NY man convicted of plotting to target Muslims with weaponized X-ray machine
[Wash Times] A jury convicted a New York man, "a self-professed member of the Ku Klux Klan," Friday of charges related to plotting to develop a weapon of mass destruction -- an X-ray machine modified into a lethal radiation device -- to be used against Muslims in the U.S.

Glendon Scott Crawford, 51, of Galway, New York, was convicted of attempting to produce and use a radiological dispersal device and conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction; and distributing information relating to weapons of mass destruction, Justice Department officials said in a statement.

The first charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison and the second charge up to 20 years in prison.

"He also faces a $2 million fine on the attempting to produce and use a radiological dispersal device charge, and a fine of $250,000 on the other two charges," Justice officials said.

Crawford's defense attorney Kevin Luibrand told The Associated Press his client had no criminal history, and they will file a notice of appeal after the sentencing.

British adventurer lost for two days in the Australian outback after taking wrong turn
[TELEGRAPH.CO.UK] For Geoff Keys, British round-the-world adventurer, it no doubt looked like a handy short cut. Keen to avoid a long trip back to camp during a journey by river through the Australian outback, he decided would march through the jungle instead.

Two days later, his wrong turn has earned him worldwide attention after he became hopelessly lost in one of the world's most hostile terrains.

The spritely 63-year-old had been swimming down a river in Jardine National Park, Queensland when he decided that he could cut across the bush - without any shoes - rather than continue swimming.

The retired AA mechanic soon became hopelessly lost in the 900 square mile park, which wandered through without any food and only wearing shorts, a T-shirt and a hat. He was found eight miles from his camp two days later by rescuers, who spent £375,000 flying helicopters to find him, the Mirror reported.

He later admitted that he felt "stupid but lucky". "I'm sorry about the worry caused to friends and family," he said. "Please believe me, I won't be doing it again."

The ordeal began when Mr Keys, from Dartford, Kent, was swimming from Canal Creek, where his campsite was, to Eliot Falls and then back again. As darkness fell, he decided to get out of the water and cut across the bush rather than swimming the same route he had taken.

"I was convinced the track was nearby and walking back would have been easier," he said.

It was not. Having tried to work out rough directions by using both the setting sun and rising moon, he simply grew more lost. He then came across stream and followed it, assuming it was the one that led back to the camp. Two hours later he realised it was a different one.

When he failed to return to camp that night, his friends reported him missing. By midday the following day he had become desperate that he stopped on a sandbank and scrawled 'HELP 2807' in large letters in the sand - referring to the day and month he was missing. He also drew an arrow pointing to where he was. "I thought this would be enough to get any helicopter that saw it looking in the right place," he said.

this point his luck finally began began to turn. A few hours later, a pilot noticed Mr Keys after he decided to go outside the original search zone "to scout a little further".

Brad Foat, Queensland police senior constable and land search and rescue officer, said: "I was stoked as the message was the first good clue we had. I made a decision to scout a little further before returning to reassign all the helicopters."

Initially when Mr Keys, father of three adult children,
...all of whom inexplicably have survived thus far...
spotted the helicopter, he jumped up and down waving his hat but was not seen. Luckily it returned.

Despite his contrition - and a pair of badly-cut feet - Mr Keys has confirmed that he will soon be back on the road again with plans to go to Asia, the Middle East, Africa and America.

SWAT Team Raids Wrong Worcester Home, Residents Say
[BOSTON.CBSLOCAL] Marianne Diaz and her fiancé, Bryant Alequin, felt their lives were in danger when a SWAT team raided their third-floor apartment on Hillside Street with guns drawn.

Diaz says she grabbed her seven-year-old and 18-month-old girls and prayed while Worcester coppers and State Police troopers executed a search warrant.

"It was terrorizing, and the worst thing I've ever been through in my life. They were loud, vulgar, and disgusting in behavior," she said.

It happened on Wednesday around 5:30 in the morning.

Alequin says he was in the bathroom getting ready for work.

"I was scared, honestly. They put me in handcuffs, they were very tight, and it was ugly," he said.

Turns out they were not the people police were looking for.

"I just want there to be a full-on investigation, and give us an explanation as to why they did this to my family and why they terrorized us the way they did," Diaz says.

The family's attorney, Hector Pineiro, says his clients rights were violated.

"You can imagine 10 officers looking and pointing guns at a naked 23-year-old mother protecting her two kids. The horrific language and pointing of weapons at children cannot be justified under any circumstances," he said.

Police have raided the apartment before, but Diaz moved in back in May with her fiancé and two children.

The person that used to live there does have a criminal record, but Diaz and her family have never been in trouble with law.

"They came into my house like that when they did not have their facts right," Alequin said.

The DA's office released a statement saying "The search warrant was executed based on the best intelligence at the time. He (the target) had been in the dwelling in the days before the execution of the search warrant."

