Afghan Official Says Insurgents Kill 6 Soldiers
[Ynet] An Afghan army officer says that six soldiers have been killed in the north-western province of Badghis after holy warriors launched several attacks on guard posts.

General Douod Shah Wafa, the commander of the Afghan National Army in the province, says Taliban gunnies used machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades to attack the posts in Bala Murghab district early on Tuesday morning.

In eastern Afghanistan, an official says an American drone killed five holy warriors in Shirzad district in Nangahar province.

Militants Divide Kenya Miners by Religion, Then Begin Killing
[NY Times] The Kenyan miners were marched off in the predawn dark on Tuesday, some barefoot, others shirtless.

The Somali Death Eaters methodically separated the Christian workers from the Moslems and took the Christians to the side of a hill, near a gravel pit. Then they ordered the disbelievers to lie face down.

According to the Kenyan authorities, the Death Eaters killed 36 people, most of them young men. Many were shot in the back of the head, at close range, and some were decapitated. It appeared all the Moslems had been spared.

The killings, which followed a similar sequence on a passenger bus less than two weeks earlier, unnerved the Kenyan public and led to the ouster of Kenya?s top security chiefs.

?Innocent Kenyan lives have been lost, in a most harrowing manner, to these animals,? said Kenya?s president, Uhuru Kenyatta.

But, he said, ?We will not flinch.?

Kenya has been severely hampered by Somali Death Eaters next door, a problem that never seems to go away. It started in the 1960s and became acute in the early 1990s, when Somalia?s government collapsed and hundreds of thousands of refugees, and waves of gunnies called shiftas, fled into Kenya.

Somalia's Shebab Claim Latest Kenya Massacre, Vow More Attacks
[AnNahar] Somalia's Shabaab rebels on Tuesday said they carried out the massacre of 36 quarry workers in northeast Kenya, and vowed to be "uncompromising, relentless and ruthless" in fighting Kenya.

"In another successful operation carried out by the Mujahideen, nearly 40 Kenyan crusaders met their demise after a unit from the Saleh Nabhan brigade raided them in the midnight hours of Monday at Koromei, on the outskirts of Mandera," Shabaab front man Sheikh Ali Mohamud Rage said in a statement to Agence La Belle France Presse.

"This latest attack was part of a series of attacks planned and executed by the Mujahideen as a response to Kenya's occupation of Moslem lands and their ongoing atrocities, such as the recent Arclight airstrikes on Moslems in Somalia which caused the death of innocent Moslems and the destruction of their properties and livestock, as well as the continued suffering of Moslems in Mombasa," the statement said.

"As Kenya persists in its occupation of Moslem lands, kills innocent Moslems, transgresses upon their sanctities and throws them into prisons, we will persist to defend our land and our people from their aggression.

"We are uncompromising in our beliefs, relentless in our pursuit, ruthless against the disbelievers and we will do whatever necessary to defend our Moslem brethren suffering from Kenya's aggression."

Around 20 fighters from the al-Qaeda-affiliated Shabaab rebels attacked a quarry near the northeastern town of Mandera in the early hours of Tuesday morning. After spraying tents where the quarry workers slept with gunfire, the bully boyz then weeded out non-Moslems and shot them in the head.

Some of the victims were also beheaded, police sources and reports said.

The attack comes just over a week after the Shabaab grabbed credit for the execution of 28 people who were grabbed from a bus travelling from Mandera, a border town located between Kenya, Somalia and Æthiopia.

The special-Shabaab
... Somalia's version of the Taliban, functioning as an arm of al-Qaeda...
brigade which has carried out the attacks is named after slain Shabaab commander and Kenyan citizen Saleh Ali Nabhan, killed in 2009 by U.S. special forces for his role as al-Qaeda's chief in east Africa.

Egypt Condemns 188 to Death over Police Deaths
[AnNahar] An Egyptian court condemned 188 people to death Tuesday over a deadly attack on police, as the prosecution said it will appeal the acquittal of ex-president Hosni Mubarak
...The former President-for-Life of Egypt, dumped by popular demand in early 2011...
over protester deaths.

The accused, of whom 143 are behind bars, were found guilty of taking part in an August 14, 2013 attack on a cop shoppe in Kerdassa, a village on the outskirts of Cairo, killing 13 coppers.

The attack took place on the same day security forces violently dismantled two massive pro-Morsi protest camps in Cairo in an operation that led to festivities in which at least 700 bit the dust.

