Britain
UK: One in four yobs youths admit to crime in past year
The scale of criminality among youths in England and Wales was underlined yesterday by Home Office research which showed that one in 4 admitted committing a crime in the past year.

The figures equate to an estimated 1.6 million 10- to 17-year-olds and 1.2 million 18- to 25-year-olds having committed an offence in the previous 12 months.

The most common "confessed" crimes were assaults and thefts and many were minor. However, the survey of 4,400 young people aged between 10 and 25 also disclosed that 13 per cent of those questioned admitted having committed a serious offence, such as burglary, robbery, assault, stealing a car or selling hard drugs.

A total of seven per cent were classified as a "frequent offenders" – having committed six or more crimes in the last year. They accounted for more than 80 per cent of all offences.

The Offending, Crime and Justice Survey showed that in the 10-17 age group two per cent admitted burglary; 19 per cent admitted violent offences; two per cent confessed to car theft and 13 per cent to other thefts. Two per cent said they had sold drugs. The survey did not cover young people in institutions, including jails, or the homeless, and therefore omitted some high offending groups.

Cop-killer suspect escapes in Muslim veil
A SUSPECT in the killing of a policewoman fled Britain by disguising himself as a Muslim woman wearing a veil, The Times said today. According to the newspaper which cited unidentified police sources, Mustaf Jamma, a Somali man, assumed the identity of his sister and using her passport and wearing a veil got through security at London's Heathrow Airport.

He apparently fled for his homeland after being implicated in the November 2005 murder of Constable Sharon Beshenivsky during an armed robbery in the town of Bradford. Her colleague, Teresa Milburn, 37, was shot and injured in the shoulder.

Jamma, 26, escaped Britain between Christmas Day last year, and New Year's Day, The Times said. At the time of his departure, he had 21 criminal convictions and was one of Britain's most wanted men, with his photograph circulated to every police force, port and airport in the country.

A spokesman for Heathrow Airport was quoted as saying in The Times: "Immigration control staff always do a visual check on people coming into the country but only random checks are made with outgoing passengers.''

Britain in May formally asked Somalia's largely powerless transitional government for help in tracing Jamma.

Jamma's younger brother Yusuf Abdillh Jamma was earlier this week convicted of Constable Beshenivsky's murder, and Muzzaker Imtiaz Shah admitted the charge at Newcastle Crown Court in October.
Another Family Affair.
The pair will be sentenced on Friday along with two other men, Faisal Razzaq and his brother Hassan, who were convicted of manslaughter.

Mustaf Jamma is thought to be under armed protection in Somalia, according to The Times, where his family wields a great deal of influence.

Along with Jamma, Piran Ditta Khan is a sixth suspect in the murder who is on the run.

Despite the majority of British police being unarmed, fatalities are rare and Constable Beshenivsky's death was the first of a female officer since 2001.

#4  More.
I used to think that a 7th century death cult hadn't a hope in hell of winning, now I'm not so sure.

"His residence in the country at the time of the crime should have been unacceptable in itself. Jama was a Somalian asylum seeker who gained entry to Britain on a false passport. He was not deported to his native country because it was considered to be too dangerous a place for him, even though he had served four jail terms in six years after his arrival here. In spite of the fact that his 11 court appearances had included firearms and weapons offences, his own safety was clearly given a higher priority than that of the potential victims of his criminality."

#6  The fact that "one of Britain's most wanted men" was able to escape in a dumbass disguise, will only further embolden the jihadis around the world. They will see the West as even more stupid, weak, soft-heartened, and non-threatening than they already do. Multi-culti does NOT apply to enemy combatants and criminals. Moslem women will have to "unveil" at security checkpoints (Oh, the shame . . . ) if we want to stay safe, or the next thing will be some plan to hijack or blow up planes by guys dresses as Muzzie chicks.

Aaaargh . . . it's much too early for this. I need some coffee. Or maybe something stronger.

P.S. In honor of the upcoming Western holiday, I expect everybody to buy some kind of cute pig figurine to put on their desk or bookshelf and drink at least one alcoholic beverage a day. "Pig and Swig." : ) Cheers!

