[Pensions & Investments] Germany pledged to spend whatever necessary to protect its economy and the European Commission said it's ready to green-light widespread fiscal stimulus for euro nations as policy makers aimed to calm the markets with a decisive response to the coronavirus.
KfW, the German state bank, can lend as much as €550 billion ($610 billion) to companies to ensure they survive the pandemic and shield their workers from its impact, German Economy Minister Peter Altmaier said at a briefing in Berlin. Finance Minister Olaf Scholz, standing alongside him, said Germany is prepared to take on additional debt and will consider full-blown fiscal stimulus if the situation worsens. Switzerland pledged 10 billion Swiss francs ($10.5 billion) of aid for its companies. European stocks surged.
"This is the bazooka," Mr. Scholz said. "We're using it to do what is necessary. We'll check later to see if we need additional smaller weapons."
Chancellor Angela Merkel said later Friday that the measures show "that we're ready to do whatever is necessary, to do whatever Germany needs, so we can get through this crisis as best possible."
EU governments were at a crossroads by Friday after a chaotic week that saw European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde warn of a Lehman-style meltdown and markets tumble as the epidemic seemed to be spiraling out of control. The commission forecast the EU economy will shrink by 1% this year with Italy, the hardest hit country, already on lockdown and the rest of the continent set to follow.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez declared a state of emergency Friday after the number of confirmed cases jumped by 40% in 24 hours to 4,209. A week ago there were 261. "The Spanish government will do whatever it takes" to slow contagion, Mr. Sanchez said.
[AP] WASHINGTON ‐ The U.S. Secret Service says an employee has tested positive for the coronavirus.
The agency said in a statement early Monday that it will continue to monitor the employee’s condition. The employee is in quarantine.
The agency says it determined after an assessment that the employee has had no contact with other employees or anyone the agency is responsible for protecting for nearly three weeks.

[Breitbart] Five college students from the University of Tampa tested positive for the coronavirus after coming back from a spring break trip, the school announced.
WFLA reported that the students were traveling together with other University of Tampa students before testing positive. The school did not state where the students went during their break or whether they lived in the dorms or off-campus.
The students are currently recovering from the disease and are in self-isolation, WFTS reported.
The university sent its well-wishes to those students recovering from the coronavirus in a Saturday tweet.

If you deliberately wanted to spreed the virus around USA, how would you do things differently than gathering a lot of young people (young can carry the infection furthest) from all parts of the country in close proximity to each other?

"Why do U of Tampa college students even need a spring break???" is what came to my mind first.

