Afghanistan
Afghan Taliban leadership splintered by intense US military campaign
Locals say insurgent commanders have fled areas they used to control in Kandahar as NATO forces bolster operations

#1  "Many argue that the Taliban are making a tactical retreat or returning to their sanctuaries in Pakistan to wait out the winter – views echoed by Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, the Taliban spokesman for the south."

Just like they have done every year this time of year. Why expect anything different? The difference will come this time if we can move in behind them as they leave and actually HOLD those areas and prevent them returning in the spring.

Sr. US Commanders want to go a-hunting in Pakistan
More Special Operations raids, because the Pakistani army refuse to curb their pets on their side of the border. Also, CIA-backed native Afghan militias, aka Counterterrorism Pursuit Teams, have been quietly doing more than just gathering information. The Paktika Defence Force has at least twice raided across the border on CIA orders. There are five others based in Kandahar, Kabul, Jalalabad and the rural provinces of Khost and Kunar.

The C.I.A.-backed militia near Khost recently deployed in the mountains along the Pakistan border, where it will spend the winter intercepting Taliban fighters. “The rockets we endured for the past seven months suddenly dried up,” the anonymous American service member said.

That's how it's done!

“The rockets we endured for the past seven months suddenly dried up,” the anonymous American service member said.

Any word on the well-being of those transporting the rockets?

#5  (An original version. A tad more bloody-minded.)

The keeper did a-shooting go
And under his arm he carried a bow
All for a shoot at a merry little doe
Among the leaves so green-o.

The first doe he shot at, he missed.
The second doe, he trimmed, he kissed.
The third doe went where nobody wissed.
Among the leaves so green-o.

The fourth doe she hem-in by tree,
Because of this she could not flee.
So cut her throat quite leisurely,
Among the leaves so green-o.

The fifth doe she did cross the brook.
The keeper brought her back with his crook.
Where she is now, you must not look,
Among the leaves so green-o.

Bangladesh
Check misuse of Islam
[Bangla Daily Star] Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday called upon Islamic scholars of the country to stay alert so that none could engage in destructive activities using the name of Islam.

The premier made the call while addressing the prize and certificate distribution ceremony of National Children and Juvenile Cultural Competition of Bangladesh Islamic Foundation at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC).

The present government would show zero tolerance against those who are smearing the name of Islam, the religion of peace, Hasina said.

The government will continue its drive against terrorism and extremism in the country, she added.

Bangladesh is a moderate democratic state and recognised as a model of religious harmony and peaceful coexistence of people of all faiths, the premier said.

She also said, "The genuine Olama-Mashayekh of the country had never been involved in terrorism and extremism, nor engaged now and will never allow such activities on the soil of Bangladesh as Islam does not permit it."

Criticising the previous governments for their anti-Islamic activities, Hasina said that they came to power using Islam as a tool, but allowed such notorious activities, which are not permitted in Islam.

#6  One day very soon things in England are going to go horribly, terribly wrong. I'm not sure what form it will take, but it's not going to be pretty.
Posted by: Secret Master || 12/22/2010 14:15 Comments || Top||

#7  I wholeheartedly agree with that statement by 'Secret Master'.

I grew up believing, as I had been educated to believe, the English were somehow gifted in being everything the nazis weren't, and hence how and why the English managed to defeat the nazi Germans.
Honestly that sounds contrived; however that was the impression created in my child’s mind, by English society.

Over the last ten years, and not for want to see life in a more scary perspective, I believe England’s social and moral fabric has been worn incredibly thin by fascist islamic hatred; this in conjunction with the lobbying lefts aggressive effort, to force the peaceful Christian majority in this country, to have to live by this hostile minority’s perverse ways.

We were once a nation of stoic, honourable and decent men. Though remember, the good, when the fall, always fall harder, faster and further than any other who fall.

This is why I believe it’s all now just a matter of time.

Barred from US, Galloway vows 'nothing will stop me'
George Galloway has been denied entry into America.

