Illegal Coffee Making At Home While Nude
A Springfield, Virginia man is facing an indecent exposure charge after a passerby spotted the man naked in his kitchen and reported it to police.

Eric Williamson, 29, is a commercial diver who grew up in Hawaii and rents home with several co-workers. Williamson told FOX 5's Will Thomas his roommates were not home and he walked into the kitchen to make coffee about 5:30 a.m. Monday.

"Yes, I wasn't wearing any clothes but I was alone, in my own home and just got out of bed. It was dark and I had no idea anyone was outside looking in at me," Williamson said.

The complaint came from an unidentified woman who was walking with a 7-year-old boy. A Fairfax County Police spokesman said officers arrested Williamson for indecent exposure because they believe he wanted to be seen naked by the public.

Officer Bud Walker said officers also consulted the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office and they were given the green light to proceed with the charge.

Williamson, who is father of a 5-year old girl, said he feels like the victim.

"I am a loving dad. Any of my friends and anyone knows that and there is not a chance on this planet I would ever, ever, ever do anything like that to a kid," he said.

Williamson is meeting with a lawyer to fight the charge and may attempt to seek damages from Fairfax County Police. If convicted on the misdemeanor charge, he would face up to one year in jail and a $2,000 fine.

#8  In Holland, people live in far closer quarters. I have heard (read?) that it is considered bad manners to pull the curtains closed and equally bad manners to stare inside. Get over it, lady. #9  Old joke:

Police get a call one morning from an old lady in her house. She's complaining that there are naked people in her neighborhood.

Okay, sounds a little strange but the police send an officer who cruises around the neighborhood in a squad car. He doesn't see anything so he drives to the old lady's house. He knocks and when she answers he introduces himself and explains gently that he hasn't seen any naked people in the neighborhood.

"Of course you haven't," the old lady replies. "You aren't using binoculars."

RIP Medal of Honor Recipient Sgt. Leonard B. Keller
Sgt. Leonard B. Keller pulled out of the parking lot of a veterans' association on Sunday in Milton (Fla.), taking a sharp left turn to hit the highway on his Harley.

Something went wrong, and the motorcycle overturned. When Sgt. Keller, 62, died later that day, Florida's loss spoke to the heart of a nation. Keller belonged to one of the most exclusive and distinguished groups in our country--he was (a recipient of) the Medal of Honor.

On May 2, 1967, Keller was serving as a sergeant in Company A, 3rd Battalion, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division. On that day, in the Ap Bac Zone, Republic of Vietnam, Keller and fellow soldier Specialist Four Raymond R. Wright stormed a series of enemy bunkers which were firing on their unit.

For their actions, both Keller and Wright were awarded the Medal of Honor. The medal was formally presented to him on September 19, 1968, by President Lyndon B. Johnson during a ceremony at the White House.

After being discharged from the military in August 1968, Keller married and eventually moved to Florida. His wife was a veteran of the United States Navy, and Keller worked for the Navy in Pensacola.

That halal meatpacker raid? Just immigration irregularities, really
Federal agents investigating possible immigration irregularities conducted raids at a Grundy County meatpacking business and several Chicago locations over the weekend, sources familiar with the probe said Monday.

The FBI's Chicago office confirmed agents took part in the execution of a search warrant Sunday at a First World Management Services plant in Kinsman, northwest of Dwight. FBI spokesman Ross Rice said no arrests were made there. But a source said the owner of the plant, which processes lamb and goat, was taken into custody at his home in Chicago.

Documents and records were taken from the plant and from a Chicago travel agency on West Devon Avenue, also owned by the same person, the source said.

The FBI said the raid at the plant was related to an ongoing federal criminal investigation but declined to elaborate further. The U.S. attorney's office in Chicago declined to comment.
A different slant on the story posted yesterday. And more here, posted by linker in yesterday's comments.
Very little is being reported on a recent raid that resulted in 2 arrests in Chicago. A source in federal law enforcement told Fox Chicago that the case is similar to one that unfolded in New York.

