Afghanistan
Clashing reports over 'death' of Mullah Omar
More on the death of Mullah Omar.
[DAWN] The leader of the Afghan Taliban, Mullah Omar, has died, a report on the BBC website quoted unnamed Afghan government sources as saying on Wednesday. The report said that the reclusive one-eyed leader of the militant organisation had died two to three years ago.
The body's starting to stink, is it? Shoulda had him freeze dried.
The Afghan Taliban and sources close to the insurgent group’s mediators, who are holding talks with the Afghan government in Pakistan, insist that the Taliban chief has not died, according to a report on the Voice of America website.
"'e's just pinin' for the fjords!"
Mullah Omar “is very much alive” and the rumors of his death are aimed at drawing out the reclusive leader, a Taliban spokesman was quoted by the VOA as saying.
If you can't beleve theTaliban who can you believe?
Meanwhile, an Afghan government official said that an emergency press conference had been called on the subject of Taliban leader Mullah Omar, amid rumours of his death. The official, who declined to be named because he was not authorised to give statements to the press, did not provide further details but added that Kabul was investigating his reported death.
Did I read that right? An unidentified Kabul official calls a press conference to report nothing much but sez they've got 'top people' on it
Another senior Afghan government official quoting a senior Taliban leader said the reclusive leader of the Afghan Taliban had died of multiple organ failure a year and a half ago and was subsequently buried in Kandahar.
To all those who prayed for sepsis, a great big thank you.
He further said that an 8-member Taliban Shura will hold a meeting to choose Omar's successor for six month to one year and added that there are no clear contenders at the moment but many senior taliban leaders are being considered for the post.
He'll probably inherit the Profit's carpet slippers and face mask.
Update from Tolo News at 3 pm ET:
Ghani's Office Confirms Death of Mullah Omar

"The government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, based on credible information,
...carefully left undefined...
confirms that Mullah Mohammad Omar, leader of the Taliban died in April 2013 in Pakistan," President Ashraf Ghani's office said in a statement.
Some some speculation about possible heirs to the crown, then:
But questions have been raised over who wrote Omar's Eid statements and other messages over the past two years.

This year's Taliban Eid message, which was reportedly written quite politely compared to previous notes, was however welcomed by the Afghan President Ashraf Ghani.

Mullah "Blinky" Omar One with Osama

Mullah Mohammad Omar, the spiritual leader of the Taliban, is dead, according to Afghan officials and a person close to the group.

His death raises questions about who will lead the movement that allied with al Qaeda, fought a war with the U.S. and is now divided over whether to pursue an elusive peace deal with Afghanistan's new government.

A spokesman for the Taliban couldn't immediately be reached for comment Wednesday, and it remains unclear when and how Mullah Omar died. An Afghan official briefed on the matter said the Pakistan government informed Kabul he had died two years ago.

Mullah Omar hasn't been seen publicly since the early months of the U.S.-led invasion of 2001, leading to speculation that he had died‐a rumor the Taliban has repeatedly sought to quash.

News of his death comes at a difficult time for the movement, which is deeply divided over whether to pursue peace talks with the Afghan government with the aim of ending the 14-year war.

Taliban overruns another district in northern Afghanistan
[LongWarJournal] The Taliban continues to press its offensive on multiple fronts in the Afghan north, taking control of Kohistanat district in the once calm province of Sar-i-Pul after a police commander and his officers defected to the jihadist group. According to the Taliban, its forces "raised the white flag of [the] Islamic Emirate" over the district headquarters and other government buildings earlier today.

The Taliban overran Kohistanat after launching its assault on July 26. The fall of the northern district was confirmed by a member of Sar-i-Pul's provincial council, a police spokesman, and the Taliban.

Both Afghan officials and the Taliban said that a local police commander and his officers defected to the Taliban at the opening of the fighting. An "Afghan Local Police [ALP] officer together with seven of his men joined [the] Taliban," Khaama Press reported. The ALP officer had previously been linked to the Taliban, a police spokesman said. According to a Taliban statement released on Voice of Jihad, "a key Arbaki commander -- Hassan -- made contact and joined up with Mujahideen along with 100 fully armed men" on July 26. Arbaki are local tribal militias that often back the government in its fight against the Taliban.

Egypt police kill 2 Ajnad Misr militants in gun battle in Giza
[AlAhram] Egyptian police have killed two men suspected of involvement in violence against the state, state news agency MENA reported late Monday.

