-Short Attention Span Theater-
Man in Malaysia Bitten By Crocodile during Toilet Break
[An Nahar] A construction worker was bitten by a crocodile while pooping during a toilet break in a river in Malaysian Borneo, but fought off the huge reptile and escaped with his life.

Pai punched the two-meter (6.5-foot) crocodile in the eye after it bit him in the ass just above his right buttock, and despite being in incredible pain and soaked in blood managed to summon help, reports said Saturday.

The attack happened early Friday, when the 32-year-old decided to take his chances in the river in Sarawak state despite knowing it was infested with crocodiles.

The laborer, an Indonesian who works at a nearby construction site, had just finished relieving himself under a bridge when the animal bit him from behind.

"Fortune favored me when the crocodile let go after I punched it in the eye," he was quoted by Malay tabloid Harian Metro as saying.

"After being freed from the jaws of the crocodile, I found extraordinary strength to run and call for help even though my waist was extremely painful."

Several newspapers ran pictures of Pai, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, lying on his stomach at the Sarawak General Hospital with bandages on his waist and hip area.

According to The Star newspaper, he also suffered puncture wounds on the left side of his ribs.

These rare bear-on-human attacks usuall seem to happen in late Summer and Fall. Generally the grizzlies are getting hungry at that time to put fat on their bodies - preparing for hibernation. Not a good time for tourists to pretend they are Natl Geo photographers.

Typhoon Bolaven Edges Towards Okinawa
Tokyo: Typhoon Bolaven was Sunday edging closer to the southern Japanese island of Okinawa, bringing downpours accompanied by strong winds to the region, the Meteorological Agency said.

Stormy weather travelling ahead of Typhoon Bolaven, the 15th of the season, had already engulfed Okinawa and nearby islands, the agency said, warning of record rains and waves up to 12 metres.

All flights to and from Naha, the capital of Okinawa, and ships linking the island with others were cancelled, Kyodo said.

A lot of people use that logical meme but its basically wrong.

Yes, the 48 hour forecast may be dead wrong but nonetheless we can say with certainty that winter will be colder than summer.

Similarly, we may fail to predict the crumbling of a retaining wall but we can accurately predict the position of planets and asteriods.

Africa Subsaharan
Checkpoint Attack Kills I. Coast Soldier, Five Assailants
[An Nahar] A solider and five assailants were on Saturday killed when a military checkpoint came under attack in southern Ivory Coast, a military source said, in the latest of a series of assaults.

"A checkpoint of the Republican Force (army) was attacked late morning at Irobo by men in a pick-up. A soldier was killed, another was injured and transferred to Abidjan. Five attackers were killed," the source told Agence La Belle France Presse.

The attack took place near Grand-Lahou 140 kilometers west of the economic capital Abidjan.

A string of recent attacks targeting the army have sparked a sharp rise in tension more than a year after the post-electoral crisis of December 2010 to April 2011 claimed 3,000 lives.

New Zealand art exhibit bans men
A video display in a New Zealand art gallery will exclude men because it shows Muslim women without veils. The ban in an exhibition due to open next month is discrimination, a lawyer says.

The Dowse Art Museum is hosting the world premiere of an art installation including a video by Qatari writer and film-maker Sophia Al-Maria called Cinderazahd: For Your Eyes Only. It shows women getting ready for a wedding without wearing hijabs, or veils.

Museum director Cam McCracken earlier said Al-Maria's work would be off-limits to men in keeping with the artist's wishes. He said, "I haven't seen the work, and I won't. I've bought into the fact that we take this work on the proviso that no men see it. We respect the artist and the privacy of the women who are portrayed."

Nicholai Anderson, a senior associate at the law firm Chen Palmer, said that banning men would be unlawful discrimination by the museum and the people displaying the work. He said people had rights to their own religious beliefs "but at the same time under the laws of New Zealand to not admit someone because of the sex they are is unlawful."

In a statement, Al-Maria said that images should be treated as privileged and private, for women's eyes only.

McCracken said the work would probably be screened in a small curtained-off area behind the gallery's reception, not usually open to the public.