Death sentences in Egypt are subject to approval by the mufti, the country's highest Moslem religious authority. The verdict is to be confirmed or commuted on January 24.

Since the army deposed Morsi last year, at least 1,400 of his supporters have been killed in a crackdown on protests and hundreds sentenced to death in swift trials.

The U.N. human rights
...which are often intentionally defined so widely as to be meaningless...
office said Tuesday that Egypt must rein in its security forces and investigate rights abuses against protesters.

It said it was deeply concerned by "the seriously damaging lack of accountability for human rights violations committed by security forces in the context of demonstrations."

The sentences came as the public prosecutor's office said it will appeal a court decision to drop a murder charge against Mubarak over the deaths of protesters during the 2011 uprising that drove him from power.

"The prosecutor general has decided to appeal," a statement said, after a Cairo court Saturday ordered the dropping of murder and corruption charges against Mubarak, who was forced to resign after three decades in power.

"The ruling was marred by a legal flaw," the statement said, adding that the decision to appeal was "not influenced by disputes among political groups."

Mubarak is serving a three-year sentence in a separate graft case.

Seven of Mubarak's security commanders, including feared ex-interior minister Habib al-Adly, were acquitted Saturday over the deaths of roughly 800 protesters during the 2011 revolt.

The Court of Cassation, the country's highest tribunal, can now either confirm Saturday's ruling or decide to cancel it, in which case it would consider the case itself.

An appeals court had previously overturned a life sentence for Mubarak in 2012 on a technicality, ordering the retrial that saw the charges dropped.

Mubarak's lawyer has said the 86-year-old could now see an early release from the military hospital where he is being held. He has already served two-thirds of his sentence if time held in preliminary detention since his arrest in 2011 is taken into account.

Migrant Workers among 7 Dead in Libya Air Raid
[AnNahar] Seven people were killed, including five African migrant workers, as pro-government forces carried out air strikes Tuesday on the coastal city of Zuara in western Libya, a local official said.

"There were three raids today (Tuesday) ... targeting a food depot, a chemical goods factory and a small port," the official told Agence La Belle France-Presse, asking not to be named.

He said seven people were killed, including five African workers, and 25 maimed, a casualty toll which could not immediately be confirmed.

While held prisoner, he and his fellow officers formed a group hoping to overthrow Qadaffy. He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. He said the warplane that launched the raids had taken off from an air base in al-Woutia, also in western Libya, that is controlled by factions loyal to Haftar.

.

The strongman has been battling Islamist militias who took control of the country's biggest cities this summer after their defeat in elections.

Forces loyal to Haftar and Prime Minister Abdullah al-Thani are fighting for control of Benghazi and have also launched an offensive west of the capital.

"For Tripoli we are only at the beginning," Haftar told the Italian daily Corriere della Sera. "I have given myself three months, but maybe we will need less."

Three Killed in Suspected Rebel Attack in East DR Congo
[AnNahar] Three people were killed in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo
...formerly the Congo Free State, Belgian Congo, Zaire, and who knows what else, not to be confused with the Brazzaville Congo aka Republic of Congo, which is much smaller and much more (for Africa) stable. DRC gave the world Patrice Lumumba and Joseph Mobutu, followed by years of tedious civil war. Its principle industry seems to be the production of corpses. With a population of about 74 million it has lots of raw material...
in a machete attack blamed on rebels from neighboring Uganda, local authorities said Tuesday.

The attack, which was repelled by the army, took place in the restive North Kivu province, where rebels from the Allied Democratic Forces and National Army for the Liberation of Uganda (ADF-NALU) have been accused of hacking scores of civilians to death since October.

The rebels launched their attack on the village of Eringeti, around 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the city of Beni, late Monday, tribal elder Desire Boroso told Agence La Belle France Presse.

"They killed three people -- two women and a child - with a machete, and seriously injured three others," Boroso said by telephone.

A local security source confirmed the corpse count.

The mainly Moslem ADF-NALU rebels have been hiding in the mountains that straddle the border between DRC and Uganda since being driven out of their homeland in 1995.

The Congolese army and U.N. forces launched an offensive in January to try flush them out of the region.

77 Dead In Attacks On Nigerian Cities
[IsraelTimes] At least 77 people died in attacks by suspected Islamic forces of Evil who struck two northeast Nigeria
... a particularly crimson stretch of Islam's bloody border...
n state capitals, health workers said Tuesday.

