Yemen: Now it can be told - US officers killed gunmen in Sana confrontation
WASHINGTON -- A United States Special Operations commando and a Central Intelligence Agency officer in Yemen shot and killed two armed Yemeni civilians who tried to kidnap them while the Americans were in a barbershop in the country's capital two weeks ago, American officials said on Friday.

The two Americans, attached to the United States Embassy, were whisked out of the volatile Middle East nation within a few days of the shooting, with the blessing of the Yemeni government, American officials said.

Exactly what the two Americans were doing at the time of the shooting on April 24 is unclear. Some American officials said they were merely getting a haircut in a barbershop on Hadda Street in Sana, in an upscale district frequently visited by foreigners, playing down any suggestions that they were engaged in a clandestine operation.

Late Friday, both the Pentagon and C.I.A. declined to comment on the shooting, and referred all questions to the State Department.

"We can confirm that, last month, two U.S. Embassy officers in Yemen fired their weapons after being confronted by armed individuals in an attempted kidnapping at a small commercial business in Sana," a State Department spokeswoman, Marie Harf, said in an email response to questions from The New York Times. "Two of the armed individuals were killed. The Embassy officers are no longer in Yemen." A senior American official said one individual involved in the shooting was a lieutenant colonel with the elite Joint Special Operations Command and the other was a C.I.A. officer.

In the Yemeni news media, the involvement of American commandos in the shooting has not been disclosed. The day after the shooting, the Yemeni Defense Ministry's website, 26sep.net, reported that a foreigner living in Yemen had shot dead two gunmen who tried to abduct him.

"Two armed men tried to kidnap a foreign citizen as he was leaving a barber in Hadda Street in Sana," the website said. "But he was able to resist and shot them with a revolver he had in his possession," the website said, citing security sources.

[Egypt Independent] Clashes erupted on Friday between supporters of the Moslem Brüderbund and the security forces in Al-Raml and Montaza districts of Alexandria after they marched to protest the upcoming presidential elections.

Alexandria Police Director Nasser al-Abd said in a press statement on Friday that security forces fired tear gas canisters to disperse the protesters and chased them in the side streets.

State of Emergency in Unrest-Hit Tunisian Desert Town
[An Nahar] The Tunisian president has declared a state of emergency in Douz, a southern desert town swept by days of festivities between rival tribes, his office said.

A statement late Thursday said an overnight curfew would remain in force until May 22 because of violence that broke out in the town.

Several people were maimed in the unrest, which saw members of the two groups firing birdshot and hurling rocks and sticks at each other during festivities this week over a land dispute, interior ministry front man Mohammed Ali Aroui told AFP.

He was unable to give details on the victims of the violence, but said calm had returned on Friday.

"Following the dangerous deterioration in the security situation... President Moncef Marzouki decided to declare a state of emergency in the South Douz region on Thursday, May 8 until Thursday, May 22," his office said in a statement.

The interior ministry said a curfew had been imposed from 10:00 pm (2100 GMT) to 5:00 am, in the town, around 400 kilometers (250 miles) south of Tunis.

A similar curfew was imposed three years ago after festivities erupted between youths in Douz, which lies on the edge of the Tunisian Sahara.

US Marines Carry Out First Arrests Of Two Boko Haram Members In Benue State
Note: Salt liberally, as this was linked on a Facebook friend's page, and not yet confirmed elsewhere. But I do hope it's true, and the sign of things to come.
[NigerianWatch] US Marines currently in Nigeria to help the government combat Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
bully boyz have made their first arrests taking two male suspects into custody after they were found in possession of arms and ammunition during a targeted search.

Over the last week, US Marines have arrived in Nigeria to help with the fight against terrorism after Boko Haram took their war of terror to another level by abducting 234 pupils from Government Girls Secondary School Chibok in Borno State.

Acknowledging that the matter was getting beyond its control, the Nigerian government swallowed its pride and accepted outside help. With the abduction coming at a time when Nigeria is hosting World Economic Forum on Africa and inbetween two horrific kabooms in Abuja, there has been a lot of international offer of support. La Belle France, the UK, the US and China have all offered differing degrees of support in the form of intelligence, training and military assistance.