A security source told MENA that police had obtained information that two members of the Islamist krazed killer group Ajnad Misr [Soldiers of Egypt] were present in an apartment on Faisal Street, Giza.

MENA reported that the "terrorists" opened fire on officers upon their arrival at the apartment, "prompting police to shoot [the two men] dead."

Ajnad Misr has grabbed credit for several deadly attacks against police in Cairo, including an kaboom near the Ittihadiya presidential palace in June 2014 that killed two coppers, and a blast outside the foreign ministry in September of the same year that also left two coppers dead.

Police also announced killing a leader of the group in April, Hammam Mohammed Attiyah, also in a shootout at an apartment in Cairo.
An Nahar adds:
Egyptian police potted two alleged jihadists suspected of involvement in the recent bombing of the Italian consulate in Cairo in a raid Monday on an apartment in the capital, security officials said.

"The two jihadists belonged to Ajnad Misr (Soldiers of Egypt) and investigations reveal that they could be involved in the bombing of the Italian consulate," one official said, adding they were also wanted "for their role in assassinating coppers".

group had claimed the July 11 bombing of the consulate -- the first such attack on a foreign mission in Egypt since jihadists launched a campaign against the country's security forces two years ago following a crackdown on Islamists. A civilian was killed and nine others were maimed in the attack.

Police say Attiya previously belonged to Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, the Egyptian branch of the Islamic State group, and that he broke away in 2013 to found Ajnad Misr, a group operating mainly in Cairo.

Colonel Gaddafi's son Saif al-Islam is sentenced to death
[Daily Mail] The son of Libya's former dictator Colonel Gaddafi has been sentenced to death in absentia after he was found guilty of committing war crimes in the Libyan Civil War.

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi is currently being held by a former rebel group in the Libyan town of Zintan after he attempted to cross the desert into neighbouring Niger.

He spoke to the court via a video link after his captors refused to allow him to leave Zintan and attend the trial in Tripoli.

Gaddafi and eight other associates were sentenced to death by firing squad after being found guilty of ordering the brutal suppression of demonstrations during the bloody uprising.

Well known for gesturing aggressively with his hands in interviews with journalists, Saif had to have several of his fingers amputated after they were badly injured in an airstrike in 2011.

The Gaddafi regime's former chief of intelligence, Abdallah al-Senousi, has also been sentenced to death but like Mr al-Islam, he will be able to appeal the decision.

Also facing trial was one of Gaddafi's former Prime Ministers, Baghdadi al-Mahmoudi as well as former foreign minister Abdul Ati al-Obeidi and ex-intelligence chief Buzeid Dorda.

Prison sentences ranging from five years to life imprisonment were also handed out to several other Gaddafi era associates.

Ministry: Two Bahrain Police Killed in 'Terror' Blast
[AnNahar] A kaboom killed two Bahrain coppers and maimed six others Tuesday in an area often shaken by festivities between security forces and Shiite Moslem protesters, the interior ministry said.

Bahrain has seen frequent unrest since the minority Sunni rulers of the small Gulf kingdom crushed a Shiite-led uprising four years ago.

The blast in Sitra island outside the capital Manama comes days after the Bahraini authorities announced they had foiled an attempt to smuggle weapons from Iran.

Bahrain's main Shiite opposition al-Wefaq condemned the bombing, insisting that it "categorically rejected" violence.

Police blocked routes leading to the island following the kaboom -- the latest in a series of blasts targeting police in Shiite villages, witnesses said.

"The explosives used in the terrorist incident are of the same quality of explosives seized recently while being smuggled from Iran," the BNA state news agency reported.

The interior ministry described the blast as a "terror" attack.

Footage of the aftermath of the kaboom showed a shrapnel-riddled police bus with shattered windows.

Since the Arab Spring-inspired 2011 uprising, protesters demanding political reforms have clashed frequently with security forces in Shiite villages outside Manama.

Human rights groups say at least 89 people have been killed.

Prominent opposition figures have been placed in durance vile
Please don't kill me!
, including the leader of the Shiite opposition Ali Salman, who was sentenced in June to four years in prison for inciting disobedience and hatred.

Al-Wefaq, which is headed by Salman, condemned the bombing.

"Such incidents have nothing to do with the peaceful (opposition) movement... that demands democratic change in Bahrain," it said in a statement.