#8  This is such stupidity it really almost doesn't deserve comment. By allowing this, they'll get a lot more. Another standard Lions of Islam tactic...sneak around like women, let women be your shields when you're cornered. Nothing but gutless, sneaky, yellow pices of camel shit.

Also, noticed that common Britons have no trust in their police and now starting to acquire arms to protect themselves. Gawd, I'd think it would finally dawn on them that they're on their own. Fight or die is becoming a very real prospect in England. Sad to see a society crumble.

#9  One more time, think how fast Muslims would feel unwanted if the burga and niqab were banned along with halal slaughtering. Just these few measures would instantly weed out a large number of nonassimilating types.

On the halal front, a good friend of mine was once director of animal services for all of Silicon Valley. I'll be contacting this person and asking that they begin circulating the anti-halal message nationwide. I'm not big on animal rights, as in; "If we're not supposed to eat them why are they made outta meat?" Still, taking a living animal, slashing its throat and letting it bleed to death without any humane measures doesn't sit well with me. Sorta fits in with how Islamists treat the kufir though.

#13  I was taught that kosher slaughter requires a knife so sharp the animal is killed with the first stroke -- the bleeding out is just because the heart hasn't caught up with reality. ;-) The rules for kosher slaughtering were devised over the centuries by the rabbis to minimize the animal's suffering, and maximize cleanliness and sanitation.

Caribbean-Latin America
Peruvia President : Try a Coca-Leaf Salad
President Alan Garcia on Tuesday suggested an unorthodox use for the coca leaf, the raw material for cocaine: Why not toss it in a salad?

"I insist that it can be consumed directly and elegantly in salad," Garcia told foreign correspondents at the Government Palace.

Garcia's comments put him in the company of leftist presidents Evo Morales of Bolivia and Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, who have publicly promoted mixing the high-calcium leaf into everything from toothpaste to soft drinks. Coca has for centuries been considered a medicinal and ceremonial plant in Andean culture, and Garcia said it should not be vilified as useful solely for producing the illegal narcotic.

Garcia said Gaston Acurio, one of Peru's best known chefs, recently served several coca-based dishes for an event at the Government Palace.

"He offered us some tamales and pies made with coca flour. He offered us a coca liqueur cocktail," Garcia said. "Could eating coca leaf be harmful? No, absolutely not."

A recent report by a Peruvian anti-drug group questioned coca's potential benefits to people, however, saying some studies showed that its nutrients cannot be absorbed by the human body.

Peru permits cultivation of about 25,000 acres of coca for chewing and for sale to companies that produce pharmaceutical cocaine, package coca tea or produce extracts used in soft drinks. But experts say more than 90 percent of Peruvian coca is grown illegally to fuel the cocaine trade.

Watched the History Channel's series on illicit drugs and alcohol last night and they spent about ten minutes talking about Vin Mariani. Apparently this stuff was SERIOUSLY popular here at one time and one of its most well known spokespersons was Thomas Edison.
Who, if you recall, was known for staying up as much as two or three days in a row while working on inventions.

Explains a lot.

Good one - my trivia sense has been a litle off the last few days. IIRC he had a dedicated lab staff of 4-6 guys who actually did the heavy lifting as far as putting things together and seeing how or if they worked. Edison was the idea man who worked out whether or not something was technically possible, and he does deserve the credit for everything that he's credited with.

#16  Curiously, Edison's first patent was for an electric voting machine. Local pols were outraged that they could no longer stuff their ballots boxes and promptly legislated the little devils out of existence.

From that point on, Edison vowed only to work upon things that already had an existing market. My favorite quote of Edison's was about his forthcoming lightbulb;

"We will make electricity so cheap that only the rich will burn candles."

Pretty visionary.

US announces sanctions against Fiji coup leaders
WASHINGTON - The United States suspended financial aid and weapons sales to Fiji on Tuesday and imposed travel bans on army commanders and other officials involved in a December 5 military coup against the Pacific nation’s elected government, the State Department announced. The sanctions cover around 2.5 million dollars in primarily military-related aid and bar new economic assistance programs to Fiji, the State Department said in a statement.