Pineiro strongly disagrees.

"It's clear to me that the (district attorney's) office is not going to look into what happened because he's already giving the blessing they acted on the best intelligence, which is a complete joke," he said.

The family has not yet decided if they will file a lawsuit.

#2  One more in a depressingly long line of incidents like this.

This is why the police are held in such low regard among those who are in the target demographic. Insty has some good thoughts on this type of thing starting with getting rid of qualified immunity.

The DAs and those in charge of this should be personally responsible.

#5  Nothing says "police state" like SWAT team at 3 a.m. I'm trying to recall how police handled such things before they got the black soldier suits and started learning infantry tactics.

On the other hand, I've also got a son who's done his own share of door kicking. Since Black Lives Matter so very much and entire cities are being turned over to career criminals (besides their political oppressors) I guess this sort of horror had to become more common. It was pretty much under the radar until the Elian Gonzalez picture.

Posted by: Fred || 08/25/2015 9:57 Comments || Top||

#6  Best way to get this to stop is to make the people that were involved in the raid and the planning and the authorization personally liable and they can be fined thousands of dollars that go to the aggrieved party.

You kick in the wrong door, you lose a month's paycheck.

Raids like this will end overnight and the police will make damn sure the door they kick in is the right one.

Around 10pm, the caretaker of his neighbour's house, Firoz, informed him that Sohel had been stabbed in front of a tea stall on Road 1 in Dhaka Udyan area.

When he went there, locals told him his son had been taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Rushing there, he learnt that the on-duty doctors had declared Sohel dead around 11:50pm.

Later, Mannan filed the murder case with Mohammadpur cop shoppe, accusing seven people including Badrul.

Bangladesh charges 10 for 'beating boy to death'
[ARABNEWS] A magistrate in northeastern Bangladesh accepted charges against 10 men and issued arrest warrants for three alleged runaways Monday in the beating death of a 13-year-old boy that stunned a nation used to violent crime because a video of him being tortured was posted online.

Magistrate Shahedul Karim decided to accept the police charges and fixed Aug. 31 for the next hearing, prosecution counsel Misbahuddin Siraj said. More hearings will be needed before the accused are formally indicted and the final phase of the trial can begin, Siraj said.

The boy, Samiul Islam Rajon, died of internal bleeding after being attacked in the northeastern city of Sylhet. The attackers allegedly were punishing him for stealing a bicycle, an allegation his family and police say is unfounded.

The alleged runaways include the main suspect, Kamrul Islam, who has been detained in Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
and is awaiting repatriation. Ten men are behind bars after being nabbed
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
with the help of local residents, who were said to have caught some of the attackers when they tried to dump the body.

Some of the accused men said they were innocent. The charges include murder or helping the alleged attackers. Defendants convicted of murder could face the death penalty.

Siraj said the magistrate at Monday's hearing also asked the authorities to confiscate property of the runaways.

The chilling, 28-minute video went viral online, triggering protests in the South Asian country, where such incidents are not rare. His body bore at least 64 injury marks, according to an autopsy report.

In the cellphone video, the boy is heard screaming in pain and pleading with his attackers: "Don't beat me, please, will die, will die." The attackers laughed at the boy when he asked for water.

Russia 'sends more troops to eastern Ukraine' as leaders get together for crisis summit
[TELEGRAPH.CO.UK] Fears of a return to all out warfare continue to mount in Ukraine after Petro Poroshenko, the Ukrainian president, accused Russia of sending fresh troops and equipment into the eastern part of the country.

The comments come ahead of a summit on the crisis between Mr Poroshenko, Angela Merkel
...current chancellor of Germany. She was educated in East Germany when is was still run by commies, but in 1989 got involved with the growing democracy movement when the Berlin Wall fell. Merkel is sometimes referred to by Germans as Mom...
, and Francois Hollande
...the Socialist president of La Belle France, an economic bad joke for la Belle France but seemingly a foreign policy realist...
in Berlin, where the three leaders are expected to discuss how to keep a peace agreement signed in February from falling apart.

Nearly 7,000 people have died since the war between Ukrainian government forces and Russian-backed separatists broke out in April 2014.

Speaking at an independence day parade in Kiev, Mr Poroshenko praised Ukraine's diplomats and soldiers for their work in what he called a "war for independence", but warned that the danger of a return to all-out hostilities remained high.

"Moscow's 'army surplus' has supplied fighters with 500 tanks, up to 400 artillery systems, and 950 fighting vehicles," he said.

"Just this week three big convoys crossed out border towards Lugask, Donetsk, and Debaltseve," he continued.
Our 'leading from behind' strategy may end soon. The NORKS, Chinese, and the RU's have little time remaining to adjust their respective geographies.