The former Respect MP, and notorious pro-Palestinian activist was due to speak in five US cities but was barred by US authorities. The Muslim Legal Fund of America, which organised the tour, said the ban was because of "visa problems".
He should be proud to be worthy of banning, when the Tariq Ramadan and the former Cat Stevens didn't make the cut.
Mr Galloway, who last month was disciplined by broadcasting standards monitor Ofcom for breaching the rules on impartiality during his Press TV show, instead used Skype to address crowds via webcam.

He reportedly said that the decision to ban him was not political, but down to a "technical glitch at Heathrow Airport."

He added: "My office is now in touch with the embassy in London to fix it."

A blogger present at a venue where the controversial politician addressed a crowd via the video link, said that Mr Galloway said: "Nothing will stop me. Not the government of what they call Israel; not the government of Canada or the US."

Mr Galloway has previously been deported from Egypt.

The tour was intended to follow a similar one in Canada earlier this month, which provoked anger from Jewish organisations. Despite the bar, Mr Galloway said he would still try and make a speech in Michigan in January.

Harry Potter actress life threatened by family for dating outside the faith.
One hint, the family are not members of the Methodist faith.
Lutherans?
Afshan Azad, the 22-year-old British actress who portrayed Padma Patil, a classmate of Harry Potter in the blockbuster Hollywood films, was reportedly beaten, called a 'whore' and threatened with death by members of her own family after dating a young, non-Muslim man.

According to the UK's Daily Mail, the young actress was assaulted and called a 'prostitute' after she met with a young Hindu man -- a potential relationship that apparently angered her father and brother. After her family members threatened to kill her, Azad reportedly fled the family's home through her bedroom window. The movie star is apparently so frightened of her brother and father, she has refused to confront them in court.
So what is the British 'justice' system doing about the assault and battery?

China-Japan-Koreas
US: N Korea will admit IAEA inspectors
[Iran Press TV] A US envoy says Pyongyang has agreed to allow international inspectors to access its nuclear facilities to ensure their uranium enrichment activities are peaceful.

New Mexico's governor Bill Richardson said North Korea would allow inspectors from the ineffective International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to examine the country's Yongbyon nuclear complex, Rooters reported.

"The specifics are that they will allow IAEA personnel to go to Yongbyon to ensure that they are not processing highly enriched uranium, that they are proceeding with peaceful purposes," Richardson told news hounds after arriving in the Chinese capital from Pyongyang.

Concerns rose in November about the North's nuclear activities after the revelation of a uranium enrichment program, which Washington claimed could be a second route to making nuclear weapons.

"I believe that's an important gesture on their part, but there still has to be a commitment eventually by the North Koreans to denuclearize, to abide by the 2005 agreement that says they will terminate their nuclear weapons activities," Richardson added.

UN inspectors were previously in North Korea as part of a process that involved participation in multi-national nuclear disarmament talks in return for international aid -- a process that ran aground two years ago.

Tensions between the Koreas hiked after an artillery exchange between the two neighbors on November 23, the first shelling of a civilian area in the South since the 1950-53 Korean War.

The South launched rounds of joint military exercises with the United States despite warnings from the North, threatening to respond to the "provocations."

Europe
Cameras that caught Stockholm blast ordered down
A shopkeeper who handed police video footage of the Stockholm suicide bombing says he will think twice before helping authorities again after being ordered to dismantle his security cameras for lacking the right permit.

Naresh Lakhwani owns a watch store in the downtown shopping district where the bomber blew himself up and injured two people on Dec. 11.

Lakhwani said Tuesday that security cameras he had installed outside the store caught the bomber on tape before the explosion and he didn't hesitate to hand it over to police.

"I have pretty much the whole sequence of events on there, with the bomber running up and down the street," Lakhwani said.

He said investigators were grateful for the tape, but that didn't stop the County Administrative Board, which handles permits for security cameras, to take action.

A legal expert at the board, Cecilia Forssell, said it had ordered Lakhwani to remove the equipment after receiving several complaints from people who had seen his surveillance video in Swedish media.

She said no one is questioning his decision to hand over the material to police, but the placement of the four cameras on a busy pedestrian street.

"This location is sensitive in terms of integrity," Forssell said.

I mean, rules are rules!

