IN NEW YEAR’S MESSAGE, CHINA ASKS TALIBAN TO PROTECT ITS CITIZENS – Weeks after an ISIS-K attack on a Kabul hotel that catered to Chinese nationals, China’s Foreign Minister called on his counterpart in Afghanistan to prioritize the protection of Chinese citizens in the country. He also told Minister Muttaqi that Beijing would be willing to expand cooperation when the Taliban form an inclusive government.
NATIONAL MOVEMENT FOR PEACE & DEMOCRACY FORMED – The NMPD issued a lengthy statement on the current political situation in Afghanistan and claimed the movement had formed with 5 political parties but was seeking to build a broader anti-Taliban coalition. The statement is critical of the Taliban’s ability to govern the country effectively and intends to use elections as a basis for a return to normalcy. It is not clear how much support the NMPD has.

THE SILENT KILLER – In addition to hundreds of deaths attributed to the recent cold spell in the country, at least 100 additional deaths have been reported in 15 Provinces from monoxide poisoning resulting from the use of natural gas and petroleum-fueled heaters in Afghan homes. With power outages and ‘brown-outs’ in many provinces, local residents have turned to propane, kerosene, and other forms of heat to stay warm. The use of such methods requires ventilation in confined spaces that can kill entire families. The total casualty count from this period of adverse weather is thought to be hovering around 500, but rural communities often do not report such deaths in their communities and the number may be significantly higher.
BIZARRE ARREST IN PAKTIKA FOR ONLINE CRITICISM OF TALIBAN – The Taliban continue to monitor social media feeds with two specialized cyber-investigation cells in the Ministry of the Interior. In the Paktika case, the brother of an anti-Taliban Afghan who is living in exile was arrested for his brother’s Facebook posts. The brother under arrest, Ayaz Bacha, is not thought to have expressed any anti-Taliban sentiment online but fell victim to a Taliban plan to intimidate exiled Afghans by harassing friends and family. Mr. Bacha’s condition is currently unknown. The arrest follows on the heels of an incident where a prominent Paktika poet was detained for writing a critical poem.

At least five people were maimed in a blast on Sunday at the gates of the mayor’s office in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu as gunfire continued to sound, a member of the ambulance service and a witness said.

Abdikadir Abdirahman, director of Aamin Ambulance Services, told Rooters that ambulance staff had so far evacuated five injured people from the scene of the blast.
Gunfire was still ongoing in the area and it was difficult for ambulances to access the area, he said.
"We were in the office and we were deafened by a blast, we ran out, gunfire followed," Farah Abdullahi, who works in the mayor’s office, told Rooters.
The mayor’s office is located in the local government headquarters building in a well-guarded area of Mogadishu.
Roads in the area have concrete barriers and multiple roadblocks. The building is about one and a half kilometers away from Villa Somalia, the president’s office.
Security forces immediately put the area under lockdown but an exchange of gunfire between the army and the assailants was ongoing, an intelligence officer who only gave his name as Ahmed, told Rooters.
"Our Mujahideen have stormed the well-guarded apostate local government headquarter of Mogadishu, we first started with suicide bombs and then foot fighters entered the building after killing the building guards," Abdiasis Abu Musab, al-Shabaab’s military operations front man, said in the statement.
Al-Shabaab frequently carries out bombings and gun assaults on targets in Mogadishu and across the country.

Officers were called to the Parkman Bandstand Monument in the Boston Common around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday evening about a protest.
When they arrived, they saw Dowell allegedly spray-painting "ACAB," which stands for "All Cops Are Bastards," and "NO COP CITY," an apparent reference to a police training facility in the suburbs of Atlanta that has sparked protests after officers shot and killed a protester who allegedly opened fire on them, injuring one, earlier this week.
While police arrested Dowell, a group of 20 protesters "began to surround officers while screaming profanities though megaphones on the public street causing traffic to come to a standstill," according to police.
The protesters were "interfering with the arrest" and "an officer was hit in the face and could be seen bleeding from the nose and mouth."
Dowell will be arraigned in Boston Municipal Court.

A teenage boy from of East Jerusalem was prevented from carrying out a stabbing attack in the capital’s Old City, the Israel Police said Sunday.
The suspect, 13 years old, from the Issawiya neighborhood, was found to be carrying a switchblade.
Officers and Border Police on patrol noticed the teenager acting suspiciously in the Old City on Saturday night. They apprehended him and during a search of his possessions discovered the knife.
He was arrested and taken away for questioning. An initial investigation found that he planned to carry out a stabbing, police said.
The suspect was to be brought for a remand hearing on Sunday. The investigation is ongoing.
Jerusalem District Police Commander Doron Turgeman praised officers’ vigilance, saying their quick response foiled an attack.
The incident came a day after a Paleostinian man was rubbed out as he tried to carry out a stabbing attack at an illegal settlement outpost in the West Bank.
