Man pretended to be a Stanford student, squatted in dorms for nearly a year
[NYP] An Alabama man posed as a Stanford University student, squatting in several campus dorms and associating with the student community for nearly a year, according to university officials and reports.

William Curry, a 2021 high school grad from Birmingham, was kicked off campus Thursday after he allegedly stole a television from the Crothers Hall student residence, where he had been squatting in the basement for several weeks, The Stanford Daily reported.

The university previously removed him from campus several times, but Curry kept coming back and was able to blend in and access several dormitories, the student newspaper reported.

Curry, who posed as a sophomore studying pre-med, lived in at least five student residence halls from Fall 2021 up until his removal last week, students told the newspaper.

Students said the man had broken into dorm rooms and harassed at least one student, according to the publication.

Migos, whoever they are, rapper Takeoff, whoever he was, banged in Houston
[NYPOST] Rapper Takeoff, best known as one-third of the hip-hop group Migos, was shot and killed Tuesday morning, a rep confirmed.
Legos v. Migos!
The Grammy-nominated hitmaker, whose real name is Kirshnik Khari Ball, died in a shooting after a fight broke out over a dice game at a private party at 810 Billiards & Bowling in downtown Houston, TMZ reported. He was 28.

A rep, who was not authorized to speak publicly, confirmed the rapper’s death to the News Agency that Dare Not be Named.

Houston Police and fire officials arrived on the scene at around 2:40 a.m. after some people heard gunfire on the balcony.

"A lot of folks were there," Police Lt. Ronnie Wilkins told the Houston Chronicle. "They were in front of the bar. The bar was closed at the time, but people were congregating out on the balcony area. Everybody fled."

Footage obtained by TMZ showed fellow Migos member, Quavo, 31, and others gathered around Takeoff, who was lying on the ground. The clip reportedly showed the group trying to move his body before they put him back down and shouted for help.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Two additional victims were transported to nearby hospitals in private vehicles in unknown condition.

Police did not release the identities of the victims, but said the person killed was a man in his late 20s.

Supreme Court Poised to Strike Down Racial Preferences
[Townhall] Lawsuits against Harvard University and the University of North Carolina are exposing the crude and dehumanizing racial sorting that goes on in the admissions offices at elite universities.

The application form asks young people to check a box identifying themselves as either "(1) Asian, (2) Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, (3) Hispanic, (4) White, (5) African American or (6) Native American." White Hispanics with ancestors from Spain are lumped in with Central American immigrants. The Black child of a Harvard-trained doctor or diplomat checks the same box as a Black applicant living in a homeless shelter. The Asian category absurdly covers 60% of the world's population, from China to Japan to India.

Applicants who mark Hispanic or African American win acceptance with test scores and grades far below what whites or Asians, on average, need to get in, according to data presented to the court.

Broad categories are appropriate for sorting zoo animals -- reptiles over here, mammals over there -- but it's no way to recognize the humanity and individual merit of college applicants.

On Monday, the Supreme Court justices grilled the Harvard and UNC attorneys. The questions indicate the Court is likely to outlaw using race to determine who is accepted.

Universities could still consider the achievements of applicants who convey in their personal essay or interviews that they have overcome hardships related to their race. Patrick Strawbridge, a lawyer for Students for Fair Admissions, which brought the lawsuits, explained what SFFA objects to is the consideration of "race by itself."

First, if AA is struck down, no one is going to notice, because the Biden Administration will refuse to enforce it.

Second, look for the media to start hitting GOP candidates with "Enforce = Racism".

Third, the schools will stand up and refuse to change their ways, claiming that it's the same as standing up against the Fugitive Slave Laws, etc.

#16  The unspoken corollary for those prestigious universities is that the disparity in admissions will also reflect an eventual disparity in competence. Once in, a pattern of race-based failure rates will be equally unacceptable, and compensation in grading and performance will leak in the system as academic integrity also falters. So in time, a minority graduate from the ivies will be presumed to be of lesser skill and ability, since merit and achievement are suspect. Absent genuine, credible meritocracy, the extreme cost of such institutions will spell their own extinction.

North Korea launches at least 17 23 missiles; South Korea answers with its own test missiles
[FoxNews] North Korea fired more than 20 missiles on Wednesday in the direction of South Korea, and at least one landed near the rivals’ tense sea border.