Sad. But it happens here all the time, too.
Posted by: Bobby || 12/22/2010 6:11 Comments || Top||

#2  I see the Administrative Board's point, and wonder if it should be the wave of the future in the west.

That is, Britain is just covered with cameras, with grotesque Big Brother, but ineffective, voyeurism.

Since nobody but a clinical moron can spend all day staring at dozens of camera monitors, without going crackers, they have reached the point where they are paying citizens to monitor other citizens, via the Internet, for rewards if they see anything unlawful.

This is just plain wrong. Terribly sorry if the intensely paranoid and invasive among us need their rush of thinking that they can peer at anyone whenever they want, that it will give them *power*.

The truth of the matter is that it is just dehumanizing, and diverts resources away from law enforcement and anti-terrorism. Britain is using cameras, which catch almost nobody, as an excuse to lay off policemen, who *do* catch criminals.

So the bottom line should be that there need to be a few cameras in public, usually to watch crowds, and people should feel free to monitor their own property. But otherwise, there needs to be a local controlling authority with a bias to not putting cameras everywhere.
Posted by: Anonymoose || 12/22/2010 9:10 Comments || Top||

#3  that's a pretty big leap, Moose. His cameras were his own security cameras (a watch store also usually has jewelry) and not, apparently, connected to a wider network for prurient snoopey voyeurism. I'd say the Board should issue him the permits on the spot and STFU
Posted by: Frank G || 12/22/2010 10:09 Comments || Top||

#4  Frank, permits generally involve fees, and probably the board wasn't collecting its fees, hence their indignation.

Great White North
More than 100 Canadians named on Al Qaeda-affiliated website
More than 100 Canadian-Arab Christians are listed on an Al Qaeda-affiliated website, apparently targeted because of their alleged role in attempting to convert Muslims.

Some of those named say concerned Canadian intelligence officials have contacted them.

The Shumukh-al-Islam website, often considered to be Al Qaeda’s mouth piece, listed pictures, addresses and cellphone numbers of Coptic Christians, predominantly Egyptian-Canadians, who have been vocal about their opposition to Islam.

In a forum on the website, one member named Son of a Sharp Sword, says “We are going to return back to Islam and all of the Mujahedeen (holy warriors) will cut off their heads.”

Three pages of the fundamentalist, Arabic-language website titled “Complete information on Coptics” sets to “identify and name all of the Coptics throughout the world who hope to defame Islam,” The website calls the Coptic Christians living abroad “dogs in diaspora,” a derogatory reference in Arabic.

Among those named on the Shumukh-al-Islam website is Samuel Tawadrus, a Coptic Egyptian living in Quebec.

“This is a direct threat against our lives,” Tawadrus said in an interview.

“They are trying to inform each other in hopes that someone can carry out this threat. They could be in Egypt and they could be here. Our names and our pictures are listed.”

Tawadrus’s picture and cellphone number were listed on the site.

Well I can tell you that the efforts continue in Canada to convert Muslims. I personally don't care if they convert to Christianity or to dogfood, either one don't bother me. But mess up my hockey game and there's gonna be trouble!

Home Front: WoT
Gun dealers to be required to report 'bulk sales'
To stem the flow of guns to Mexico, federal firearms regulators are proposing an emergency requirement that certain gun dealers along the southwestern border report bulk sales of so-called assault weapons beginning as soon as January.

Dealers would be required to alert authorities when they sell within five consecutive business days two or more semiautomatic rifles greater than .22 caliber with detachable magazines, according to the draft obtained by The Washington Post. Semiautomatic rifles such as AK-47s and AR-15s are favored by drug-trafficking organizations fighting the Mexican government.

ATF chief spokesman Scot Thomasson declined to comment.

The plan by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives revives a proposal that has languished at the Justice Department and in the Obama administration for several months, according to people with knowledge of the proposal who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter before it becomes public.
Because they didn't want the public to become wise to the matter before they had the spin in place ...
The idea of such a requirement is so controversial to many gun owners that administration officials proceeded cautiously for fear of provoking the National Rifle Association, sources said.
Wise move; the NRA would likely be provoked alright ...
The proposal could mark the gun lobby's first major showdown with the administration.

