husband and wife killed in officer-involved shooting in SE Houston
More on this story from yesterday.
[ABC7] A group of narcotics officers came under fire while trying to serve a search warrant in southeast Houston late Monday afternoon.

Rhogena Nicholas, 58, and her husband Dennis Tuttle, 59, have been identified as the two suspects who were killed at the house in the 7800 block of Harding.

Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo said the drug raid on the home stemmed from numerous complaints from neighbors. He said undercover officers had previously made two purchases of black tar heroin from drug pushers at the house.

Armed with a search warrant, nine narcotics detectives backed up by at least six patrol officers surrounded the home just before 5 p.m. on Monday.

After a 54-year-old officer, the lead investigator on the case, broke open the front door, a 33-year-old officer armed with a shotgun entered the residence and was immediately attacked by a pit bull, Acevedo said.

He said that the officer being attacked shot and killed the dog.

One of the suspects, Tuttle, charged from the back of the house firing a revolver at the officer, hitting him in the shoulder.

"He went down and fell on the sofa in the living room," Acevedo said of the maimed officer. "A female suspect went towards that officer, reached over the officer and started making a move for his shotgun."

Another officer who entered the house was allegedly shot by Tuttle.

Acevedo said officers opened fire, killing Nicholas and engaged in a shootout with Tuttle.

He said the lead investigator who breached the door entered the house and was also shot.

"After we had two officers down and another shot, the remaining officers ... started laying down cover fire, left positions of cover themselves and, I believe, they heroically pulled their fellow officers out of harm's way," Acevedo said.

He said Tuttle followed the retreating officers to the front door and continued to fire at them before he was shot and killed.

Police recovered two shotguns and three rifles from the residence and seized marijuana and a white powder they believe to be either cocaine or the powerful synthetic opioid fentanyl, Acevedo said.

12 terror suspects arrested in Dadaab
[CAPITALFM.CO.KE] Twelve terror suspects have been tossed in the clink
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
at the Dadaab Refugee Camp during a major security swoop conducted two weeks after a terror attack in the Kenyan capital, in which 21 people were killed.

"Twelve terror suspects have been arrested in Dadaab refugee camp," Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet told Capital FM News on phone and explained that one has two foreign passports.

"One of them has two New Zealand passports in different names," the police chief said, but did not give details of the rest of the suspects.

He confirmed that they were all being investigated for terrorism, but declining to specify if they were in any way linked to the most recent attack in the capital’s 14 Riverside Complex.

The terror suspects were arrested during a security operation conducted at the refugee camp in Garissa County ‐ the third largest in the world ‐ mainly hosting asylum seekers from neighbouring Somalia.

Dadaab camp which is a UNHCR base, hosts more than 250,000 registered refugees and asylum seekers in four camps.

So far, 17 suspects have been arraigned in court over the January 15 terror attack, staged by five attackers who blasted their way into the complex with grenades and AK-47 rifles.

One went kaboom! at the start of the siege, while four were killed by security forces in a night-long siege that ended with the rescue of more than 700 people ‐ mainly workers in different offices, banks and hotel.

Police have been given until the end of February to complete investigations against the suspects arraigned in court so far, even as they hunt for more.

4 Garissa University terror attack suspects have a case to answer
[CAPITALFM.CO.KE] Four terror suspects facing 156 counts stemming from the August 5, 2015, terrorist attack on Garissa University have been put on their defence after a trial court established, they have a case to answer.

A status conference is scheduled to take place on February 13, ahead of the defence hearing.

Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi approved charges against Mohammed Ali Abdikar, Sahal Diriye, Hassan Aden Hassan, and Rashid Charles Mbereso all charged with murder in August last year after the prosecution persuaded his court it had evidence linking them to the attack.

Andayi however acquitted Osman Abdi Dagane, who worked as a guard at Garissa University when five gunnies stormed the institution killing 146 people leaving over sixty with injuries.

Mbereso, a Tanzanian national, was acquitted of an additional charge of being in the country illegally, the magistrate upholding murder counts he is facing.

Egypt police arrest 54 Muslim Brotherhood members, foil terrorist plot: Ministry
[AlAhram] The Egyptian Ministry of Interior says that police forces have incarcerated
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
54 members of the Moslem Brüderbund group for plotting attacks in Egypt in coordination with the Brotherhood’s leadership abroad.
The ministry said that intelligence revealed that the leaders of the outlawed group abroad were plotting to sow chaos in the country in January and February to coincide with the anniversary of the 25 January revolution.