Air Strikes and Clashes Shatter Yemen Truce
All truces in Yemen ought to be written in scare quotes.
[AnNahar] A humanitarian truce
..The purposes of a truce are twofold: 1.) bring up more arms, ammunition, and reinforcements; and 2.) get the enemy to relax his vigilance. A truce is not the same thing as a ceasefire, and a ceasefire doesn't mean you have to stop shooting...
in Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
has failed to take hold after Saudi-led warplanes resumed raids Tuesday on rebels, who clashed with loyalists, military sources said.

Iran, which backs the Shiite Houthis, accused its Sunni regional rival Riyadh of "playing with fire and with the ceasefire".

An international rights group, meanwhile, urged the United Nations
...a formerly good idea gone bad...
to investigate air strikes last week that killed scores of civilians, calling them an "apparent war crime".

The five-day truce that began on Monday was unilaterally declared by the pro-government Arab coalition to allow the delivery of desperately needed relief supplies.

But the coalition, which began its air campaign against the Shiite Houthis and their allies in late March, had said it also reserved the right to strike against any military movement by the bad boys.

Air strikes targeted rebels north of Aden, Yemen's second city, most of which was recaptured by loyalists last week after four months of ferocious fighting, military sources said.

Raids also struck rebels in nearby restive Lahj
... a Yemeni governate located in the southwestern corner of the Arabian Peninsula. It is the stomping grounds on the southern secessionist al-Harak movement
province, where forces loyal to exiled President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi have tightened the noose on bully boyz in the strategic Al-Anad airbase.

Three air strikes targeted a rebel convoy near Sabr, north of Aden, where loyalists had advanced over the past days, military sources said.

Other raids hit a building occupied by bully boyz in Jaawala -- also north of Aden -- and an overnight strike hit rebels in Marib east of Sanaa, witnesses said.

Fighting around Aden has killed 28 people since Monday, among them 22 rebels, two civilians and two pro-Hadi southern fighters, city health chief Al-Khader Laswar said.

On Monday, coalition warplanes mistakenly hit positions of pro-government forces in Lahj, killing 12 people and wounding 30, military sources and witnesses said.

Iran's deputy foreign minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, accused Riyadh Tuesday of stirring regional unrest.

"Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
, by committing a strategic error in attacking Yemen, is playing with fire and today is playing with the ceasefire," Iranian state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
quoted him as saying.

"The continued use of force in Yemen highlights the lack of security and promotes terrorism in the region," Amir-Abdollahian said.

Bangladesh
JMB chief's son, 7 others arrested
[Dhaka Tribune] Leaders and activists of banned murderous Moslem outfit Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh
The JMB is said to be the youth front of Al Mujahideen, the parent organization that began working toward establishing Bangladesh as an Islamic state in the mid 1990s which remains obscure even today. Other organizations, such as Jama'atul Jihad, JMB, Jagrata Muslim Janata Bangladesh (JMJB), Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HUJI), Hizbut Tawhid, Tawhidi Janata, Islami Jubo Shangha, Islami Shangha, Al Falah A'am Unnayan Shanstha and Shahadat-e al Hiqma are believed to be part of the Al Mujahideen network. The JMB at its peak was reported to contain at least 100,000 members, and an alleged 2,000-man suicide brigade, few of whom actually exploded. JMB allegedly received financial assistance from individual donors in Kuwait, UAE, Bahrain, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Libya. Reports have claimed that funding of JMB by international NGOs like Kuwait based Society of the Revival of Islamic Heritage (RIHS) and Doulatul Kuwait, Saudi Arabia based Al Haramaine Islamic Institute and Rabita Al Alam Al Islami, Qatar Charitable Society and UAE-based Al Fuzaira and Khairul Ansar Al Khairia. The top leadership of JMB was captured in 2005 and hung in 2007, which pretty much shot their bolt.

Sergeant Shot Dead by Kurdish Militant, Says Army
[AnNahar] A Turkish army sergeant was rubbed out by a Kurdish Death Eater near the Iraqi border Tuesday, the military said.

The soldier in civilian clothes "was shot in the head in front of a bank... by a member of the separatist terrorist organization" in Semdinli in the mainly Kurdish southeast, the army said, using a term for the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

The soldier died of his injuries in hospital, it added.

Turkish media said a search operation was going on to find the killer.