[KhaamaPress] Jack Ma, Asia’s richest man, pledged 1.8 million face masks, 210,000 test kits and 36,000 protective suits plus ventilators and thermometers to combat the outspread of coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague) ...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men... in Afghanistan and 9 other Asian countries.
"Go Asia! We will donate emergency supplies (1.8M masks, 210K test kits, 36K protective suits, plus ventilators & thermometers) to Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Laos, Maldives, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistain & Sri Lanka. Delivering fast is not easy, but we’ll get it done!," the Chinese billionaire and founder of Alibaba Group and Jack Foundation said in a Twitter post.
The Ministry of Public Health of Afghanistan has so far recorded 22 positive cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) across the country.
However, it's easy to be generous with someone else's money... the virus is rapdily spreading in some of the developing countries including Pakistain where the authorities have recorded 510 confirmed cases.
The latest announcement by Jack Ma is being made at a time when there are growing concerns that the massive return of Afghan refugees from Iran ...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Führer or maybe both. They hate JewsZionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol... could result into further outspread of the disease in Afghanistan.
Citing the International Organization for Migration (IOM), The Middle East Eye reported that more than 19,000 Afghans left Iran and entered the Western Afghan provinces of Herat ...a venerable old Persian-speaking city in western Afghanistan, populated mostly by Tadjiks, which is why it's not as blood-soaked as areas controlled by Pashtuns... and Nimroz during the first week of March.
The Afghan refugees reportedly left Iran after facing discrimination and prejudice when seeking health services.
[AlAhram] Egypt has sent 1.5 million medical masks to Italia to help it deal with its growing coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague) ...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men... crisis, Italia's foreign ministry said, as the world's worst-hit country is grappling with a shortage of medical protective gear.
"The first million and a half masks...[from] Egypt landed in Italia," Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio said on his official Facebook page Saturday.
Local media said the EgypAir plane carrying the shipment landed in Malpensa Airport in the northern city of Milan.
The delivery from Egypt was followed by another shipment of 40,000 masks from India, he added.
An EgyptAir spokesperson contacted by Ahram Online provided no further details.
Italia is the world's hardest-hit country by the coronavirus pandemic. To date, the European country has registered more than 53,500 cases and over 4,800 deaths, overtaking China--the epicenter of the outbreak--as the country worst hit by the highly contagious virus.
"Doctors, nurses and social health workers are currently suffering from the lack of protective devices, especially masks." Di Maio said, adding that law enforcement and rescue workers, military personnel and factory workers are also affected by the shortage.
Another four million face masks and 100 lung fans were due to be sent from China aboard two Italian military aircrafts on Sunday and Monday, Di Maio said.
Other countries like Russia, Brazil, Ukraine and The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...Qatar's satrapy in Asia Minor... have also assisted Italia with masks and other medical supplies.
In Egypt, the prices of medical masks have soared, with some types no longer found in the market amid a rise in coronavirus cases -- now at 294.
Earlier this month, the Egyptian trade ministry banned the export of surgical masks and disinfectants as well as medical alcohol for three months in a bid to avert a potential shortage in local market.
Merkel Quarantined After Contact with Doctor Infected by Coronavirus
[BREITBART] Germany’s Angela Merkel ...chancellor of Germany and the impetus behind Germany's remarkably ill-starred immigration program. Merkel used to be referred to by Germans as Mom. Now they make faces at her for inundating the country with Moslem colonists... has gone self-quarantined in her home after contact with a doctor infected by the Wuhan coronavirus. ...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men... Steffen Seibert, a front man for Merkel’s government ‐ at present a so-called "grand coalition" between her notionally centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the left-wing Social Democrats; roughly equivalent to a Tory-Labour or Republican-Democrat joint administration ‐ told news hounds that a doctor who administered a pneumococcal vaccine to the Chancellor on Friday had subsequently tested positive for the Chinese virus.
Consequently, the 65-year-old politician has been quarantined, apparently voluntarily, where she will continue to work while receiving regular tests, according to CNBC.

