U.S. Said to Investigate Sheldon Silver, New York Assembly Speaker, Over Pay
[NY Times] Federal authorities are investigating substantial payments made to the State Assembly speaker, Sheldon Silver, by a small law firm that seeks real estate tax reductions for commercial and residential properties in New York City, according to people with knowledge of the matter.

Prosecutors from the United States attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York and agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation have found that the law firm, Goldberg & Iryami, P.C., has paid Mr. Silver the sums over roughly a decade, but that he did not list that income on his annual financial disclosure forms, as required, the people said.

The prosecutors, from the office of the United States attorney, Preet Bharara, and the F.B.I. agents were seeking to determine precisely what Mr. Silver, a Manhattan Democrat, has been doing for the payments, the people said. Spokesmen for the F.B.I. and Mr. Bharara’s office declined to comment.

#1  I'm shocked that a Democrat lawmaker is not entirely on the level with financial matters...

#2  Silver, Koch, Altman, Jacobs, Goldberg, Iryami, Weitz, and Luxenberg.... looks like yet another Amish cabal. Pass the rugelach please, and call your father.

#3  That's quite a racket; jack up real estate taxes and then take bribes from individuals who want their taxes reduced. I think if I was trying to do business in New Yawk I'd want my taxes reduced too but I'd probably just leave the state before paying any bribes.

De Blasio Gets Mixed Reaction At NYPD Graduation Ceremony
[NEWYORK.CBSLOCAL] Mayor Bill de Blasio faced applause, boos and catcalls when he took the stage to address hundreds of new police recruits at a police graduation ceremony.

De Blasio spoke Monday at Madison Square Garden during a tense point in his relationship with the NYPD.

The 884 new police officers sat stoically in their seats when de Blasio was introduced. But some could be heard booing and heckling the mayor in the seats reserved for the cadets’ family and friends. Others cheered and applauded.

“It takes a special kind of person to put their lives on the line for others, to stare down the danger,” he said. “Because that’s what you will do. You will stare down the danger. You will keep the peace.”

He then continued: “You’ll confront all the problems that plague our society — problems that you didn’t create.”

But immediately after the mayor made that remark, someone from the crowd yelled, “You did!” That heckle was met with laughter and some applause from the crowd.

About a dozen or so people in the stands stood with their backs turned to de Blasio. But he continued praising the officers and received polite applause when he finished speaking.

Police Commissioner Bill Bratton, who spoke after de Blasio, acknowledged the unease.

“We live in a very difficult time, at this time, in this country, in this city, in this department,” he told the graduates. “But we will work forward through it. We always do.”

Still, pride resonated throughout Madison Square Garden as the NYPD welcomed its newest members, CBS2’s Hazel Sanchez reported.

“I’m happy because of the prestige of the NYPD and I just want to go out there and do my best to help support the city and help look after the people of New York,” said graduate police officer Chas Briant.

#3  Carter was Navy and I respect his service for our country. He did understand some things, unlike our current WH resident(s).

Most of our 19th and 20th century presidents (I said most) performed some sort of military service or came from strong military families. The rest respected the military until this guy came along.

Then there's that little item that it was a WEDDING. Again, marriage and family have been respected by our previous leaders.

My wife is a generous person and generally will not comment much on the foibles of others, but this particular action by the beloved leader caused a real 'rant', complete with words I've seldom heard her use.

Folks here would be proud.

#5  Switch this to "Republican" and "Gay marriage" and you'd have a shitstorm of major proportions in the mainstream media.

Bias in media - a clear example.

#10  You know, if his staff had their heads out of their a$$es, they would have called to see if they were going to disrupt any planned activities by others, as just plain common courtesy.

But that would violate the "It's all about me" clause of the Narcissist Code.

What a piece of work.

#11  I doubt the planning staff of any President ever thinks about conflicts like this - they just set up the event requested.

#12  To be fair, he called them and apologized.