Glenda Johnson saw so many police and plain clothed federal agents on her block that she thought someone had been shot. “The police was so crowded, you couldn’t even walk past. They was in trucks, they was in cars, they was in regular cars. It looked like someone had killed someone,” said Johnson.

That swarm of badges consisted of the FBI, Chicago Police and the Joint Terrorism Task Force. In their sights were two buildings on the 6300 block of North Artesian. People who live in a six flat there say the feds were very interested in its basement, specifically, two storage lockers.

A spokesperson for the FBI confirms a search warrant was executed at the building as part of an ongoing investigation. Glenda Johnson says an FBI agent made the search sound extremely urgent. “They was looking for someone who lives in this building. So I was like ‘what’s the cause?’ They said ‘we don’t want to say yet, but it’s a life and death situation.’ I was like ‘wow,’” said Johnson.
That does not sound like immigration irregularities to me, but I know very little about such things, really.

#5  A source in federal law enforcement told Fox Chicago that the case is similar to one that unfolded in New York.
Zazi had a few cohorts under surveillance and the bomb ingredients never found. The travel agency's records may show who has travelled to Pak training camps lately. The Boston arrest just announced by the DoJ also alleges co-conspirators. From an AP story:
A 27-year-old Massachusetts man has been charged with conspiring with others to support and plan violent jihad in and outside the United States, including terror plots to attack U.S. shopping malls and U.S. military in Iraq.
Federal officials in Boston say Tarek Mehanna of Sudbury worked with others from 2001 to May of 2008 to provide support and resources in a conspiracy to "kill, kidnap, main or injure" people in foreign countries and to kill prominent U.S. politicians.
Mehanna was charged in a complaint with conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists, according to the Department of Justice.
The complaint further alleges that the co-conspirators attempted to radicalize others and inspire each other by, among other things, watching and distributing jihadi videos.
The charges accuse the suspects of talking about their desire to participate in Islamist holy war and of their desire to die on the battlefield.

Army recommends 'birther' for promotion
In a stunning display of latent disrespect for President Barack Obama and a complete disregard for the good order and discipline of the U.S. Armed Forces, the Army has recommended "birther", 1LT Scott Easterling for promotion.

In February of this year, the Tennessee native joined forces with "birther" attorney Orly Taitz and wrote a widely-reported letter calling President Obama a "usurper" and "impostor" because he did not believe the President was a natural-born citizen.

At the time, many believed that 1LT Easterling had jeopardized his career and possibly his freedom for violating the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) which clearly prohibits publicly insulting the integrity of the President of the United States; instead he got an "administrative reprimand", also known as a slap on the wrist.

Here are excerpts from the Army's response to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request submitted on September 23, 2009. The information below was provided by Major Brian J. Chapuran, Staff Judge Advocate for the 3rd Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) based at Fort Knox, Kentucky.
"Our investigation concluded that 1LT Easterling wrote the letter. 1LT Easterling never refuted that conclusion. 1LT Easterling received an administrative reprimand for violation of the UCMJ.

1LT Easterling is currently assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3d Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) in the Support Operations Division.

After this incident and subsequent investigation and action, 1LT Easterling was not involved in any other incidents. As a result, his supervisors recommended him for promotion on his officer evaluation report."
In other words, he's young and impetuous, but a good soldier, and the Army can make use of him. Kudos all around.

#3  Most LT's are young and impetuous. I hope this doesn't follow him to his next promotion board. By that time however, the truth should be out and he'll be a highly respected visionary and author.

#4  ..calling President Obama a "usurper" and "impostor" because he did not believe the President was a natural-born citizen.

I'm not a 'birther'. However, if the IL Donks can break the privacy of Gov. Ryan's sealed divorce decree to destroy his chances for the Senatorial seat then taken by Obama, the 'privacy' of Obama's records is forfeited as well on principle. Since we do not know have 'facts' before us, then the statements by the lieutenant can not be validated or invalidated. Short of a warrant to provide said copy of the certificate in the court of law in due process of the individual's right to defend himself, he remains innocent of any charges.

Kuwaiti women now can travel without consent
KUWAIT CITY: Kuwaiti women will now be able to obtain their own passports and travel without the prior consent of their husbands following a ruling yesterday.