The deaths from Monday's attacks bring the toll to at least 247 people reported killed in a week of increasing violence from an Islamic uprising in the northeast of Africa's biggest oil producer.

Double suicide kabooms at a bustling market in Maiduguri, capital of Borno state, killed at least 16 people, according to workers at two hospitals who spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to news hounds. The bodies included those of the two young women who set off the kabooms.

Two other young women blew themselves up at the same market last week, killing at least 70 people.

holy warrior group were brought to the hospital, according to a morgue worker, who also insisted on anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press.

The casualties indicate heavy fighting after scores of Death Eaters invaded the town before dawn Monday and fought for several hours. The heavy fighting prevented the attackers from taking the governor's office, which includes a military armory, said residents.

Several buildings were bombed and destroyed, including a rapid-response police base and several structures at the university and the hospital residential compound, said police.

Two doctors were killed and three kidnapped in the attack on their residential compound, reported the Hospital Management Board.

Yobe Gov. Ibrahim Gaidam praised security forces for doing "a great job," in a statement issued Tuesday by his office.

The Death Eaters were driven off in part by strafing and bombing by an Air Force fighter jet and a helicopter gunship, according to the Defense Ministry headquarters and witnesses.

Gaidam declared a 24-hour curfew in Damaturu as soldiers combed the town for any remaining holy warriors. Damaturu is about 135 kilometers (85 miles) west of Maiduguri.

Thousands of people have been killed and 1.6 million driven from their homes in the 5-year-old insurgency by Boko Haram, the West African's nation's homegrown Islamic holy warrior group that is holding a couple dozen cities and towns along Nigeria's northeast border where it has declared an Islamic caliphate.

Arabia
Saudi Death Sentence over Shooting in Shiite Town
[AnNahar] A Saudi court on Tuesday sentenced to death a man who opened fire numerous times on police in a Shiite-dominated community in the country's east, official media said.

It is the latest of several death sentences which activists say have been handed down since 2011 when demonstrations began among the minority Shiites.

A court in the capital Riyadh convicted the accused of firing five rounds from a pistol at a traffic police car on duty in the village of Awamiya, the Saudi Press Agency said.

He also fired on other officers who tried to stop him, it said.

In addition to weapons-related crimes the court found him guilty of offenses including threatening and intending to communicate with groups wanting to cause "devastation," SPA said.

"The court decided to pass the death sentence on the defendant for the crimes that he committed," it said.

SPA did not name the accused or say when the crimes occurred.

Awamiya, just west of Dammam city, has been a focus for festivities between security forces and Shiite protesters.

In October protesters marched there in opposition to death sentences handed to Shiite religious leader Nimr al-Nimr and others, an activist said at the time.

Nimr was a driving force behind demonstrations against the Sunni authorities that erupted in 2011 in the oil-rich east, alongside a Shiite-led protest movement in neighboring Bahrain.

Pakistan Air Strikes and Ground Fire Kill 24 Militants
[AnNahar] The Pakistain military said Tuesday it had killed at least 24 holy warriors in air strikes and ground fighting in northwestern tribal areas bordering Afghanistan, as part of ongoing offensives in the region.

A ruling party politician in the southwestern province of Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
meanwhile narrowly escaped with his life when a roadside kaboom detonated outside his home as he left the building.

Air strikes took place in the restive North Wazoo tribal district, where the army launched a major operation in June targeting Taliban and Haqqani network bully boys.

The strikes came as ground troops shot it out with holy warriors in Khyber agency, where Taliban and Lashkar-e-Islam
...a group of Islamic bandidos infesting Khyber Agency. It's headed by a former bus driver....
fighters are based.

"In early morning precise aerial strikes in North Waziristan Agency today 17 bad boyz were potted including some foreigners," a security bigshot told Agence La Belle France Presse.

Local intelligence officials confirmed the air strikes and said they took place near Miranshah
... headquarters of al-Qaeda in Pakistain and likely location of Ayman al-Zawahiri. The Haqqani network has established a ministate in centered on the town with courts, tax offices and lots of madrassas...
, the main town of North Waziristan.

"There are five Uzbek and two Haqqani network holy warriors among those who have been killed in the air strikes," an intelligence official told AFP.

Separately in Khyber's Tirah valley, a stronghold of Talibs, seven holy warriors were killed during a shootout that erupted after up to 60 holy warriors stormed a security check point.

