Egypt says it will 'deal only with elected government'
[Libya Herald] Egypt will only deal with the government appointed by the elected representatives of the Libya people, the Egyptian prime minister has said. He has also said that Egypt will fully collaborate with Libya on security issues. Egypt's security was Libya's security, he said, and Libya's security was likewise Egypt's.

Ibrahim Mahlab was speaking at a presser with Libyan Prime Minister Abdullah Al-Thinni at the offices of the Egyptian cabinet in Cairo following talks today between Thinni and Egyptian President Abdel Fatteh Sisi.

Security, both in Libya and on the joint border, and its impact locally and regionally was the main subject of discussion. Sisi was earlier reported in the Egyptian press saying that the situation in Libya and the presence of "terrorists" there would now be his top priority.

According to Mahleb, cooperation would be enhanced, especially on border control and in training for the Libyan armed forces.

For his part, Thinni said that Libya was facing a severe terrorist threat, not just in Benghazi but in Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
and elsewhere as well. Some towns had been taken over by terrorists, he said, alluding to Derna, and he again labelled Operation Dawn forces in the capital as terrorists. The government would not talk to them, he said.

Referring to Algerian plans to mediate between the rival factions in Libya, Thinni said that his government had received no invitation to any conference in Algieria. His statement is seen as an assurance to Egypt in view of the growing division between Algiers and Cairo over Libya.

#1  I can see Egypt and Algeria looking to carve up Libya between them.

Maybe, oh joy, a real war between them.

#2  ...Egypt has had a problem with Libya for many, many years, including at least one deterred attempt on Khaddafy Duck's part to invade, back in the 80s. As far as the Egyptian leadership goes (and I think this would have been the same with the MBs), they have a lot to answer for.

#3  Egypt says it will deal only with elected government''

Makes sense in the ME sort of way. You need to be a strong horse to hold the pro forma El Presidente elections. That would certainly be the leader that would be running a country.

#1  If they have proof - or even semi-proof - of who the financiers are, just make it public, real public. I can't imagine very many entities want to have their names attached to Boko Haram.
Then, take strong financial action against those who do continue assistance.

Arabia
Yemeni premier resigns amid Houthi pressure
[Iran Press TV] The newly-elected Yemeni premier has resigned amid protests against his appointment to the post by the president.

On Wednesday, Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi accepted the resignation by Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak after Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to Americaâ¢, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
Shia protesters slammed the government's choice.

Mubarak made the decision "in a bid to preserve the national unity and protect the country from divisions," he said in a letter to Hadi, in which he requested "to be relieved" of forming a new government.

Earlier in the day, Malik al-Houthi, the leader of Yemen's Ansarullah revolutionaries, severely criticized Hadi's Tuesday decision to appoint Mubarak.

The Ansarullah activists, who played a key role in the ouster of former dictator President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...
, have been staging demonstrations in the capital for more than a month, demanding resignation of the government over what they call its corruption and marginalization of the Shia community in Yemen.

Saudi Arabia, Qatar funding extremism: British commander
[Iran Press TV] A former British commander in Iraq says that Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
and Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates...
are accountable for globally spreading extremism.

In a recent interview with The Telegraph, General Jonathan Shaw said that both of the Arab states have ignited a "time bomb" by funding extremism that has triggered the rise of the ISIL.

Britannia's former Assistant Chief of the Defense Staff went on to say that the two countries have spent billions of dollars on funding Wahhabi and Salafist krazed killer groups.

Shaw also said Qatar and Saudi Arabia's rulers, who are now more threatened by their creation than any other countries, must lead an ideological struggle against the ISIL terrorists.

The former commander also referred to the current military campaign against the ISIL as "futile" unless the underlying Takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who must be killed...
ideology was also directly tackled.

"It (this ideology) is funded by Saudi and Qatari money and that must stop," he added.

The US and its allies, including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar and Jordan, have been conducting Arclight airstrikes against the ISIL inside Syria without any authorization from Damascus or a UN mandate for over two weeks.

According to a report published by The Telegraph, wealthy individuals in the Persian Gulf region have raised tens of millions of dollars for terrorist groups. The report also says Arab leaders have either chosen to ignore the problem or are complicit in the funding of the holy warriors in Syria and Iraq.

