Billionaire Google creator Larry Page won't be leaving his money to charity, he has revealed
Multi-billionaire Google creator Larry Page won't be leaving his money to charity, he has revealed. He'd much rather it go to businessman Elon Musk, founder of electric car company Tesla Motors, Solar City and SpaceX.

Speaking at the TED conference in California on Wednesday, Page, who is estimated to be worth more than $35 billion, said he wanted his cash to go to entrepreneurs who had big ideas for changing the world.

He nominated 42-year-old Musk on the basis of his work with Tesla, as well as his Space-X program that aims to travel to Mars to create a "back-up" of humanity.

"That's a company, and that's philanthropical," Page said, according to Slate.

Musk himself has a $12 billion fortune.
If it is a wise investment, the result will be jobs for those who can do them, the highest level of charity, according to Maimonides. Not to mention moving some of humanity's eggs into a second basket, about the best legacy I can think of for the survival of his descendants.

This Week in Guns, March 22nd, 2014

By Chris Covert
Rantburg.com

As mentioned last week, an Alcohol Tobacco & Firearms lawyer did an end run around a federal court order by pressing for a ruling via an ex parte hearing that gave the ATF everything they needed to conduct their raid in Oceanside, California last Saturday. Jackbooted Thugs of the ATF seized polymer 80 percent receivers they said were firearms, and then they took Ares Armory's customer list. By every legal standard, the ATF has officially registered firearms by force of arms, something that is against federal firearms policy if not the law itself.

Speaking of gun grabbing fascists, the Rhode Island legislature is seeking to revive a semiautomatic weapons ban as well as a "large capacity magazine" limit, hoping their program will be every bit as successful as Connecticut's.

New Jersey is toying with a 10 round magazine limit law.

Meanwhile in New York, gun registration is set to take place next month, and to show their approval, gun owners held a barbeque of registration forms. "Several hundred" "assault weapons" have been registered according to the linked article, but New York State cops estimated there are as many as 1.2 million "assault weapons" in New York.

Connecticut governor Daniel P. Malloy told a gun owner week before last Thursday that his side (gun owners) lost and the governor's side won. Oh Danny boy, your side is doing a bang up job, literally. Can't wait to see how you resolve the 82 percent of gun owners who have refused to register their firearms so your thugs with badges can "break down doors" and take them.

I will also be featuring in this column, when I find them, the best deals in 80 percent receivers. Also next week is the end of Q1, 2014, and we get to see how ammo prices fared over the previous quarter.

Africa Horn
Kenya Legalizes Polygamy without Wife's Consent
[An Nahar] Kenya's parliament has passed a bill allowing men to marry as many women as they want, prompting a furious backlash from female politicians who stormed out, reports said Friday.

The bill, which amended existing marriage legislation, was passed late on Thursday to formalize customary law about marrying more than one person.

The proposed bill had initially given a wife the right to veto the husband's choice, but male members of parliament overcame party divisions to push through a text that dropped this clause.

"When you marry an African woman, she must know the second one is on the way, and a third wife... this is Africa," MP Junet Mohammed told the house, according to Nairobi's Capital FM.

As in many parts of Africa, polygamy is common among traditional communities in Kenya, as well as among the country's Mohammedan community, which accounts for up to a fifth of the population.

"Any time a man comes home with a woman, that would be assumed to be a second or third wife," said Samuel Chepkong'a, chairman of the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee, the Daily Nation newspaper reported.

"Under customary law, women or wives you have married do not need to be told when you're coming home with a second or third wife. Any lady you bring home is your wife," he added.

Female MPs stormed out of the late-night session in fury after a heated debate.

"We know that men are afraid of women's tongues more than anything else," female politician Soipan Tuya told fellow MPs, according to Capital FM.

"But at the end of the day, if you are the man of the house, and you choose to bring on another party -- and they may be two or three -- I think it behoves you to be man enough to agree that your wife and family should know," she added.

A clause in which a partner who had promised marriage but then backed out of the wedding could face financial damages was also dropped, as male MPs argued it could have been used to extort cash.

They also argued that marriage should be based on love, and not have a financial cost placed upon it.

Given that the feminists already are fighting against DNA testing at birth all babies to determine parentage and are against repealing the old archaic laws that stick a man with child support years after the fact when he discovers he's not the real DNA donor, it's a simple escape mechanism to cover the nastiness up.