Since Wednesday, US troops have arrived in Nigeria where they are providing security for the WEF summit on Africa. It is expected that the Marines will also join Nigerian soldiers in pursuing Boko Haram into the Sambisa Forest in Borno State where they are believed to have spirited the kidnapped girls to.

According to Major General Chris Olukolade, Nigeria's director of defence information, two suspected Boko Haram members were locked away
You have the right to remain silent...
at Anyibe in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State. He added that the duo, made up of a teenager and an elderly man, were arrested during a cordon-and-search operation and found to be in possession of firearms.

Weapons found in their possession included two rifles, three locally fabricated pistols and 61 rounds of special ammunition. Apparently, the arms were found in the possession of the teenager he is currently undergoing interrogation in jug.

US marines are highly specialised soldiers who have been deployed effectively in areas affected by serious conflict and terrorism such as Afghanistan and Iraq. It is not yet clear how many Marines will be deployed to Nigeria as part of the current operation or if they will establish a base in Borno State.

Turbans attack presidential palace in mounting Yemen turmoil
[EURONEWS] Suspected al Qaeda-linked gunnies attacked Yemen's presidential palace on Friday and tried to kill the defence minister in his car, selecting high profile targets in apparent reprisal for the army's biggest push against forces of Evil in nearly two years.

Four soldiers were killed in a shootout of up to an hour that broke out when forces of Evil attacked the main gate of the palace in the capital Sanaa, a security source said.

Sanaa was in lockdown after the shootout, with checkpoints set up at all the main entrances into the capital.

There was no immediate reaction from any senior Yemeni officials on the attack. State news agency Saba published a brief statement saying three security personnel were killed when a "terrorist group" attacked their patrol vehicle.

An kaboom was later heard near a building used by the government's intelligence services in another district of the city, residents told Rooters. There was no immediate word on the cause of the blast.

In the south, Defence Minister Muhammad Nasir Ahmad escaped an liquidation bid by suspected al Qaeda gunnies who attacked a his motorcade in the province of Shabwa.

The defence ministry's website later said the shots heard near Ahmad's convoy was celebratory gunfire.

Saudi, Dagestani Jihadists Killed in Yemen, Two Captured
[An Nahar] Yemeni forces have killed two foreign al-Qaeda gunnies -- a Saudi and a Dagestan
...a formerly inoffensive Caucasus republic currently bedevilled by low-level Islamic insurgency, occasional outbreaks of separatism, ethnic tensions and terrorism, primarily due to its proximity to Chechnya. There are several dozen ethnic groups, most of which speak either Caucasian, Turkic, or Iranian languages. Largest among these ethnic groups are the Avar, Dargin, Kumyk, Lezgin, and Laks. While Russers form less than five percent of the population, Russian remains the primary official language and the lingua franca...
i -- and captured two French citizens of Tunisian origin also belonging to the group, state media said Friday.

State news agency Saba, quoting a military source, named one of the jihadists as Timur al-Dagestani, and said he was an explosives expert from Russia's Dagestan.

The second death was reported on the website of the defense ministry, identifying the man as the "terrorist" Turki Abdelrahman of Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
, also known as Abu Wahib.

Both were killed in the southern Shabwa province, where the army has pressed an offensive against strongholds of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) since April 26, the reports said.

It was not clear when they were killed.

Saba said the suspected French jihadists were jugged
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
on Thursday as they were trying to flee the country from an airport that it did not identify.

Saba named them as Taha al-Issawi and Murad Abdullah Ebad. It said both were aged 32 and had fought in the ranks of al-Qaeda in the eastern province of Hadramawt.

AQAP -- formed out of a merger of the network's Yemeni and Saudi branches -- has denied President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi's allegations that 70 percent of its fighters are foreigners.

But authorities have reported the deaths of several foreigners since launching the latest offensive was launched in Shabwa, as well as Abyan

In March 2011, al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula declared the governate an Islamic Emirate after seizing control of the region. The New York Times fastidiously reported that those in control, while Islamic hard boyz, are not in fact al-Qaeda, but something else that looks, tastes, smells, and acts the same. Yemeni government forces launched an effort to re-establish control of the region when President-for-Life Saleh was tossed and the carnage continues...
and Baida provinces.

On Wednesday, the army said an Algerian, a Pak and a Saudi were among several foreigners killed, with authorities also speaking of Afghans, Somalis and Chechens.

