'Our priority is to save lives' says coast guard intercepting migrants off Tunisia's coast
[AFRICANEWS] Tunisia’s eastern coast, notably the port city of Sfax, has become the main launching point for migrants colonists, mostly from sub-Saharan Africa, to get to Italia and other parts of Europa
...the land mass occupying the space between the English Channel and the Urals, also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
in small boats.

The Tunisian National Coast Guards spent 24 hours at sea intercepting and rescuing an ever-increasing number of migrants colonists. Mouh detailed the opération on Thursday (Aug. 10).

"Since the beginning of this month until now, in just ten days, the centre's maritime sector has arrested around 3,000 migrants colonists, 90% of whom are Sub-Saharan and the remaining 10% Tunisian."

According to the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, boat crossings across the central Mediterranean is the main route for irregular migrant entries to Europe. This route is also the most dangerous, figures by the International Migration Organization show.

"Our first priority is to save human lives. There's no doubt about that. You have seen that during these 24 hours we have carried out several rescue operations. There were three boats that broke down, whose passengers were rescued, and the rescue operations were not easy for us."

Italia’s PM enlisted the EU's help to forge a deal with Tunisia in a bid to stop the migrant boats in exchange for economic and other aid.

West African nations prepare to send troops to restore democracy in Niger
[An Nahar] Tensions are escalating between Niger's new military regime and the West African regional bloc that has ordered the deployment of troops to restore Niger's flailing democracy.

The ECOWAS bloc said on Thursday it had directed a "standby force" to restore constitutional order in Niger after its Sunday deadline to reinstate ousted President Mohammed Bazoum expired.

Hours earlier, two Western officials told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named that Niger's junta had told a top U.S. diplomat they would kill Bazoum if neighboring countries attempted any military intervention to restore his rule.

It's unclear when or where the force will deploy and which countries from the 15-member bloc would contribute to it. Conflict experts say it would likely comprise some 5,000 troops led by Nigeria and could be ready within weeks.

After the ECOWAS meeting, neighboring Ivory Coast's president, Alassane Ouattara
...the former president-for-life of Ivory Coast. He actually beat his predecessor in an election before having to eject him from the presidential palazzo....
, said his country would take part in the military operation, along with Nigeria and Benin.

"Ivory Coast will provide a battalion and has made all the financial arrangements ... We are determined to install Bazoum in his position. Our objective is peace and stability in the sub-region," Ouattara said on state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
Niger, an impoverished country of some 25 million people, was seen as one of the last hopes for Western nations to partner with in beating back a jihadi insurgency linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group that's ravaged the region. La Belle France and the United States have more than 2,500 military personnel in Niger and together with other European partners had poured hundreds of millions of dollars into propping up its military.

The junta responsible for spearheading the coup, led by Gen. Abdourahmane Tchiani, has exploited anti-French sentiment among the population to shore up its support.

On Thursday night after the summit, La Belle France's foreign ministry said it supported "all conclusions adopted." U.S Secretary of State Antony Blinken said his country appreciated "the determination of ECOWAS to explore all options for the peaceful resolution of the crisis" and would hold the junta accountable for the safety and security of President Bazoum. However,
there is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened...
he did not specify whether the U.S. supported the deployment of troops.

The mutinous soldiers that ousted Bazoum more than two weeks ago have entrenched themselves in power, appear closed to dialogue and have refused to release the president. Representatives of the junta told U.S. Under Secretary of State Victoria Nuland of the threat to Bazoum's life during her visit to the country this week, a Western military official said, speaking on condition of anonymity
... for fear of being murdered...
because of the sensitivity of the situation.

Russian foreign ministry backs ECOWAS efforts to resolve crisis in Niger
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Regnum] Russia supports the mediation of the Economic Community of West African Countries (ECOWAS), aimed at finding ways out of the crisis in Niger, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported on August 11.

“We believe that the military way of resolving the crisis in Niger can lead to a protracted confrontation in this African country, as well as to a sharp destabilization of the situation in the Sahara-Sahel region,” the message says.