South Korea retaliated by firing its own test missiles, sending some citizens to evacuate in underground shelters.

This is the most missiles North Korea has ever fired in one day and the first time a short-range ballistic missile has landed near South Korea's territory since 1945, when the peninsula was divided.

The launches came hours after North Korea threatened to use nuclear weapons to get the U.S. and South Korea to "pay the most horrible price in history" as it has intensified its fiery rhetoric targeting the ongoing South Korean-U.S. military drills that it views as an invasion rehearsal.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said at least one of the missiles launched by North Korea landed less than 40 miles from the South Korean city of Sokcho on the nation's east coast and 104 miles from Ulleung, where air raid warnings had sounded.

"We heard the siren at around 8:55 a.m., and all of us in the building went down to the evacuation place in the basement," an Ulleung county official told Reuters. "We stayed there until we came upstairs at around 9:15 after hearing that the projectile fell into the high seas."

The South's Joint Chiefs said President Yoon Suk-yeol had ordered a "swift response" to the North's latest attack.

South Korea’s military said North Korea launched at least 23 missiles Wednesday — 17 in the morning and six in the afternoon — off its eastern and western coasts.

The North also fired more than 100 rounds of artillery from its east coast into a military buffer zone established in a military agreement with the South, according to South Korea's military. The South's Joint Chiefs said the firing violates a 2018 agreement.

North Korea has demanded the U.S. and South Korea end large-scale military exercises around the peninsula.

This was the first time a North Korean ballistic missile had landed near South Korean waters, according to the South's Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The U.S. and South Korea began one of their largest combined military air drills on Monday, called Vigilant Storm, with hundreds of warplanes from both countries staging mock attacks 24 hours per day.

North Korea has already test-fired a record number of missiles this year. The country has said a recent barrage of launches was in response to the military drills.

Officials in South Korea and the U.S. say North Korea has completed technical preparations to conduct a nuclear weapon test for the first time since 2017.

U.S. Postal Service warns against using their mailboxes for anything important
[American Thinker] The U.S. Postal Service has announced that it has a security problem with its blue mailboxes:

According to 24/7 Wall Street, a personal finance site:

The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) has warned people not to use its blue boxes on specific dates. It particularly warned about the chances of theft from these on Sundays and holidays.

The USPS's warning suggested how people dodge the trouble. "If customers simply used retail service or inside wall drop slots to send their U.S. Mail, instead of depositing it to sit outside overnight or through the weekend, blue collection boxes would not be as enticing after business hours to mail thieves for identity theft and check-washing schemes."

As a solution, people should go to their local post office or put mail in boxes after the last dispatch time.

Which is pretty queasy-making news, considering that election officials are asking voters to deposit their mail-in ballots with these same blue mail boxes with all these security problems.

The news comes at an inconvenient time, given that midterms are about a week away now.

The news is strikingly credible, because it's focused on consumer finance, and the security focus is on the mailing of checks.

A Google search of the matter shows that mail break-ins are being investigated in many places, and Postal Service warnings are going out through local radio stations in places such as Texas, New York, Indiana, California, Pennsylvania, Alabama -- to take just a random search. It suggests a rather widespread problem that hasn't been gotten under control, and they're under intense pressure from upset customers.

Meanwhile, over in electionville, Washington authorities are touting the wonderfulness of mail-in balloting, claiming it's utterly safe, convenient, and secure.

If a mailpiece, as they call it, is not secure from thieves who steal checks, why would a mail-in ballot be secure from political operatives fanatically committed to ensuring that their candidate wins by any means necessary?

Somehow, it's secure from one group and not the other? It suggests there are problems already and the with the post office had no choice but to warn consumers about them now, so maybe the voters should be warned as well -- before we hear the coming drivel about safest, securest elections in history.

Affront to dignity, patriarchal, sexist: SC on two-finger test on rape survivors
Ick.
[GREATERKASHMIR] The Supreme Court on Monday said a woman's sexual history is wholly immaterial while adjudicating whether the accused raped her, and anybody who conducts the two-finger test on rape survivors would be guilty of misconduct.

