Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers in Kulbiyow camp, Somalia, successfully repulsed Al Shabaab operatives supported by two Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Devices (VBIED) Friday.
According to a statement from the KDF signed by Lt-Col Paul Njuguna , “Over 70 terrorists were killed and scores wounded in the attack,” which comes hot on the heels of the anniversary of the El-Adde military base attack on January 15 last year, where KDF lost a sizeable number of soldiers manning the camp at the time.
“During this engagement, KDF lost two of its soldiers and seven servicemen,” read the statement dated January 27.
The statement by KDF discredits casualty numbers reported by the Somali-based terror network’s spokesperson Sheikh Abdiasis Abu Musab, who told Reuters that “dozens of soldiers” had been killed while others “ran away into the woods.”
Following the attack, KDF reported that it’s Quick Reaction Force with the support of land and air troops had began an operation in the Lower Juba part of Somalia to capture terrorists who escaped.
Njuguna further dismissed claims by the militants that the Kulbiyow military camp had been completely overran saying the camp remained secure after the early morning attack.
“It is important to note that contrary to information peddled by the terrorists, our camp has not been overran,” Lt-Col Njuguna.
Kenya entered the territories of the war-torn country on October 16, 2011, in efforts to help stabilize Somalia and secure Kenya’s boarders from Al Shabaab elements after several cases of abductions in the coastal cities of Mombasa and Malindi.
KDF is currently in-charge of Sector 2 under the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM) which covers the Gedo, Middle Juba and Lower Juba regions of Somalia.

Two Kenyan police officers were killed and four others seriously wounded on Friday when their vehicle was hit by explosive device along the border with Somalia.
A security officer said the deceased from Administration Police were responding to an attack by Al-Shabaab terrorists on a Kenya Defence Forces base in Kulbiyow when they were attacked.
“We lost two officers while the other four have been admitted at the hospital here in Nairobi.
“They were responding to the attack on KDF base in Somalia,” said an official aware of the incident.
The security officer said their vehicle ran over an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) as it crossed the border to Somalia to rescue KDF personnel who were under siege. The injured were flown to Nairobi for specialized treatment and those who saw them said they had serious multiple injuries.
“Reinforcements deployed by the KDF in Kenya encountered massive IEDs along the MSR (military service requirements) and had to abandon mission,” said the official. A reinforcement that arrived hours later managed to take control of the base.
Somali militants staged a dawn attack on KDF camp in Kolbiyow and killed an unknown number of Kenyan soldiers who are part of the AMISOM troops. The militants used twin suicide vehicle bound improvised explosive devices (SVBIED).
KDF said it sent reinforcement which was able to destroy two vehicles loaded with improvised explosive devices within the vicinity of their Forward Operating Base (FOB) at Kulbiyow, an area near Kenya’s border with Somalia.

[BenarNews] A military offensive has apparently wounded the leader of a Daesh affiliate in the Philippines who is linked to a newly uncovered terrorist cell in Malaysia, as well as killed four militants including a Malaysian.
Isnilon Hapilon, reportedly fled from a camp in Lanao del Sur province after being wounded in a military operation on Wednesday and Thursday that consisted of ground and air strikes, Philippine military chief of staff Gen. Eduardo Ano said.
Reports said Hapilon suffered an arm injury and had to be carried by others during his escape. The news reports did not identify the Malaysian who was killed.
Terror experts have described Hapilon, a former Abu Sayyaf leader, as the head of IS Philippines, and Malaysian and Indonesian supporters of the group last year referred to him as their regional "emir" in an IS propaganda video.
His reported injury is the second blow to IS Philippines this month. On January 5, another Daesh leader based in the southern Philippines, Mohammad Jaafar Maguid, also known as Tokboy, was gunned down by security forces on a Mindanao beach. He was the founder and leader of Ansarul Khilafa Philippines (AKP), one of the three groups that make up the Philippine branch of IS.
Malaysia's police chief Khalid Abu Bakar said that security forces in the eastern state of Sabah were ready to intercept militants trying to flee. He said, "We fully support Philippines forces’ assault on the terrorist groups in the south. We will give our fullest cooperation. Our front-line troops have been put on alert for any attempt by these terrorist members to flee the south and take refuge in Sabah."
Earlier this week, Khalid announced that police had arrested a Filipino and two Bangladeshis along with a Malaysian woman. He said the four were part of a new Daesu cell that planned to use Sabah as a transit point for sending militants to the Philippines. The cell had received orders from Hapilon and a former lecturer at Malaya University, Mahmud Ahmad.

A military offensive has apparently wounded the leader
Somehow this doesn't sound like the kind of announcement one would have see during WWII.
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Syrian Arab Army has officially taken control of the al-Fijeh Springs of Wadi Barada after more than 4 weeks of fighting with the jihadist rebels in this rural Damascus valley.
Syrian TV reported directly from the al-Fijeh Springs today, showing images of the Syrian Arab Army raising the flag over this strategic site that is responsible for supply water to an estimated 5 million people in Damascus.
With the Syrian Army in control of Wadi Barada, the remaining jihadist rebels will be transferred to the Idlib Governorate, where they will be reacquainted with their comrades.
The water supply to Damascus was cutoff 44 days ago when the jihadist rebels poisoned the water supplied to government areas in the capital.
As a result of this act committed by the jihadist rebels, the Syrian Arab Army launched a powerful assault to recapture the Wadi Barada area after a 4 year absence.

