Malalai of Maiwand, also known as Malala, or Malalai Anaa (meaning Malalai the "Grandmother") is a national folk hero of Afghanistan who rallied local Pashtun fighters against the British troops at the 1880 Battle of Maiwand. She fought alongside Ayub Khan and was responsible for the Afghan victory at the Battle of Maiwand on 27 July 1880, during the Second Anglo-Afghan War. She is also known as "The Afghan Jeanne D'Arc" and as "The Afghan Molly Pitcher" to the Western world. There are many schools, hospitals, and other institutions named after her in Afghanistan. 200 Taliban militants surrender to Gen. Dostum in Jawzjan
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] Around 200 Taliban militants renounced violence and surrendered to first Vice-President Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum in northern Jawzjan province on Monday.

The militants laid down their weapons and announced their support from the Government of National Unity in Darzab district, during Gen. Dostum’s visit.

Gen. Dostum is visiting the northern Jawzjan province after he was instructed by President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, according to an online statement from Gen. Dostum’s office.

He welcomed the surrender of Taliban militants and said the move by Taliban militants in Jawzjan is a step that would lead to a nationwide peace and stability.

Gen. Dostum called on other militants to join peace process, similarly as the militants have surrendered in Jawzjan province.

He also pledged to provide employment opportunities for all the militants who laid their weapons and joined peace process.

Jawzjan is among the relatively volatile provinces in northern Afghanistan where anti-government armed militant groups are actively operating in a number of its remote districts and often carry out insurgency activities.

Federal Govt, AU forces liberate new areas in Hiran
JALALAQSI, Somalia -- Somali government forces aided by African Union peacekeepers liberated a string of areas in Hiran region of central Somalia from Al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab militants on Monday, Garowe Online reports. Hero Lugole, Rahale, Jar, Janbiley, Burweyn, Mirgab and Anfac fell to the allied forces.

April 12 division commander, Col. Mohamud Mohamed Qafow told the media that they aim to safely transport a convoy carrying food aid for Al Shabaab-sanctioned town of Bulo Barde.

Somali National Army (SNA) troops were dispatched from Mogadishu to reinforce AU forces in Jalalaqsi through Middle Shabelle regional capital of Jowhar.

Beleaguered Al Shabaab group imposed a blockade on Bulo Barde, denying trucks loaded with food commodities from entry into the town for 10 months.

Somali army alongside African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) forces has dislodged militants from key bastions in central and southern Somalia.
Does seem as if the AU is getting the upper hand in larger parts of Somalia.

US airstrike targets senior Somali militant
[IsraelTimes] US war planes carried out a strike in southern Somalia on Monday targeting a big shot of the al-Shabaab
... Somalia's version of the Taliban, functioning as an arm of al-Qaeda...
militia, the Pentagon said, without giving any details of casualties.

Military front man Rear Admiral John Kirby said the raid hit a target in Saakow, shortly after the Islamist rebel group?s intelligence chief surrendered to government and African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
forces.

Kirby did not identify the targeted Lion of Islam chief by name.

?At this time, we do not assess there to be any civilian or bystander casualties,? he said.

?We are assessing the results of the operation and will provide additional information, when appropriate, as details become available.?

If a senior Lion of Islam was killed in the strike, it would be the latest in a series of setbacks for the militia since the death of its former leader Ahmed Abdi Godane in another US attack in September.

On Saturday, officials said the Al-Qaeda-affiliated group?s intelligence chief Zakariya Ismail Ahmed Hersi, the subject of a $3 million US bounty, had surrendered to Somali government forces.

But despite recent setbacks, the Shabaab, which is fighting to topple a weak but internationally recognized government propped up by African Union troops, has proved resilient.

On Thursday, its fighters launched a brazen attack on the AU force?s heavily-fortified headquarters at Mogadishu?s airport, killing three soldiers and a civilian contractor.

The AU force, deployed since 2007, counts some 22,000 troops and has pushed the Shabaab out of the capital, but the Islamists still hold large swathes of territory in the south and center of the country.

