#1  'Did not restrict'?

I wrote out a rant, realized it would only insult your Virginia boys and girls and deleted it. With all the 'lurkers' and an agency that can't be trusted with a simple thing as standing up for their own CinC, it's best to be discreet.

I would put my 'BAH!' on record though.

ISIS affiliate in Egypt’s Sinai swears allegiance to new ISIS leader
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Egypt’s ISIS
...embracing their inner Islamic Brute...
affiliate, Sinai Province,
...previously known as Ansar Bayt al Maqdis, which originally was the Sinai province of Al Qaeda before moving their allegiance to the kewl new guys....
has sworn allegiance to the new leader named by the group following the death of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the affiliate said on Telegram on Saturday.

Sinai Province, which has waged an insurgency against the Egyptian state, posted pictures of around two dozen fighters standing among trees, with a caption saying they were pledging allegiance to Abu Ibrahim al-Hashemi al-Quraishi.

Quraishi was named on Thursday in an audio message that also confirmed Baghdadi’s death and vowed Dire Revenge against the United States. US special forces killed Baghdadi in a raid in northwest Syria.

ISIS has resorted to guerrilla attacks since losing its last significant piece of territory in Syria in March, and has posted dozens of claims of responsibility for attacks in several countries since Baghdadi’s death.

Egyptian ground and air forces launched a major offensive focused on North Sinai early last year. Military operations and hard boy attacks continue in the area.

Five candidates to run in Algeria’s presidential election next month
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Five candidates will run in Algeria’s presidential election next month, including two former prime ministers, the head of the election authority said on Saturday, amid mass protests rejecting the vote.

The authorities have repeatedly said the December 12 vote would be the only way to get out of a crisis Algeria been facing since the resignation of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika
...10th president-for-life of Algeria. He was elected in 1999 and served on his third or four terms. When he announced for the fifth, or maybe it was the sixth, visibly doddering, a grateful nation rose up in its wrath and threw him out...
in April under pressure from protesters.

Candidates for the December 12 election include former prime ministers Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Ali Benflis, former culture minister Azzedddine Mihoubi, former tourism minister Abdelkader Bengrine, and Abdelaziz Belaid, head of the El Mostakbal Movement party.

They were announced by Mohammed Chorfi, head of the election authority.

Twenty-three candidates had applied to the election authority, but most failed to meet requirements which include collecting signatures from 25 of the country’s 48 provinces. Those who were rejected will be allowed to file appeals.

Tens of thousands of protesters have been staging weekly demonstrations to reject the election, saying it will not be fair as some of former president Abdelaziz Bouteflika’s allies are still in power.

Europe
EU Official: Poland, Hungary, and Czech Republic Broke EU law by Refusing to Take in Migrants
[LI] Hungary, Poland, and the Czech Republic are in breach of the European Union law by refusing to take in migrants under the bloc’s mandatory migrant quota scheme, the top EU legal adviser says. According to Advocate General Eleanor Sharpston, who advises the European Court of Justice (ECJ), the members countries of the bloc have "no legitimate security grounds to reject the quota scheme" that proposes to settle hundreds of thousands migrants arriving in Europe.

The eastern European countries are facing legal action at the top EU court, the European Court of Justice (ECJ), for blocking the EU plan to assign each country with a quota of migrants to take in. The Eastern European countries have so far frustrated Brussels’ efforts to impose mandatory quotas on member states for the mass resettlement of migrants from North Africa and the Middle East swarming the continent through the Mediterranean route.

Poland rejected the Advocate General’s statement citing the government’s duty to ensure the safety of its people. "Our actions were dictated by the interests of Polish citizens and the need for protection against uncontrolled migration," Piotr Muller, spokesman for the Polish government, said.

The German public broadcaster Deutsche Welle reported the legal advisory given to the top EU court:

#14  Great discussion about multiculturalism, not just in the EU, with Christopher Caldwell here and on Hungary and Orban in particular here.

From "Hungary and the Future of Europe":

...since there would not be enough imported Hungarians to man the Hungarian economy, it seemed [to the EU leadership that] Hungary would need to do what western European countries had done: open the doors to mass immigration from the Arab world and Africa.

On this, Orbán would not budge. As he saw it, the combination of Anglophone Hungarian businessmen and waves of manual laborers disinclined to learn the beautiful, impossible Magyar language would mean the end of Hungary.