The suspects plotted to sabotage public roads and terrorise citizens with the aim of disrupting public peace and harming the country's national interests, according to the ministry.

The MB leadership abroad formed a group on the internet which included members of the Muslin Brotherhood and anti-state elements inside the country under the name "O Allah, Revolution," holding a number of meetings abroad to plan the execution of their terrorist plot, the statement added.

The ministry said that the suspects were found in possession of cash and materials used in riots to block roads and set fires.

The ministry said that it is working to identify and arrest the remaining members of the group, which is led by Yasser El-Omda, a runaway Brotherhood leader currently residing in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

NAF Alpha jets destroy terrorists’ hideout in Limberi, Borno
[PULSE.NG] The Nigerian Air Force says its Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation LAFIYA DOLE , has destroyed another murderous Moslems hideout in Limberi, in Northern Borno.

The NAF said the ATF also neutralised activities of some murderous Moslems at Limberi, a cluster of small, co-located settlements made up of mud and thatched roof structures located about 92Km North West of Monguno in Northern Borno.
Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, who disclosed this in a statement on Monday in Abuja said the operation was conducted on Saturday.

The air strike was conducted on Jan.26, following credible Human Intelligence (HUMINT) reports indicating that the location was being used by the murderous Moslems as a staging area.

This was later confirmed by Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions which tracked a group of murderous Moslems heading to a location about 3km North of the settlements, where they had converged.

The ATF therefore dispatched two Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Alpha Jet aircraft to attack the location as the fighters were emerging from their meeting venue; hitting them in successive passes and recording successful strikes resulting in the destruction of several structures, which were seen engulfed in flames.

Each pass was targeted at the various compounds where the murderous Moslems had dispersed resulting in the neutralisation of several activities of terrorists, Daramola said.

3 Ugandans held over attacks in Mozambique's gas-rich north
[PULSE.NG] Mozambican police said Tuesday they had incarcerated
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
three Ugandans on suspicion of leading attacks in the country's gas-rich Cabo Delgado province which has been rocked by an Islamist insurgency.

The suspects, two men and a woman, were picked up in a forested area on Friday, with police saying their arrest had enabled them to shut down several "training camps".

"These are the leaders of the group of criminals who have carried out attacks in Cabo Delgado," said Zacarias Nacute, police front man for neighbouring Nampula province.

The arrests come as Mozambique struggles to cope with a wave of jihadist attacks that erupted in the north in late 2017, killing more than 100 civilians and scores of police, and threatening government plans to exploit newly-discovered oil and gas reserves.

The violence has also forced thousands out of their homes.

Police said the three suspects confessed to belonging an al-Shabaab
... the Islamic version of the old Somali warlord...
cell in Uganda but had insisted they were only in Mozambique to find their leader, who had been arrested there at an earlier date.

Speaking to news hounds while under police guard, one of the suspects called Abdulrahim Faiza said he was involved with al-Shabaab in Uganda but had not been involved in any attacks in Mozambique.

"I am not part of the groups that have carried out attacks in Cabo Delgado. We are in Mozambique to rescue our captured leader," he said, referring to the leader in question as Abdul Aziz.

Last month, prosecutors in Maputo unveiled a raft of charges against a group of five people whom they accused of leading a string of deadly jihadist attacks in the Cabo Delgado area.

The group included two Ugandans, two Tanzanians and a South African who died in jug last week under mysterious circumstances.

The violence in Cabo Delgado has been attributed to a group known in Arabic as Ahlu Sunnah Wa-Jama -- although it is usually referred to as "Al-Shabaab" despite having no known link to the Somali jihadist group of the same name.

Its gunnies are reportedly seeking to impose Sharia law in the Moslem-majority province.

Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi has vowed to "neutralise" the threat, sending heavy reinforcements to the region to eradicate the jihadists.

Border agents seize bags of guns, ammo left on Texas ranch
[WASHINGTONEXAMINER] Two duffel bags filled with 17 rifles, shotguns, handguns, and ammunition were found on a private Texas ranch and confiscated by border officials.