S.Korea reports 98 more COVID-19 cases, 8,897 in total [XINHUANET] South Korea reported 98 more cases of the COVID-19 compared to 24 hours ago as of midnight Sunday local time, raising the total number of infections to 8,897.
The newly confirmed cases fell below 100 again, after recording 147 on Saturday. The figure moved above or below 100 for the past week.
Two more deaths were confirmed, lifting the corpse count to 104. The total fatality rate came in at 1.17 percent.
A total of 297 more patients were discharged from quarantine after making full recovery, pulling up the combined number to 2,909. The number of recoveries kept surpassing new infections.
Number of coronavirus cases in Spain rises to 28,572 [XinHoa] Close to 400 new deaths were registered on Sunday, bringing the total death toll to 1,720. Meanwhile, 2,575 people have recovered from the disease. The health ministry also confirmed that 3,475 health workers have been infected by the coronavirus.
It’s Barack Obama's Fault There’s a Shortage of N95 Respirator Masks
[PJMedia] Back in 2005, the Bush administration published the “National Strategy for Pandemic Influenza.” The strategy called for plans to distribute medical supplies from the national stockpile and to assist state and local efforts to handle an outbreak, but last month, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar told Congress that the national stockpile of N95 respirator masks was 12 million—a mere fraction of the 1.7 billion masks government scientists estimated back in 2015 would be needed in the event of a severe flu outbreak.
Buried several paragraphs deep in the aforementioned Bloomberg story we find out that “after the H1N1 influenza outbreak in 2009, which triggered a nationwide shortage of masks and caused a 2- to 3-year backlog orders for the N95 variety, the stockpile distributed about three-quarters of its inventory and didn’t build back the supply.”
Change in U.S. law will make millions more masks available to doctors and nurses, White House says
[JewishWorldReview] New legislation signed Wednesday provides manufacturers of N95 face masks protection against lawsuits when selling certain masks to healthcare workers, Pence said. That will free producers including 3M and Honeywell to sell tens of millions more masks per month to hospitals, Pence said, helping alleviate alarming shortages that have surfaced in recent weeks amid the coronavirus crisis.
"They are available now," Pence said when asked when the extra masks would hit the market.
The change means Minnesota-based 3M will now be free to sell 420 million masks a year to the U.S. healthcare sector, Pence said. And Honeywell of Charlotte, North Carolina, will soon boost N95 mask output in the U.S. by an additional 120 million masks per year, Pence said.
Coronavirus: Emirates to cut wages
[MIDDLEEASTMONITOR] Emirates, one of the world’s biggest international airlines, will ground its entire passenger fleet this week and cut staff wages by as much as half because of the coronavirus ...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men... and its impact on travel demand, Rooters report.
The state-owned Dubai carrier had already announced the suspension of nearly 70% of its network, asked staff to go on unpaid leave and frozen recruitment as the industry faces one of its biggest ever challenges.
"As a global network airline, we find ourselves in a situation where we cannot viably operate passenger services until countries reopen their borders and travel confidence returns," Emirates Chairman Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed al-Maktoum said in a statement.

I have finally realized that the USA report on a day's Wu situation really isn't complete until about 9am the next morning.
Assuming it is now a complete report, the USA situation is a bit different that what I had expected.
As expected, the number of cases went way up, by about 12k to 33.5k. This was expected because of the increased testing (probably more than 50k people were tested).
What I hadn't expected was the big increase in deaths which went up by 117 to 419. The percentage increase in deaths was thus slightly greater than the increase in cases. This reversed the trend of the previous two weeks. I think this is due to a number of deaths in NY from an infection incident about a week ago.

[Press Republican] ALBANY ‐ Oscar-winning movie producer Harvey Weinstein, now one of New York's most notorious prison inmates after being sentenced for sexual assault, has tested positive for the COVID-19 virus, according to officials connected to the state prison system.
Weinstein, who turned 68 last Thursday is being isolated at Wende Correctional Facility in western New York, officials told CNHI Sunday.
He is one of two Wende inmates who have tested positive, the officials said.
Weinstein is serving a 23-year sentence for rape and sexual assault in a prosecution that attracted world-wide attention amid the #MeToo movement.
Officials familiar with his situation said it is believed Weinstein was positive for the virus when he entered the state prison system last Wednesday from Rikers Island, a New York City jail.
Weinstein was sent to Wende, where the prison system operates an intake center for new state inmates. Inmates are typically sent to other facilities from there after medical and security concerns are assessed.
As we’ve been following the news over the last few days, we’ve heard about the severe shortage of protective gear for hospitals, healthcare workers and first responders as the impact of COVID-19 is being felt across the country. America depends on these heroes every day and in the days ahead we will depend on them even more. At Harbor Freight, we want them to know that they can depend on us too.
So we’ve decided to donate our entire supply of the personal protective equipment items listed below to front line hospitals with 24 hour emergency rooms in the communities served by our stores.
• N95 Masks
• Face Shields
• 5 and 7 mil Nitrile Gloves
If you work at a hospital with a 24 hour emergency room in need of these items, please ask the office in charge of procurement at your hospital to click here so they can provide us with the information we’ll need to determine if we can make a donation. If you’re not with a hospital, but would like to give us the name of a hospital with a 24 hour emergency room in your community that might need our help, please email us at hospitalhelp@harborfreight.com, identify the hospital’s city and state in the subject line, and our team will follow-up.
PLEASE DO NOT MAKE REQUESTS AT YOUR LOCAL STORE OR OUR CALL CENTER AND PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT HOSPITALS—THEY’RE BUSY HELPING THEIR PATIENTS.
For hospitals we’re able to help, we’ll email them a voucher when the supplies are available for pick up at their local Harbor Freight Tools store.
Although we certainly won’t have enough of these supplies to fill everyone’s needs, we’re going to donate everything we’ve got. We also recognize that there are so many other critically important people responding to this crisis and that there is need everywhere. We’ve chosen to focus our efforts on hospitals with a 24 hour emergency room with the hope that we can help as many people as possible right now.

