Lisa Franchetti takes over as acting Navy head - despite not being the first choice of Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news]
  • Chief of Naval Ops. Adm. Mike Gilday retired and handed the torch to Navy Admiral Lisa Franchetti in a ceremony

  • Franchetti will serve in acting capacity until officially confirmed by the Senate

#1  ...FWIW - I know a fair number of people in and retired from the USN, and to a man and woman they are all solidly behind ADM Franchetti. Her rep is a solid one, she's been out on the pointy end and done well, and those who worked with her speak well. For now, I'll congratulate her and wish her well.

Death toll in Hawaii fires rises to 99, and likely to increase, say officials
[IsraelTimes] Historic town of Lahaine almost entirely destroyed by fires that originated in Maui; about 25% of area covered so far by cadaver dogs and searchers

The number of deaths caused by the Maui wildfires stood at 99 on Monday, a figure that is likely to increase as search crews comb neighborhoods where flames moved as fast as a mile a minute. The blazes that consumed most of the historic town of Lahaina are already the deadliest in the US in more than a century. The cause was under investigation.

Gov. Josh Green said the search will take time and asked for space to do it properly. “For those people who have walked into Lahaina because they really wanted to see, know that they’re very likely walking on iwi,” he said at a news conference on Maui, using the Hawaiian word for “bones.” In an interview with CBS aired earlier Monday, Green estimated searchers will find the remains of 10 to 20 people per day until they finish their work. "And it’s probably going to take 10 days. It’s impossible to guess, really," he said.

Connecticut man seen brutally attacking police officer with hammer on body camera
She apparently missed both CQC and weapons 'suspect control' classes.
[FoxNews] A female Connecticut police officer was ferociously attacked by a hammer-wielding man, police said.

The Middletown Police Department said that on Saturday, August 12 at 6:33 p.m., authorities received a complaint about noise and breaking glass on a residential street.

Detective Karli Travis, who runs the Middletown Police Cadet Program and serves in the patrol division, was the first officer who responded to the call. She approached the resident on foot and police said that she immediately noticed that the suspect, 52-year-old Winston Tate, was wielding a blunt object.

Nigeria: Fresh charges filed against suspended central bank chief
[AFRICANEWS] Fresh charges have been filed against the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin 'Emefiele.

Local media Punch reported Tuesday (Aug. 15) that the prosecution sought to withdraw its initial charge of illegal possession of firearms to press 20 new counts at the Federal High Court of Abuja.

Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu suspended Godwin Emefiele in June.

He then appointed a special investigator to probe the activities of the country's apex bank and other related entities last July.

On July 25, the former CBN chief was arraigned in court and pleaded 'not guilty' to the two counts of illegal possession of firearm and ammunition filed against him by the Federal Government.

A judge granted him bail following his plea on July 25 despite objections from the attorney general's office. The case was adjourned until November and the start of Emefiele’s trial.

However,

US soldier admits trespassing North Korea illegally: state media
[GEO.TV] US soldier Private Travis King "confessed" to illegally intruding on North Korea
...hereditary Communist monarchy distinguished by its truculence and periodic acts of violence. Distinguishing features include Songun (Army First) policy, which involves feeding the army before anyone but the Dear Leadership, and Juche, which is Kim Jong Il's personal interpretation of Marxism-Leninism, which he told everybody was brilliant. In 1950 the industrialized North invaded agrarian South Korea. Twenty-one countries of the United Nations eventually contributed to the UN force opposing the invasion, with the United States providing around 90% of the military personnel. Seventy years later the economic results are in and it doesn't look good for Juche...
n territory, state media KCNA reported citing the investigation, as the soldier turned at the last moment from the airport where he was to board a plane and return to the US.

The report is the first official release about the US soldier King who was detained in July after deliberately entering the nuclear-armed country during a border tour.

The media KCNA noted: "Travis King confessed that he had decided to come over to the [North Korea] as he harboured ill feeling against inhuman maltreatment and racial discrimination within the US Army."

"The soldier also expressed his willingness to seek refugee in the DPRK or a third country, saying that he was disillusioned at the unequal American society," KCNA stated.
Keep him
The 22-year-old soldier had been facing disciplinary action as he had been under detention for two months and was recently released after facing assault charges.

According to the reports quoted by People, King's detention was the result of allegedly hitting a South Korean national in a club last September.

The reports indicated that apart from being in prison he was also directed to pay nearly $4,000 for allegedly damaging public property by kicking a police car and being uncooperative while he was being arrested, speaking ill of Koreans.

The People reported that King was released from the South Korean prison on July 10 and was left for the US to face further action.

However,
it's easy to be generous with someone else's money...
King ran toward North Korea while on a civilian tour of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) between the two Koreas.

United Nations
...aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society...
Command said in late July that a national of the US is believed to be taken into custody after he entered North Korea without authorisation while on a visit to the border.

"A US national on a Joint Security Area [JSA] orientation tour crossed, without authorisation, the Military Demarcation Line into the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)."

A witness also told CBS News at that time that the soldier laughed before running in between some buildings towards North Korea.