Missing Saudi may have joined IS: Kin
[ARABNEWS] The family of a missing Saudi student in Malaysia is concerned about his whereabouts amid growing fears that he might have gone to the war-zone in the Middle East.

According to a report, Mishal Al-Suhaimi was in Australia pursuing higher education, but there has been no word from him since Sept. 15.

He was reported to have left for Malaysia where the Saudi Embassy has been searching for him. His family is getting increasingly worried that he may have gone to join the fighters in the war zones in the Middle East.

The grief-stricken mother was quoted by a local daily here as saying that her son had contacted her sometime back asking for her permission to join the krazed killers, but she refused.

"He had something on his mind about joining the war," she said.

Saudi Ambassador to Turkey Adel Mirdad has confirmed their return stating that a number of Saudi youth had communicated with the embassy before Eid Al-Adha asking to facilitate their return.

He said the embassy has completed all the formalities for the returnees. Parents have played a crucial role in persuading them not to risk their lives in the war torn region and instead rejoin their families back home.

The Saudi Embassy in Canberra confirmed that it had received a call from Al-Suhaimi's family on Sept. 6 saying they had lost contact with him. "We immediately contacted relevant Australian authorities to know his whereabouts and we have got the information that Al-Suhaimi has left Australia," the embassy said.

DB police aware of JMB regrouping in West Bengal
[Dhaka Tribune] Concerns have developed in both India and Bangladesh over the reported regrouping of banned Islamist outfit Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh
The JMB is said to be the youth front of Al Mujahideen, the parent organization that began working toward establishing Bangladesh as an Islamic state in the mid 1990s which remains obscure even today. Other organizations, such as Jama'atul Jihad, JMB, Jagrata Muslim Janata Bangladesh (JMJB), Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HUJI), Hizbut Tawhid, Tawhidi Janata, Islami Jubo Shangha, Islami Shangha, Al Falah A'am Unnayan Shanstha and Shahadat-e al Hiqma are believed to be part of the Al Mujahideen network. The JMB at its peak was reported to contain at least 100,000 members, and an alleged 2,000-man suicide brigade, few of whom actually exploded. JMB allegedly received financial assistance from individual donors in Kuwait, UAE, Bahrain, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Libya. Reports have claimed that funding of JMB by international NGOs like Kuwait based Society of the Revival of Islamic Heritage (RIHS) and Doulatul Kuwait, Saudi Arabia based Al Haramaine Islamic Institute and Rabita Al Alam Al Islami, Qatar Charitable Society and UAE-based Al Fuzaira and Khairul Ansar Al Khairia. The top leadership of JMB was captured in 2005 and hung in 2007, which pretty much shot their bolt.
(JMB) mainly after two suspected Death Eaters of the group were killed on October 2 in a blast at a house in West Bengal's Bardhaman district.

The 32-year-old prime suspect, Shamim Ahmed alias Shakil alias Nayem alias Afzal Gazi, was a Bangladeshi. The other deceased is Shovon Mondol alias Shawpan alias Subhan, 22.

According to primary reports in Indian media, they were killed while making bombs.

More chilling information came in the media lately which claims that the bombs were being made in the Indian territory to carry out subversive activities in Bangladesh.

The Bangladesh authorities are yet to be informed "officially" by the Indian side about the latest development of the JMB operatives in West Bengal.

But the Sherlocks here are closely monitoring the developments.

JMB founder Shayakh Abdur Rahman in a statement in 2006 mentioned about the West Bengal chapter terming it to be their 65th unit.

The Detective Branch (DB) of Police suspect that two convicted JMB men snatched from a prison van earlier this year were now staying in West Bengal.

Quoting Indian intelligence, media says hailing from Dhaka, Shakil was a cadre of the JMB. He also had links with Jamaat-e-Islami

Shakil crossed the border to enter India illegally in 2009 and took shelter in Metiaburuje of Kolkata first. He started campaigning about so-called Jihad there under the guise of cloth trading as he had managed an Indian voter ID card.