They have also said several al-Qaeda local and foreign commanders are among the scores killed in nearly a fortnight.

Yemeni defense minister escapes al-Qaida attack
Yemeni defense minister escaped an attack by suspected gunmen of the Yemen-based al-Qaida branch in Yemen's southern province of Abyan on Friday afternoon, security officials and witnesses told Xinhua.

The al-Qaida assailants opened fire with automatic gun rifles as defense minister Maj. Gen. Mohammed Nasser Ahmed's convoy passed by on a main road near Mahfad town in Abyan, witnesses said. At least two military officials in the convoy were injured, a security official said, adding the identities of the injured officials were not immediately clear.

An intelligence official in Abyan confirmed the attack and said that Ahmed, who survived two previous assassination attempts on his life in 2011 that killed two of his bodyguards, was unharmed.

However, a tribal chief in Abyan denied the reports saying that "Ahmed's convoy was not targeted or ambushed by gunmen in Abyan."

"The gunfire was fired into the air as a celebration by the tribesmen to receive the defense minister who visited their region, " the tribal chief told Xinhua anonymously by phone.

The Yemeni armed forces backed by mechanized battalions, air force and special forces have killed, wounded and captured dozens of local and foreign suspected al-Qaida militants during the offensive that started two weeks ago. On Thursday, Yemen's Defense Ministry announced that army troops dislodged scores of al-Qaida militants from their last bastion in the southeastern province of Shabwa after a two-week- long fighting.

Commanders of the Yemen-based al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) have vowed Dire Revenge™ to hit back.

Factory owner, driver shot dead in 'sectarian attack'
[DAWN] KARACHI: A factory owner and his driver were rubbed out in a Korangi locality in an attack apparently carried out on sectarian grounds on Thursday, officials said.

They said that Ishtiaq Shaukat was returning from his factory in Korangi in his chauffeur-driven car when armed pillion riders sprayed their vehicle with bullets near Mohammadi Market in Korangi.

He and his driver, Atta Rehman, sustained multiple bullet wounds and were taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre where doctors declared them dead, said Dr Seemi Jamali of the health facility.

"We are investigating the double murder case from two angles," said SSP-East Pir Mohammed Shah.

He said that the assailants also took away the mobile phones, a laptop, a briefcase and other valuables from the vehicle and therefore it could be a robbery.

However,
some people are alive only because it's illegal to kill them...
the second angle was that the murder might be sectarian since victim Ishtiaq was Shia, he added.

Meanwhile,
...back at the mall, Clarissa suddenly spied Mr. Bartlett at the checkout counter. He was buying Grecian Formula!...
a spokesperson for the Majlis Wahdat-e-Moslemeen said that victim Ishtiaq was a founder of an Imambargah
...since Pakistain is very religiously correct™, Shia Moslems can't call their houses of worship 'mosques,' which are reserved for Sunnis. It's not clear if imambargahs are used for explosives storage like mosques are...
in Korangi.

He was also the 'permit-holder' of a 9th Muharram procession in Korangi. Every Thursday, he visited the Korangi Imambargah and on Thursday he was also on his way when assailants targeted him, said the spokesperson.

However,
some men learn by reading. A few learn by observation. The rest have to pee on the electric fence for themselves...
he added, the driver was Sunni.

Victim Ishtiaq was father of four and lived near the Cantonment Railway Station area.

Its 52 km border border with Afghanistan's Kunar Province makes it of strategic importance to Pakistain's strategic depth...
on the night between Wednesday and Thursday.

The residents of the area said that a group of gunnies entered the building of the primary school for boys and planted several bombs in it.

The bombs went off and destroyed the school completely, however, there was no loss of human life as the building was vacant at the time of kabooms.

Confirming the incident, Assistant Political Agent Shah Naseem Khan said that the school building was destroyed completely. He said that a watchman was present in the school but he was overpowered by the bully boyz when they entered to the school.

The members of village defence committee reached the spot soon after the incident and opened firing on the bully boyz but they managed to escape.

No one grabbed credit for destroying the school.

Iraq
11 Killed as Iraq Forces Launch Assault near Fallujah
[An Nahar] Iraqi forces launched an operation Friday to retake areas near the turban-held city of Fallujah in preparation for an eventual assault, a senior officer said, as violence killed 11 people.