"Seven bad boyz were potted in an exchange of fire with security forces in Tirah in Khyber Agency. Reportedly about 50-60 turbans raided a check post in Tirah," a second security official told AFP.

It was not possible to verify the number of casualties or their identity as the media are banned from visiting the area.

Rights groups say the military often exaggerates the number of dead and civilians are often killed too.

The North Waziristan operation began in mid-June, when jets and artillery began targeting rebel strongholds before ground forces moved in.

The army says it has killed more than 1,100 holy warriors and lost more than 100 soldiers since the start of the operation.

An AFP tally based on regular updates from the military puts the bully boy corpse count at more than 1,500, with 125 soldiers killed.

Also Tuesday, Sardar Raza Muhammad Barrech, a member of southwestern Balochistan's provincial parliament, narrowly escaped a roadside kaboom near his home in Quetta that destroyed his car, senior police official Abdul Razzaq Cheema told AFP.

Barrech's party, the Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party, is part of the ruling coalition in the province and stands against Talibs.

Provincial home minister Sarfraz Bugti said Barrech was the target of the bombing and security would be beefed up for members of cabinet.

Nobody immediately claimed the responsibility for the attack.

Balochistan, Pakistain's largest but least developed and most sparsely populated province, is racked by Islamist bully boys, banditry, a separatist revolt and sectarian violence between Sunnis and Shiites.

U.S., Iraqis Helping to Train Sunni Fighters against IS
[AnNahar] U.S. forces and their Iraqi counterparts have trained about 2,000 Sunni fighters in Iraq as part of efforts to defeat the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
bad boy group, a senior U.S. official said Tuesday.

Iraq's Shiite-led government, trying to reverse the marginalization of Sunnis, is seeking to form a "bridging entity" where Sunnis rustics defend their provinces before they are brought into an Iraqi national force, the State Department official told news hounds on condition of anonymity.

The official disclosed the information as U.S. Secretary of State John F. I was in Vietnam, you know Kerry
Former Senator-for-Life from Massachussetts, self-defined war hero, speaker of French, owner of a lucky hat, conqueror of Cambodia, and current Secretary of State...
prepared Wednesday to host talks in Brussels with foreign ministers from scores of countries which are trying to help defeat the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

The official said the training was occurring at al-Asad air base in Anbar province and elsewhere.

Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, a Shiite whose more inclusive government was formed in September, "is committed ultimately to bringing the Sunnis into the mainstream," the official said.

IS proclaimed a caliphate in Syria and Iraq in June after making dramatic advances across a swathe of Iraq, partly as a result of appealing to a marginalized Sunni population.

The members of Iraq's government "are working to empower Sunni fighters. They are already graduating Sunni fighters out in Al Asad in the Anbar province," the official said.

Citing figures from Abadi, he said some 2,000 fighters had graduated from al-Asad and elsewhere and they will eventually form a national guard.

He confirmed the U.S. forces, along with their Iraqi counterparts, were training the Sunnis from tribes in Anbar province, while the Iraqi troops were providing them with equipment.

The government is also aiming to form Shiite national guards in Shiite areas as well as mixed forces in areas where both sects live, he added.

Ahead of building up a national force that defends Iraq's territory, "it recognizes there needs to be a middle tier that can respond to terrorism and criminality at the provincial level," he said.

"That is the concept behind the national guard," he said.

The official said foreign ministers from European, Arab and other states that are part of the 60-member coalition against IS will discuss strategy Wednesday at their first ministerial meeting.

Besides discussing the military aspect, they will discuss how to stem the flow of thousands of imported muscle, legitimize the IS "brand," disrupt IS finances, and provide humanitarian aid to people affected by the violence, the official said.

Syria War Death Toll Said To Top 200,000
[IsraelTimes] Syria's civil war has killed more than 200,000 people in less than four years, a monitoring group told AFP on Tuesday, adding that most were fighters from the two sides.

"We have documented the killing of 202,354 people since March 2011," Syrian Observatory for Human Rights director Rami Abdul Rahman said, adding that more than 130,000 of them were combatants.

"Of the total, 63,074 of the killed were civilians, including 10,377 children," said Abdul Rahman.

"Among the anti-regime fighters, 37,324 were Syrian rebels, while 22,624 were non-Syrian jihadists," he added.