Deceased Shovon hailed from Uttarpara Village of Purba Medinipur district.

Another injured in the October 2 incident was Abdul Hakim, from Mohammadbazar of Birbhum. He is undergoing treatment at Bardhaman Medical College Hospital at death's door.

From the spot, the Indian police recovered around 25 grenades, 10 hand bombs, and bomb making chemicals ‐ Ammonium Nitrate, Iron Oxide and Hydrogen peroxide in huge quantity.

The police also placed in durance vile

Shakil's wife Gulsana Bibi alias Rumi Bibi and Hakim's wife Alima Bibi soon after the incident. Owner of the house Hassan Chowdhury was also detained.

Shakil, Shovon and Hakim reportedly rented the house three months back and the two women used to stay with them, according to reports published in Indian media.

Interrogating the women, the Indian National Intelligence Agency claimed that the dear departed and the arrestees had been making bombs at the house to carry out destructive activities in Bangladesh.

Indian newspaper Hindustan Times published reports saying that the suspected JMB men had sent to Bangladesh four consignments of bombs in the last three months through courier service. The carriers were Kawser and Rasiq, the detainees said during interrogation.

French Family of 11 Believed to Have Left for Syria Jihad
[AnNahar] Eleven members of the same family from the French city of Nice are believed to have left for Syria, of whom some are suspected of planning to fight alongside jihadists, a judicial source said Wednesday.

The anti-terrorist section of the Gay Paree public prosecutor's office has opened an investigation into the disappearance of the family, acting on a "stack of evidence" pointing to their departure to Syria, the source said.

The family is believed to have left the country at the end of September.

The 11 include a man and his two sisters, their mother, and their respective spouses and children, including a baby, the source said.

Prime Minister Manuel Valls estimates that hundreds of French citizens have left to fight alongside krazed killer turbans in Syria.

Turkey Asks US To Ramp Up Air Strikes Against Islamic State
[Ynet] Turkey has asked the United States to step up air strikes to keep Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
bandidos bandidos holy warriors from seizing a key Syrian Kurdish border town, a senior Turkish official was quoted as saying on Tuesday.

"Our government and our related institutions have emphasized to US officials the necessity of immediately ramping up air bombardment in a more active and efficient way," Deputy Prime Minister Yalcin Akdogan said, according to comments published on the website of the television channel AHaber.
I was under the impression that Turkey was known for its terribly fierce and competent military. Why, then, do they not mount their airplanes and fly some bombing sorties themselves, instead of hiding behind the infidel Americans?
Because it's easier to get Uncle Sugar to spend the money and blood. Bombs and missiles cost money, as does aircraft maintenance.

Plus Erdogan has been playing both sides in this game. Getting the Turk military involved would make it harder for him to canoodle with the ISIS while they kill all the Kurds.

Navy to Commission Amphib Designed for Aviation with No Well Deck
Saturday will mark the formal commissioning of the Navy's newest amphibious assault ship, the USS America-- a big-deck amphib designed to more fully leverage the F-35B Joint Strike Fighter and the ability to air-drop Marines behind enemy lines.

Unlike previous Wasp-class amphibious assault ships, the America will not have a well-deck to launch connector vehicles that transport Marines and equipment from ship to shore over water. Instead, the America is specifically engineered for aviation. Compared with prior amphibs, the America has a larger deck space and hangar area for aircraft.
Oh, so it's an aircraft carrier that also carries Marines...
"We are changing the way we look at amphibious warfare. During D-Day you had amphibious assault vehicles go ashore with an assault on the beach. Now, we are looking more at Marine Corps aviation and how can we use those Corps assets we have on-board the ship to bring the fight inland. I think that this ship in particular gives us a tremendous capability to do that," said Lt. Dawn Stankus, a USS America spokeswoman.

In total, the America is configured to house up to 31 aircraft including as many as 12 MV-22 Ospreys and the CH-53 Super Stallion, AH-1Z Super Cobra, UH-1Y Huey, F-35 B Short-take-off-and-landing Joint Strike Fighter and MH-60 Sea Hawk helicopter, Stankus explained.