"We believe he is currently in DPRK custody and are working with our KPA counterparts to resolve this incident," it had added, referring to the North Korean People's Army.

Beijing baffled as China's fertility rate hits rock hard bottom
Having babies requires trust in the future.
[GEO.TV] The fertility rate in China has plummeted to an unprecedented low of 1.09 in 2022, as reported by the National Business Daily on Tuesday.

This alarming statistic is poised to create significant concern among authorities that are grappling with the challenge of increasing the country's declining birth rates.

According to the state-backed publication, China's Population and Development Research Center has confirmed this statistic, placing the country with the lowest fertility rate among nations with a population exceeding 100 million.

This data places China alongside countries like South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore, all struggling with low fertility rates.

In response to the unprecedented drop in population and the rapidly ageing demographic, Beijing has initiated a range of measures to boost birth rates, including financial incentives and enhanced childcare facilities.

Recognising the gravity of the situation, President Xi Jinping chaired a meeting in May solely focused on addressing this topic.

China has articulated a commitment to boosting population quality through investments in education, science, and technology. The aim is to maintain a "moderate fertility" level to sustain economic growth in the foreseeable future.

Numerous factors contribute to this downward trend, including high childcare costs that deter women from extending their families and traditional gender roles that perpetuate the burden of childcare on women.

GOP congressman says Chinese spies behind State Department hack also infiltrated his emails
[FoxNews] Chinese hackers infiltrated hundreds of thousands of US government emails.

The Chinese hacking group that gained access to State Department emails also obtained personal and political emails for Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb., the congressman announced Monday.

Bacon announced on X that the FBI notified him of the infiltration into his personal and campaign emails. He said the hackers had access to the accounts for nearly a month.

"I thank the FBI for notifying me that the CCP hacked into my personal and campaign emails from May 15th to June 16th of this year. The CCP hackers utilized a vulnerability in the Microsoft software, and this was not due to ‘user error,’" Bacon wrote.

"Thus, there were other victims in this cyber operation. The Communist government in China are not our friends and are very active in conducting cyber espionage. I’ll work overtime to ensure Taiwan gets every $ of the $19B in weapons backlog they’ve ordered, and more," he added.

The U.S. disclosed the larger alleged China spy operation in mid-July. The alleged spying operation is believed to have compromised hundreds of thousands of U.S. government emails.

U.S. Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns was among those hacked. He and Daniel Kritenbrink, the assistant secretary of state for East Asia, are believed to be the two most senior State Department officials targeted. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo was also among those targeted, U.S. officials told The Washington Post.

"The Department of State detected anomalous activity, took immediate steps to secure our systems, and will continue to closely monitor and quickly respond to any further activity," a State Department spokesperson said after the discovery.

Planned Parenthood says it will have to shut down if Texas wins lawsuit demanding millions
[BLAZE] The state of Texas is suing Planned Parenthood, and the organization argued that it may go out of business if the lawsuit is successful.

"This baseless case is an active effort to shut down Planned Parenthood health centers," said Alexis McGill Johnson, the president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

The lawsuit alleges that Planned Parenthood wrongfully accepted payment from Medicaid during a time when the state was suing to end those funds.

Texas first notified the abortion provider that it would end Medicaid payments in December 2016. The organization sued and got a federal court to agree with it, which allowed it to continue Medicaid. In 2020, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit reversed that ruling, and it was upheld in 2021.

The lawsuit says that Planned Parenthood filed a legal appeal rather than a legislative appeal and argues that all payments accepted by the organization after Feb. 1, 2017, were fraudulent.

Ramaswamy goes viral following exchange with LGBTQ activist: 'I respect that you have a different opinion'
[FoxNews] 2024 GOP hopeful knocks the 'tyranny of the minority' when asked about LGBTQ issues

Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy went viral following an exchange he had with a self-described "pansexual" activist who confronted him on LGBTQ issues.

Video of the exchange, which took place on Saturday at the Iowa State Fair, began with the activist asking what his "opinions on the LGBTQ+ community."

"Well, I don't think it's one community," Ramswamy responded.

"Really?" the activist reacted.

"Yeah. I mean, how could it be," Ramaswamy continued. "Just mash together an alphabet soup. Trans is fundamentally in tension with gay if you ask me. But what's your opinion?"

"I'm personally am pansexual," the activist responded, referring to the sexual orientation that has attraction towards all sexes and gender identities.

The activist then asked what his views were on same-sex couples.

"I don't have a negative view of same-sex couples, but I do have a negative view of a tyranny of the minority," Ramaswamy said. "So I think that in the name of protecting against the tyranny of the majority, and there are times in this country's history where we have had a tyranny of the majority. We have now in the name of protecting against tyranny of the majority created a new tyranny of the minority.

"And I think that that's wrong. I don't think that somebody who's religious should be forced to officiate a wedding that they disagree with. I don't think somebody who is a woman who's worked really hard for her achievements should be forced to compete against a biological man in a swim competition. I don't think that somebody who's a woman that respects her bodily autonomy and dignity should be forced to change clothes in a locker room with a man. That's not freedom. That's oppression."