"On the regime side, there were 44,237 soldiers, 28,974 members of the (paramilitary) National Defense Force, 624 members of (Leb's Shiite) Hezbollah, and 2,388 pro-regime Shiite fighters from beyond Syria and Leb," Abdul Rahman said.

Another 3,011 were unidentified, he added.

Abdul Rahman said the toll "is probably much higher than 200,000, but certain areas under regime and (jihadist) Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group control are impossible to work in freely."

He also said some 300,000 people are being held in Syria's infamous jails, including 20,000 who have gone missing entirely.

Thousands of other people -- combatants and civilians -- have also been taken hostage by IS and other factions active in Syria.

Abdul Rahman blamed the international failure to refer Syria to the International Criminal Court
... where Milosevich died of old age before being convicted ...
for the constant bloodletting.
That's adorable.
"By failing to take the killers to court, the international community gives them the implicit go-ahead to keep on killing," he told AFP.

There have been several attempts to refer Syria to the ICC, but Russian and Chinese vetoes at the Security Council have blocked them.

Reports: Army Detains Wife of al-Baghdadi, Family of Nusra Official
[AnNahar] The Army Intelligence has reportedly detained a wife of Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. Front official who has links to the August abduction of several Lebanese troops and coppers from the town of Arsal.
Or possibly two al Baghdadi wives and associated offspring, and the al Nusra chippie. Fog o' journalism, or something.
According to As Safir newspaper published on Tuesday, the Army Intelligence in cooperation with foreign intelligence agencies detained one of al-Baghdadi's wives at a border crossing.
That'd be the first wife. Note the details.
She was reportedly using fake identification papers and accompanied by one of her sons.

The security agencies transported her to the defense ministry's headquarters in Yarze for further investigations.

"Military intelligence detained one of his wives, who was traveling with their son, near (Lebanese northeastern border town) Arsal 10 days ago," a security source told Agence La Belle France Presse.

A military source confirmed the arrest and said the woman was a Syrian national, and her son was around eight years old.
Syrian, son, Arsal, Yarze, ten days ago.
However,
denial ain't just a river in Egypt...
several TV networks reported Tuesday evening that the wife and her daughter were tossed in the calaboose
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
at the army's al-Madfoun checkpoint in the northern district of Batroun "after she raised suspicions."

The wife was identified as Iraqi national Saja Hamid al-Dulaimi. She was included in the swap deal of the Maaloula nuns.

Media reports said Dulaimi was residing in the northern Dinniyeh district and moving between Dinniyeh, Chtaura and Arsal.
Whereas #2 is Iraqi, has a name, a daughter, was picked up at al Madfoun, and stashing place is unnamed.
It is unclear how many wives the IS leader has.

The Islamic State group released in November a defiant audio recording it said was of chief al-Baghdadi, after air strikes on jihadist leaders in Iraq sparked rumors he had been maimed or killed.

IS spearheaded a Death Eater offensive in June that overran Iraq's second city djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
and then swept through much of the country's Sunni Arab heartland, adding chunks of a second country to territory it already held in Syria.

It has carried out atrocities in both countries.

Separately, state-run National News Agency said the Army Intelligence "arrested the wife of al-Nusra
...formally Jabhat an-Nusrah li-Ahli sh-Sham (Support Front for the People of the Levant), also known as al-Qaeda in the Levant. They aim to establish a pan-Arab caliphate. Not the same one as the Islamic State, though .. ...
Front official Anas Sharkas, aka Abu Ali al-Shishani, along with her brother Rakan in the Zgharta area of Hilan" in northern Leb.

MTV said Sharkas' father had been arrested several days ago in Leb as LBCI TV said the Death Eater's name was mentioned in the confessions of detained myrmidon leader Imad Jomaa.

LBCI noted that Sharkas "has links to the case of the captive servicemen."

Jomaa's early August arrest in Arsal sparked deadly festivities with the Lebanese army, during which 20 troops and 16 non-combatants were killed.

The turbans also kidnapped 35 troops and coppers before they eventually released seven and executed three.
Rooters adds:
Baghdadi has three wives, two Iraqis and one Syrian, according to tribal sources in Iraq.
Update from An Nahar at 10:30 a.m. ET:
An Iraqi official denied on Wednesday that a woman detained in Lebanon is a wife of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of the Islamic State group.

The denial comes a day after Lebanese officials told media outlets that the authorities are holding a woman believed to be al-Baghdadi's wife.

They said she was detained for traveling with a fake ID.