Recent rebel attacks have targeted key government and security sites in an apparent bid to discredit claims by the authorities and the African Union that they are winning the war.

The United States has no permanently deployed ground force in Somalia but supports the government and sometimes deploys air power or special forces against targets linked to Al-Qaeda.

Five Arrested in Morocco on 'Terror' Charges
[AnNahar] Morocco has indicted five people on charges of plotting "terrorist acts" and belonging to an illegal religious group, the official MAP news agency said on Monday.

The suspects were referred to the prosecutor who leveled the charges against them ahead of their trial, it said without adding when the first hearing will be held.

The men, whose names were not given, were indicted on charges of "forming a criminal gang aimed at carrying out terrorist acts" as well as membership of "an illegal religious group" and aggression.

The news agency did not say what "terrorist acts" were allegedly planned by the suspects.

However,
there is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened...
last week the interior ministry announced their arrest, calling them self-styled religious vice squad police who wanted to impose their view of "virtue" on others.
Nowadays this is the local execution of Broken Windows policing, stopping small crimes to prevent bigger ones.
The suspects are believed to have carried out several knife attacks in the northern city of Tangiers, the ministry said.

In September, authorities tossed in the slammer
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
another group of suspects in Tangiers, a conservative town, accusing them of setting up a self-declared "inquisitors religious police" force and attacking a man who drank alcohol.

Cameroon Bombs Boko Haram Positions in North
Cameroon has sent warplanes into action against Nigerian Boko Haram fighters for the first time, after the large force of jihadists crossed the border and seized a military camp, the government said.

President Paul Biya personally ordered Sunday's air strike, which forced the insurgents to flee the camp at Assighasia, Communications Minister Issa Tchiroma Bakary said in a statement late Sunday.

"Fighter planes went into action for the first time since the start of the conflict" on the Cameroonian side of the frontier, after several months of deadly cross-border Boko Haram raids, Bakary added.

"After two strikes and heavy fire... the assailants fled the Assighasia camp... losing several fighters," he said.

Military operations were still under way, he added, saying that "the toll from combat will be released once the operational evaluation is complete".

The extremists of Boko Haram, which roughly means "Western education is forbidden", have made frequent raids into neighboring Cameroon since they began their insurgency in northern Nigeria in 2009.

41 Militants Killed in Wave of Attacks in Cameroon
Cameroon's army killed at least 41 Islamist militants as it fought off a wave of attacks along its border with Nigeria over the weekend in an escalation in the conflict, the government said.

The coordinated assaults on five towns and villages showed a change in tactics by Nigerian Boko Haram fighters, who have focused on hit-and-run raids on individual settlements in the past, Information Minister Issa Tchiroma added.

Boko Haram's campaign to carve out an Islamist caliphate has spread from its stronghold in northeast Nigeria to neighboring Cameroon, raising fears for an already unstable region also threatened by Islamist militants in the Sahel.

Cameroon has sent thousands of soldiers to its Far North region to fight off the militants and said it launched air attacks on the movement for the first time on Sunday.

'Qaida' Ambush on Yemeni General Kills Two Soldiers
[AnNahar] Two Yemeni soldiers were killed and 11 maimed Monday when al-Qaeda turbans ambushed a regional army chief in southeastern Hadramawt province, a military official said.

"Members of al-Qaeda" set an ambush for the convoy of General Abdulrahman al-Hulaili, the head of the First Military Region, the official told Agence La Belle France-Presse.

They detonated explosives planted on the roadside and opened fire as the convoy passed, but Hulaili escaped unscathed, the official added.

In central Baida city, two gunnies on a cycle of violence rubbed out intelligence officer Nasser al-Wahishi, a local authority official said, adding that the assailants were suspected of belonging to al-Qaeda.

The attacks come a day after a similar bombing targeted the commander of the 31st Armoured Battalion, General Farej al-Atiqi, in the southern city of Aden.

Atiqi escaped unharmed but his driver was killed and two bodyguards were maimed.