The weapons were taken from a ranch near the Border Patrol's Carrizo Springs Station in Del Rio, Texas. An unnamed citizen called the agency after seeing a group of suspected illegal immigrants colonists carrying large bags on nearby land Friday. The area is about 25 miles east of the international border.

The agents who responded to the ranch found four handguns and 13 various types of rifles and shotguns wrapped in blankets inside. An unspecified amount of money was also found with the guns and bullets.

It's not clear if the suspected illegal immigrants colonists were moving north or south, though it is standard for narcotics to flow north, while money and guns more often are moved south in return for drugs.

"This seizure is a testament to the vital role that the men and women of the U.S. Border Patrol have in safeguarding our borders and protecting our communities," Del Rio Sector acting Chief Patrol Agent Matthew J. Hudak said in a statement.

The guns were turned over to the Dimmit County Sheriff's Department.

Palestinian said critically wounded amid clashes on Gaza border
[IsraelTimes] Army says 1,000 Gazooks riot along security fence in northern Strip, but Hamas, a regional Iranian catspaw, health ministry says injured man was not taking part.

A Gazook man was critically maimed from Israeli fire during a violent protest on the border in the north of the coastal enclave, Paleostinians said Tuesday.

Approximately 1,000 Paleostinians rioted along the northern Gazoo border, across from the Israeli community of Zikim, the Israeli army said.

The demonstrators threw stones at Israeli troops on the other side of the security fence. The soldiers responded with tear gas and, in some cases, live fire, according to the Israel Defense Forces.

According to the Hamas-run Gazoo health ministry, 14 people were maimed by the IDF to varying degrees during the riots.

At sea, approximately 20 boats made their way toward the limits of the permitted fishing zone in a weekly naval protest. They were turned back by Israeli naval vessels, the army said.

The Hamas-run health ministry said a Paleostinian man, 45, was maimed after he was shot in the knee by Israeli security forces.

The ministry said he was working land in the northern Gazoo Strip and not taking part in the protests.

Separately, the ministry in Gazoo said Samir al-Nabaheen, 47, died Tuesday from wounds he sustained during festivities Friday with Israeli forces. He was the second fatality reported by the ministry during Friday’s riots.

Since last March, the Gazoo border has seen large-scale weekly festivities on Fridays, and smaller protests along the northern Gazoo border on Tuesdays as well as periodic flareups between the Israeli military and Paleostinian terror organizations.

Duterte blames suicide bomber, wife for cathedral bombing
[Yahoo] A suicide bomber and his wife carried out an attack on a Catholic cathedral that killed 21 people, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said Tuesday. He told reporters that a woman who remains at large left a device that exploded during mass at the cathedral in the remote Muslim-majority island of Jolo on Sunday, and that her husband later blew himself up outside. The president's account differed from earlier statements by security officials.

Duterte said military intelligence told him Tuesday the second bomb was strapped on to the body of the male suspect who detonated it as survivors of the first blast fled. He said, "They (investigators) could not find any part of the body because it exploded, because that was terrorism and that was a suicide."

If Duterte's account is confirmed it would be among the few suicide bombings in the Philippines.

Duterte said the Jolo attack was carried out by the Abu Sayyaf. He said, "We are sure of that."

Duterte said the woman wore a necklace "with a large cross" pendant, which he suggested was the likely reason she was not intercepted.

"It's not the norm in this country to frisk a woman inside the church," the president said, adding he has ordered the military to "go into a punitive action" against the Abu Sayyaf.

Security officials said earlier Tuesday that a group affiliated with the Abu Sayyaf carried out the attack with two explosive devices, one left behind by a woman inside the church and the other hidden on a motorcycle outside.

Idlib: gov’t kills 11 Al Nusra, boomerette gets 2 more, fragile truce threatened

Regime Bombardment Kills 11 in Syria's Idlib

[AnNahar] Syrian regime bombardment killed at least 11 people including nine civilians Tuesday in the northwestern region of Idlib where government and rebel backers agreed a "demilitarized zone," a monitor said.

Idlib, the last major part of Syria still outside the control of the regime of President Bashar al-Assad, has been hit by sporadic government shelling for weeks despite the deal between pro-Assad Russia and rebel backer Turkey.

Tuesday's bombing of Maaret al-Numan came as Hayat Tahrir al-Sham
, an alliance led by Syria's former al-Qaida affiliate, gained full control of the town, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor.