The reports said the army arrested her more than 10 days ago at a checkpoint at al-Madfoun Bridge in the North. The driver of the car and her 4-year-old daughter and two younger boys were also arrested.

The army has not issued a communique to confirm the arrests.

Iraq's Interior Ministry spokesman Saad Maan Ibrahim told The Associated Press that the woman is Saja Hamid al-Dulaimi, an Iraqi national who traveled to Syria before arriving in Lebanon, and the sister of Omar al-Dulaimi, who is held in Iraq as a terror suspect.

He added al-Baghdadi has two wives but neither is named Saja al-Dulaimi.
Of course, this says nothing about the Syrian woman picked up in Arsal. Nor about the Al Nusra chippie. Let us compose ourselves to await further clarifications, dear Reader.

Update at 1:15 p.m. ET from An Nahar, a.k.a. "the local rag": "We got SCIENCE!"
Lebanese judicial and military sources insisted Wednesday that a woman detained in Lebanon is a wife of Islamic State chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, as Iraq denied the allegations.

“DNA tests have confirmed that the Iraqi woman detained in Lebanon, Saja al-Dulaimi, is a wife of al-Baghdadi,” Turkey's Anatolia news agency quoted a Lebanese judicial source as saying.

“The DNA results of the three children who were accompanying al-Dulaimi turned out to be compatible with al-Baghdadi's DNA samples that were sent by Iraq” to the Lebanese authorities, the source added.

The source also revealed that the children's DNA results matched those of al-Dulaimi.

Meanwhile, An Nahar newspaper reported Wednesday that Lebanese investigators have obtained several pieces of evidence that prove that al-Dulaimi is al-Baghdadi's divorcee.

“Her DNA results and those of her daughter Hajar matched al-Baghdadi's DNA samples that were provided by a Western source,” An Nahar added.

“There is also another material evidence that is being kept under wraps pending further investigations and it has to do with a document that was found in her possession,” the newspaper said.

The interrogation of the woman is being supervised by Lebanon's military prosecutor, according to The Associated Press.

A senior Lebanese military official insisted in remarks to the AP that the woman said she was al-Baghdadi's wife during her interrogation.

The official declined to provide more details about the investigation. He said authorities have also detained, separately, the wife of senior Nusra Front leader Anas Sharkas, who is also known as Abu Ali al-Shishani.

The official refused to give further details about the Syrian woman, beyond saying her first name is Alaa.

US-Led Coalition Conducts 55 Air Strikes Against Targets In Syria – Iraq
[IraqiNews.com] The US has led 55 air strikes against Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(Isis) forces of Evil in Iraq and Syria since Friday, according to Central Command.

In a statement on Monday, Centcom said there were 27 air strikes against Isis in Syria and 28 strikes in Iraq, hitting a wide variety of targets including Isis buildings, vehicles, tanks and fighting units.

One of the strikes in Syria hit the al-Qaeda-affiliated Khorasan Group, Central Command said.

The Department of Defense and the State Department, meanwhile, appeared to differ over the idea of creating a buffer zone along the Syria-Turkish border, after a media report cited it as a possible concession to Turkey in return for the use of bases to launch air strikes against Isis.

The Wall Street Journal, citing unnamed US and Turkish officials, reported that an agreement could include a safe zone along part of the Syrian border to protect refugees and certain opposition forces that would also "be off-limits" to aircraft from the government of Syrian president Bashir al-Assad. Ankara has long sought such a no-fly zone.

"We are in discussions with the Turks. Right now, we don't believe a buffer zone is the best way to relieve the humanitarian crisis there in northern Syria," Colonel Steve Warren, a Pentagon front man, told news hounds. "But they are close allies, partners and friends, and we are in discussions with them about the way forward."

State spokeswoman Jen Psaki
...a valley girl who woke up one morning and found she was spokeswoman for the U.S. Department of State...
later said the US was actively discussing a range of proposals with Turkey over border security with Syria, including a possible no-fly zone or safe area, though officials were not ready to implement a specific plan.

Psaki said there were still differences with Ankara over how to secure the border with Syria.

"There has been an ongoing discussions about a range of proposals that Turkey has put forward, and they have taken many forms ... but we continue to have differences and haven't made a decision about a specific course of implementation," Psaki told news hounds.

Assad is using the US-led air strikes as cover for his own air campaign against Syrian rebels, hitting the Isis stronghold of Raqqa in retaliation for the group's killing of Syrian soldiers.