YGBFKM [XINHUANET]Chinese President Xi Jinping said China stands ready to work with France to boost international cooperation in epidemic prevention and control and build a community of common health for mankind.
Xi made the remarks in a recent message to French President Emmanuel Macron, in which he extended sincere sympathies on behalf of the Chinese government and people to their French counterparts over the COVID-19 outbreak in the European country.
China and France have a fine tradition of helping each other and sharing weal and woe in bilateral relations, said Xi, who thanked the French government and society for their support of and sympathies with China's all-out battle against the novel coronavirus disease.
Pointing out that public health security is a common challenge faced by humanity, he said the Chinese government and people firmly support France's efforts against the COVID-19 epidemic, and stand ready to boost cooperation with France and jointly win the battle through mutual support and help.
Both as permenant members of the UN Security Council, China and France share the important responsibility of safeguarding the lives and health of the entire human race, Xi stressed.

How about instead of building a community of common health you try cooperating with the existing one? Stop trying to pretend it doesn't already exist.

[THEHILL] Pope Francis ...Argentine liberation theologist, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio. He was elected pope in 2013. Rather than setting up shop in Avignon, where he belongs, the first Jesuit Pope chose to reside in the Domus Sanctae Marthae guesthouse instead of the papal apartments. He is big on climate change, against consumerism, and in favor of throwing a blanket over homosexual activity within the clergy. He's not real sure about the Resurrection, about Christ's divinity, and a few other things that would have gotten him burned at the stake a few hundred years ago, but he's hot for a certain South American Earth Mother Goddess... announced Sunday that he will offer his "Urbi et Orbi" special blessing Friday as the coronavirus ...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men... pandemic continues worldwide.
The pope said he plans to offer the blessing traditionally only given at Christmas and Easter this Friday as the COVID-19 outbreak has infected hundreds of thousands and disrupted societies around the globe, Rooters reported.
He made his announcement in his weekly Angelus message, which is typically given in St. Peter’s Square, which has been closed off to the public. The pope instead delivered his message from inside the Vatican and online.
Friday’s blessing will be delivered in an empty St. Peter’s Square. Catholics can receive a special indulgence in person or online, which is a remission of punishment for sins.
The pope also requested Christians around the world say the "Our Father" prayer at noon Italian time.
"We want to respond to the pandemic of the virus with the universality of prayer, of compassion, of tenderness," he said, according to Rooters. "Let’s remain united".
The change in tradition reflects the significance of the pandemic, Rooters noted. Italia, which encompasseds Vatican City, has the most recorded deaths of any country, including China where the virus is believed to have originated. Italia has counted more than 59,000 cases and 5,476 deaths.