At an extraordinary summit in Abuja on August 10, ECOWAS decided to prepare for the deployment of a reserve force of the organization that could carry out an armed invasion of Niger in order to free ousted President Mohammed Bazum . The organization instructed the committee of the chiefs of defense staff to use reserve forces to restore constitutional order in Niger, where the rebellion took place. In turn, the Nigerian military declared its readiness to rebuff any foreign intervention.

Also, the rebels at a meeting with arrived in Niamey and. O. U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland threatened to kill deposed President Bazum if neighboring states invaded the country.

Nigeria expressed its readiness to send a military contingent of 25 thousand people to Niger. It was joined by Senegal, Benin and Côte d'Ivoire.

The military coup in Niger took place on July 26. The presidential guard blocked Bazum with his wife and son in the residence and announced his overthrow.

Alexei Zaitsev, Deputy Director of the Information and Press Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, said on August 9 that Moscow supports the settlement of the situation in Niger and opposes the use of force by ECOWAS.

Britain
Migrant channel crossings top 100,000 since 2018
[Dawn] More than 100,000 migrants colonists have crossed the Channel on small boats from La Belle France to southeast England since Britannia began publicly recording the arrivals in 2018, official figures revealed on Friday.

Some 755 migrants colonists were detected on Thursday on 14 small boats headed for England’s southern coast, the UK interior ministry statistics showed, the highest tally on a single day this year.

Those boats bring the number of arrivals so far this year to nearly 16,000, and takes the total since counting the perilous cross-Channel journeys started in 2018 to 100,715.

Also on Friday, officials were relocating asylum-seekers from a barge docked off the southwest English coast after Legionella bacteria was found in the water only days after the migrants colonists had been moved aboard. The interior ministry said none of the 39 who arrived on the vessel this week had shown symptoms of Legionnaires’ disease, which is caused by the bacteria but is not contagious.

"The health and welfare of individuals on the vessel is our utmost priority," a ministry spokesperson added.

The Channel crossings have become a highly contentious political issue and prompted the UK government to introduce legislation barring asylum claims by all arrivals via the Channel and other "illegal" routes. The new law also mandates their transfer to third countries, such as Rwanda, but both policies are on hold amid a court challenge over the legality of sending migrants colonists to east Africa. The plans have been condemned by migrant advocates, including the United Nations
...the Oyster Bay money pit...
’ refugee agency.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s government claims it has been forced to pursue the hardline deterrents as the surge in cross-Channel arrivals increasingly stretches resources.

2023 NUMBERS LOWER
Britannia’s asylum system is facing a huge backlog, a delay that rights groups assert is of the government’s own making. At the end of March, more than 130,000 asylum-seekers were in limbo, still waiting for their applications to be processed.

The cost of housing those applicants and other migrant arrivals has reached more than six million pounds ($7.6 million) a day, according to officials, as they resort to using hotels and other temporary accommodation.

But the move to house migrants colonists aboard the "Bibby Stockholm" barge has irked both locals, including the local Conservative MP, as well as rights campaigners.

Sunak, who made "stopping the boats" one of his five key aims in 2023 ahead of an expected general election next year, has insisted his strategy is prevailing, despite the arrivals.

The issue is set to remain prominent, with migration a perennial top concern of voters, particularly those who typically opt for his Conservatives.

The final tally of cross-Channel arrivals in 2023 appears set to be lower than the previous year for the first time since the route began to grow in popularity at the end of the last decade. Just 299 migrants colonists made the journey in 2018. During 2020 it had climbed to 8,466 while last year saw a record 45,755 arrivals.

Baja California's attorney general unexpectedly resigns, citing "personal reasons"
[SDUT] "Please don't kill me!"
Ricardo Iván Carpio was elected by Congress and began what was supposed to be a six-year term in January 2022

Baja California’s attorney general, Ricardo Iván Carpio, presented his resignation Thursday, citing personal reasons, officials said.

He will be replaced by Rafael Orozco, who has been serving as the office’s lead prosecutor and second in charge. Orozco will be in charge while the Baja California Congress carries out the process of appointing a new attorney general.

"The pursuit of justice is an important task, so the women and men who make up the State Attorney General Office will continue to do their best to guarantee justice and fight impunity," the Attorney General’s Office said in a statement.

The Attorney General’s Office not only prosecutes crimes but is also the lead investigative agency in the state.