Under the measures, Washington suspended deliveries and sales of ”lethal military equipment” to Fiji and banned the Fiji military from US-sponsored military exercises or conferences. It also imposed visa sanctions on senior military officers and members of the army-installed interim government, barring them from visiting the United States.

In its statement, the US reiterated its condemnation of the coup led by army commander Voreqe Bainimarama and called on the military chief “to abandon his extra-judicial activities, withdraw completely from politics and restore Fiji’s legitimate democratically elected government”.

Rome, 20 Dec. Widespread use of methadone 'fails to tackle the damage of drug abuse'
Check here to have 10£ of your taxes dedicated to this worthwhile effort.
<
Something tells me that the Social Engineers have chalked up, yet another, astounding success here. Their string is unbroken.
SCOTLAND'S reliance on methadone is failing to tackle the damage wreaked on society by drug abuse, it was claimed yesterday, as new figures showed a massive rise in the use of the heroin substitute.

A record 457,092 methadone prescriptions were issued to heroin addicts in 2005-6, compared with 408,877 the previous year and 45 per cent more than in 2001-2.

Methadone is intended to stabilise heroin users' addiction, satisfying their desire for the drug while removing the need for them to resort to crime and prostitution.
They are "broken" - we must Fix Them. Look, it's simple: substitute Addiction B for Addiction A, make them productive members of society, voila! And no, damnit, I have no idea why they call it dope.

#1  Widespread use of methadone 'fails to tackle the damage of drug abuse'

a holeistic approach would include lead therapy. 100% successful too I hear.
Posted by: RD || 12/20/2006 1:26 Comments || Top||

#2  Years ago, a highly successful 3-drug technique which would get addicts of heroin quickly and keep a high percentage off for good. The first drug would put them into a coma for four days; the second would strip all remaining heroin out of their body; and the third would block the heroin receptors, preventing the effects of any new heroin. The third drug is administered monthly for a year, with counseling.

An estimated 1 in 1000 people who went through the procedure died, either due to pre-existing weakness or as a reaction to one of the drugs.

It was successfully tested in Europe. However, a strong and determined lobbying effort by the producers and distributors of methadone prevented even any testing to be done in the US. This is because methadone is extremely profitable as a government subsidized alternative addiction.

And though proven effective, Europe was also persuaded to discontinue efforts to develop, improve and use the 3-drug technique.

Draft Obama effort begins in Oregon
Something Oregonians can be proud of.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Backers of Democratic U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, who’s mulling a presidential bid, have launched a campaign aimed at persuading Oregonians to go online to register their support for him at an Internet “Draft Obama” site.
It's important.
Jason Owens, a Portland political activist and spokesman for the effort, said the goal is to get thousands of Oregonians to join people in other states who are urging the Illinois senator to run.

“Oregonians are moved and encouraged by Barack Obama’s message of hope and refreshing candor,” Owens said Monday.
He's like a clean white slate, y'know? And his candor, woohoo!, he likes to fly on private jets! When's the last time we saw such honesty in a politician? My cockles are toasty.
Though still in his first term in the Senate, Obama is a rising Democratic Party star who has gotten a lot of national attention for his commanding speaking style and compelling personal story.

Portland pollster Tim Hibbitts said there’s a lot of buzz around Obama, but it’s far too early to predict how he might fare among Oregon Democrats if he is a presidential contender in 2008. “I suspect that many of the people who are promoting him now are doing so because he has a great life story and he speaks well,” Hibbitts said. “But at the end of the day, if he does run, he’s going to have to convince Oregonians that despite his thin resume of public service he is up to the job of being president in some very difficult times,” he said.

At this point, New York Sen. Hillary Clinton is seen as the leading Democratic presidential contender for 2008. The former first lady traveled to Oregon earlier this year, drawing an enthusiastic crowd of 900 supporters to a Portland fundraising event. “She would probably start with a lead” in Oregon, says Neel Pender, executive director of the Oregon Democratic Party.