The constitutional court abrogated an article in the 1962 passports law that prevented a woman from getting her own passport without her husband's prior approval. The court said that the article was in violation of a number of provisions in the constitution which guarantee personal freedom and gender equality. The decision came after a Kuwaiti woman complained that her husband had refused to give her and their three children their passports and other personal identification documents so he could prevent them from leaving the country.

S. Korea, Vietnam to upgrade diplomatic ties
HANOI, Oct. 21 (Yonhap) -- South Korean President Lee Myung-bak and his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Minh Triet were set to upgrade the relationship between their countries to a "strategic partnership" in a bilateral summit to be held here later Wednesday.

The South Korean president arrived here Tuesday on a three-day visit, during which he will also hold talks with Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and the secretary-general of Vietnam's Communist Party, Nong Duc Manh, on improving bilateral relations.

"South Korea-Vietnam relations have seen remarkable improvements since the countries established diplomatic ties in 1992," Lee said in an interview with Vietnam's state television network, VTV, broadcast Tuesday.

Economy
'Four Saudi Arabias' needed for oil
THE world will have to find four Saudi Arabias by 2030 if it wants to maintain its oil dependency, the International Energy Agency says.

The reality of peak oil is fast approaching, and more must be done to develop and encourage the use of alternatives including solar and nuclear, the agency's chief economist has warned.

"My main motto never changes, the era of low oil prices is over," Dr Fatih Birol said. "When the economy recovers, oil prices will recover accordingly. Mid to long term, we will be experiencing high prices."

Oil prices have been on a steady upward trajectory for much of 2009.
Tracking the decline of the dollar ...
Yesterday morning US time a weakening greenback pushed oil futures beyond $US80 ($A86.48), the highest mark in a year. Crude prices have risen swiftly this month, moving in the opposite direction to the US dollar. When the dollar loses value, crude becomes attractive as an investment.

Crude is traded in dollars, so it essentially gets cheaper when the US currency is weak.

Benchmark crude for November delivery fell 52 cents to settle at $US79.09 on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Earlier in the day, oil ran as high as $US80.05 a barrel as the euro came close to $US1.50.

Saudi Arabia, the globe's largest oil producer, pumped out more than nine million barrels of crude oil per day in 2008, the US Energy Information Agency reported.

Dr Birol believes one major change needed is a move to electricity by transport. "There is a need for the transportation sector to make more use of electricity," he said from the IEA's headquarters in Paris.

Both nuclear- and solar-powered electricity were acceptable alternatives.

Dr Birol said the success or otherwise of efforts to tackle climate change would hinge largely on the upcoming UN climate summit in Copenhagen. "Agreement in Copenhagen is very, very important," he said.

#2  The reality of peak oil is fast approaching, and more must be done to develop and encourage the use of alternatives including solar natural gas and nuclear, the agency's chief economist has warned.

Both nuclear- and solar-powered electricity were acceptable alternatives.

Meanwhile in real world, 9 out of 10 new generating facilities use natural gas.

And finally, Peak Oil isn't the problem. The problem is Saudia and the rest of OPEC make oil reserves and planning state secrets, and regularly turn on the taps to screw with the economics of alternatives. Which prevents the market from properly pricing oil.

#3  Here's 1.5 Saudi Arabias priced at $25/barrel equivalent, with reserves rising quickly.

The reality of peak oil is fast approaching
Peak oil, like Godot, has been fast approaching for decades. In the mean time, OPEC's declared reserves have doubled in the last 30 years.

And finally, Peak Oil isn't the problem. The problem is Saudia and the rest of OPEC make oil reserves and planning state secrets, and regularly turn on the taps to screw with the economics of alternatives. Which prevents the market from properly pricing oil.
Bravo, Phil. Variable oil import taxes to support stable prices so domestic energy sources can develop. If the gov is going to get our money, better it gets it in a way that increases domestic industry and keeps money within the economy.