Security forces are often the targets of attacks blamed on Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula
...the latest incarnation of various Qaeda and Qaeda-allied groups, including the now-defunct Aden-Abyan Islamic Army that boomed the USS Cole in 2000...
, which the United States regards as the deadliest branch of the global holy warrior network.

AQAP has exploited the weakened central authority in Yemen since the 2012 departure of president President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...
following a year-long popular uprising.

The group's presence is strongest in the south and southeast of the impoverished country, but AQAP has also launched attacks in the capital itself.

In other unrest, a bomb planted in the car of Ali al-Sharif, a prominent Shiite Huthi chief in Marib, east of Sanaa, killed his son and a bodyguard, a local official said.

Yemen has been rocked by instability since the Shiite fighters, who are also known as Ansarullah, seized control of Sanaa on September 21.

The Huthis have since expanded their presence in central and western Yemen, but have met fierce resistance from Sunni tribes and al-Qaeda.

Terrorist magazine praises siege gunman
[DAILYMAIL.CO.UK] A propaganda magazine of the Islamic State extremist group has praised gunman Man Haron Monis for taking 18 hostages in a Sydney cafe.

It's also reissued a call for lone wolf attacks in Australia and taunted Western helplessness in the face of the threat.

Monis and two of his hostages, Tori Johnson and Katrina Dawson, were killed in the violent conclusion to the siege in the early hours of December 16.

In the foreword to its sixth edition, the IS magazine Dabiq described Monis as a brother and said he was fighting in the path of Allah.

He did so "by acting alone and striking the kuffar (non-believers) where it would hurt them most - in their own lands and on the very streets that they presumptively walk in safety," the magazine states.

"It didn't take much; he got hold of a gun and stormed a cafe taking everyone inside hostage.

"Yet in doing so, he prompted mass panic, brought terror to the entire nation ... The blessings in his efforts were apparent from the very outset."

At the start of the siege, a black flag with Arabic writing was visible in a window of the Lindt cafe in Sydney's Martin Place.

Dabiq declared this was "a testament to his sincerity".

It said Monis joined other Muslims who answered a jihadist call "to strike those waging war against the Islamic State wherever they may be".

In October, Dabiq published calls for lone wolf attacks across western nations, especially US, UK, France, Australia and Germany.

It repeated that statement in the latest edition.

"There will be others who follow the examples set by Man Haron Monis and Numan Haider in Australia," it said.

Melbourne teenager Haider was shot dead after stabbing two police officers.

"All that the West will be able to do is to anxiously await the next round of slaughter and then issue the same tired, cliche statements in condemnation of it when it occurs."

Fire at Sweden Mosque for Second Time
A fire broke out at a mosque in Sweden early on Monday in what appeared to be the second arson attack in less than a week on a place of Muslim worship, officials said.

No-one was reported hurt in the blaze, which started around 3 am at a mosque in the southern town of Eslov, police said in a statement.

The fire was quickly put out and caused only minor damage, it said.

While police said the cause was under investigation, a fire department spokesman said it appeared to be an act of arson.

"There is no possible natural explanation for this type of fire to break out" by itself, Gustaf Sandell told public radio.

The blaze comes days after an arsonist set fire to a mosque in central Sweden on Christmas Day, injuring five people.

Sweden, known for tolerance and refugee-friendly policies, saw an extreme right party, the Sweden Democrats, become the third-largest force in parliament in legislative elections in September.

In early December, the party brought down the government after less than three months by refusing to back its budget proposal in parliament.

On Saturday the government announced it had reached a deal with the opposition that will enable it to remain in power and to avert the Nordic country's first snap elections in more than half a century, but the far right has threatened to hold a no-confidence vote.

[DAWN] TAXILA: The principal of a private school on Thursday received a threatening text message on her mobile phone warning her that a bomb had been planted in the school which would go off at 9am.

She immediately called the police who cordoned off the school building, diverted traffic and vacated adjacent shops and buildings and called bomb disposal squad (BDS). The school is located on GT road in Wah Saddar police area.

Bomb disposal squad after combing the school building with metal detectors and sniffer dogs cleared the building.

“We have combed the whole building and every class and found nothing as it was just hoax,” said an official of the BDS while talking to this reporter.

