Little is known about what remains of those bases, and that many were in the country’s most volatile provinces.
According to the report, some were completely handed over to Afghan cops, others are vacated in a way in which they could be occupied again if the US and Officials consider it necessary.
It is unclear how much immobile equipment is left at each of the closed bases.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo agreed on the plan to reduce American troops to 2500 by mid-January, saying getting the troops out of harm’s way in Afghanistan is the mission set.
"President Trump has been very clear we’re going to protect and secure the homeland, but we’re not going to have our young men and women in harm’s way when it doesn’t deliver real security benefits for the United States and for our allies," Fox News quoted Pompeo.
"The president to date has said that we’re going to go from where we are today, something just over 4,000, to around 2,500" troops" Pompeo said to Fox News, adding that "the threat from terrorism around the world — from Islamic extremism, Islamic terrorism — is real. It doesn’t just emanate from Afghanistan".

[LIBYAREVIEW] On Saturday, the General Command of the Libyan National Army (LNA) announced the arrest of seven bully boyz affiliated with Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) in Ubari, southwestern Libya. In a statement, LNA front man Ahmed al-Mismari said that Special Operations units of the Tariq Bin Ziyad Brigade and the 116th Infantry Brigade carried out an operation earlier on Saturday in the al-Taraqin al-Sharib neighborhoods of southwestern Libya, targeting bad boy hideouts.
Al-Mismari pointed out that seven AQIM holy warriors were arrested, including Hassan al-Washi, an al-Qaeda Commander who returned from Mali during the past week, and Omar Washi.
He noted that LNA forces seized large quantities of ammunition, weapons and very important documents.
The LNA front man said that this operation comes within the framework of security operations aimed at pursuing and eliminating Takfiri ...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who must be killed... terrorist cells, enforcing the law, maintaining control over its entire geographical territory, securing its citizens, and achieving and preserving national security.
Militants have killed at least 40 people on a farm in Borno state in northeast Nigeria, three sources told Reuters on Saturday.
The attack, at Kwashebe Zamarmari in the Jere local government area, happened late morning local time as the workers were harvesting rice, according to a village leader, a local fighter with the Zamarmari group and a police source.
A search by the authorities for the attackers has been mounted.
The military and police did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province are both active in northeast Nigeria, where insurgency has reigned for a decade.
Food prices in Nigeria have risen substantially this year, in part due to insecurity in food-producing areas, according to politicians. Flooding in northwest Nigeria earlier this year also destroyed thousands of hectares of rice paddy.

[DW] Over 700 people in El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras were arrested on charges including terrorism, murder, kidnapping and extortion. The US-backed operations primarily targeted the MS-13 and 18th Street gangs.
The US won’t be backing a repeat under a Harris/Biden administration — their inherited staff recall their druggie years fondly.
Authorities in El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras arrested several hundred suspected street gang members in sweeping raids this week, officials announced on Friday.
The cross-border law enforcement actions were part of a US-backed effort called "Operation Regional Shield."
"The US Department of Justice and our law enforcement partners in Central America are committed to continued collaboration in locating and arresting gang members and associates engaged in transnational crimes," said US Attorney General William Bar in a statement.
TERRORISM, MURDER, KIDNAPPING CHARGES
In El Salvador, criminal charges were filed against more than 1,150 suspected members of organized crime groups, primarily related to MS-13 and 18th Street gangs.
By Friday, the country's national civil police arrested 572 of the suspects on charges including terrorism, murder, kidnapping, money laundering and human trafficking among others.
Guatemala arrested 40 people after executing 80 search warrants. Arrest warrants were served to 29 people already in jug. The US Department of Justice said all of the people involved in Guatemala were members of MS-13 or the 18th Street gang.
During the raids in Guatemala, police seized drugs and filed charges for extortion, illicit association, conspiracy to commit murder and extortive obstruction.
In Honduras, police arrested 75 members of the same two gangs and carried out more than 10 search warrants. Five law enforcement agents, including a police commissioner, were among those arrested in the operations in Honduras.
CROSS-BORDER COOPERATION
The attorney general's office in El Salvador said the raids were part of the fourth phase of the US-backed operation, which saw cross-border cooperation between the three Central American countries involved.
The MS-13 and 18th Street gangs are considered some of the most dangerous criminal organizations from Central America and are a cause for much of the violence in the region. The gangs have also spread to the United States, with President Donald Trump ...The tack in the backside of the Democratic Party... making combating MS-13 a priority for his administration.
SLIDESHOW: ONE OF MOST VIOLENT MOSTLY PEACEFUL COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD
Honduras has one of the highest homicide rates in the world. In 2011-2012, there were 86 homicides per 100,000 people. That amounted to 7,172 murders a year in a country of some 9 million people. In 2018, the homicide rate fell to 40 per 100,000 people, according to government statistics. In comparison, in 2015 there were some 5,000 homicides in the EU, where the population is 500 million.