"Eleven people -- including nine civilians, two of them children -- were killed by artillery and missile fire" from government forces, said Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman.

"This was the first government bombing of Maaret al-Numan... since the Russia-Turkey accord" was signed on September 17, he added.

The deal was intended to spare Idlib and its three million inhabitants from a potentially devastating government offensive near the Turkish border.

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham sealed its grip on Idlib on January 10, when it reached a ceasefire deal with the remnants of a rival alliance following days of deadly fighting.

The deal allowed an administrative body created by the jihadists, the "Salvation Government", to extend its grip over most of Idlib province and parts of neighboring provinces of Aleppo and Hama.

Monday's implementation of that plan raised tensions between HTS and rebel groups, which left the town as a result, said the Observatory.

Syria's complex war has killed at least 360,000 people and displaced millions since it started in 2011 with the brutal repression of anti-government protests.

Activists: Suicide blast targets al-Qaeda-linked group in Syria

[IsraelTimes] Syrian opposition activists say a woman has blown herself up, killing two people, outside an administration office for an al-Qaeda-linked group in the northern city of Idlib.

The Local Coordination Committees say today’s blast outside the offices linked to Hayat Tahrir al-Sham also wounded others. The attack comes weeks after the al-Qaeda-linked group captured wide parts of northern Syria in battles with The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
-backed opposition fighters.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, another group monitoring the civil war, says the bomber exchanged fire with guards before blowing herself up.

Idlib, in northwestern Syria, is the last stronghold of opposition groups fighting President Bashar Assad’s government. The al-Qaeda-linked HTS is a dominant force in the area.

Al-Qaida's advance in northern Syria threatens fragile truce

BEIRUT (AP) ‐ It only took a few days for al-Qaida-linked militants to seize more than two dozen towns and villages in northern Syria from rival insurgents earlier this month, expanding and cementing their control over an area the size of neighboring Lebanon.

The advance by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, or the Levant Liberation Committee, was the most serious blow yet to a September cease-fire brokered by Russia and Turkey that averted a major government offensive in Idlib province, the last main stronghold of the Syrian opposition.

It highlighted the growing threat posed by al-Qaida at a time when its rival, the Islamic State group, is on the verge of defeat and the U.S. is preparing to withdraw its 2,000 troops from Syria. Although HTS has formally severed ties with al-Qaida, experts say it is still closely linked to the global network founded by Osama bin Laden and could use its base in Syria to launch attacks in the West.

Fawaz Gerges, professor of Middle Eastern politics at the London School of Economics, says there is a "real danger" that the group’s advance "will not only worsen the humanitarian crisis for the 3 million inhabitants there, but also give (President Bashar) Assad and his allies the justification to assault the province."

Two blasts heard near police station in southeast Iran: Mehr
[AlAhram] Two kabooms were heard in the city of Zahedan, in southeastern Iran, state media said on Tuesday, but there were contradictory reports about the source of the blasts.

The Young Journalist Club, a news website linked to state broadcaster IRIB, said two jacket wallahs had blown themselves up in front of a cop shoppe. But Mehr news agency quoted an "informed source" as saying that one of the kabooms was caused by a percussion grenade.

Four people were maimed, according to Mehr and the Young Journalist Club.

Zahedan is the capital of Sistan-Baluchestan province, where Iranian security forces often clash with armed drugs smugglers and Sunni hard boys. The province is home to mostly Sunni ethnic Baluchis, a minority in predominantly Shi’ite Iran.

A video of the aftermath of the attack was soon removed from the Young Journalist Club’s website. The video, shared on other social media, showed a car with a broken windshield and people around it.

SDF troops completely overwhelm ISIS to capture key town in eastern Euphrates region
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) completely overwhelmed the so-called Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS/ISIS/IS/ISIS) this evening to take hold of a key town east of the Euphrates River.

Backed by heavy artillery and air strikes from the U.S. Coalition, the Syrian Democratic Forces were able to retake several points they lost during the Islamic State’s offensive last week.

According to reports from this front, the Syrian Democratic Forces have taken full control over the key town of Baghouz Fouqani after the Islamic State’s failed to hold their points near the Murashida axis.

The Syrian Democratic Forces are now working to capture the last Islamic State points inside this small pocket east of the Euphrates River.