#6  This raises the question:

Why do that off a ship - and why have Marines at all if you're abandoning the waterfront and the heavy punch Marine Amphib Assault brings?

Fact is: despite the Marines pioneering this in the mid-late 1950's, ever since Operation Pegasus and Khe Sahn, the Army is the master of large scale airborne insertion doctrine (82nd Abn Div, 173rd Sky Soldiers Regt), and is the same for large scale Air Assault (101st Airmobile Div) and numerous company or battalion sized Air Cav or Air Assault elements. There's already prescednet: The 10th Mtn had a BCT (Bde sized element) air assault in off the Eisenhower back in Op Uphold Democracy. And the Army has the Rangers for kicking the door for follow-on forces in via insetion by airborne, air assault/fast-rope and even riverine and small boats.

Someone in the Navy doesnt like the Marines at all, and trying to strange the gator navy? Sounds like Fighter Mafia to me.

For the Marines to have their value, they have to have the heavy forces and be able to bring them in over the water without relying exclusively on wing/rotor assets. This is something the Army cannot do in decent numbers, even though it does have some assault boats mainly in the Guard and Reserve, but nothing that's even remotely scalable to what the Marines can do with an MAU or MAB. We need the Marines, and we need them Amphib/Heavy capable. This is damned foolish.

#9  A boatload or two of Marines with AAV 7's and air support will be on the beach faster than even a large fleet of helos or Sea Ospreys could deliver them.

Having watched an exercise at Pendleton/Oceanside a few years ago, I can say that from what I saw (although a training exercise), they can deliver large numbers in a very short order.

Twitter: gag on surveillance scope is illegal “prior restraint”
Twitter sued the Justice Department on Tuesday, saying the agency's virtual ban of detailing the scope of US surveillance on the microblogging site is an unconstitutional "prior restraint" of speech protected by the First Amendment.
Exactly right: government has very, very narrow limits what it can constrain prior to publication. This will eventually go to the USSC, but I can't imagine a law banning a telecom from reporting that it is subject to an NSL passes muster.
The San Francisco-based company's federal lawsuit concerns the broad limits the government has placed on Twitter over how it may characterize national security surveillance of Twitter's users—like National Security Letters and FISA court orders. The same is true for other companies, too.
Apple has figured out that privacy helps sell devices. Twitter will eventually figure out that if they don't offer sufficient privacy their customers will desert them. This means that they'll have to rewrite their software to encrypt everything from device to server and back again.
Twitter's ability to respond to government statements about national security surveillance activities and to discuss the actual surveillance of Twitter users is being 24 unconstitutionally restricted by statutes that prohibit and even criminalize a service provider's disclosure of the number of national security letters ("NSLs") and court orders issued pursuant to FISA that it has received, if any. In fact, the U.S. government has taken the position that service providers like Twitter are even prohibited from saying that they have received zero national security requests, or zero of a particular type of national security request.

The lawsuit says Twitter submitted a public transparency report to the Justice Department for approval and did not take part in a settlement with prosecutors that allowed companies to report, in ranges of 1,000, the number of secret orders they get for consumer data from US spies.

"The Defendants' position forces Twitter either to engage in speech that has been preapproved by government officials or else to refrain from speaking altogether," Miller wrote. "Defendants provided no authority for their ability to establish the preapproved disclosure formats or to impose those speech restrictions on other service providers that were not party to the lawsuit or settlement."
Doesn't their 'authority' come from the FISA law?
Twitter said in a blog post that it had tried to avoid litigation, but was unable to convince the President Barack Obama administration "to allow us to publish even a redacted version of the report."

In a statement on Wednesday, Sirajul Haq said it was unfortunate that no government responsible had been able to stop the drone attacks. He prayed for the killed ones and condoled the bereaved families. The JI leader also condemned the firing by Indian forces at the LoC for the last several days, saying such unprovoked border violations by the Indian troops called for a befitting response from this side of the LoC.

National Security Committee to meet over India-Pakistan border firing
[DAWN] The federal government has decided to convene a meeting of the National Security Committee (NSC) in the wake of ongoing firing at the Line of Control (LoC) and the working boundary dividing Pakistain and India.