[AA.TR] Police arrested 45 suspects Friday during an international operation against a drug-trafficking network from Brazil into Europe, Europol said Friday.
"This international sting, led by the Portuguese, Belgian and Brazilian authorities, was carried out simultaneously by agencies from three different continents, with coordination efforts facilitated by Europol," EU's police agency said in a statement.
The network imported at least 45 tonnes of cocaine into main European seaports, with profits exceeding €100 million ($120 million) in the course of six months, the statement said.
A total of 180 houses were raided.
"Over €12 million [$14 million] in cash in Portugal, €300,000 [359,000] in cash seized in Belgium and over R$1 million [$187,000] and US$169 000 in cash seized in Brazil," as well as 70 luxury vehicles were seized, it said.
In addition, financial assets of 10 individuals were frozen in Spain.
The EU noted the operation is the "biggest ever crackdown" against a drug ring smuggling cocaine from Brazil into Europe.

Long, lots of photos, stream of consciousness reporting. As an aside, Mr. Yon really likes The Epoch Times.
[MichaelYon] Since my September return to America, I’ve personally witnessed many actions and protests ranging from Oregon, Washington State, Washington D.C., Pennsylvania in Harrisburg and Philadelphia, back to D.C. for more, to Atlanta, and finally to Gainesville, to Florida where a goat stopped my rental truck in Levy County threatening to ram.
D.C. because I was invited to the White House on 01 December, and to Vice President Pence’s residence on 08 December. I did not even bring a suit to America, so am rushing to get one. Only in America can I go from dressing homeless in Portland to watch BLAMTIFA attack police, to getting invited to the White House.
So far, I personally witnessed ANTIFA in action in Portland, Atlanta, and D.C.
Morale is low for ANTIFA in Atlanta and Portland. ANTIFA fighting skills are weak. They exist because nobody stops them.
All 85 of these street photographs were made by me on Saturday at four or five rallies/protests. I say four or five because some protests are difficult to separate. Where does river meet sea? There is a parallel in wars. You might get into five firefights in one day: was that five separate fights, or one long firefight with long breaks in action?
Having been to hundreds of protests around the world, patterns emerge: most of the largest protests consisted of countless smaller actions hobbled into one Big Label such as "Pro-Government" or "Anti-Government."
Many rallies/protests are conventions where hundreds of ’vendors’ come to sell their stories. Cameras come for the crowds. Crowds come for cameras. Often works.
Political Street Theatre is related to but separate from LARPing. LARP is Live Action Roll Playing: The cameras roll and behavior changes.
Political Street Theatre occurs at places like Black Lives Matter, Inc. Plaza in Washington, D.C. where BLACK LIVES MATTER, Inc. painted gang markings on the road near the White House. And so, cameras are out there nearly 24/7 on tripods for anyone who comes out to make a play. One person can come out there and make a play for the world.
If you're curious as to why #Antifa "Journos" were desperate to take down Kitty it's because he posted the raw unedited footage of the riots and didn't lie about it
They want 100% control of the narrative. This is shown in the Notes from a Antifa/BLM streamer meeting in #Seattlepic.twitter.com/IyrbeSKjqL

Once this election is sorted out one way or another...
I honestly expect to see arrests of Anti-FArt and Black Marxist Lives Matter minions and street level leaders for nothing more than a face and political appeasement.
Whatever happens I fully expect the upper echelon/$$$$ funders to fade back into the wood-work until the 2024 elections, then rekindle more minions.

Stealing the election was just the necessary 1st step. What follows is the important work of crushing all opposition and subjugating the populace. BLAMTIFA will play an important role. I can see that eventually Antifa(think SA) will be suppressed but not BLM (SS)

I expect BLM to be, once again, kicked to the curb at least until the next Presidential election. They still haven't worked out all the kinks in their election fraud machine as indicated by the recent revealations. They will go all-out in 2022 to get a supermajority in the House and take over the Senate as well as start in on the State legislatures to prevent them from gumming up the works like in PA recently. As soon as they can they will stack the courts - Imaging AOC as a Justice.
Damn this tinfoil hat is tight!