Baja California Gov. Marina del Pilar Ávila on Friday recognized Carpio’s tenure and said she would send a list of candidates to Congress to choose the next attorney general.

"Carpio’s work at the helm of the Baja California Attorney General’s Office has revitalized its institutional capacities while generating others that will allow for better investigations for the benefit of society, a legacy that will last for generations to come," she said in a statement.

Carpio’s resignation comes unexpectedly. A day earlier he held a press conference to talk about recent homicide cases in the state.

Carpio was elected by Congress in January 2022 for a six-year term.

The murders of Tijuana journalists Margarito Martínez and Lourdes Maldonado took place at the beginning of his term. In both cases, the men who carried out the killings have been sentenced, but not the individuals suspected of ordering the acts. .

The office under his leadership also identified a suspect in what Carpio has described as the serial killings of female sex workers in Tijuana. A Los Angeles County man was arrested and is awaiting extradition to Mexico to face charges in at least one of those killings.

India-Pakistan
Pak supremes rule judgments review law unconstitutional
[GEO.TV] In a unanimous verdict on Friday, the apex court ruled that the Supreme Court (Review of Judgments and Orders) Act 2023 was "unconstitutional", dampening the hopes of ex-PM Nawaz Sharif
...served two three non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf, then by the courts...
and Jahangir Tareen who were seeking to challenge their lifetime disqualifications.

Both Nawaz and Tareen were disqualified under Article 62 of the Constitution by the SC. Had the verdict today been in favour of the petitions, both leaders would have gotten an opportunity to challenge their disqualifications, keeping in view their political ambitions amid the upcoming general elections in the country following the completion of the tenure of the National Assembly.

A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial and comprising Justice Ijazul Ahsan and Justice Munib Akhtar had heard multiple petitions challenging the law, enacted in late May.

Ghulam Mohiuddin, Zaman Khan Vardak, the Jurists Foundation, through its CEO Riaz Hanif Rahi, and the Pakistain Tehrik-e-Insaf
...a political party in Pakistan. PTI was founded by former Pakistani cricket captain and philanthropist Imran Khan. The party's slogan is Justice, Humanity and Self Esteem, each of which is open to widely divergent interpretations....
(PTI) had challenged the vires of the act.

Attorney General for Pakistain (AGP) Mansoor Usman Awan had asked the court — during earlier hearings of the case — to dismiss the pleas, explaining that it broadens the court's jurisdiction and does not curb its powers.

However,
there's no worse danger than telling a mother her baby is ugly...
PTI lawyer Ali Zafar, on behalf of the party's Secretary General Omar Ayub, had maintained that a change in the apex's powers could not be made through legislation alone and required a constitutional amendment.

On June 19 after six hearings — from June 7 to June 19 — the bench reserved its verdict.

The CJP today read out the decision in the presence of the AGP, petitioners, and a large number of lawyers.

"The Supreme Court Review Act is against the Constitution," CJP Bandial said, adding that the verdict was passed unanimously.

The detailed 87-page long order struck down the Act as null and void and of no legal consequence.

It said the Act is "repugnant to and ultra vires the Constitution [...] being beyond the legislative competence of the Parliament."

Religious Ideology Of Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir
[MEMRI.ORG] The religious ideology of Pakistain Army chief General Syed Asim Munir, who believes in jihad, albeit those jihads that are sponsored by his army, has attracted the attention of Islamists who are smitten by the fact that he is the first hafiz (i.e., one who has memorized the Koran) to become army chief. So, it is not surprising that in a public address in Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistain's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire...
on August 7, 2023, General Asim Munir relied on terminology from jihadi discourse, using words like shari'a, kalimah, khawarij, jihad fi Sabeelillah ("jihad in the path of Allah"), and so on.

On August 7, a meeting of elders, tribal chieftains, Islamic religious scholars, and others, known as a grand jirga, was called in Peshawar to shape public opinion against Tehrik-e-Taliban

Iraq
US wants long-term security ties with Iraq: Pentagon official
[Rudaw] The United States is looking for a long term security relationship with Iraq that includes a professional, nonpartisan Peshmerga force, a senior US defense department official said on Friday, days after Baghdad and Washington held a landmark meeting on security cooperation.