Turkey: Jets target 'separatist terrorists' in Sirnak
[AA.TR] Two Turkish F-16 fighter jets dropped bombs on at least three suspected "separatist terrorist organization" targets in the southeastern Sirnak province on Tuesday, the Turkish General Staff said in a statement.
That'd be within Turkey, not in Iraq or Syria, and therefore an internal affair which is none of your business, infidel.
Although the official statement does not specify the name of the group, it is believed that the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) was the target.

According to the statement, the jets struck two anti-aircraft gun positions and a mortar position in Dugun Mountain.

The Turkish General Staff said that the action was taken following an attack on Turkish gendarmerie forces by suspected PKK members in Sirnak's Uludere Karacali Tepe region.

Security forces were now carrying out damage assessment in the aftermath of the Arclight airstrikes, the statement added.

The PKK is listed as a terror organization by the U.S., the EU and The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
.

Turkey recently launched Arclight airstrikes against Daesh and the PKK in Syria and Iraq. On Friday night and in the early hours of Saturday, Turkish jets bombed PKK camps in northern Iraq for the first time in the last two-and-a-half years. Turkey also launched attacks against Daesh. Turkish jets again hit PKK targets inside and outside Turkey on Sunday night.

NATO backs Turkey on Islamic State, some urge peace with Kurds

its full political support in fighting turbans in Syria and Iraq at an emergency meeting on Tuesday but several nations urged Ankara not to undermine the Kurdish grinding of the peace processor by using excessive military force.

Following a 90-minute meeting in Brussels, Turkey won the backing it sought for stepping up its role in the U.S.-led fight against Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. with air strikes.

Ankara made no request to its 27 allies for military help and NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg noted that it had the second-largest army in the alliance.

Instead, the meeting heard how Turkey was carrying out President Tayyip Erdogan's sudden change in strategy against Islamic State -- an al Qaeda breakaway that controls swathes of Syria and Iraq -- and Kurdish turbans based in Iraq.

"We all stand united in condemning terrorism, in solidarity with Turkey," Stoltenberg told a news conference.

The killing of 32 young students in a Turkish border town near Syria last week drove Ankara into battle against Islamic State - a move NATO welcomes - shedding its previous reluctance. Turkey has a 900 km (560-mile) border with Syria and is also concerned about Kurdish turbans occupying the frontier area.

Some European nations worry that Erdogan is using the opportunity to bomb Kurdish groups he brands a threat to the integrity of the Turkish state but which enjoy some sympathy in the West.

According to a NATO official present at the meeting, several nations called for "a proportionate use of military force" in the action against Kurdish holy warriors.

European allies, who need Turkey's help to combat jihadi fighters returning to Europe, said Turkey's decision to hit Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) camps in Iraq at the weekend was justified. But they made it clear at the same time they do not want Erdogan to abandon several years of a domestic grinding of the peace processor which they supported.

"Reconciliation should continue," the Netherlands' ambassador to NATO, Marjanne de Kwaasteniet, said on Twitter.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but the attack bore the hallmark of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), whose camps in northern Iraq have been bombed by the Turkish air force in recent days and which has struck the pipeline before.
Everything that goes wrong in Turkey will be blamed on the Kurds until this is over. But regardless, the Kurds will still inherit Turkey when their growing population replaces the shrinking Turks.

Turkey detains 35 more suspects in 'anti-terrorist' raid
[AA.TR] Security forces have detained 35 more suspects across five Turkish provinces in an ongoing "anti-terrorist operation", official sources said Tuesday.

Most of the suspects allegedly belong to Daesh, the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), the far-left Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front (DHKP-C) and the Patriotic Revolutionist Youth Movement (YDG-H) linked to PKK.

In the eastern Elazig province, five people were detained in an operation against the PKK and the Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK). The suspects included a former Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) provincial chairman Turan Celik.

All pro-Kurdish politicians had previously stood for the BDP before the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) was established in 2012.

In the eastern Erzurum province, 14 people were detained in an operation against the YDG-H.

In the eastern Malatya province, at least eight people were detained in an operation against the PKK and the DHKP-C.

In the eastern Mus province, seven people were detained in an operation against the YDG-H.

In the eastern Van province, at least one person was detained in an operation against the YDG-H.

The nationwide operations are the latest in a recent wave of arrests that have seen hundreds of suspected Daesh, PKK and DHKP-C supporters enjugged
Please don't kill me!
across The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
.

On Monday, security forces have detained 1,050 suspects across 34 Turkish provinces since the nationwide "anti-terrorist operations" in the country began, Turkish Prime Minister's Office of Public Diplomacy said in a statement

The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by the U.S., the EU and Turkey.