Migration from the south [by Muslims], Orban believed, whether orderly or disorderly, would produce a special kind of country, of the sort that did not exist in western Europe until the most recent decades but which had been the norm in Hungary’s Balkan neighborhood until quite recently—not just in the Habsburg and Romanov empires but also in 20th-century Yugoslavia. Such countries, he told a group of Christian intellectuals in 2017, run the risk of having their culture wiped out:

"They will become countries with mixed populations, with a Christian element and a non-Christian element which has a strong religious identity. And if I judge the laws of biology and mathematics correctly, the ratio between these two elements will continuously shift away from Christianity and towards the non-Christian religious communities…. [H]ow this will end is mathematically foreseeable."

Orbán wanted desperately to avoid that. “[W]e want a Hungarian Hungary and a European Europe,” he said.

Rescue ship with 88 migrants in Italian waters for shelter from wind and waves, commercial ship rescues 200 more
[AlAhram] A humanitarian rescue ship with 88 migrants colonists aboard says it has entered Italian waters off Sicily to shelter from strong wind and waves.

Sea-Eye said its vessel Alan Kurdi was awaiting assignment of a safe port by Italia on Friday, a week after its passengers were taken off an unseaworthy smugglers' boat in the Mediterranean off Libya.

The charity's officials say a diplomatic solution with EU countries to take some of the migrants colonists was reached earlier in the week but there's still no disembarkation permission.

Separately, the Italian coasties found the bodies of two men, apparently North Africans, in a dinghy adrift off Sardinia Friday.

Authorities said it wasn't clear when they died, or if others might have been earlier aboard the dinghy, which had neither oars nor motor.

Aid group says Italian supply ship rescues 200 migrants

[AlAhram] A private aid group says an Italian offshore supply ship has saved some 200 migrants colonists in waters off Libya.

Alarm Phone, a charity hotline for refugees in distress in the Mediterranean Sea, says the Asso Trenta has the migrants colonists aboard after rescue late Friday and early Saturday.

It was not immediately known where the migrants colonists might be taken.

To discourage the arrival of migrants colonists, Italia has refused docking to humanitarian rescue ships. Asso Trenta is a commercial vessel.

On Saturday, the Alan Kurdi, operated by a German charity, was sailing to a southern Italian port with 88 rescued migrants colonists. Italia gave it docking permission followed pledges by four fellow Europe

an Union countries to take 67 of the migrants colonists, while Italia will take the remaining 21.

Iraq
Iraq’s top clerics warn of foreign interference amid largest anti-government demonstrations yet
[FRANCE24] Iraq’s Shiite religious establishment on Friday condemned attacks on peaceful protesters after a month of massive anti-government demonstrations in which security forces have killed at least 250 people.

Tens of thousands of Iraqis gathered in Baghdad's Tahrir Square on Friday in the biggest demonstrations since anti-government protests erupted a month ago.

Protesters clashed with security forces on two bridges leading from Baghdad’s Tahrir Square to the heavily fortified Green Zone where the government is headquartered. At least 50 people were maimed by tear gas and rubber bullets, according to security and medical officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to news hounds.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Who is Abu al-Ata: The man behind rocket fire from Gaza Strip
[Jpost] While Hamas, a regional Iranian catspaw, is the ruling party in the Gaza Strip, the group has in recent years been losing control over the street. And the vacuum is being filled by Ata, Tehran’s main man in Gaza.

The escalation in tensions between Israel and Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with an iron fist by Hamaswith about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
didn't completely surpise Israeli Intelligence. It seems on the surface that the recent rounds of rockets were unforseen, as border tensions with Gaza have been relatively less eventful over the past two months.

Yet there has been an air of concern in the Israeli Defense Ministry lately over the man currently suspected of being the culprit behind the latest escalation with Gaza, Baha Abu al-Ata.

The head of Paleostinian Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah...
’s (PIJ) al-Quds Brigades in Gaza, Baha Abu al-Ata is considered one of the top forces of Evil in the blockaded coastal enclave. While Hamas is the ruling party in the Gaza Strip, the group has in recent years been losing control over the street. And the vacuum is being filled by Ata, Tehran’s main man in Gaza.

While PIJ is a Sunni Jihadist movement, it’s supported by Iran, which directs the group through PIJ’s chief Ziad Nahala who resides in Damascus.