Earlier this week, Washington hosted Iraqi officials for the first meeting of the Joint Security Cooperation Dialogue. "We envision an enduring defense partnership with Iraq beyond the focus on defeat ISIS [Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
, ISIS] campaign at this moment in time, and we’d like to begin setting the foundation for the future of our defense partnerships," a Pentagon brasshat said in answer to a question from Rudaw in briefing with news hounds on Friday.

Representatives of the Ministry of Peshmerga were part of the Iraqi defense delegation that visited Washington for meetings at the Pentagon on Monday and Tuesday, with US Assistant Secretary of Defense Celeste Wallander leading the American side.

"Peshmerga forces are a critical element of the broader Iraqi security forces and recognized of course under the Iraqi constitution. We want to see both increased cooperation between the Peshmerga and the Iraqi security forces, as well as that the Peshmerga are also appropriately resourced and funded to do their job,’’ the Pentagon official said on Friday.

The US and other Western allies are helping to modernize the Peshmerga, a key part of which is unifying the Kurdish forces under the ministry and ending political control of Kurdistan Region’s security forces. This unification has been stalled for several years. American officials have called on Kurdish leaders to speed up the Peshmerga reforms on several occasions and raised the issue again in the Joint Security Cooperation Dialogue, as well as calling for more increased cooperation between the Peshmerga and Iraqi security forces.

The Pentagon official made it clear that the US would like to continue working with and training with the Peshmerga, but "to do that, US commitment to working with nonpartisan unified, unified brigades has been made quite clear to the politicianship."

In their dialogue this week, the American and Iraqi defense officials also discussed concerns about Iranian-backed gangs within the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF, of Hashd al-Shaabi in Arabic).

"Yes, we have concerns about gangs outside the control of the government of Iraq. We think that any state actors arming, equipping, training or funding groups is inherently destabilizing and undermines the illusory sovereignty of Iraq and the security of Iraqi people. And we've seen cases where non-state groups are not accountable to the Government of Iraq, have caused harm and civilian casualties. So fundamentally, that's destabilizing. Of course, there's concern about the recently passed Iraqi budget and let's be very frank about this," said the Pentagon official.

The recently passed Iraqi budget law allocates nearly $2.7 billion for the PMF.

#1  Dec 9,2021: U.S. President Joe Biden and Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi sealed an agreement in July to formally end the U.S. combat mission in Iraq by the end of 2021.
Iraqi Shi'ite militants have vowed to wage new attacks against coalition forces in 2022.
Western security and diplomatic officials say that calling the shift a withdrawal, as it has sometimes been characterized by the Iraqi government, is misleading because it changes little in terms of number of forces based in Iraq.
The U.S. has kept around 2,500 troops in Iraq since 2020. The Western officials say that most of those forces have been operating only in a training and advising role for some time.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Palestinian trio indicted for seriously wounding man in Jerusalem terror stabbing
[IsraelTimes] Teens from Bethlehem, one of them a minor, accused of illegally entering Israel before setting out to Gilo neighborhood to find a Jew to murder

Three Paleostinian teenagers were indicted Friday for seriously wounding an Israeli man during a recent terror stabbing in Jerusalem’s Gilo neighborhood.

According to prosecutors, 18-year-old Muhammad Alabiyat, 19-year-old Wizan Abiyat and a 17-year-old minor from the West Bank city of Bethlehem purchased three knives on July 20 and after praying at a mosque, traveled to nearby Gilo to commit an attack.

The suspects allegedly drove from the Paleostinian town of Beit Jala on a dirt road, then got out and continued by foot to Gilo.

After reaching the Jerusalem neighborhood, they searched for a Jewish victim to stab while keeping their knives concealed, a statement from prosecutors said.

The group eventually approached a young man on the street and began to converse with him to ensure he was Jewish, and upon realizing he was stabbed him several times being fleeing back toward Bethlehem, the indictment alleged.

One of the knives remained lodged in the back of the victim, 25-year-old Or Sayer, while another was found by security forces at the scene. Prosecutors said the third blade remained with one of the suspects.

Israeli forces detained the suspects two days later in a cave, where the prosecution said they hid out following the stabbing after first changing clothes.