Florida man charged in alleged backpack bomb plot
[Ynet] A Florida resident has been charged in an alleged backpack bomb plot he planned to carry out in the United States, the Department of Justice said on Tuesday.

Harlem Suarez, also known as Almlak Benitez,
Why?
23, of Key West, Florida, was charged with attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction, the department said.
He got hold of an atom bomb? Suitcase nuke? Chlorine gas cylinder? Or just a semi-automatic handgun with a ten-bullet thingy? It appears everything is inflated these days.
Prosecutors allege that he was inspired by the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. myrmidon group.
NBC News has more details, which make Mr. Suarez sound a bit slow, but enthusiastic.
Harlem Suarez, 23, of Key West -- who also called himself Almlak Benitez -- was tossed in the calaboose
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
Monday after he received what he thought was a working bomb but which was actually a phony device provided by the FBI, the feds said.

"I can go to the beach at night time ... put the thing in the sand ... cover it up ... so next day I just call and the thing is gonna, is gonna make ... a real hard noise from nowhere," Suarez allegedly told a confidential source about his alleged plan to detonate bomb that could be activated by a cell phone, according to a criminal complaint.

Court documents say authorities were alerted by Facebook postings traced to Suarez that attempted to recruit people to join ISIS in committing violent acts.

In May, he made an online order for an AK-47 assault rifle, but it was never delivered, officials said.

Later that month, a source cooperating with the FBI helped Suarez make a video urging "Moslem brothers to buy AK's, knives and machetes and fight."

By July 19, Suarez had purchased two boxes of nails he wanted to be included in a bomb, but he said he didn't know how to build one or how to get explosives, the FBI said. He paid one of the undercover operatives $100, the FBI says, to build it for him.

Suarez was locked away
Into the paddy wagon wit' yez!
when the operative handed him an inert device said to be a bomb on Monday, the FBI said.

Congratulations, Feebs - you nailed one of the slow ones.

India-Pakistan
Lashkar-i-Jhangvi chief Malik Ishaq, two sons killed in Muzaffargarh 'encounter'
[DAWN] Malik Ishaq, chief of banned sectarian outfit Lashkar-e-Jhangvi
... a 'more violent' offshoot of Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistain. LeJ's purpose in life is to murder anyone who's not of utmost religious purity, starting with Shiites but including Brelvis, Ahmadis, Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Rosicrucians, and just about anyone else you can think of. They are currently a wholly-owned subsidiary of al-Qaeda ...
, his two sons Usman and Haq Nawaz, and 11 others were killed in an alleged exchange of fire with police personnel late on Tuesday night.

At least six coppers were maimed in the alleged encounter.

Ishaq and his sons were enjugged
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
by the Counter-Terrorism Department a week ago. Following their latest arrest, the police had interrogated them and had subsequently taken them to Shahwala in Punjab's Muzaffargarh district to aid the police in recovering weapons and explosives, sources in the CTD said.

The encounter appears to have taken place as holy warriors attacked security forces and tried to free Ishaq who was killed in the ensuing exchange of fire, security sources say.

A front man for CTD Multan said Ishaq, his two sons, one Ghulam Rasool Shah and two other accused, all from Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, were taken to Muzaffargarh by the counter-terrorism department to aid in the recovery of arms and explosives.

The front man said that when the police party was returning after making the recovery, it was attacked by some 12 to 15 gunnies who succeeded in freeing Ishaq, his sons and the other accused and fleeing away on cycle of violences.

The holy warriors were met with by SHO CTD cop shoppe who had quickly been informed about the attack on the police party and was travelling on the route that the holy warriors had taken, the front man said, adding that that's how the encounter ensued.

The SHO challenged the holy warriors, resulting in the encounter in which six police personnel sustained injuries, the front man said. They were shifted to the district headquarters hospital.

The front man added that 14 holy warriors, including Malik Ishaq and Ghulam Rasool Shah, were killed by the attackers themselves.

A large amount of weapons and ammunition was recovered from the attacking men and an investigation has been initiated into the events.

All bodies have been shifted to DHQ Muzaffargarh. The bodies of Ishaq and his sons will undergo a postmortem before being taken to Rahim Yar Khan, where he was based.

Lashkar-e-Jhangvi is regarded as the most extreme Sunni terror group in Pakistain and is accused of killing hundreds of Shias after its emergence in the early 1990s. The organization is also said to have links with Al Qaeda.