The meeting is scheduled to be held at 10 am Friday, October 10.

"The committee is expected to meet this week in Islamabad with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
in the chair," a top government official told Dawn on Wednesday.

Along with the top military leadership, the PM's adviser on Foreign Affairs and National Security Sartaj Aziz, Minister for Defence Khawaja Asif, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan
...Currently the Interior Minister of Pakistain. He is the senior leader of the Pak Moslem League (N) and a close aide to Nawaz Uncle Fester Sharif. He is noted for his vocal anti-American railing in the National Assembly. However (comma) Khan told the U.S. ambassador that he was in fact pro-American but he and the PML-N would have to be critical of US actions in order to remain publicly credible. Khan cited his wife and children's US citizenship as proof, which means he's lying to one side or the other and probably both. He wears a wig, but you probably guessed that. since hair doesn't grow naturally in that shape or texture...
, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar and Information Minister Pervez Rashid will attend the meeting on Friday.

The military leadership will take the committee into confidence over the latest situation on the Line of Control and the working boundary, and a joint strategy would be adopted which may give a strong message to India, said the sources.

The meeting follows a rise in tensions across the Pakistain-India border, with as many as 10 civilians killed and over a dozen injured in the past three days in cross-border firing on both sides of the border.

Netanyahu Orders Clampdown On Jerusalem Unrest
[IsraelTimes] Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told police chiefs and the Shin Bet security service Tuesday to get tough on violent Paleostinian protest in Jerusalem, which has spiked in recent months.

"The prime minister instructed that forces be strengthened in areas of conflict and that they should act aggressively against rioters," his office said after a special meeting of the security chiefs, also attended by Jerusalem's mayor and government legal advisers.

"He stressed that the current situation must not be allowed to become the norm," it said.

Satellite Photos Reveal Massive Damage At Suspected Iran Nuke Facility
[IsraelTimes] Following Monday's mysterious blast at a suspected Iranian nuclear facility east of Tehran, satellite imagery obtained by Israel's Channel 2 and Israel Defense magazine Wednesday claimed to show extensive damage at the site.

Images of the facility taken Tuesday, a day after the reported kaboom which killed at least two people at the secretive Parchin plant, showed that several buildings at the location sustained heavy damage and some even collapsed, Channel 2 reported.

The photos "clearly show damage consistent with an attack against bunkers in a central locality within the military research complex at the Parchin military compound," Israel Defense wrote.

The images were taken by the French satellite Pleiades the morning following the blast, the source of which remains unknown.
Satellite images of the Parchin site before and after Mondayâs explosion can be seen at the link.
Iran's state news agency IRNA reported Monday that the kaboom occurred at a defense ministry plant east of Tehran for the production of explosives.

The Defense Industries Organisation, quoted by IRNA, said the fire broke out at the plant on Sunday night but it gave no further details.

The BBC, citing a report from the semi-official Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA), reported on Monday that the incident happened in an "kabooms production unit" at the site south-east of the capital Tehran.

According to ISNA, the blast was so powerful it shattered windows up to 12 kilometers away and the glare from the kaboom lit up the night sky.

Several arms facilities and military bases are located east of the Iranian capital, including Parchin. UN nuclear inspectors have been seeking to visit the site to answer concerns about Iran's atomic program.

The base lies at the center of allegations of past Iranian research into sophisticated explosives that can be used to detonate a nuclear warhead.

Tehran, which has denied inspectors access to Parchin since 2005, insists its nuclear program is for purely civilian uses. Israel and the West fear Iran is seeking to attain nuclear weapons.

In August Iran reiterated that it will not allow IAEA inspectors to visit the site.

#6  Blast effects 12 miles away

IIRC the first reports were of broken windows 12 KM away, so perhaps someone has changed units?
Also, the satellite photos don't look like enough damage close to the center to have caused damage that far away. Heard the blast, yes; & maybe felt it or had it rattle loose things. Still, a good-sized accident. Or 'accident.'

Or windows were broken prior, but the claim for replacement/repair was put in following the earth shattering kaboom explosion. SOP during the 50s and 60s when the zoomies would break the sound barrier with their jets in the States.