Putin Signs Crimea Anschluss into Law in Kremlin Ceremony
[An Nahar] President Vladimir Putin
...Second and fourth President of the Russian Federation and the first to remain sober. Putin is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from polonium poisoning. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to Putin. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead...
on Friday sealed the absorption of Crimea into Russia after the upper house of parliament unanimously ratified the treaty in the face of international condemnation.

In a televised ceremony in the Kremlin, Putin signed the legal documents then received a standing ovation from politicians and the singing of the Russian anthem.

"Today we have a serious, momentous event. Today we are completing the legal procedures connected with the addition of Crimea and Sevastopol to Russia," Putin said.

"I want to congratulate you, all the inhabitants of the country, Russian citizens, the inhabitants of Crimea and Sevastopol on this landmark -- without any exaggeration -- event."

Putin signed the initial agreement on Tuesday, which then had to be ratified by the lower and upper houses of parliament in a swift formality.

The Kremlin has said that it considers Crimea part of Russia since the signing of the treaty.

Europe
Study: Curbing Pesticides Will Slash Wheat Yields
[An Nahar] La Belle France's winter wheat harvest could shrink by over a tenth if farmers meet targets to halve pesticide use, said a study Thursday highlighting the challenge of feeding Earth's growing population.

The estimates come from field trials where scientists compared yields to cuts in pesticide use.

Extrapolated for the country as a whole, halving pesticide use could mean a decline in winter wheat production of two to three million tonnes per year, the researchers said. This amounts to a reduction of five to 13 percent of national production of winter wheat, and 15 percent of French wheat exports.

Halving pesticide use "may not be profitable for farmers", the team wrote in the Nature journal Scientific Reports.

With projections of an extra two billion mouths to feed by 2050 and a shortage of new farmland, increasing crop yield per hectare has never been as urgent.

Pesticides played a crucial role in doubling the average yield of cereal crops worldwide from 1960 to 1990, but their impact on human health and biodiversity have made them controversial. European farmers are encouraged to limit pesticide use, and French environmental policy targets a 50-percent reduction by 2018.

Now researchers have calculated what the impact of such a policy is likely to be.

They used data from 176 experimental farming plots from four sites in La Belle France that compared yields for wheat grown with pesticides, with less pesticides, or with none.

Statistical modelling then estimated a broader scenario for La Belle France.

The country had average wheat yield of 7.11 tonnes per hectare between 2008 and 2012. With a 50 percent pesticide reduction, the yield dropped by 0.4 to 0.9 tonnes per hectare, compared to 2-2.3 tonnes per hectare if pesticides are eliminated altogether, the team found.

#1  Cutting pesticides will cut wheat yields.

Cutting wheat yields will lead to starvation. Starvation will lead to reduced population. Reduced population will lead to reduced CO2. Reduced CO2 will lead to reduced global warming.

Ergo, reducing pesticides is a good thing.

#4  Who could object to a teensy 5-13 percent?

Don't know nothing about the economics of farming, but a lot of business only make few percent of sales. Questions:

Does the reduction put a harvest under the break-even point?

Does it change the calculation as to whether to plant wheat or some other crop?

OSCE to Send Monitoring Mission to Ukraine
[An Nahar] OSCE member states agreed Friday to send to Ukraine a monitoring mission initially numbering 100 people after Russia dropped objections, but they will not have access to Crimea.

The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe will "deploy a special monitoring mission of international observers to Ukraine", a resolution passed by the OSCE's 57 member states said.

The mission will initially be of 100 observers and "as necessary and according to the situation ... may expand by a total of up to 400 additional members", it said.

Russia's ambassador to the OSCE, Andrei Kelin, said in Vienna after the decision the fact that the mission will not be deployed in Crimea was in line with "geopolitical realities".

"The mandate of this mission is absolutely clear. It proceeds from the geopolitical realities that are existing. Since today, Crimea has become a part of the Russian Federation," Kelin told news hounds.

Having blocked at OSCE headquarters such a mission for the past week, he said that it "might be a first and important step to de-escalate tension in this area".

According to the text, the aim is to "contribute throughout the country and in co-operation with ... relevant actors in the international community (such as the United Nations
...aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society...
and the Council of Europe), to reduce tensions and fostering peace, stability and security".

The monitors will be headquartered in Kiev and deployed around Ukraine including to Kherson and Odessa in the south and Kharkiv and Donetsk in the east.

The OSCE's current chairperson and Swiss Foreign Minister Didier Burkhalter said advance teams would be sent "within 24 hours".

Venice Votes to Cut Ties with Italy in Online Poll
[An Nahar] Italians in Venice and its surrounding region have voted in an online poll in favor of breaking away from the rest of the country and forming their own state.

