Hudson is not choked with bodies. Sweden is not littered with cruise ships turned into plague wards. China is throwing mega-parties.

I believe it is in Oleg Atbashian's book Shakedown Socialism where he recounts figuring what Pravda said, what they left out, and what evidence is about in order to learn the real news.

Here, not even the 'out there' sites mention anything about trains full of bodies leaving the cities, freighters full of bodies being sunk out to sea. Real life happenings of Airplane! China cloud seeding the Yangtze flooding as cover for the elites to evacuate to doomsday bunkers.

Anecdotally, people I come across who have had it or been around it are like, "Yeah, it sucked, but no more than the crud going around last December." Obviously that is a smaller sample than somebody living in NY or NJ, but considering people telling fish stories, I'll keep to those I know and trust to be accurate. Seattle hospitals have gone from space suits to where's the patients? People not only keep showing up to work, they are begging to work - if the packing plants were rife with the China Plague people would stop going to work. Sturgis bikers of course have access to the internet, six months in an they are like, yeah whatever virus because they well connected travelers and bards checked the weather and concluded fair conditions.

And the flu chic people are people I didn't trust on a good day - government, entertainment, big corporation. The attitude of flu chic has lead to the justification of morality police, which media time and again brushes off of necessary 'In these trying times' as the TV advertisers like to preach, happy as clams that people are being forced to stay home and watch their shows about intense news and 11 year old girls twerking and scissoring.

#32  I found this interesting.

The take-aways:
1. Americans still misperceive the risks of death from COVID-19 for different age cohorts—to a shocking extent; (they think it's far worse than it is)
2. The misperception is greater for those who identify as Democrats,