On Thursday, Chris W. Cox, the NRA's chief lobbyist, lambasted the plan as an attempt to create a national gun registry.

"This administration does not have the guts to build a wall, but they do have the audacity to blame and register gun owners for Mexico's problems," Cox said. "NRA supports legitimate efforts to stop criminal activity, but we will not stand idle while our Second Amendment is sacrificed for politics."
And thanks for supporting Harry Reid, who will shepherd this one through the Senate ...
Ted Novin, a spokesman for the gun industry group, the National Shooting Sports Foundation, noted the timing after the election and said, "This is an ill-considered proposal and one that ATF does not have the legal authority to unilaterally impose."

One of those pushing the administration to act was New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg's office and his policy adviser, John Feinblatt, who first proposed such a requirement early in the administration. "Sixteen months ago, we called for it," Feinblatt said. "It's time to do it."
Bloomberg is perhaps the most anti-gun person who's ever seriously been considered for national office. He's worse than Carter and Obama ...
Mexican President Felipe Calderon has called for the United States to reinstate an assault weapons ban that expired six years ago.
Say Felipe, why not control the violence on your side of the border, eh ...
More than 60,000 guns seized by Mexican police and military in the drug wars have been traced back to U.S. sources, the ATF has said. More than 30,000 police officers, civilians, journalists and cartel members have died in the struggle.

Under the plan, the ATF, which enforces federal gun laws and regulates firearm dealers, would send what is called a "demand letter" to dealers along the border asking them to report the multiple sales, ATF officials said.

Emergency approval would last six months, after which the requirement would end unless other action were taken, the draft states.
Which you could count on happening ...
Approval from the Office of Management and Budget "has been requested by Jan. 5, 2011," the document states. The ATF is expected to publish in the Federal Register on Friday a notice about the plan, which would affect about 8,500 gun dealers. Although the ATF proposes that the rule would begin as early as January, comments about the proposed rule will be accepted for the next two months.
And then ignored ...
When the NRA got wind of the idea last month, it warned its 4 million members in a "grassroots alert" that the administration might try to go around Congress to get such a plan enacted as an executive order or rule.
We'll see more of that the next two years, as Obama and Holder re-discover the concept of a 'unitary executive' ...

#3  By their standards, the Ruger Mini-14, WHICH IS LEGAL IN MEXICO, falls into the "assault rifle" category.

Anyone else think they're going to discover that the Mexican crooks are not getting their guns from the US, and that the reaction to learning that will be to bury the news and continue to act as if they are?

God knows they can't look at, say, Cuba, Venezuela, China, North Korea, Iran, etc.

#4  The serious weapons come from illegal government arms sales from Latin American governments, who in turn got them from the US Government in military aid. The whole charade here is based on only using the "private" weapons sales info tracked by ATF and ignoring the US government automatic weapons illegally sold in Mexico by foreign governments. Also, there is a notable lack pof information on the 100,000 AK-47s picked up by Venezuela and moving north.
With Cuba, Venzuela, Nicaragua, Equador and other leftist South American governments all cooperating with the narco-traffickers, do you relaly think the source of the serrious firepower, explosives and hand grenades are coming from Texas gun shows?
This is a convenient masque to support the Obambi administration anti-gun agenda. And how does the Mexican Government's failure to secure their border from incoming, legal weapons purchases in the US suddenly justify the curtailment of citizens rights, when not crime has even been committed on U.S. soil?

Al Qaeda in the Arab Peninsula's "Operation Hemorrhage" -- lots of small attacks to maintain a level of terror in the U.S. This particular plot was uncovered "earlier this year", whatever that means, to drip ricin and cyanide over salad bars and buffets around the country. Dr Aafia's attorney dissatisfied with US justice system
[Pak Daily Times] The attorney of Dr Aafia Siddiqui's family and executive director of the International Justice Network, Tina Monshipour Foster, has said that she is dissatisfied by the American justice system, especially after the court's decision on Dr Aafia's case.