The trio was charged with committing a terrorist act of attempted murder, unlawful possession of a knife and unlawful entry into Israel.

Prosecutors requested the Jerusalem District Court order they remain in jug until the end of proceedings.

Sayar has remained hospitalized at the Shaare Zedek Medical Center since the attack. The hospital said that upon arrival, he was in very serious and unstable condition, and was taken into surgery. It later said he was stable but still at death's door, sedated and intubated, in the intensive care ward.

The delegation toured an Iron Dome battery and "Hezbollah’s terrorist tunnels" in northern Israel, the Israeli army said Friday on the X platform, formerly known as Twitter.

"With this trip, House Democrats reaffirm our commitment to the special relationship between the United States and Israel," Jeffries said before his second visit to Israel this year.

"We reiterate our ironclad commitment to the safety and security of Israel and to the existence of Israel as a prosperous and Jewish democratic state," he added.

The Israeli army said it held "productive discussions" with the U.S. delegation on shared security challenges & "strengthening the ironclad bond between Israel and the U.S."

Iran reportedly slowing some nuclear enrichment, diluting high-grade stockpile

Iran transfers 5 Iranian-Americans from prison to house arrest ahead of release
More on this story from yesterday.
[An Nahar] Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Führer or maybe both. They hate Jews Zionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
has moved five Iranian-Americans from prison to house arrest in exchange for billions of dollars frozen in South Korea, U.S. and Iranian officials said Thursday, as part of a tentative deal that follows months of heightened tensions between the two countries.

Iranian officials at the United Nations
...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships...
told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named that the prisoner transfer marked "a significant initial step" in the implementation of the agreement, which is still being negotiated and could eventually lead to the full release of the Americans.

Iran acknowledged that the deal involves $6 billion to $7 billion that were frozen as a result of sanctions. Iranian officials said the money would be transferred to Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates. Home of nutbag holy manYusuf al-Qaradawi...
before being sent on to Iran if the agreement goes through.

The final transfer of the money — and the release of the five detainees — is expected in the next month or so due to the complicated nature of the financial transactions, officials said.

"My belief is that this is the beginning of the end of their nightmare and the nightmare that their families have experienced," Secretary of State Antony Blinken told a news conference in Washington, adding that more work would be necessary to free the five.
And will be some other Americans or Israelis' nightmares from the terror funding (money is fungible, assholes)
State Department officials spoke to the prisoners on Thursday, he said.

The deal unfolded amid a major American military buildup in the Persian Gulf, with the possibility of U.S. troops boarding and guarding fat merchantmen in the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of all oil shipments pass.

The agreement is bound to open U.S. President Joe The Big Guy Biden
...46th president of the U.S. S Joe's wife and daughter weren't killed by a drunk driver. He didn't graduate with three or even two degrees, wasn't in the top half of his law class, and his daddy didn't come home from a hard day's work in the mines and play football with the guys. The NAACP hasn't endorsed him every time he's run....
to fresh criticism from Republicans and others that his administration is helping to boost the Iranian economy at a time when Iran poses a growing threat to U.S. troops and Mideast allies.

U.S.-based lawyer Jared Genser, who represents one of the prisoners, said the five will likely be held at a hotel under guard. There are "simply no guarantees about what happens from here," he said.
Shafaq News adds:
The White House announced on Friday its commitment to imposing restrictions on the use of any funds released as part of an agreement that led to the release of five Americans placed under house arrest in Iran.

White House front man John Kirby assured news hounds that the United States would be closely monitoring and have "full visibility" about the allocation and utilization of any Iranian funds that might be released.

Iran's mission to the United Nations
...boodling on the grand scale...
disclosed that individuals holding dual Iranian and American citizenships were released from Tehran's Evin prison on Thursday as part of a prisoner exchange agreement between Tehran and Washington. The mission further detailed that the accord, facilitated by a third party, also encompasses the release of five Iranians detained in the United States, coupled with the unfreezing and transferring of Iranian funds from South Korea to Qatar. A source familiar with the indirect talks between the U.S. and Iran shared insights with Rooters, outlining the transferred funds' stipulations. Once relocated from South Korean financial institutions to an alternative entity, the money is expected to be relegated to strictly humanitarian purposes, such as acquiring food and medicine.