Still, Pender said Obama could be a formidable contender in Oregon if he chooses to run because he’s seen as a fresh face with fresh ideas “who can bring people together.” Plus, with his opposition to the war in Iraq, Obama “is on the right side of Oregon Democrats on that issue,” Pender said.
Being on "the right side of Oregon Democrats" is purdy much like being just to the Left of Trotsky. Yep, so much to be proud of up in Oregawn.
Owens, the “Draft Obama” spokesman in Oregon, said organizers are planning rallies and other activities in Oregon to drum up support for an Obama presidential bid.

The Illinois senator spoke at a fundraising event in Seattle in October, Owens said, “and we want to bring him back to the Northwest. We’re hopeful that we will see him here in Oregon sometime soon.”
Oh, I wouldn't worry about that. No matter what he does about running / not running for Prez 2008, if there's a private jet in the deal, hey, he's there, man.

U.S. lawmakers urge action after China meeting
Lawmakers on Friday urged the U.S. and Chinese governments to follow two days of high-level talks on trade and economic concerns with concrete action.

The U.S. trade deficit with China could reach a record $240 billion this year, fueling the belief in Congress that Beijing is deliberately undervaluing its currency by 15 to 40 percent to give Chinese exporters an advantage in world trade.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson told reporters the two countries had agreed during the meetings in Beijing to bring more balance to the U.S.-China trade relationship. U.S. officials also told their Chinese counterparts "in the clearest possible terms" that China needs to move toward a more flexible currency exchange rate policy, Paulson said.

But Sen. Charles Schumer, a New York Democrat who is one of China's harshest critics in Congress, said he expected Beijing to continue dragging its feet on much-needed reform. Democrats will again ask the U.S. Trade Representative's office to formally challenge China's currency practices at the World Trade Organization even though USTR has rejected that request a number times in the past. Lawmakers will also reintroduce legislation requiring the Commerce Department to consider China's "currency manipulation" as a subsidy under U.S. trade laws so companies can apply for countervailing duties to offset it.

Many U.S. financial services group applauded this week's talks as an important step forward to Chinese reform, but some other industry associations were less impressed.

How much is that of Walmart? Bout my only hang up with the outfit.

On the other hand, if the Chinese were to act upon Taiwan, what would shutting $240B off the Chinese economy do? Could we say massive recession. I'm sure the Party is prepared for that.

#3  Now Chucky, you've been looking for an issue to pursue. You've talked of this before. Get on it. Generate a bill that slaps a unilateral 30% tariff on all Chinese exports to US. That'll get the hornets flying and put your name right up front on the Ny Slimes.

#4  China undervaluing its currency? You mean they're, like, not playing fair? I'm shocked, I tell you. Shocked! Why can't we slap a tariff on them? Makes too much sense? Wait a minute, I get it, Walmart wouldn't like that and then they wouldn't contribute to somebody's election campaign. People might complain 'cause they couldn't get all that cheap, plastic crap Made in China anymore. The commies wouldn't like it either and they wouldn't contribute either. Ooops. Did I say that? Can't have that. Never mind national security, just secure those profits and get yourself elected.

It's ironic that the world's biggest capitalist pigs exploit workers in the world's biggest commie concentration camp. But with the commie bosses raking in all that dough for the PLA you have to wonder, who is exploiting whom?

#5  How much is that of Walmart? Bout my only hang up with the outfit.

Unavising Hupoper6717, it's pretty clear you don't know jacksquat about Wal-Mart. On average Wal-Mart represents a solid 10% of our trade deficit with communist China. Beyond that, Wal-Mart has numerous extremely negative impacts upon the towns where they set up business. Forget for the nonce about how they hollow out a community's small business core.

Municipalities entice Wal-Mart stores to locate in their area by offering huge tax relief incentives. The suckered politicians do not realize that Wal-Mart employees are so severely underpaid that many of them make below poverty line incomes.

These "working poor" then fall back upon local government safety nets for food stamps, health care, lunch programs and other social services to make up the shortfall of working at Wal-Mart's scanty wages. Some estimates place the 2004 Federal tax burden consumed by Wal-Mart employees at a staggering 2.5 BILLION dollars.