" (formerly al-Nusra ...formally Jabhat an-Nusrah li-Ahli al-Sham (Support Front for the People of the Levant), also known as al-Qaeda in the Levant. They aim to establish a pan-Arab caliphate. Not the same one as the Islamic State, though .. ... Front) announced the formation of a new rebel force that will merge their organization with other rebel factions in Syria.
Five rebel factions, including Jabhat Fateh al-Sham, agreed to disband and form a new group that will be called "Hey'sah Tahrir al-Sham" (Levant Liberation Body).
The disbanded rebel factions include Jabhat Fateh al-Sham, Harakat Nouriddeen al-Zinki, Liwaa al-Haq, Liwaa Ansar al-Deen, and Jaish al-Sunnah; these groups originally participated in several battles in northern Syria before disbanding this weekend.
The leader of this new jihadist organization will be "Abu Jaber Hashem al-Sheikh," the statement added.
It's important to note that Harakat Nouriddeen al-Zinki was once supplied with U.S. manufactured anti-tank guided missiles (ATGM) before being declared "non-moderates" by the U.S. regime.

Story of my life, dood. Even then, if some one had thrown me a line in trig, I mighta amounted to something. Wistful sigh.
Cartographers? Chroniclers, chartless,
Asea, citing say-so, so artless!
Sand, storms always brewing,
Sad shipwreck, and ruin...
The currents of history are heartless.
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) launched a surprise offensive in the Qalamoun Mountains on Friday night, targeting the Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Led by the Qalamoun Shield of the 3rd Armored Division, the Syrian Arab Army advanced along the eastern slopes, liberating several hilltops after swiftly sweeping through the Islamic State's defenses on Saturday.
According to an al-Masdar field correspondent in Damascus, the Syrian Arab Army liberated a number hilltops in the Qalamoun Mountains, including Tal al-Dab` al-Sharqi after a fierce battle with the Islamic State.
The al-Masdar correspondent added that dozens of Islamic State bad boyz were potted during the assault; this forces them to retreat to the al-Barada area of the Homs countryside.
As a result of these gains, the Syrian Arab Army is now advancing on the al-Barada area, attacking the Islamic State's defenses from two different axes

[ALMASDARNEWS] In early January, the Syrian Arab Army's "Tiger Forces" launched a large-scale offensive to liberate the al-Bab Plateau from the Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems.... (ISIS) Lions of Islam in east Aleppo.
The Tiger Forces would liberate several villages and hilltops from the Islamic State, while pushing north to the terrorist group's main stronghold in the eastern countryside of Aleppo.
According to an al-Masdar field correspondent, the Syrian Arab Army has liberated at least 23 villages from the Islamic State forces, killing and wounding over 150 Lions of Islam in the process.
This Syrian Arab Army offensive in east Aleppo has been backed by heavy Russian and Syrian Arclight airstrikes on the al-Bab Plateau; this has paved the way for the government's advance in east Aleppo.
Meanwhile in the north, the Turkish Armed Forces have repeatedly attempted to enter the city of al-Bab; however, they have repeatedly failed, despite assistance from the Russian Air Force.
The Turkish Armed Forces have lost several soldiers and a large amount of military equipment during their al-Bab campaign, making this operation a major for them this year.

[ALMASDARNEWS] As the so-called "Rebel Civil War" rages in Idlib province, certain factions within the Ahrar al-Sham ...a Syria jihadi group made up of Islamists and salafists, not that there's that much difference, formed into a brigade. They make up the main element of the Islamic Front but they don't profess adoration of al-Qaeda and they've been fighting (mainly for survival) against the Islamic State. Their leadership was wiped out at a single blow by a suicide kaboom at a crowded basement meeting in September, 2014... coalition, which only yesterday was opposed to Jabhat Fateh al-Sham ...formerly al-Nusra, the current false nose and mustache of al-Qaeda in the Levant... (JFS) as a whole, are now joining the JFS-led Hai'at Tahrir al-Sham (Levant Liberation Body) operations room.
In the last few hours reports have been leaking in that sub-factions within Ahrar al-Sham are now joining the Hai'at Tahrir al-Sham alliance. The groups (so far) have been identified as the al-Aqsa (not to be mistaken for Jund al-Aqsa) and Suqour Asham battalions.
The split could almost be anticipated, first due to Ahrar al-Sham's historical tendency for political fracture (the group has formally split within its own ranks at least two times prior to this most recent one) and, secondly, due to the unrelenting offensive unleashed by JFS against non-obliging "rebel" groups which was bound to drive the hardline Salafist elements of Ahrar al-Sham away from the supposedly less radical bully boy Islamists of the group.
The Hai'at Tahrir al-Sham operations room is a JFS initiative and represents, in every respect, the consolidation of JFS political and military power and economic interests within Idlib province. This being said, it is interesting to note that the "general commander" of the alliance is Abu Jaber al-Shaykh (not to be mistaken with the "military leader" Abu Mohammad al-Julani), a former Ahrar al-Sham commander who defected in September 2015.
Abu Jaber al-Shaykh's presence as a high-ranking commander within Hai'at Tahrir al-Sham may also have played a part in tipping the loyalty of certain factions within Ahrar al-Sham towards a formal conglomeration JFS.