The organization was banned more than a decade ago by former president Pervez Perv Musharraf
... former dictator of Pakistain, who was less dictatorial and corrupt than any Pak civilian government to date ...
.

Ishaq, who is a leader of the feared organization, has been implicated in dozens of cases, mostly murder.

He was arrested in 1997 and is implicated in dozens of cases. He was released on bail in July 2011 after serving a jail term of nearly 14 years.

Read more: Lashkar-e-Jhangvi and the "lack of evidence"

Since his 2011 release he has been frequently put under house arrest as his sermons raised sectarian tensions. He was also arrested in 2013 over deadly sectarian attacks targeting the Hazara Shia community in Quetta. The first attack took place on Jan 10, 2013 targeting a Hazara snooker hall and killing 92 people and the second kaboom occurred on Feb 16, killing 89 people. The attacks were claimed by Lashkar-e-Jhangvi.

Ishaq was also accused of criminal masterminding, from behind bars, the 2009 attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore, which maimed seven players and an assistant coach, and killed eight Paks.

The attacks saw Pakistain stripped of its right to co-host the 2011 cricket World Cup and jeopardised the future of international cricket in the country.

Incidentally, the article reads like a classic RAB encounter, though no mention of the classic shutter gun, rounds of bullet, or wanted on twelve planets. I wonder how much, beyond the deaths of sundry miscreants and woundings of equally, though fewer, sundry policemen, actually took place in the real world.

#4  It's very late, but I just read an An Nahar article on the story, which provides this perspective:

LeJ, long seen as close to Al-Qaida and more recently accused of developing links with the Islamic State group, has a reputation as one of Pakistan's most ruthless militant groups.

The shootout appears to have wiped out much of the top leadership of LeJ, a driving force in a rising tide of violence targeting Shiite Muslims, who make up around 20 percent of Pakistan's 200 million majority Sunni Muslim population.

ATC convicts Taseer vigil attackers
[DAWN] An anti-terrorism court on Monday handed down a collective imprisonment of sixteen and a half years to each of the five accused who attacked a vigil held by civil society to mark 5th death anniversary of Punjab's slain governor Salman Taseer.

The court convicted the suspects ─ Adeel, Furqan, Kashif, Iftikhar and Wazir Ali ─ under five different sections of laws.

Presiding Judge Haroon Latif Khan handed down five-year term to them under section 7 of Anti-Terrorism Act, three and a half years under Section 365 of the Pakistain Penal Code (PPC), two years, under Section 149 of PPC, three years under Section 153-A of the PPC and three years under section 148 of the PPC.

The court also imposed Rs40,000 fine on each of the convicts who would have to undergo six-month additional imprisonment for failing to pay the amount.

The court acquitted two accused -- Din Muhammad and Sajid -- of charges as they were not found guilty.

Trial of the prime suspect, Mumtaz Sindhi, was yet to be completed.

More than a dozen baton-wielding men had attacked the participants in the candlelight vigil held at Liberty Chowk in Lahore to mark the death anniversary of Salman Taseer on Jan 4, 2015.

The attackers tore the banners, pictures and posters displayed at the venue and also thrashed the activists holding the vigil.

They also raised slogans in favour of Mumtaz Qadri, a former police guard who rubbed out the then governor in Islamabad for supporting a blasphemy convict, Asia Masih, and was later sentenced to death by an anti-terrorism court.

Jail for Jordanians Convicted of Recruiting for Hamas
[AnNahar] Twelve Jordanians were sentenced on Tuesday to jail terms of up to 15 years for their involvement in a cell recruiting members for the Paleostinian Islamist movement Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason,.

Of 16 defendants, "four were acquitted and 12 convicted of terrorist offenses", a judicial source said.

"Four were sentenced in absentia to 15 years in prison, while three detainees got five years," the source said. One was sentenced to three years and four to one year.

All were found guilty of manufacturing explosives, carrying out acts to disturb the peace and "recruiting people on behalf of gangs".

Ties between Jordan and Hamas, the de facto power in the Gazoo Strip, have been strained since 1999 when the kingdom expelled the Paleostinian movement's chief Khaled Meshaal.

Relations between Jordan and Hamas worsened further in 2006 when Amman accused the group of arms trafficking from Syria.