Some information from the Wake-Up Wal-Mart web site:

A Substantial Number of Wal-Mart Associates earn far below the poverty line

· In 2001, sales associates, the most common job in Wal-Mart, earned on average $8.23 an hour for annual wages of $13,861. The 2001 poverty line for a family of three was $14,630. [“Is Wal-Mart Too Powerful?”, Business Week, 10/6/03, US Dept of Health and Human Services 2001 Poverty Guidelines, 2001]

· A 2003 wage analysis reported that cashiers, the second most common job, earn approximately $7.92 per hour and work 29 hours a week. This brings in annual wages of only $11,948. [“Statistical Analysis of Gender Patterns in Wal-Mart’s Workforce”, Dr. Richard Drogin 2003]

· One 200-employee Wal-Mart store may cost federal taxpayers $420,750 per year. This cost comes from the following, on average:

o $36,000 a year for free and reduced lunches for just 50 qualifying Wal-Mart families.

o $42,000 a year for low-income housing assistance.

o $125,000 a year for federal tax credits and deductions for low-income families.

o $100,000 a year for the additional expenses for programs for students.

o $108,000 a year for the additional federal health care costs of moving into state children's health insurance programs (S-CHIP)

o $9,750 a year for the additional costs for low income energy assistance.

Spot on, Ebbang Uluque6305. Our politicians cannot bring themselves to demand that their campaign contributors pull away from Uncle Mao's All-You-Buy cheap labor trough. Even when it is compromising national security. We are all being sold down the proverbial Yangtze River.

Some facts about Wal-Mart and China:

Wal-Mart buys much of its merchandise from China

· Wal-Mart reports that it purchased $18 billion of goods from China in 2004.

· Wal-Mart was responsible for about 1/10th of the U.S. trade deficit with China in 2005. [“U.S. Stock Investors Wary of Analyst `Yuan Plays': Taking Stock, Bloomberg, 7/1/05]

· If Wal-Mart were an individual economy, it would rank as China’s eighth-biggest trading partner, ahead of Russia, Australia and Canada. [China Business Weekly, 12/02/2004]

Many of Wal-Mart's “American Suppliers” actually manufacture most or all of their products in China

· An example of an “American Supplier” is Hasbro, headquartered in Rhode Island. Today, Wal-Mart is the largest purchaser of Hasbro products—accounting for 21 percent of all Hasbro goods or more than $600 million in sales. But Hasbro reports, “We source production of substantially all of our toy products and certain of our game products through unrelated manufacturers in various Far East countries, principally China.” Hasbro specifies that “the substantial majority of our toy products are manufactured in China.” [2004 Hasbro 10-K filed with the SEC]

Wal-Mart's Chinese factory workers are treated poorly

· Workers making clothing for Wal-Mart in Shenzhen, China filed a class action lawsuit against Wal-Mart in September 2005 claiming that they were not paid the legal minimum wage, not permitted to take holidays off and were forced to work overtime. They said their employer had withheld the first three months of all workers' pay, almost making them indentured servants because the company refused to pay the money if they quit. [New York Times, September 14, 2005]

· Workers making toys for Wal-Mart in China’s Guangdong Province reported that they would have to meet a quota of painting 8,900 toy pieces in an eight hour shift [~3 seconds per piece] in order to earn the stated wage of $3.45 a day. If they failed to meet that quota, the factory would only pay them $1.23 for a day’s work. [China Labor Watch, December 21, 2005]

Elsewhere workers producing goods for Wal-Mart also face appalling conditions, despite Wal-Mart’s factory inspection program

· Workers from Bangladesh, China, Indonesia, Nicaragua and Swaziland brought a class action lawsuit against Wal-Mart in September 2005 asserting that the company’s codes of conduct were violated in dozens of ways. They said they were often paid less than the legal minimum wage and did not receive mandated time-and-a-half for overtime, and some said they were beaten by managers and were locked in their factories. [New York Times, September 14, 2005]

· A female apparel worker in Dhaka, Bangladesh, said she was locked into the factory and did not have a day off in her first six months. She said she was told if she refused to work the required overtime, she would be fired. Another worker said her supervisor attacked her “by slapping her face so hard that her nose began bleeding simply because she was unable to meet” her “high quota.” [New York Times, September 14, 2005]