Europe
No jail request for de Villepin
French prosecutors have demanded an 18-month suspended sentence for former Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin who is a man in his smear trial, but no jail time. Mr de Villepin stands accused of plotting to hurt President Nicolas Sarkozy's chances of winning the 2007 presidential election, which he denies. He had faced a maximum of five years in jail if convicted.
The trial and probably conviction are shame enough for a man who used to captivate the salon when he recited his poetry.
He certainly had no shame when he dotted the 'i' in his name with a butterfly ...
Mr de Villepin, who was also a government minister at the time, has denied orchestrating any plot.

Dubbed France's trial of the decade, the hearings are due to end on Friday but a verdict is not expected before January. Mr de Villepin, 55, is charged with plotting in 2004 to discredit Mr Sarkozy at a time when the two men were rivals to succeed then-President Jacques Chirac. He is accused of passing forged documents to a French magistrate that wrongly implicated Mr Sarkozy in a major corruption scandal.

Mr Sarkozy filed suit, saying he believed Mr de Villepin was the "primary instigator" behind the campaign to thwart his presidential bid.

Prosecutors argued that while Mr de Villepin had not deliberately taken part in the plot to defame Mr Sarkozy, he had failed to take action to stop the conspiracy. Prosecutors also recommended sentences for three other defendants in the case.
So the small fish fry and the big fish gets away ...

#2  It is rumored that Villepin managed to have Srakozy's former wife stumble on a note of the secret service (falsely) telling Sarkozy was cheating her. This led to her leaving him for another man and nearmy cost hilm his chances of becoming president as he paid more attantion to his private life than to hos public one.

#3  the real problem as I see it, are politicians and by way of realation, lawers. Childish infighting and sladerous liable seem to be the modus operendi of these groups. Accountability and Justice seem to be lost to (for) them. I suggest special "new" laws for these groups that would constrain them to a much tighter moral compass than Non politicos. Corruption of thyese new laws would be punishable by expulsion from the process forever, no appeals no nothing, bye bye scum bag.

"Chandrapal alias Chanda, who was wanted in about 15 cases of abduction, dacoity and illegal confinement, was killed in an encounter with the STF team in Vibhuti Khand area of Gomti Nagar," SSP STF Naveen Arora said.

He said Chanda carried a cash reward of Rs 50,000 on his head.

"The STF, which had specific information that Chanda was planning more abductions in Kanpur and Lucknow, was tracking his movements from the last few months," he said.

A pistol was recovered from his possession.
They may be effective, but they just don't have the joie de vivre of the Rab.

Clinton outlines nuke-free world
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is set to outline key steps Washington will take to fulfill President Barack Obama's vision of a world free of nuclear weapons.

In a speech in Washington, Clinton will show how the world will be safer through a new US-Russia nuclear arms reduction treaty as well as broader ratification of a treaty banning nuclear weapons tests, officials said.

"It's going to be an important opportunity for the secretary to lay out our priorities to implement the president's vision at Prague," Clinton's spokesman Ian Kelly said.

In a speech in the Czech capital on April 5, Obama pledged to lead a quest for a world purged of atomic weapons when he unveiled a plan to cut stockpiles, curtail testing, choke fissile production and secure loose nuclear material.

"I think she'll touch on some of the steps that we're working hard on to get to that point, including a successor regime to the START treaty and also the NPT (Non-Proliferation Treaty), which is coming up," he said.

A new review conference for the NPT is scheduled for next year.

Washington and Moscow are pursuing negotiations for a successor to the 1991 Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START), which strictly limits US and Russian arsenals and is seen as a cornerstone of Cold War-era strategic arms control.

The talks made little progress under former US president George W Bush.

But Clinton said during talks in Moscow last week that US and Russian negotiators were on schedule to complete an agreement by the time the treaty expires on December 5.

A new negotiating session, set to last two weeks, opened on Monday in Geneva, with the US side headed by Assistant Secretary of State Rose Gottemoeller, Kelly said.

With the deadline drawing closer, "both sides are negotiating intensively and seriously," Kelly said.

"I think that both sides exchanged drafts of an agreement... There's a lot of overlap in the agreement, so there's progress in that respect," the spokesman said.