Foster, who is not directly representing Dr Aafia in the case but works as her family lawyer, was addressing a presser along with some activists of Jamaat-e-Islami, including Pasbaan President Altaf Shakoor, front man Farooq Chohan, Dr Fauzia Siddiqui and IJN researcher Sara Hooward at the Lahore Press Club on Tuesday. Foster is founder of the IJN and serves as the lead counsel in several cases on behalf of detainees picked up by the US army and law enforcement agencies, mostly on the charges of terrorism from Pakistain, Afghanistan, Iraq and Yemen.

Her organisation is defending a number of significant al Qaeda suspects, including Fadi al Maqaleh from Yemen, Amin al Bakri from Yemen, Haji Wazir from Afghanistan, Redha al Najar from Tunisia, Jan Sher Khan and Amanatullah from Pakistain.

Commenting on Dr Aafia's case in which she was sentenced to 86 years in prison by a US federal court three months ago, Foster said Aafia was innocent.

She said she believed that Dr Aafia could never cause harm to anyone. The verdict was not only unjust to her, but it would cast a negative impact on her two children in Pakistain who might never see their mother again.

Kayani promises jobs for former Taliban fighters
[Pak Daily Times] Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Kayani on Tuesday promised jobs for former Taliban fighters.

Addressing youths at 'Rastoon', a rehabilitation training centre for youths involved in terrorism, the COAS said a peaceful Swat was in the best interest of all. He said that security forces had fought the war against terrorism for the people of Swat, to secure them from terrorists.

The COAS said the army would stay in Swat until the people's confidence was restored. He also told the youths, who had spent time with terrorists, that they were being given quality education and good training in the centre to become good citizens and that the forces would also try to provide them good jobs.

'No foreign troops allowed in Pakistan'
[Iran Press TV] Pakistain has ruled out the idea of any foreign troops operating on its soil, saying it is capable of defeating Orcs and similar vermin within its borders.
You can tell because they've already done it.
The announcement has been made by Pakistain's Ambassador to the United States Husain Haqqani while commenting on a report by The New York Times that cited unnamed Washington officials.

The report had disclosed that American military commanders in Afghanistan are preparing to go ahead with a plan to expand ground operations into tribal areas of Pakistain.

"Pak forces are capable of handling the bad boy threat within our borders and no foreign forces are allowed or required to operate inside our sovereign territory," Pakistain's Dawn news agency quoted Haqqani as saying on Tuesday.

US military has frequently stressed Pakistain's inability in tackling bad boys' sanctuaries while Pakistain declares it has made "enormous gains and tremendous sacrifices" in the fight against terrorism and militancy over the last two years.

Pakistain has deployed over 100,000 troops to its borders with Afghanistan where militancy has run rampant in the past few years.

NATO has denied the report saying the US has no intention of sending special forces into Pakistain's tribal areas.

"There is absolutely no truth to reporting in The New York Times that US forces are planning to conduct ground operations into Pakistain," NATO's deputy chief of communications, Gregory Smith, said.

US military's main strategy in fighting Orcs and similar vermin in Pakistain has been carrying out Arclight airstrikes. It has carried out over 100 non-UN-sanctioned drone raids in 2010.

Though Washington at times has claimed it has an agreement with Islamabad about such attacks, Pak authorities insist there has never been such a deal and that they view the Arclight airstrikes as repeated violations of the country's illusory sovereignty.

Iraq
Iraq parliament approves new govt.
[Iran Press TV] The Iraqi parliament has given the vote of confidence to Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's national unity cabinet, ending months of political impasse.

The vote came a day after Maliki presented his proposed national unity cabinet to the parliament.

Parliament in separate votes gave its approval to Maliki, three deputy prime ministers and 29 other cabinet ministers, as well as a 43-point government program aimed at liberalizing the economy and fighting terrorism.

According to the government front man Ali-al Dabbagh, the list presented to the parliament includes about 70 percent of the total cabinet.

Maliki stated that the Iraqi constitution must be preserved, and that the current election system should be reviewed.

Iraq had been left without a government since the inconclusive parliamentary elections in March which did not give any of the electoral slates the parliamentary majority they required to name a new cabinet.