· In 2004, only 8 percent of Wal-Mart inspectors’ visits to factories were unannounced, giving supervisors the chance to coach workers what to say and hide violations. Wal-Mart claimed it planned to double unannounced visits by its inspectors but that would still leave 80 percent of inspections announced. [CFO Magazine, August 2005]

· A former Wal-Mart executive James Lynn has sued the company claiming he was fired because he warned the company that an inspection manager was intimidating underlings into passing Central American suppliers. Lynn documented forced pregnancy tests, 24-hour work shifts, extreme heat, pat-down searches, locked exits, and other violations of the labor laws of these Central American countries. [New York Times, July 1, 2005 and James Lynn to Odair Violim, April 28, 2002, www.nclnet.org]

Wal-Mart is not America's friend.

If you want to shop at a good organization, patronize Costco. Wall Street has repeatedly threatened to downgrade Costco's rating because the company steadfastly refuses to reduce employee benefits in order to maximize earnings. This is the exact opposite of Wal-Mart's predatory policy.

Wal-Mart is essentially un-American in their exploitation of all loopholes that maximize corporate profit without creating actual careers. Communities are not built around jobs, they are based upon real careers that pay a livable salary. Poverty line wages do not fulfill those criteria.

#6  So, China is sending us toys and we send them green pieces of paper. BFD. Just because it has the word "deficit" doesn't mean it's bad.

China is not a nice country and pulls a lot of dirty tricks. But, a trade "deficit" per se is not something to stay awake at night about.
Posted by: Jackal || 12/20/2006 20:48 Comments || Top||

#7  It's what they do with those "green pieces of paper" that is cause for concern. As in; Building more nuclear weapons, upgrading their military, undertaking insanely destructive civil engineering projects, giving assistance to terrorist organizations or terrorist sponsoring countries in East Africa. The list goes on and we keep refilling their pen.

It also has to do with how they get so many of those "green pieces of paper" due to illicit manipulation of their currency. We are getting snookered in a huge mah-jong game that is rigged nine ways to Sunday. By comparison, I could stand fair trade, but trade with China is anything but fair. The question of even doing business with communists in the first place is another matter entirely.
Posted by: Zenster || 12/20/2006 21:20 Comments || Top||

#8  I noticed Chinese agents running through downtown tonight putting guns to the heads of shoppers and abducting them into busses that drove them directly to Wal-Mart where Chinese minders accompanied them until they had bought everything on their list. The customers were then put through a demagnetizer and their memories of the abduction were erased. All their purchases were put in Costco bags and the trade deficit disappeared.

#9  Then you probably heard those same rumors I did about how the average American consumer is a well-educated comparison shopper who is keenly aware of how the short life expectancy of low-cost goods rarely justifies any money saved.

Science & Technology
Anheuser-Busch introduces sorghum beer
People with wheat allergies who have stayed away from beer now have a new option.

Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc. on Wednesday introduced Redbridge, which the company called the first nationally available sorghum beer. Starting Wednesday, Redbridge is available in restaurants and stores carrying organic products.

Sorghum is the primary ingredient in the beer from the makers of the nation's top-selling full-calorie and light beers, Budweiser and Bud Light. Sorghum is a safe grain for those with wheat allergies. Anheuser-Busch is also marketing the beer as an alternative for those who choose wheat-free or gluten-free diets.

Brewmaster Kristin Zantop said that in addition to sorghum, the beer is made with imported hallertau and domestic cascade hops.

Anheuser-Busch said it worked closely with the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness in developing Redbridge. Celiac disease is a disorder that can cause damage to the intestines when anything is consumed containing gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye.

An estimated 3 million Americans have been diagnosed with celiac disease, prompting an increased demand for gluten-free products.

At least three smaller brewers make gluten-free beer in the U.S. Lakefront Brewery Inc. of Milwaukee, Wis., makes New Grist out of sorghum and rice. Ramapo Valley Brewing in Hillburn, N.Y., makes Passover Honey Beer by adding hops to honey and molasses. Bard's Tale Beer Co. in Kansas City makes Dragon's Gold.