China-Japan-Koreas
North Korea takes issue with speakers along border because they mock Kim
[WASHINGTONPOST] For the last two weeks, speakers in the 2.5-mile-wide demilitarized zone that separates the two Koreas have been blaring out messages that amount to outrageous treachery, at least to North Korean ears.

"Kim Pudge Jong-un
...the overweight, pouty-looking hereditary potentate of North Korea. Pudge appears to believe in his own divinity, but has yet to produce any loaves and fishes, so his subjects remain malnourished...
's incompetent regime is trying to deceive the world with its lame lies," a kind-sounding woman says in a slow, deliberate voice emanating from one of the banks of 48 speakers set up along the South Korean side of the military demarcation line. The messages can travel about 12 miles at night and about half that during the day, well into North Korean territory.

Another message notes that Kim Jong-un, who took over from his father, Kim Jong Il, at the end of 2011, hasn't yet traveled abroad or met a single foreign leader.

"President Park Geun-hye has . . . visited many countries since she became the president, including three visits to China," one of the recorded messages says, referring to the South Korean president and her close relationship with Beijing, North Korea's supposed patron. "However,
some men learn by reading. A few learn by observation. The rest have to pee on the electric fence for themselves...
Kim Jong-un hasn't visited any other countries in the three-plus years since he became leader."

At other times, the speakers play peppy southern K-pop songs like "Tell Me Your Wish" by Girls' Generation. ("Tell me your wish, tell me your little dream, imagine your ideal type in your head, and look at me, I'm your genie, your dream, your genie.")

These messages are at the crux of the latest showdown on the Korean Peninsula, with Pyongyang ferociously demanding that the psychological warfare end and the speakers be dismantled, or it will take "strong military action."

"Psychological warfare against [North Korea] is, in essence, an open act of war against it," the North's state-run Korean Central News Agency said Friday. Marathon talks about defusing the current conflict continued into a third day Monday, with little sign of progress but also no failure.

NORKS agree to truce with ROK, sez 'regrets' its actions
[The Telegraph] North Korea has promised to cause no further provocation to South Korea and expressed "regret" for its actions in a last-minute climb down which is hoped to prevent open warfare on the peninsula.
Cheque clears, everyone happy now.
The two Koreas had been locked in tense negotiations in an abandoned village on the peninsula's border after regime leader Kim Jong-un declared a "quasi state of war" on Friday.

But at 2am local time it was revealed the crisis talks had ended with both sides agreeing on a truce.

For its part, South Korea promised it would cease blaring out anti-Pyongyang propaganda from loudspeakers at noon on August 25.

The gesture is said to have triggered this week's violent tensions on the peninsula and led to an exchange of artillery fire earlier this week.

North Korea added that it would lift its "quasi war status" and both sides are said to have agreed on working to reunite families separated in the Korean war.

The blaze came just hours after a blast ripped through a warehouse at a U.S. military post near Tokyo, sending sparks into the sky and triggering a blaze that burned through the night, although there were no reports of injuries.

Local police declined to speculate on whether there was any link between the two incidents.

Japan refuses to take part in China's 'Victory Day' event to mark end of war
The prime minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, will not attend Victory Day events in Beijing next month to mark the end of the second world war, partly in protest against China's military build-up in regional waters, Japanese media said.

The chief cabinet secretary, Yoshihide Suga, said Abe had decided against attending commemorative events around 3 September - the day China marks the success of its "war of resistance against Japanese aggression" - so he could oversee the passage of controversial security legislation at home.
More at link including video of Chinese marching soldiers and airplanes, the usual stuff that is seen in parades put on by totalitarian regimes.

Oil prices fall sharply in volatile trading
[ARABNEWS] Crude oil futures fell sharply to fresh 6-1/2-year lows on Monday, then pared losses in volatile trading as a dive in Chinese equities sparked more fears of drastically curbed oil consumption even as a supply glut pressures prices.

A near 9-percent tumble in China shares roiled global markets and sent the Dow Jones Industrial Average down more than 1,000 points in early trading, before Wall Street pared losses.

"China's drop pushed everything lower and now we'll see if the bounce by US stocks after the early pull back can stop the slide," said Phil Flynn, analyst at Price Futures Group in reliably Democrat Chicago, aka The Windy City or Mobtown
... home of Al Capone, a succession of Daleys, Barak Obama, and Rahm Emmanuel,...
.

Brent October crude was down $2.33 at $43.13 a barrel at 11:37 a.m. EDT (1537 GMT), after plunging to a contract low of $42.51, off 6.5 percent from Friday and the lowest front-month price since March 2009.

Off 16 percent in August, Brent is heading for a fourth straight monthly loss.

Southern Company to buy AGL in $12B dollar deal.
About time for some good market news I'd say.
But is it better for the customers? I ask because I have no idea what the answer is.