Maliki's State of Law coalition won 89 seats in the elections on the heels of former Iraqi Premier Iyad Allawi's al-Iraqiya bloc, which secured 91 seats.

Iraqi politicians finally reached a power-sharing agreement in November, under which Maliki was named prime minister-designate and was given 30 days to name a government.

Iraqi Parliament’s session begins to vote on new cabinet
BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: The Iraqi Parliament’s 14th session was opened on Tuesday afternoon, with the attendance of Prime Minister Designate, Nouri Al-Maliki, to vote on his new cabinet, a media source in the Parliament said.

“The Session began, after citing verses from the Holy Quran, with a speech by former Prime Minister, Ibrahim al-Jaafari, to be followed by another speech by al-Iraqiya Leader, Iyad Allawi, and Kurdistan Coalition’s Representative, Fuad Maasoum, and the citing of the report of the special committee, asigned to prepare the new cabinet’s rogram and then PM Designate Maliki’s call on his cabinet’s candidates for voting on them; and after that the new cabinet members would read the constitutional oath. The PM and the Parliament’s Speaker will deliver their speeches,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Prime Minister Designate Maliki had announced that he would site the names of his new cabinet ministers and his government’s program to the Parliament session for voting on Tuesday, saying that he had managed to present the names of his candidate ministes for the Parliament’s Speaker on Monday night, within the defined constitutional period.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
France gives Lebanon 100 TOW missiles
France is giving Lebanon 100 HOT anti-tank missiles. Similar to the American TOW, the 24.5 kg (54 pound) HOT has a range of 4,300 meters and entered service in the 1970s. Israel has protested this gift, pointing out that many weapons given to the Lebanese armed forces recently have ended up in the possession of the Iranian supported Hezbollah militia that controls southern Lebanon.
The French didn't provide them so that the Lebanese army could take out Syrian T-72s ...
France counters, unofficially, that it has always supported only the Christian militias (who see France as an ancient patrol and ally), but cannot be responsible for whatever deals their Christian Lebanese allies make.
Thanks France. You really know how to make a bad situation worse.

Hamas escalates but doesn't seek war - Haaretz
(KUNA) -- The Israeli occupying army accused on Tuesday Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, of escalating attacks against Israel, but said the movement is not interested in full-scale war.

The army said its strikes at Gazoo came after some 30 mortar shells and 10 Qassam rockets were fired over the last two weeks at south Israel, Israel's Haaretz daily reported.

It believed that the increase in such attacks is related to Hamas' despair over stalled prisoner swap negotiations and lack of progress in reconciliation with Fatah.

Israeli Army Chief Gabi Ashkenazi had ordered the air force to strike eight Hamas targets in the Gazoo Strip overnight Tuesday, in light of the cut-thoat group's increased offensives against Israeli troops and civilians along the border over the last two weeks.

The multiple-target operation was the first of its kind in month, and came on the surface in response to an alleged firing of rockets at the western Negev over the last few days.

The Israeli military claims that Hamas is not interested in a full-scale escalation, but that the movement's echelon has grown into unprecedented despair regarding the lack of progress in prisoner swap negotiations with Israel and with the stalled reconciliation talks with the rival Fatah faction.

Iranian port in chaos as truckers strike over fuel price rise
by Michael Ledeen

The port of Bandar Abbas is one of Iran’s major shipping hubs, as well as a big naval base in the Straits of Hormuz, and the site of a big refinery. It is now in chaos. Thousands of trucks, many of them loaded with imported foodstuffs, commercial goods of all description, and even oil products, have blocked the city’s roads, effectively ending all movement in and around the port. The drivers simply shut down their rigs, took the coils out of the engines, and walked away. On the water, there’s a similar shutdown of the hundreds of small boats and ferries that usually carry thousands of people each day to the nearby islands as well as to Dubai. They have clogged the harbor, and nothing is moving.

This is the result of the Iranian regime’s cancellation of energy subsidies, proudly announced by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Sunday.

Also, according to the Washington Post, there are strikes in several Iranian cities.

#1  Their trucks have coils? I thought diesel trucks don't need 'em. One of the Iranian issues is the fact that diesel now costs $1.23/gallon, up from 6 cents/gal.