Ata has been involved in planning attacks against Israel, manufacturing arms and upgrading long-range rocket launching capabilities. The second largest group in the Gaza Strip after Hamas, PIJ has been assessed by military intelligence as a factor increasing the risk of an escalation in the blockaded coastal enclave, since it is not under the direct control of Hamas and acts independently for its own interests.

Ata was identified by the IDF as having ordered the firing of rockets towards southern Israel in April. According to the IDF, under Ata, PIJ is trying to carry out low-level attacks and maintain a low profile so that Hamas doesn’t figure out its ambition to undermine long-term ceasefire between Hamas and Israel.

"There are dozens of countries around the world which are trying to improve the humanitarian situation in the Strip, but at the same time, there is one man inside Gaza and one man outside the Strip trying to torpedo that," former IDF spokesperson Brig.-Gen. (ret.) Ronen Manelis said at the time.

Today Hamas is no longer the number one threat in the Gaza Strip. PIJ is responsible for several violent attacks on IDF troops during the Great March of Return protests along the Gaza border fence, including the first death of a soldier along the Gaza border since Operation Protective Edge in 2014 when St.-Sgt. Aviv Levi was shot by sniper near Kibbutz Kissufim. Another soldier was struck by sniper fire in the area less than a week after Levi was killed. In late January, an IDF officer was lightly maimed in the same area after his helmet was struck by sniper fire along the Gaza Strip security fence, in an attack for which PIJ grabbed credit.

Like Iran's Soleimani and Hezbollah's Nasrallah, Ata may also now be in the IDF’s crosshairs. He too has survived several liquidation attempts, including during Operation Pillar of Defense in 2012. While the IDF continues to hold Hamas responsible for all that occurs in the Strip, one day the retaliation against PIJ will come.

Twitter suspends accounts of Palestinian Quds News Network
[Al Jazeera] Twitter has suspended multiple accounts of an independent Paleostinian news website considered one of the primary sources of news on Paleostine and the Israeli occupation.

The suspension of Quds News Network accounts, which have hundreds of thousands of followers, is the latest in a series of actions involving social media sites including Facebook in either temporarily or permanently banning Paleostinian accounts.

Twitter's move follows the website's censorship by the Paleostinian Authority (PA) two weeks ago, where it was one of the more than 50 news websites and pages that the PA accused of violating a cybercrime law in the Occupied West Bank.
Update from The Times of Israel at 2:15p.m. ET:
Twitter has suspended accounts affiliated with the Hamas and Hezbollah terror groups as well as a Palestinian news outlet.

As of Sunday, access to Hamas’s English and Arabic handles as well as several of those belonging to Hezbollah’s Al-Manar TV was no longer available.

Access to three Quds News Network accounts was also cut off.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran's Ayatollah Khamenei renews ban on talks with U.S.
[JPost] Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei sought to prevent negotiations with the US administration of Donald Trump, arguing the Americans will not make any concessions. "Negotiating with the US is futile," he said Sunday. "Those who believe that negotiations with the enemy will solve our problems are 100% wrong."

His logic is that the US won't make concessions. He also said the US wants to bring Iran to the table by forcing it to its knees. "Nothing will reduce sanctions and pressure," he said. In addition he pointed out that Iran now has precision guided missiles that can travel 2,000km that can hit a target within a meter of accuracy. So why would Iran need to negotiate away its rights to these missiles, he argued.
Relations between the two foes have reached a crisis over the past year after Trump abandoned a 2015 nuclear pact between Iran and world powers under which Tehran accepted curbs to its nuclear program in return for lifting sanctions.

"They are currently saying ‘don't be active in the region, do not help the resistance [i.e Hezbollah], don't be in some countries [i.e Syria], and stop your missile defense and production,'" the Ayatollah noted. He said that if Iran bends to these demands then the US will demand Iran become a secular country and let women walk around showing their hair. "American demands will never stop."

Washington has reimposed sanctions aimed at halting all Iranian oil exports, saying it seeks to force Iran to negotiate to reach a wider deal. Khamenei has banned Iranian officials from holding such talks unless the United States returns to the nuclear deal and lifts all sanctions.

Release of Syria regime soldiers causes pro-Turkish militia friction
[Rudaw] The Ottoman Turkish government’s release of 18 Syrian regime soldiers captured by Syrian National Army (SNA) fighters has caused schism within the Ankara-backed force, with some SNA members calling the handover of the hostages by their leadership a "betrayal."