Over two million residents of the Veneto region took part in the week-long survey, with 89 percent voting in favor of independence from Italia.

The online vote, organized by local independence parties, is not legally binding but aims to galvanize support for a bill calling for a referendum.

Twitter lit up with excited separatists sparring with disparaging Italians from other regions who described the poll as "total madness".

Supporters say the new Republic of Veneto would be inspired by the ancient Venetian republic -- a rich economic, cultural and trading power which existed from the seventh century until its fall to Napoleon in 1797.

The result was announced in Padua to a couple of hundred pro-independence campaigners who cheered and waved Venetian republic flags.

The Indipendenza Veneta party behind the bill says the separatist movement is fueled by the government's apparent inability to stamp out corruption, protect its citizens from a damaging recession and plug waste in the poorer south.

The poll on plebiscito.eu asked inhabitants of historic cities such as Treviso, Vicenza and Verona whether -- if the new republic was created -- they would want to keep the euro and belong to the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
and NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A cautionary tale of cost-benefit analysis....

But the region's president Luca Zaia told foreign journalists this week that the referendum bill -- which must be approved by the regional council before it goes before the parliament in Rome -- "still has some way to go".

Critics protest that an attempt to split from Italia could be unconstitutional.

Ukraine signs political accord with European Union
[LATIMES] Ukraine was tugged in opposite directions Friday in a reminder of the Cold War past, with the government in Kiev pushing westward through closer ties to the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
and Russia pulling Crimea eastward by formally annexing it.

Separate signing ceremonies in Brussels and Moscow illustrated the rapidly diverging paths of Ukraine and the Crimean peninsula, which Ukraine insists still belongs to it but which Russia claims as its own. The dispute over the strategically important region has led to perhaps the most serious confrontation between the West and Russia since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

There were a few indications Friday that the penalties imposed on Russia by the United States and Europe were having some of their intended effect. Russian President Vladimir Putin
...Second and fourth President of the Russian Federation and the first to remain sober. Putin is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from polonium poisoning. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead...
signaled a possible pause in the mutual retaliation between the two sides.

In Brussels, Ukrainian officials sealed a deal deepening political cooperation with the 28-nation European Union. The pact revived an agreement that the EU offered to Ukraine several months ago that then-President Viktor Yanukovich rejected in favor of closer ties with Moscow, a last-minute turnaround that led to months of protests, Yanukovich's ouster and Russia's incursion into Crimea.

The Grand Turk
Furious reaction, political split after Erdogan Bey bans Twitter
[UK.REUTERS] Turkey's ban on Twitter ahead of bitterly contested elections brought a furious reaction at home and abroad on Friday, with users of the social networking service denouncing the move as a "digital coup" and the president expressing his disapproval.

A court blocked access to Twitter after Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's defiant vow, on the campaign trail on Thursday ahead of March 30 local elections, to "wipe out" the social media service, whatever the international community had to say about it.

Industry Minister Fikri Isik said talks with Twitter were taking place and the ban would be lifted if the the Socialist paradise of San Francisco

Tech-savvy Turks - President Abdullah Gul apparently among them - quickly found ways to circumvent the ban, with the hashtag #TwitterisblockedinTurkey among the top trending globally on Friday.
"We stand with our users in Turkey who rely on Twitter as a vital communications platform. We hope to have full access returned soon," the company said in a tweet.

A company front man declined to say whether it would appoint someone in Turkey but said it was moving forward in talks with the government.

Tech-savvy Turks - President Abdullah Gul apparently among them - quickly found ways to circumvent the ban, with the hashtag #TwitterisblockedinTurkey among the top trending globally on Friday.

"One cannot approve of the complete closure of social media platforms," Gul tweeted, voicing his hope that the ban would be short-lived and setting himself publicly at odds with the prime minister.

Erdogan, who has dominated Turkish politics for 11 years, is battling a corruption scandal that has been fed by social media awash with alleged evidence of government wrongdoing. He did not mention the Twitter ban at two campaign rallies on Friday.

Turkey's main opposition party said it would challenge the ban and file a criminal complaint against Erdogan on the grounds of violating personal freedoms. The country's bar association filed a separate court challenge.

#2  The reason he wants those shut down is that they were being used to leak the investigations that shows him to be a criminal - investigations there were done by the people he fired in order to stop the investigations. Erdogan is not only a scummy Mohammedan, but a crook as well.

No breakthrough in unblocking YouTube
[DAWN] There is no possibility that the internet users in Pakistain will be able to access YouTube in the near future.