It also declared the invasive procedure as patriarchal and unscientific, which re-victimises and re-traumatises the women.

A bench comprising Justices D Y Chandrachud and Hima Kohli said: "The so-called test is based on the incorrect assumption that a sexually active woman cannot be raped. Nothing could be further from the truth - a woman's sexual history is wholly immaterial while adjudicating whether the accused raped her."

It actually took 75 years of being a country to get a judge to notice this. In India most people will cover up their own rape or assault and just try and move on, because the law enforcement and judiciary are shit. Everything else is shit too but especially justice.

Science & Technology
It's time to play ‘find the falling Chinese rocket’ once again
Never mind, Bub, it’s China.
[ArsTechnica] We can probably expect reentry into Earth's atmosphere to occur about a week from today.

On Monday, China's space program successfully launched another large piece of its space station. The 23-ton Mengtian module will provide pressurized volume for scientific experiments and is the final large living area to be added to the Tiangong space station.

China has constructed its modular space station—similar in form and function to the International Space Station, although smaller—on time and with few major issues. This can be considered a triumph for the Chinese space program, which now has capabilities second only to NASA and the commercial space industry in the United States.

However, the assembly of the space station has had one unfortunate side effect. To launch the main modules of Tiangong, including Monday's flight, China has used a modified version of its powerful Long March 5B rocket. And as part of the overall mission profile, the vehicle's massive core stage reenters Earth's atmosphere in an uncontrollable manner.

Typically during a launch, a rocket's large first stage will provide the majority of thrust during the first minutes of launch and then drop away before reaching an orbital velocity, falling back into an ocean harmlessly. A smaller second stage then takes over and pushes the rocket's payload into orbit. However, the modified version of the Long March 5B has no upper stage. Rather, it consists of a core stage with four strap-on boosters.

The boosters power the rocket off the pad, but then the core stage, with its two YF-77 main engines, pushes the space station modules to low-Earth orbit. At that point, the core stage lacks the capability to restart its main engines and make a controlled entry into Earth's atmosphere. Typically, rocket upper stages and other used space hardware is disposed of by aiming for the remote Point Nemo, in the Pacific Ocean, but that will not happen in this case.

Not all space hardware needs to be disposed of in such a manner. Vehicles such as the Russian Progress spacecraft are small enough to burn up in the atmosphere. But that's not the case with the core stage of the Long March 5B rocket, which has a mass of more than 20 metric tons. Large pieces of metal will make it to the surface of the Earth.

On the three previous launches of this rocket—in 2020, 2021, and 2022—chunks of debris damaged villages in the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire, fell into the Indian Ocean, and landed near villages in Borneo, respectively. Fortunately, no one has yet been injured by this falling debris.

China has largely refused to acknowledge the problem created by this rocket. The commentator on Monday's launch broadcast by China Central Television, which is owned by the Chinese state, went so far as to say that the core stage would completely burn up in Earth's atmosphere on reentry. Almost certainly, that will not be the case.

Based on past launches of the Long March 5B, we can probably expect reentry into Earth's atmosphere to occur about a week from today, give or take a day or so. For now, we watch and wait.

Mars moon mystery: Strange structures found inside 'fearful' Phobos
[Space.com] Europe's Mars Express spacecraft has peered deeper into the subsurface of the Martian moon Phobos than ever before, finding hints of unknown structures that could be clues as to the moon's origin.

Mars Express, which is a 19-year-veteran spacecraft in orbit around Mars, came within 51.6 miles (83 kilometers) of Phobos on Sept. 22, 2022 and was able to probe beneath the moon's surface using upgraded software on its MARSIS instrument (Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionosphere Sounding).

Understanding the interior structure of Phobos could be key in solving the mystery of its origin. "We are still at an early stage in our analysis, but we have already seen possible signs of previously unknown features below the moon's surface," said Andrea Cicchetti, who is a member of the MARSIS science team at INAF, the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics, in a statement(opens in new tab).

#3  "The main bright line is the reflection from the surface of Phobos, but beneath that there is evidence for fainter lines that could just be interference, or 'clutter,' from features on the surface, but they could also be caused by structures below the surface."

That's cool. R.Hoagland has a lot of theories on Phobos and Mars. Would be nice if he was validated before his death.