“The aim of the threatening text message was to create panic and we are tracing the the sender of text message,” said an investigating officer while talking to this reporter.

Uzair Baloch caught in Dubai
[DAWN] Uzair Baloch, an alleged leader of one of the gangs operating in crime-infested Lyari, was arrested in Dubai by the Interpol on Monday while he was crossing into the United Arab Emirates from Oman by road, police authorities here confirmed.

Television channels broke the news regarding arrest of Uzair Baloch during the first half of the day, but with sketchy details and unconfirmed reports. Later, in the evening police officials seconded the arrest report, citing family sources of the alleged gang leader. But they added that they were still in touch with the federal government and the authorities concerned for custody of Baloch.

“We have reports that he has been arrested by Interpol,” DIG south Barrister Abdul Khaliq Sheikh told Dawn. “Although we have not received any confirmation from any official forum, his [Uzair Baloch’s] family has confirmed his arrest in Dubai. We are pursuing the issue with the interior ministry and FIA for further process and his custody.”

Once known for his loyalty to the Pakistan Peoples and close contacts with the party’s leaders and senior members in the Sindh cabinet, eg former home minister Dr. Zulfiqar Mirza, Uzair Baloch took over as leader of Peoples Amn Committee in Aug 2009 when the notorious Abdul Rahman Baloch alias Rahman Dakait was killed in an encounter more than a year after the PPP government came to power. Though the committee is presented as community group by its leaders, it is blamed for its criminal activities which included killings, extortion and drugs business both by police and rival parties of the PPP.

His relations with the PPP started souring after April 2012 when the police launched ‘Lyari operation’. The two-week siege came to an end without any major arrest, but left a number of people, including policemen, dead.

IHC orders release of Lakhvi
[DAWN] The Islamabad High Court on Monday ordered the conditional release of Zakiur Rahman Lakhvi, the alleged mastermind of the Mumbai attacks.

The court suspended his detention orders, which were issued by the Islamabad district administration soon after an anti-terrorism court granted him bail on Dec 18.

He is expected to be released sometime on Tuesday.

The decision drew a sharp reaction from India and it summoned Pakistan’s High Commissioner to lodge protest. An Indian foreign ministry official said Delhi wanted “to register our protest over the court order”.

Seven Pakistani suspects have been charged with planning and financing the attacks but the failure to advance their trial has been a major obstacle to better ties between the two countries.

Three Iranian Troops Killed near Pakistan Border
Three Iranian soldiers have been killed close to the Pakistani border in an attack in the southeastern Saravan region, the official Fars news agency reported on Monday.

"Yesterday (Sunday) afternoon, three members of the Revolutionary Guards, including Colonel Akbar Abdollahnejad... were killed by armed rebels," a military official told Fars.

There was no additional information provided on the incident.

In October, three security forces members were killed in an attack blamed on rebels in Saravan.

An Iranian soldier was also killed in a September attack on a border post there.

The area lies in Sistan-Baluchistan province, which has a large Sunni Muslim community in otherwise predominantly Shiite Iran and has been plagued by violence involving Sunni extremists and drug smugglers.

Iran accuses members of the Sunni militant group Jaish-ul Adl (Army of Justice) of carrying out frequent raids.

The group captured five Iranian troops in February, four of whom were released in April. The fifth soldier is presumed dead but his fate remains officially unknown.

Sunni tribes threaten to seek help from Tehran to fight ISIS if Washington does not respond
[IraqiNews.com] On Monday, news report revealed that Sunni tribal leaders threatened the United States to obtain weapons from Iran to fight ISIS since their demands are not yet fulfilled, while criticizing Washington?s duplicity in dealing with the Sunni provinces?asked for US ground forces, arms and money to speed up the operations to liberate their territories?compared to the Kurds.