The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire...
launched Operation Peace Spring on October 9, taking control of Sari Kani (Ras al-Ain) and Gire Spi (Tal Abyad) from the Kurdish-led Syria Democratic Forces (SDF).

However,
there's more than one way to skin a cat...
Ottoman Turkish deals with both the US and Russia paused the operation for about 11 days ‐ with the exception a few skirmishes - giving Syrian regime forces time to deploy troops to the Syria-Turkey border after it struck a deal with the SDF.

As the pause drew to an end, fighters from the SNA, an umbrella group of Turkey-backed proxies, attacked Syrian Arab Army (SAA) soldiers near Sari Kani on Tuesday, capturing 18 of them. Footage purportedly showing abuse by the captors later emerged.

Turkey confirmed the capture of the regime soldiers and said that it was in discussion with Russia to secure their release. The hostages were handed over to Russian military police on Thursday.

Some pro-Turkey groups have since accused SNA leaders of "betrayal" for allowing the handover to occur.

The SNA’s General Body of the Revolution office in Aleppo said that they were "shocked" by the news of the handover, calling it a "betrayal to hundreds of thousands of detainees" from opposition groups being held in regime prisons.

"Syrian National Army's leadership is responsible for this ridiculous skit," it said, before demanding an explanation.

The SNA brigade believed to have captured the soldiers justified the release of the hostages by saying it was a "temporary tactic" to facilitate Ottoman Turkish and Turkey-backed proxy operations in northern Syria.

The Second Brigade handed the soldiers over "because the circumstances of battle impose some temporary tactics which paves the way for the other side [Turkey and its proxies] to continue the battle."

The SNA-affiliated Jarabulus Nightmare News channel on Telegram filled with messages denoting treachery and division. The channel also reported that tens of fighters have since left the SNA's ranks.

Furor over the handover process has instigated further criticism of the group’s commanders, including accusations of corrupt action.

Commanders have been accused of each confiscating a number of houses in Afrin - occupied by Turkey and its Syrian proxies in 2018 - and using them as rental homes.

With brigades differing in ideology and motive, keeping the at least 14,000 SNA fighters assisting Operation Peace Spring under the same SNA umbrella has proven difficult.

The SDF has claimed that a great number of these fighters used to be Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS
...embracing their inner Islamic Brute...
) members, who later joined the SNA with Turkey’s knowledge.

SNA fighter conduct has been criticized internationally. Accusations have included the targeting of civilians.

Days after Operation Peace Spring began, executive director at Human Rights Watch Kenneth Roth said the operation was likely to see the same violations previously enacted by Turkey and its proxy militias.

"Turkey and its allies have previously unlawfully killed, arbitrarily arrested, and wrongfully displaced civilians. This military operation risks repeating these abuses unless they take steps now," he said in the monitor’s October 11 report.

US military calls on Kurdish forces in northeast Syria
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] US military vehicles on Saturday entered a Kurdish-held area in northeastern Syria and met with officials, AFP correspondents and a local source said, in the second such visit since an announced US pullout from the Ottoman Turkish border area.

Beige-colored armored vehicles flying the American flag pulled up at the headquarters of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces outside the city of Qamishli.

They also passed by the People’s Protection Units (YPG) who have spearheaded the SDF, and Kurdish security forces in the area.

Two days earlier, a similar US convoy was seen further east along the border, outside the town of Qahtaniyah, in an area they used to operate in before Washington announced a military pullout last month.

A US-led coalition has for years backed the SDF in fighting the ISIS
...embracing their inner Islamic Brute...
group, but the announcement of an American withdrawal triggered a deadly Ottoman Turkish invasion against the Kurds on October 9.

A source who took part in one of the Kurdish-US meetings on Saturday said the Americans wanted to return to Qamishli.

"They’re coming to set up a major military post in Qamishli," the source told AFP.

Iranian police arrest more women for the 'crime' of dancing
[OBSERVERS.FRANCE24] Iranian officials detained three young female dancers who had thousands of followers on Instagram. According to our Observers in Iran, this is part of a wider crackdown-- in the past year, Iranian authorities have prosecuted many other dancers, but because they were lesser-known, their stories didn’t reach the media.