[American Thinker] In Iran, the number of prisoners infected with coronavirus is increasing. Given that prison is a closed space, lacking proper nutrition, lacking adequate health and medical facilities and with high population density, Coronavirus infection threatens the lives of many prisoners. Despite the issuance of 2 directives by the head of the judiciary granting leave to prisoners, political prisoners are denied these directives. According to the judiciary, the legal status of these detainees is defined as "detained," including those arrested during the November protests.
While the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights also calls for the release of all prisoners, the release of political prisoners is blocked by the security and judicial systems. On Sunday, March 15, 2020, a prisoner was transferred from ward 14 of Urmia Prison to a hospital outside of prison after testing positive with Coronavirus. Also, according to the Human Rights Organization in Defense of Political Prisoners, two women wardens in Evin Prison have been barred from coming to work for the past seven days for suspected exposure to the Coronavirus. In recent days, the test results of one of them were confirmed positive.
On March 16, 2020, 128 prisoners in wards No 1, 2, 2, and 4 of Evin Prison Quarantine went on a hunger strike in protest of their exposure to dangerous Coronavirus disease and the deplorable state of health and food.
However, when the prisoners realized that after 2 months of the Coronavirus outbreak, they had no alternative, and as their deaths were inevitable, they decided to revolt and escape from prison. According to Khorramabad local Citizens on March 18, 2020, prisoners in Ward 3 of Parsylon Khorramabad Prison Mass rioted and escaped from prison. 250 prisoners rioted and tried to escape.
Some of them were brutally attacked by prison guards and killed by gunfire, but 130 of them managed to escape. During the riot at Parsylon, prisoners broke the prison's door. They confiscated the weapons of the guards, wounded two of them and then fled. The rebellion took place in a coordinated plan from outside and inside the prison. Some of the prisoners' friends from Koohdasht attacked the prison from outside in 2 cars, while simultaneously in a coordinated effort, prisoners from inside the prison rioted. The guards in this situation were very frightened and lost control.
Witnesses at the scene said they heard continuous gunshots from near the prison. Following the uprising of Khorramabad prisoners and their successful escape, the security authorities and the Revolutionary Guards began to establish martial law in the city of Khorramabad and arrested people. The IRGC also raided nearby villages to arrest fugitive prisoners. The people of Khorramabad opened their homes to runaway prisoners, and many people drove them out of the city in their cars so that the IRGC could not catch them.
One citizen who himself was imprisoned in this same prison said, "The prisoners escaped because they treat the prisoners here like animals. You need tens of bail and tens of documents to go on leave, and on top of that a few prison guards must guarantee your bail." Last year Ramin Biranvand, a 20-year-old prisoner in ward 2 of this same prison, committed suicide because they demanded a huge bail bonds, plus the guarantee of 6 prison guards. Finally, lack of 1 last guarantor prevented him from taking leave, and he committed suicide out of anger. There was a countless number of hunger strikes. The prison social workers instead of tending to strikers' demands, put them in a cage and left them in the cold.

