#4 Arizona Sheriffs have a long reputation as individuals that should not be riled. Such as Sheriff Commodore Perry Owens:

Commodore Owens was the "Law of the West."
When outlaws defied him, they went to their rest.
He carried a forty-four by each side.
When he went after outlaws, they surrendered or died.

#7 I'm honestly surprised there hasn't been a call for the general militia.

#8 Sounds like the locals are getting fed up with it all. The Feds sticking their noses in to muck things up will only make the locals even more pissed. You don't want a bunch of pissed off locals, DC. Trust me.

#9 Personally, I'm worried about two things:

1) The correlation of forces - any of the cartels can field a lot more trigger pullers than the county has deputies and
2) the tendency has been toward more and more outrageous actions by the cartels.

Some of these mokes may just decide to jump the shark and set up a retaliation in force.

Mentioning a third thing will probably call down the wrath of R'burg on me, but the truth is the cartelistas have been fighting gun battles for years. I doubt the deputies have the same small-unit experience even with the likely leavening of ex-military.

#10 You are probably right, but no country could escalate like this country with the right CINC.

#11 A major fire-fight, with or without heavy casualties, would probably get the attention of the US gubbmint, at least.

#13 Mercato, it sounds as if they are planning on playing defense. Setting up sniper teams along infiltration corridors rather than sweeping the desert. This allows the Sheriff's to engage or not and choose the battlefield. I like the sound of it so far.

First battle will be announcement that they are Sheriff's followed by bad guys firing their weapons followed in turn by snipers taking them down. Depending upon how/when this is reported they might be repeated a number of times before the gangs figure out what's going on and change tactics/routes.

#15 RJ__ your scenario sounds good to me Hope it comes to pass and we don't need to go into Mexico to avenge LEO's killed protecting the border.

#16 A lot of holes in the desert, and a lot of problems are buried in those holes. But you gotta do it right. I mean, you gotta have the hole already dug before you show up with a package in the trunk. Otherwise, you're talking about a half-hour to forty-five minutes worth of digging. And who knows who's gonna come along in that time? Pretty soon, you gotta dig a few more holes. You could be there all fuckin' night.