Deadly bombing was Abu Sayyaf retaliation
[Gulf Today] Police blamed Abu Sayyaf militants for setting off a powerful improvised bomb inside a karaoke and massage parlor that killed a female cashier and wounded 10 other people in Zamboanga City on Thursday night.

Police chief Angelito Casimiro disclosed that the slain cashier, Geraldine Miguel, was a witness in the previous bombing of a neighboring bar that led to the arrest of several Abu Sayyaf militants.

Casimiro said, "When the suspect confirmed the presence of Miguel, he signaled his two companions to come in. The suspects entered the bar but they did not stay long and instead left behind a bag containing an improvised explosive device fashioned from a mortar shell."

Fatah Army fighters make rapid gains in Idlib, Hama
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] Syria's strongest allied group, the Fatah Army, has made rapid advance in the western countryside of Idlib and nearby Sahl al-Ghab plain in Hama province, taking control of 12 hills and villages and inflicting humiliating defeats on Syrian regime army, activists and rebel sources said on Tuesday.

The new major offensive by the alliance of Islamist groups, including the Nusra Front and Islamic Ahrar al-Sham
...a Syria jihadi group made up of Islamists and salafists, not that there's that much difference, formed into a brigade. They make up the main element of the Islamic Front but they don't profess adoration of al-Qaeda and they've been fighting (mainly for survival) against the Islamic State. Their leadership was wiped out at a single blow by a suicide kaboom at a crowded basement meeting in September, 2014...
movement, seized control of most of Idlib countryside, only few months since the (Conquest Army)
...the other name for them...
captured Idlib city, Ariha and Jisr al-Shughour towns.

A Syrian military source described the attack as large and widespread. The Death Eaters are seeking to drive into the Sahl al-Ghab plain, an area crucial to the defense of the coastal mountains that are the heartland for Bashir al-Assad's Alawite sect, Rooters reported.

Rebel news feeds on Twitter said Syrian regime forces had failed to defend the hills that overlooks on the Alawite villages. Rebels' superiority in the battle was decisive, they said.

Last week, Fatah Army launched an attack on two Shiite-dominated villages in northern Idlib after two years of siege. Rebels said the attack is in support to the rebels of Zabadani, the Syrian border town with Leb, who are facing brutal assault by regime army and Lebanese Hezbollah militia.

Army of Fatah, a reference to the conquests that spread Islam across the Middle East from the seventh century, has seized swathes of territory northern Syrian since late of March 2015.

Meanwhile,
...back at the wrecked scow, Agent 49 felt gingerly for his head. It was still there. He had been hoping differently...
the Syrian army, one of the region's largest, has been over stretched by a four-year long insurgency where it is battling on several major fronts Salafist tough guys and ultra-hardline jihadist Death Eaters who have seized large swathes of territory. Many young men have fled the country or find ways to avoid conscription.

Some diplomats say the army is now focused on defending strategic areas like Damascus, Homs and strongholds of Assad's minority Alawite sect in coastal areas.

U.S.-led air strikes kill 8 people, including 4 Nusra Front fighters, in Idlib
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] U.S.-led coalition air strikes on Tuesday have killed 8 people, including 4 Nusra Front fighters, in northern province of Idlib, activists said.

Syrian forces, Kurds push Islamic State out of Hasaka city: monitor
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] Syrian government forces and a Kurdish militia have driven Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
fighters out of Hasaka city in Syria's far northeast, a month after the hardline group attacked it, a group monitoring the four-year-old war said on Tuesday.

Hasaka is the capital of a strategically important province that borders territory held by Islamic State in Iraq.

The Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said festivities were continuing in the city's southern outskirts but that Hasaka itself was now free from Islamic State fighters.

Islamic State launched a major attack on the city on June 25, focusing initially on government-held south of Hasaka. The ensuing battle drew in the Kurdish YPG, which held north Hasaka, resulting in the U.S.-backed Kurds fighting Islamic State in close proximity to government forces shunned by Washington.

The Kurdish YPG militia has repeatedly said it does not coordinate with Syrian government forces against their shared enemy, Islamic State.

The Observatory said scores of Islamic State fighters, government troops and allied pro-government militia had been killed since the beginning of the June offensive.

Last week the a YPG front man said the militia was in near full control of the city, a statement at odds with Syrian state media reports of a strong performance by the military.

The government has been focusing on trying to shore up its control over big population centers in western Syria, including the capital Damascus, but Hasaka is one of several areas where it has also sought to preserve control in recent fighting.