[Washington Examiner] Despite a state-ordered closure of abortion clinics in Ohio, providers remained open for most of the past week until anti-abortion activists pointed out that the clinics had refused to close.
On Saturday, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost demanded the clinics be closed after being categorized as "nonessential procedures."
"You and your facility are ordered to immediately stop performing nonessential and elective surgical abortions. Nonessential surgical abortions are those that can be delayed without undue risk to the current or future health of a patient," Yost said. "If you or your facility do not immediately stop performing nonessential or elective surgical abortions in compliance with the (health director’s) order, the Department of Health will take all appropriate measures."
The statement came after activists recorded people entering and leaving abortion clinics in the state this week. A spokeswoman for one Ohio-area abortion clinic claimed the procedure is "an essential component of comprehensive healthcare."
In a letter sent to Ohio Planned Parenthood President Iris Harvey, a top state anti-abortion activist accused clinics of contributing to the spread of COVID-19.
"By performing surgical abortions, your company is putting the health and safety of all Ohioans in danger," wrote Ohio for Life President Michael Gonidakis. "Your current noncompliance will undoubtedly contribute to the spread of COVID-19 and put the lives of first responders, nurses, and doctors in danger."
Abortion has been a heavily debated topic in Ohio after Republican Gov. Mike DeWine signed a controversial "heartbeat" bill into law in April 2019. The legislation outlaws abortion after the detection of a fetal heartbeat, usually about five to six weeks into a pregnancy.
[ZeroHedge] As of Friday, Louisiana was reporting 479 confirmed cases of COVID-19, one of the highest numbers in the country. Ten people had died. The majority of cases are in New Orleans, which now has one confirmed case for every 1,000 residents. New Orleans had held Mardi Gras celebrations just two weeks before its first patient, with more than a million revelers on its streets.
I spoke to a respiratory therapist there, whose job is to ensure that patients are breathing well. He works in a medium-sized city hospital's intensive care unit. (We are withholding his name and employer, as he fears retaliation.) Before the virus came to New Orleans, his days were pretty relaxed, nebulizing patients with asthma, adjusting oxygen tubes that run through the nose or, in the most severe cases, setting up and managing ventilators. His patients were usually older, with chronic health conditions and bad lungs.
Since last week, he's been running ventilators for the sickest COVID-19 patients. Many are relatively young, in their 40s and 50s, and have minimal, if any, preexisting conditions in their charts. He is overwhelmed, stunned by the manifestation of the infection, both its speed and intensity. The ICU where he works has essentially become a coronavirus unit. He estimates that his hospital has admitted dozens of confirmed or presumptive coronavirus patients. About a third have ended up on ventilators.
His hospital had not prepared for this volume before the virus first appeared. One physician had tried to raise alarms, asking about negative pressure rooms and ventilators. Most staff concluded that he was overreacting. "They thought the media was overhyping it," the respiratory therapist told me. "In retrospect, he was right to be concerned."
"Reading about it in the news, I knew it was going to be bad, but we deal with the flu every year so I was thinking: Well, it's probably not that much worse than the flu. But seeing patients with COVID-19 completely changed my perspective, and it's a lot more frightening."

Oh, how weird. When I read that aloud a moment ago, the "understand" automagically filled itself in without me noticing.
Been thinking for days that the famous curve graph should've been captioned a bit more intensely, as in, "Above this line, between this point and that, the folks you infect, and quite possibly you, and maybe -- way to go, genius! -- the nurses and docs your pleading eyes will have been begging to save you from suffocating... are... SCREWED.
Guys, for whatever reason, Rantburg will delete all text after a double quote in the headline, so please — in headlines only — replace double quotes with single quotes, aka apostophes.

Many are relatively young, in their 40s and 50s, and have minimal, if any, preexisting conditions in their charts.
Probably in a year or so they will establish some genetic characteristic for the susceptible ones that they all share. Another example of the fact that no Individual Person necessarily responds well to Average Patient Treatment™...
So all Rantburgers need to understand their own needs first.

"Many are relatively young, in their 40s and 50s, and have minimal, if any, preexisting conditions in their charts." Eventually we will find they are all habitual vapors but didn't count that when asked if they smoked.
The idea that this only affects the old and infirm is based on the China numbers. IIRC, China did not report any deaths for individuals under 50 years of age. In the US and Europe about half the deaths are under 50. Make of that what you like, but my gut is that the Chinese numbers are pure fiction.

Not good. From harvardtothebighouse.com. "COVID-19 seems to use antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE) to much more efficiently enter into cells, and then become much more virulent since this enhancement hijacks the body’s preexisting immune response to coronavirus infections and allows easier entry. However whether or not people have been exposed to a coronavirus infection before, once it’s been circulating in a population for long enough the Wuhan Strain may be able to reinfect its own past hosts and use this molecular hijacking on antibodies left from its own previous infection to become far more virulent, regardless of whether or not someone has been exposed to other coronaviruses before COVID-19. And early reporting from Chinese doctors indicates that re-infections of the Wuhan Strain are far more lethal than the first."

^^^ Why yes, this topic was discussed very early in the outbreak. This virus has been enhanced, and its lethality upgraded. It’s one of the things they are not telling us, officially.