A senior State Department official said Clinton "will describe how taking steps," including those to secure a new START agreement, "will make our country safer and more secure and enhance international stability".

The official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said these also include ratification of a Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty and the start of work on a Fissile Material Cut-off Treaty.

Six countries - the United States, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, China and Egypt - have signed but not ratified the pact.

North Korea, India and Pakistan have not signed it and all three have carried out nuclear tests since 1996.

Didn't Russians announced that they are now prepared to use nukes in tactical situations against conventional forces (hard to blame them---having China for a neighbor, etc...)?

Lucasian Professorship Goes to Michael Green
h/t Lubos
String theorist Michael Green has been announced as the next Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University. Green, 63, will succeed Stephen Hawking who held the chair from 1980 before retiring last month at the age of 67 and taking up a distinguished research chair at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Canada.
He's got five years until he, too, must relinquish the post. Good choice!

Great. Unlike gravitational theory or atomic theory or subatomic theory or even the physics of black holes, string theory doesn't seem to be able to make any important falsifiable theories about the world.

Oprah Show will have Sarah Palin Nov 16
In a world exclusive, Oprah Winfrey will interview former Alaska governor Sarah Palin for an episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" to air Monday, Nov. 16, 2009. Winfrey and Palin will meet for the very first time on the episode, which will mark Palin's first interview to discuss her upcoming book, "Going Rogue: An American Life" and her first-ever appearance on the "Oprah" show.
This should prove highly amusing.

#5  Could explain the Oprah vs Obama headlines on one of the rags recently. Oprah has a very large audience of followers. Gaining access to them is a gamble but has a large payout if it works well.
Posted by: rjschwarz || 10/21/2009 9:59 Comments || Top||

#6  It's potentially a win-win. Oprah is struggling to bring her ratings back up. She lost a number of conservatives during her love affair with Obama last year. She's hoping to get some of them back by playing nicey-nice with the governor. For Sarah Palin, she has a book to sell and presumeably future political ambitions. She needs this exposure to white touchy-feelie women to broaden her support. I wish them both well in their personal ambitions for this interview.

I disagree. Sarah has many family-first themes to give and many 'we struggled but triumphed' stories (and with a bonus that the stories are true).

If she hits those notes, she will rock the Oprah world audience.
Posted by: lord garth || 10/21/2009 13:09 Comments || Top||

#13  I thought about that, lord garth. You may be right but I still think many of Oprah's viewers won't understand the kind of family values Sarah endorses.
Posted by: Ebbang Uluque6305 || 10/21/2009 14:24 Comments || Top||

#14  I'm with EU6305. Oprah's audience is people who think the color of their curtains is life-changing. Sarah Palin is a serious intellectual in that company.
Posted by: phil_b || 10/21/2009 20:06 Comments || Top||

#15  Which is not to imply Sarah isn't a serious person. I think she is, but not a well informed intellectual.
Posted by: phil_b || 10/21/2009 20:09 Comments || Top||

#16  but not a well informed intellectual.

perhaps you've heard of noted genius, Sheriff Joe Biden?
Posted by: Frank G || 10/21/2009 21:06 Comments || Top||

#17  I don't think being an intellectual is an asset in a politician. They need to be able to separate the wheat from the self-serving chaff I'm sure they hear most of the time, and do more or less the right thing.

From what I've heard about Sarah Palin, she was better than most politicians at doing this.
Posted by: phil_b || 10/21/2009 21:48 Comments || Top||

#18  On some things. But there are issues where 'common sense' alone doesn't cut it ... a good historical perspective, knowledge about key elements of economics, international relations and other topics is needed to apply 'common sense' to. And too often for my tastes what Palin has to fall back on is an emotional appeal to shared valued.

I happen to agree with most of those values, but it isn't an adequate basis for high national office.

OTOH someone like Liz Cheney has the ethics, principles, family values - and she's well read, articulate, focused and shows signs of significant executive capability.

We need them both, and half a dozen more.
Posted by: lotp || 10/21/2009 22:05 Comments || Top||

#19  lotp,