"And so I believe that we live in a country where free adults should be free to dress how they want, behave how they want and that's fine, but you don't oppress you don't become oppressive by foisting that on others, and that especially includes kids because kids aren't the same as adults. And so I think adults are free to make whatever choices they want, but do not foist that ideology onto children before children are in a position as adults to make decisions for themselves.

"And so I think a lot of the frustration in the country, and if I'm being really honest that I also share, comes from that new culture of oppression where saying those things can actually get somebody punished. And in my case, it's part of why it's my responsibility to say them, and I respect that you have a different opinion. And that's okay. Part of what makes our country great is that you and I can be civil and have this conversation and that we live in a country that still gives us — each of us the right to speak to a presidential candidate and back and still say that we pledge allegiance to the same nation. So I think that's the beauty of our country. And that's my honest opinion."

The activist finished the exchange by thanking Ramaswamy, who in turn thanked her "for her civility as well."

The social media posts sharing their interaction collectively received over 13 million views.

This isn't the first time Ramaswamy went viral for embracing voters who might not have his support. At an Iowa campaign event in July, he was confronted by a liberal protester who interrupted his remarks by advocating for abortion rights. But as other attendees attempted to shout her down, Ramaswamy urged them to "let her speak" and encouraged her to come towards the front of the room to express her thoughts.

Ramaswamy has risen in GOP primary polls according to RealClearPolitics, placing third behind former President Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis with 6.4% percent support.

He is one of eight candidates who qualify for the first Republican debate on Aug. 23 that will air on Fox News Channel at 9 p.m. ET.

For example, if the guy who put the calking on the fire wall when this car went through the line left a twist of calk at the end, the judges will know which way the calk twists and if its not right the car is downgraded. The research into these cars is amazing... This is an honor for this school and the team that researched and built it...

Paralysed man who was the first to walk again thanks to breakthrough AI system reveals how it has now fulfilled his dream of standing at the bar with his friends
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] A paralysed man who was the first to walk again due to an Artificial Intelligence system has revealed how his dream of standing at the bar with friends was fulfilled as he enjoys renewed freedom.

Last week, Gert-Jan Oskam - supported by a walker - took several steps thanks to an AI system which reads his thoughts and instructs his legs to move.

Swiss researchers spent ten years developing the technology, but said it wouldn't have been possible without Oskam's extraordinary will to walk again.

'It's never been in my nature to sit still,' Oskam told The Times.

The technology has meant he's achieved a dream of his and is now able to stand at the bar and have a beer with his friends - to be able to feel like he is part of the conversation.

Oksam now hopes that thousands of other patients with spinal injuries can follow suit.

Incredible moment paralysed man walks for first time with implant

Oskam, 40, from the Netherlands, suffered a devastating bicycle accident while working in Beijing, China in 2011. He was told he 'didn't have a fighting chance' of walking again.

Spinal cord injuries can interrupt the communication between the brain and the region of the spinal cord that controls walking, leading to paralysis.

Professor Jocelyne Bloch, a neurosurgeon at Lausanne University Hospital: 'As a doctor I was taught that if a patient with a spinal cord injury did not recover in six months, then they would be in a wheelchair for ever.'

'This paradigm has now changed,' he added.

The new system means Oskam's thoughts are translated into movement through a 'digital bridge' created by Neuroscientists at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL).

One implant is placed in the patient's brain, above the region responsible for leg movements. Meanwhile, the second is placed on the region of the spinal cord that controls leg movement.

The brain signals are then converted into sequences of electrical stimulation of the spinal cord. In turn, this activates the leg muscles to achieve the desired movement.

Noël Keijsers, who is a senior researcher at Sint Maartenskliniek and has worked with Oskam closely, said: 'It's physically and mentally demanding. The technology is nothing without the right person.'

#3  Now they have been working on this stuff way longer than Musk has been famous, but I'm glad to see that it's reaching the stage of practical use.

#4  I can't wait for the part where they discover which synapses to fry to make a person unable to lie.

That will make lots of things interesting.

When You Sync with Someone, Your Brains Wave Together
'I was just thinking about you... when you called.'
[EN] At Scientific American, Lydia Denworth brought up an interesting topic earlier this month: The way that brain waves synchronize between two people who are communicating successfully:

Neurons in corresponding locations of the different brains fire at the same time, creating matching patterns, like dancers moving together. Auditory and visual areas respond to shape, sound and movement in similar ways, whereas higher-order brain areas seem to behave similarly during more challenging tasks such as making meaning out of something seen or heard. The experience of "being on the same wavelength" as another person is real, and it is visible in the activity of the brain.

— Lydia Denworth, "Brain Waves Synchronize When People Interact," Scientific American, July 1, 2023

For example, she tells us, "Couples exhibit higher degrees of brain synchrony than nonromantic pairs, as do close friends compared with more distant acquaintances." There’s a name for the study of such moments: collective neuroscience.

NOT A NEW DISCOVERY
Synchrony is not a brand new discovery but methods of tracking it (hyperscanning) have become more innovative in the last decade. The prospect of using synchrony to better track and understand success or failure in learning environments is attracting neuroscientists to the field. One study from the Basque research centre BCBL using electroencephalography (EEG) reported,