?Al Jazeera International? said in a report followed by IraqiNews.com, ?The Sunni tribes in Iraq are studying the option of Iranian assistance to get arms and training to fight the ISIS organization in case the United States does not respond to their demands,? explaining that ?The warning came during the meeting of U.S. Senator John Maverick McCain
... the Senator-for-Life from Arizona, former presidential candidate and even more former foot soldier in the Reagan Revolution...
with a number of tribal elders and members of the House of Representatives, representing the provinces of Anbar, Salahuddin, Diyali and the surrounding areas of Baghdad in his brief visit to Baghdad last Friday.?

Al Jazeera said that three Sunni figures attended and presented a list of demands to McCain, asking for U.S. ground troops, weapons and money to speed up the liberalization of areas seized by ISIS. They also demanded granting a greater role to the tribes in the fight against the terrorist organization. It was stated that these Sunni figures made it clear to McCain that they are considering alternatives about the military support to confront ISIS, and Iran was on the top of the list.

The US-Allies have to decide what kind of mutually beneficial compromise including pro-Shia reforms can be realistically achieved + supported.

East Jerusalem brothers indicted for plotting attack
[IsraelTimes] Two brothers from East Jerusalem were indicted Monday for joining Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, and plotting to carry out a terror attack in Jerusalem on behalf of the terror group.

The Jerusalem district attorney filed the indictment against Shaaban bin Ahmad Hamed, 28, and Muhammed bin Ahmad Hamed, 23.

According to the document, the brothers are accused of being members of Hamas, recruiting others to join the terror organization, being in contact with a foreign agent, destroying evidence, and obstructing justice.

The elder brother had a history of terror activity and had served time in prison.

The two were said to receive funding from Hamas to perpetrate the attack in Jerusalem, which was in the preliminary stages of planning.

According to Channel 10, the elder brother joined Hamas while in prison.

Shaaban bin Ahmad Hamed borrowed a book from a fellow inmate during his prison term and discovered among its pages a note offering him the chance to join the terror group.

The East Jerusalem resident agreed, and recruited his brother Muhammed as well.

Several days later, he received another book, with instructions, a disk, and an email address of another Hamas operative.

The recruit contacted the Hamas man and was coordinating efforts to receive funding of up to NIS 100,000 to carry out a terror attack.

The elder brother was placed in durance vile
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
first, the TV report said, at which point the younger brother allegedly destroyed the evidence.

NPA militants gun down officer, soldier and militiaman
Communist militants killed an army officer, a soldier, and a pro-government militiaman in an ambush Monday in Compostela Valley province in the southern Philippines. Officials said the three were traveling by motorcycle when New People's Army rebels attacked them in Candinuyan village in Mabini town.

Eastern Mindanao Command strongly condemned the killings which happened while both sides are supposed to be observing a cease-fire.

Lieutenant Genera Aurelio Baladad, chief of the Eastern Mindanao Command, promised to exert great effort to bring the perpetrators of the attack to justice. He said the soldiers were in civilian clothes, unarmed, and on their way to visit their families when the militants ambushed them.

Baladad said, "We sympathize with the bereaved families of our slain personnel. It is so sad to note that they were killed while on their way to their families who missed them during Christmas as they were tasked to ensure a peaceful yuletide celebration in Candinuyan. We will exert all efforts to bring to justice those responsible for this merciless and cowardly crime."

He said the militants even stripped the dead of their clothes and belongings before fleeing with the victims’ motorcycle.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Come To Kobane And Die For ISIL
[StrategyPage] [I]f ISIL does attack, victory must come quick. If fighting lines form in a town the air attacks have targets and as ISIL learned (and is still learning) at Kobane in Syria, this turns into a slaughter for ISIL men. Thousands have been killed or wounded in Kobane since October and by mid-December the Kurds began pushing ISIL out of Kobane and other areas around the town. ISIL counterattacked, but because the Kurds are better (trained, experienced and led) fighters, and have air support, the ISIL forces have had little success. It appears that ISIL is no longer sending its best fighters to Kobane but instead sending mainly new recruits. These men have, at most, a few weeks training (and indoctrination) and don’t last long against the Kurds. If you are new to ISIL and want to die, come to Kobane.

#3  They apparently have enough 'fodder' to keep the assault up to a certain level. They'll keep the Chechens, Rep Guard and other 'experienced' folks in the rear echelon here and where needed elsewhere.