Anti-government fighters have held Fallujah,
... the City of Mosques, which might have somthing to do with why it's not called Center of Prosperity or a really nice place to raise your kids...
just a short drive from Storied Baghdad, and shifting parts of Anbar scenic provincial capital Ramadi, farther west, since early January.

"A military operation was launched... to eliminate the ISIL organization and liberate Fallujah," a senior army officer said, referring to powerful jihadist group the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant
... the current version of al-Qaeda in Iraq, just as blood-thirsty and well-beloved as the original...
.

"The operation will continue until an assault on Fallujah," the officer said.

But such an assault is unlikely to occur soon, as security forces have struggled all year to retake territory in Anbar from turbans.

And they would face major challenges in actually assaulting Fallujah, an operation that would likely cause massive damage to the city and carry significant risks of civilian casualties.

Shelling and festivities began in and around Fallujah about 3:00 am (0000 GMT) on Friday and continued for hours, a tribal leader said.

Eight people were killed and nine maimed, according to Dr Ahmed Shami of Fallujah's main hospital

Among the dead were two children, while another two children were maimed, he said.

New al-Qaeda-inspired terror group emerges in Malaysia
A new terrorist group has emerged from under the wing of Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) and Kumpulan Mujahidin Malaysia (KMM), planning to commit acts of terror in Malaysia. Local authorities have recently arrested 11 people on suspicion of involvement with the unnamed, al-Qaeda-inspired group.

Regarding the arrests, Home Minister Zahid Hamidi said some organizations were using humanitarian missions to train militants in other countries. He said, "We encourage humanitarian missions to other countries, but we will not allow such missions to be used to train members for militant activities."

Reports say the group sent members posing as humanitarian workers to Syria for training.

Though authorities have the 11 suspects in custody, officials at federal police headquarters said police "were nowhere near neutralizing the threat posed by this new terror group".

The group was started in late 2013 and has aggressively recruited new members through Facebook, and infiltrating universities and religious classes. In addition, the new group has dispatched some operatives to Syria, according to reports.

Philippine troops clashed with militants on Friday in Maguindanao province killing an undetermined number of gunmen. Colonel Gener del Rosario said a team of soldiers were patroling a village when they encountered about two dozen members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters.

He said, "It was fierce, the fighting in the village and we are sure that the enemies had suffered some casualties because there were bloodstains all over the areas where they withdrawn. We also recovered five M16 automatic rifles along the way and many BIFF uniforms and radio sets and backpacks."

He said that no soldiers were killed or injured in the gun battle.

Malay police nab wayward elk hunters
KUALA LUMPUR: Members of a Somalian terrorist group known as Al-Shabaab have been entering Malaysia pretending to be private college students and tourists.

The Bukit Aman Special Branch Counter Terrorism Unit has been tracking six Al-Shabaab members who entered the country in the past few weeks, according to sources. They said the group planned to set up a base in Malaysia to hide their members from the authorities.
Malaysia is a mostly-civilized country. Hard to hide in such a place. They should have looked at Yemen or Mauritania...
Easier to hide where you'll blend in with the local population. That's why they picked Malaysia. Second choice was Argentina.
Some of the members had left the country but police were monitoring those still here, the sources said.

They added that Al-Shabaab had no links with the militants arrested in Selangor and Kedah recently.
"No, no, certainly not!"
Police achieved a breakthrough when they arrested a 34-year-old Somalian man, wanted by Interpol for hunting elk without a license alleged terror links, in Selangor yesterday.

"More arrests are expected soon. The police have to act fast before this terrorist group gains a foothold in the country," one source said.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Bakri Zinin said the man, who was detained at about 4pm, was believed to be involved with the Al-Shabaab terrorist faction.
He was just an elk hunter. A heavily-armed, elk hunter...
"He was previously charged with being involved in terror activities in East Africa and was listed in Interpol's Red Notice (meaning he is being sought to be extradited to his country of origin).

"We are investigating his activities in Malaysia to uncover Al-Shabaab's network whose members might be hiding or planning action that can threaten the country's safety," he said in a statement.

The man is being investigated under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012. It is learned that police are still searching for a weapon cache the man may have.