Sahra Afsharian, Sara Shariatmadari and Niloufar Motiei are known for shuffle dancing, which is a club dance characterized by repeatedly shuffling your feet inwards, then outwards. Each of them has tens of thousands of followers on social media, as well as many students. On October 8, state media YJC reported that these three dancers had been arrested and detained in the notorious Qarchak Prison, located about 40 kilometres southeast of the capital, Tehran. State media also reported that that many other dancers had also been arrested and were being prosecuted for "obscene content creation".
Video of Sahra Afsharian can be seen here. One can understand why the Mullahs are upset — so many bleached blond hair waves waving in all directions!

Lebanon president seeks to solve ‘complications’ before new PM consultations
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Leb’s president said on Saturday he will soon set a date for formal consultations with politicians to pick a new prime minister following Saad al-Hariri’s resignation this week, but is working to resolve some complications first.

President Michel Aoun
...president of Leb, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hizbullah...
is obliged to hold a formal period of consultations with members of parliament and designate the figure with the most support as the new prime minister who will be tasked with forming a government.

Aoun has not yet set a date for those consultations to begin, but said he had been making the "necessary calls" to lay the ground for them to start.

"The challenges in front of the future government require a rapid but not hasty approach to the designation process, because rushing in such cases can have harmful consequences," the presidency media office said in a statement. The statement said Aoun needed to resolve some complications but did not elaborate.

Prime Minister Hariri resigned on Tuesday after nationwide anti-government protests.

The protests have been less intense since he resigned, but demonstrators are still on the streets, and one of their main demands is for the rapid formation of a new government led by technocrats to carry out badly needed economic reforms.

Iran's Foreign Minister Will Send Letter to UN Chief on Tehran's Hormuz Peace Initiative
[SPUTNIKNEWS] Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif will send a letter to UN Secretary-General António Guterres
...Portuguese politician and diplomat, ninth Secretary-General of the United Nations. Previously, he was the UN High Commissioner for Refugees between 2005 and 2015. He was the Prime Minister of Portugal from 1995 to 2002 and was the Secretary-General of the Socialist Party from 1992 to 2002. He served as President of the Socialist International from 1999 to 2005. In both a 2012 and 2014 poll, the Portuguese public ranked him as the best Prime Minister of the previous 30 years...
regarding the so-called Hormuz peace initiative proposed by Tehran, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said on Saturday.

"Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif will soon send a letter on this issue to UN Secretary-General", the ministry's front man, Abbas Mousavi, said, adding that Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan, the abbreviation IRGC is a cognate form of Stürmabteilung (or SA), the term Supreme Guide is a cognate form of either Shah or Führer or maybe both, and they hate Jews Zionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
wanted to work together with the Persian Gulf countries to ensure the security of this region.

Mousavi also recalled than Iranian President Hassan Rouhani
...Iran's moderate president, which he is, relative to his predecessor, which doesn't mean he's anything but a puppet of the nearest holy man...
had already sent letters to the heads of the Gulf Cooperation Council and the Iraqi leadership with the initiative presented by him during the UN General Assembly.

"This shows the seriousness of intentions of Iran, which attaches importance to the countries of the region in ensuring stability and security in the Persian Gulf", the front man added.

Lebanese President Warns Against Haste in Forming New Cabinet After Hariri's Resignation
[SPUTNIKNEWS] A new Lebanese government should be formed quickly but without rash decisions that could lead to negative ramifications, President Michel Aoun
...president of Leb, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hizbullah...
said on Saturday, following the resignation of Prime Minister Saad Hariri
...Second son of Rafik Hariri, the Leb PM who was assassinated in 2005. He has was prime minister in his own right from 2009 through early 2011. He was born in Riyadh to an Iraqi mother and graduated from Georgetown University. He managed his father's business interests in Riyadh until his father's assassination. When his father died he inherited a fortune of some $4.1 billion, which won't do him much good if Hizbullah has him bumped off, too....
"Mr President sees that an incoming government will face a lot of challenges, which implies the need for a speedy process of its formation, but not a hasty one. Because haste in such situations could have negative consequences," the presidential press service said in a statement.

Hariri stepped down on 29 October after 13 days of protests over economic hardships. He has been asked to continue as caretaker prime minister until a new government is formed.

#6  As far as I'm concerned, either shave or grow a beard.

The scruff — the modern incarnation of the carefully curated Miami Vice look with electric razors offering alternate heads for how many days one wants to look unshaven — is all the rage at the moment among the shirt’n’tie crowd... and in romance novels. They’re all non-conforming together. (Yes, I am glad Mr. Wife finally shaved his off. But it’s his face, and it keeps him from exercising his need for novelty more creatively.)