#1  Good question TW. From my vantage point as a customer, I'd have to say yes. Rates are reasonably stable and service is excellent. Their employees are dedicated and professional. Employee turnover is low. The company itself appears to be financially solid and well tuned into the needs of the community. Others here may have additional. This is just my observation.

Europe
Greece: Newly Formed Party Receives Mandate to Form Gov't
[NYTIMES] A new anti-austerity party formed by rebel politicians who quit the governing left-wing Syriza was given its chance Monday to seek government coalition partners and prevent Greece from holding its third national vote this year, although chances of averting the election are virtually nil.

Former Energy Minister Panagiotis Lafazanis, who heads the newly formed Popular Unity, received the maximum three-day mandate from the country's president after the head of the main opposition conservative New Democracy failed to form a government.

Neither of the two parties was expected to find willing coalition partners, and early elections are practically guaranteed in September following the resignation of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras last week, seven months into his four-year term. The most likely date is seen as Sept. 20.

Stealing From Wal-Mart Is Not a Crime, UW Relations Director Declares

Everett D. Mitchell is the Director of Community Relations at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is also an attorney, pastor, and community leader.

At a recent panel discussing "Best Policing Practices," Mitchell said that police should stop prosecuting individuals who shoplift from Wal-Mart and Target.

His reasoning? He simply does not believe that police have any justification to engage in policing practices with thieves who steal from Wal-Mart or Target because they are big box stores with insurance:

"I just don't think they should be prosecuting cases for people who steal from Wal-Mart. I don't think that. I don't think that Target, and all them other places -- the big boxes that have insurance -- they should be using the people that steal from there as justification to start engaging in aggressive police behavior."

He begins his speech by advocating legal relativism - the notion that communities should decide for themselves which laws be enforced and which laws are not in order to better recognize what safety means for the specific community.

Does Wal-Mart get a say in which laws are enforced, as well Mr. Mitchell? They are, after all, in the community as well.

Watch the 1:18 minute video here (via MediaTrackers.org):

Where is the line drawn with these anti-police activists?

Just a few weeks prior, fellow Wisconsin professors, Karma ChĂ vez and Sara L. McKinnon wrote a letter to the Capital Times (progressive Wisconsin news outlet) titled: Sara L. McKinnon and Karma ChĂ vez: Request for no police interaction is reasonable" In it, they argue that police are an occupying force and have no valid reason to patrol certain neighborhoods.

#4  This has nothing to do with money and everything to do with establishing an ugly environment.

This is merely an extension of Trayvon Martin and "hands up don't shoot" mythos. The idea is to establish a precedent that black people can do whatever they want, whenever they want, to white people and white people should not be permitted to resist in any way. Period.

Once you understand that this is REALLY what this pastor and everyone else Ike him are really all about - black privilege to be above the law - you understand the real danger of this sort of talk.

#8  the notion that communities should decide for themselves which laws be enforced and which laws are not in order to better recognize what safety means for the specific community.

Gee, sounds to me like the basis of all governments. Whether the community decides on a form of democracy, autocracy or tyranny is immaterial.

His question really seems to be the definition of community. Here we have towns, states and feds. As a good tribalist he seems to want separate governments at a much finer granularity.........exactly what community does he lead?

Sounds like academic justification for his desire for his personal tyranny, no?

#9  "Insurance" is the excuse for down playing theft. It's still taking part of one's life, one spent accumulating the resources to procure the goods or property and is never equal to the full costs. It's like taking time from someone's life, a life that is finite and never really recoverable. It's really not a crime against 'property' but against 'life'.

#11  BP, the socialists will just rewrite the commerce laws like they did with banking, forcing business to (take loses) open stores in such areas. When you go full blown central planning from the party headquarters capital, it's easy when you play with other people's money and resources (and then you wonder why the rich spend so much money corrupting the system buying politicans).

Mitchell was awarded the prestigious Princeton Presidential Fellowship and Princeton Seminary’s Jane Swoop Christian Ethics Award for the class of 2003. He also served as the Executive Administrator for the Imani Community Center.UW Bio

I suspect the Christian Ethics is from the Rev. Jeremiah Wright school and the Social Ethics is from the Community Organizer's book of rules. Mentored, no doubt, by Champ, himself.

#17  Which community sets the standards? The nation, the state, the city, the people who live nearby, the people who shop there, the people who get caught stealing?

If the local community gets to set whatever standards they please, does that mean "Don't let the sun set on you here" signs are permissible?

I gather that whatever Mitchell learned at law school went in one ear and out the other.
...
That's odd: his church has a "Mime ministry". Not the most felicitous phrasing, but I think I get the idea.

#18  The federal government's decided that laws on evicting illegals aren't enforced and local governments have decided that upholding laws protecting the country from illegal invaders are not to be upheld either.