[PHILSTAR] More than P130,000 worth of methamphetamine hydrochloride or shabu have been confiscated from the Philippine Army’s headquarters in Taguig, according to a report released by the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) on Friday.
Arnold Penkian, a 45-year-old tailor living at the Army camp, was arrested in a sting at the Artillery Training Unit (ATU) office on Nov. 25, NCRPO spokesperson Lt. Col. Jenny Tecson said.
The sting was staged after an informant from the Army reported Penkian’s alleged drug deals.
A team of operatives from the city police, the Southern Police District’s drug enforcement and intelligence units and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency conducted surveillance to confirm the report.
Penkian’s house was allegedly used as a venue for drug sessions and for other pushers and users to conduct transactions, police said.
Operatives confiscated around 19.3 grams of shabu in 13 sachets with a street value of around P131,240, pieces of aluminum foil, an improvised tooter, an improvised water pipe, empty sachets and marked money were also seized from Penkian, who is facing charges of violating Sections 5, 11 and 12 — which deal with the sale and possession of dangerous drugs and drug paraphernalia — of Republic Act 9165, the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act.
Meanwhile, ...back at the pond, the enormous newt was trying to decide if Gloria was edible... the Marikina police arrested Gina Arellano, 31, and Jennelyn Hernandez, 32, in a sting in Barangay Geronimo in Montalban, Rizal on Friday.
Around 45 grams of shabu were confiscated from the two women, who face charges of drug trafficking.

Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems.... -linked forces of Evil killed four people in a remote Christian community on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, authorities said Saturday, with one victim beheaded and another burned to death.
The group of sword-and-gun wielding attackers ambushed Lembantongoa village in Central Sulawesi province Friday morning, killing several residents and torching half a dozen homes, including one used for regular prayers and services, police said.
No arrests had yet been made and the motive for the attack was not immediately clear.
But authorities pointed the finger at the Sulawesi-based East Indonesia Mujahideen (MIT), one of dozens of radical groups across the Southeast Asian archipelago that have pledged allegiance to IS.
Indonesia, the world's biggest Moslem majority nation, has long wrestled with Islamist militancy and terror attacks, while Central Sulawesi has seen intermittent violence between Christians and Moslems for decades.
The makeshift church was empty at the time of the early morning attack by around eight Death Eaters, he added.
"People were just in their homes when it happened," Priyahutama said.
Lembantongoa village head Rifai, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, said one victim was beheaded and another was nearly decapitated.
One of the other all-male victims was stabbed while a fourth was burned to death in his home, he added.
If confirmed to be the work of MIT, Friday's killings would be its first significant attack since the organization's leader was killed four years ago by Indonesia's elite anti-terror squad, according to Jakarta-based terrorism expert Sidney Jones.
In 2018, MIT was believed to have sent forces of Evil posing as humanitarian workers into Central Sulawesi's quake-tsunami hit Palu city in a bid to recruit new members, Jones said.

[NY Post] The assassination of Iranian nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh was carried out by a highly trained hit squad of 62 people — pouncing in six vehicles after the local power supply was cut, according to local reports.
The killers — who Iranian officials have insisted were sent by Israel — included a team of 50 giving "logistical support" to the dirty dozen who carried out the actual ambush Friday, sources told leading Iranian journalist Mohamad Ahwaze.
All involved had "entered special training courses, as well as security and intelligence services abroad," Ahwaze tweeted, as translated by ELINT News.
"The team knew exactly the date and course of the movement of the Fakhrizadeh protection convoy in the smallest details," Ahwaze’s sources told him, allowing them to cut the scientist off as he went to his private villa in Absard.
Shortly before Fakhrizadeh drove through their ambush site, the team "cut off the electricity completely from this area" to slow reports of their assassination and any calls for help, the reporter said.
Fakhrizadeh was traveling in the middle of three bulletproof cars, with the killers striking after the first car entered a roundabout, the report said.

A booby-trapped Nissan was then detonated to block the car behind Fakhrizadeh — as 12 gunmen pounced on him, arriving in a Hyundai Santa Fe and four motorbikes, Ahwaze tweeted.
"After the car bomb was detonated, 12 operatives opened fire towards Fakhrizadeh’s car and the first protection vehicle," his thread said.
"According to Iranian leaks, the leader of the assassination team took Fakhrizadeh out of his car and shot him and made sure he was killed."
None of the hit squad were wounded or arrested during the gunbattle with the Iranian’s bodyguards, Ahwaze said.
Friday’s hit has dramatically escalated tensions between Iran and Israel, which was quickly accused of ordering the hit.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed "definitive punishment of the perpetrators and those who ordered it."
He called Fakhrizadeh "the country’s prominent and distinguished nuclear and defensive scientist," and analysts have compared him to being on a par with Robert Oppenheimer, the scientist who led the U.S.′ Manhattan Project in World War II that created the atom bomb.

So the Iranians took him out -- they're the only people who could stage that large of an operation in Iran and escape notice of the Iranian security services.
So had they decided he was a turncoat? Maybe he was having second thoughts about the mullahs having nukes?
Or did they need a casus belli?