Understanding that ISIL can't give this one up or they loose face, I'll bet that Kobane is the 'final test' for all newbies. Based on recruitment, the siege could continue for some time.

If they fail and die, no real loss. There'll be more 'replacements' by morning and the ones left alive will get promoted.

Palestinian Held for Transferring Explosives to Ain el-Hilweh
[AnNahar] A Paleostinian man accused of transferring explosives to Sidon's Ain al-Hilweh Paleostinian refugee camp was tossed in the clink
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
in northern Leb on Monday.

?The intelligence department of the General Security arrested a Paleostinian from al-Rifai family in northern Leb,? state-run National News Agency reported.

?He is accused of transferring explosives to the Ein el-Hellhole camp,? the NNA added.

The army and other security agencies have recently arrested dangerous runaways who were planning kabooms inside Leb, the last of which was Mahmoud Abou Abbas, one of the Qaeda-linked Abdullah Azzam Brigades
... Leb's current al-Qaeda affiliate, named after a guy whose car the current head of al-Qaeda had boomed...
leaders.

Abou Abbas has been described as ?another Naim Abbas,? another top leader of the Azzam Brigades who was arrested by the army last February in Beirut's Corniche al-Mazraa.

Abbas was charged with being part of a terrorist cell that prepared and transferred booby-trapped cars from Syria to Leb to blow them up in residential areas, in addition to plotting to commit terrorist acts inside the country.

The Ein el-Hellhole camp is known to shelter scores of Islamist runaways, such as bad boy holy man Ahmed al-Asir
...Leb Salafist holy man with the usual grouch against Shiites. Currently on the run, he seems intent on reigniting the Leb civil war...
and al-Nusra
...the current nom de guerre of al-Qaeda in the Levant, which isn't to be confused with al-Qaeda in Iraq and the Levant...
Front-linked murderous Moslem Shadi al-Mawlawi, who took part in the recent battle against the army in Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
.

By long-standing convention, the Lebanese army does not enter the country's 12 refugee camps, leaving security inside to the Paleostinians themselves.

Car Bomb near Syria Gas Plant Kills 9
[AnNahar] A boom-mobile kaboom near a gas plant in Syria's Homs province on Monday killed nine people including four soldiers, a monitoring group said, updating an earlier toll.

The jihadist Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(IS) group grabbed credit for the attack and said the two bombers were killed.

State news agency SANA confirmed the attack but said that troops had captured the bombers.

"Five employees and four regime troops guarding the Firqlos gas plant were killed in a boom-mobile blast near the facility in the east of Homs province," said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The kaboom also maimed 15 people.

It took place "at the start of the working day", the Britannia-based group added.

SANA, quoting a military source, said "guards captured the two turbans who detonated the pick-up truck at the entrance to the plant while they were trying to flee."

IS said the two men, both Moroccan, had died.

The jihadists have targeted oil and gas facilities in Iraq and Syria as the group seeks funds for its fight to seize territory for a self-proclaimed Islamic "caliphate".

In November, Syrian troops backed by pro-regime gunnies recaptured the Shaer gas field in central Homs province, a week after IS fighters overran parts of the complex.

IS killed some 350 regime troops and loyalist militiamen, as well as gas plant workers, during its attempt to take Shaer.

Elsewhere in Syria, the Observatory said the number of IS members killed fighting Kurdish forces in the flashpoint town of Kobane on Sunday had risen to 18.

Another two IS suicide kaboomers also died, as did 10 members of the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), it said.

The jihadists launched a major offensive in mid-September to try to capture Kobane, and at one point controlled more than half the town, known in Arabic as Ain al-Arab.

But backed by US-lead coalition Arclight airstrikes on IS positions, Kurdish forces have regained control of several neighborhoods.

Coalition aircraft struck IS targets in Kobane on Sunday night, the Observatory said, and a Pentagon statement said 10 strikes hit the area on Monday.

More than 1,000 people are reported to have been killed in the battle for the town, most of them jihadists.