#3  For personal reasons I am real pleased to see a major national company acknowledge this market and make a move into it. If it succeeds, and spreads, it could make our lives a bit easier. Anheuser-Busch products may not be the best beers around, but they are certainly not the worst, and they wouldn't put their name behind something that was just not drinkable (Steve's 'prison beer').

UK report says robots will have rights
WARNING: NSFB (Not Safe For Bots)
The images embedded in this article may cause your 'puter thingy to malfunction. I'm just sayin...

I wuz purdy worried. With Isaac gone, who speaks for the 'bots, eh?
The next time you beat your keyboard in frustration, think of a day where it may be able to sue you for assault. Within 50 years we might even find ourselves standing next to the next generation of vacuum cleaners in the voting booth.
So, um, are you saying that politics is gonna suck even more? Somebody didn't see Blade Runner, methinks.
Far from being extracts from the extreme end of science fiction, the idea that we may one day give sentient machines the kind of rights traditionally reserved for humans is raised in a British government-commissioned report which claims to be an extensive look into the future.
Somebody either does not have enuff to do -- or needs a Nurse Ratchet enema, applied with extreme prejudice.
Visions of the status of robots around 2056 have emerged from one of 270 forward-looking papers sponsored by Sir David King, the UK government’s chief scientist. The paper covering robots’ rights was written by a UK partnership of Outsights, the management consultancy, and Ipsos Mori, the opinion research organisation. “If we make conscious robots they would want to have rights and they probably should,” said Henrik Christensen, director of the Centre of Robotics and Intelligent Machines at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
If we make conscious robots, something tells me they'll go for pr0n in a big way. WD-40 prices will shoot through the roof thingy and the 'Net will slow to a crawl, lol.
The idea will not surprise science fiction aficionados. It was widely explored by Dr Isaac Asimov, one of the foremost science fiction writers of the 20th century. He wrote of a society where robots were fully integrated and essential in day-to-day life.

In his system, the ‘three laws of robotics’ governed machine life. They decreed that robots could not injure humans, must obey orders and protect their own existence – in that order.
Lol. They'll sue the pants off of anyone who tries to enforce such anti-bot drivel.
Robots and machines are now classed as inanimate objects without rights or duties but if artificial intelligence becomes ubiquitous, the report argues, there may be calls for humans’ rights to be extended to them.

It is also logical that such rights are meted out with citizens’ duties, including voting, paying tax and compulsory military service.

Mr Christensen said: “Would it be acceptable to kick a robotic dog even though we shouldn’t kick a normal one? There will be people who can’t distinguish that so we need to have ethical rules to make sure we as humans interact with robots in an ethical manner so we do not move our boundaries of what is acceptable.”
A "normal" one? Racist bastard!
The Horizon Scan report argues that if ‘correctly managed’, this new world of robots’ rights could lead to increased labour output and greater prosperity.
And if you determine that they're actually, y'know, machines, they'll be even more productive: they won't vote Labour of DhimmiDonk.
“If granted full rights, states will be obligated to provide full social benefits to them including income support, housing and possibly robo-healthcare to fix the machines over time,” it says.
Lol. They're just creamin' their jeans (Jeans abuse!) to offer 'Bot Dole™, lol.
But it points out that the process has casualties and the first one may be the environment, especially in the areas of energy and waste.
Lol. Recycling will certainly be eliminated.

WSJ "Best of the Web": Sheehanoia Redux
Excerpt:
Remember Cindy Sheehan? Neither does anyone else, which we suppose is why the Associated Press is now putting forward a new "folk hero" for the "anti-war movement": Rosemarie Jackowski, a diminutive sexagenarian from Vermont who was arrested in 2003 for disrupting traffic and has been appealing her conviction ever since. The AP makes her out to be just a regular old lady; "Vt. Woman Is an Unlikely Peace Activist," reads the headline, and the story, by John Curran, includes a putative veteran's endorsement:
"She's not a loony toon by any means," said Andrew Schoerke, 73, a retired U.S. Navy captain who was arrested with her. "She's a very down to earth, sensible, caring person with some very strong convictions."
Such as being a public nuisance, lol.