At least this was the message conveyed to the Senate standing committee on information technology which met on Thursday.

Though the unblocking of the site was not on the agenda, it was discussed before the 12 items were taken up by the committee members. However,
if you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning...
the subject ended as soon as it was taken up.

Senator Zahid Khan, the chairman of the committee, said a negative impression was sent out about the nation that it could not decide if the site was to remain blocked or not.

"We are getting tired of the confusion. People are being denied access to a vital information-based website. We want to know if the government is unblocking the site or not," Senator Khan said. However,
if you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning...
there was no clear answer.

The site was blocked in September 2012 after a blasphemous US film, Innocence of Moslems, was uploaded on it.

Dr Ismail Shah, the chairman of the Pakistain Telecommunication Authority (PTA), repeated before the committee what he has been saying: "The controversial film cannot be blocked 100 per cent."

Thai Court Voids Election, Adding to Turmoil
[NY Times] Thailand's Constitutional Court annulled the country's February general election on Friday, throwing an already murky political situation into further doubt.

The election was called by Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra in response to months of demonstrations in Bangkok. Protesters have been calling for Ms. Yingluck's ouster, and for Thai politics to be rid of the influence of her brother Thaksin Shinawatra, a billionaire ex-prime minister who wields considerable power from abroad.

Protesters disrupted the election on Feb. 2, preventing voters from registering and casting ballots in Bangkok and southern Thailand, the stronghold of the movement against the government. Before the vote, people seeking office in 28 election districts in the south had been prevented from registering as candidates, so there were no names on the ballots there.

Because of the disruptions and the absence of candidates in the southern districts, voting could not be held everywhere in the country on the same day, as required by Thailand's Constitution. Therefore, the election was unconstitutional, the court found Friday in a 6-to-3 ruling.

Matt Drudge Ridiculed For Paying Obama Care Tax Responds With SB Tax Fact
A White House aide set off a stampede of liberal media criticism for Internet news pioneer Matt Drudge over Obamacare -- but his critics don't seem to understand how small businesses pay taxes.

The brouhaha started when Drudge tweeted, "Just paid the Obamacare penalty for not 'getting covered'... I'M CALLING IT A LIBERTY TAX."

Jesse Lee, the Director of Progressive Media at Barack Obama's White House, responded that that was a "Flat lie, no fee for previous year," adding, "Scary how much influence he once had."

Lee's response to Drudge set off a firestorm in the liberal media, with many mainstream media and left-wing reporters countering him on Twitter and in their own articles to claim he does not have to pay Obamacare's Individual Mandate tax until next year. The individual mandate went into effect Jan. 1 of this year, and most people paying their taxes right now are paying taxes for 2013.

"Dude, there's no penalty until next yr," Sahil Kapur of the leftwing Talking Points Memo tweeted.

Kapur's colleague at TPM Dylan Scott wrote a full story with a headline alleging Drudge was "probably lying."

"Americans don't pay a penalty for not having health insurance until they file their 2014 taxes -- in 2015," Scott wrote. "So either Drudge is lying or he paid a huge penalty a year earlier than he needed to."

"Penalty isn't collected until 2015," Sam Baker of National Journal tweeted at Drudge.

The Huffington Post's Jeffrey Young wrote a full article in which he described Drudge's tweet as "weird" and a "little head-scratching" because the Obamacare tax does not kick in until the 2014 tax year.

Drudge indicated in his followup tweets that since he is self-employed as the proprietor of The Drudge Report, he files as a small business. According to the IRS's website for self-employed individuals, they are required to pay taxes quarterly.

"As a self-employed individual, generally you are required to file an annual return and pay estimated tax quarterly," the IRS website reads.

So, when they file and pay those 2014 first quarter taxes, such individuals have to pay the Obamacare Individual Mandate tax if they opted to not have health insurance--like Drudge just did.

Additionally, the IRS form (1040-ES) for estimating quarterly taxes specifically recommends adding the mandate penalty to line 12 for "other taxes" -- to pay before the first quarterly deadline of April 15.

"It is true that thousands of small businesses will be forced to pay Obamacare taxes quarterly in 2014," a Senate Budget Committee aide told Breitbart News on Friday afternoon.

Drudge even indicated as much in followup tweets, but the left-wing reporters--and the White House--have left their criticisms of him intact.

"Dazed team Obama media reporters think Opt-Out tax 'year away'?" Drudge tweeted. "Not for small businesses that file Qtr estimates. We're there NOW, baby #pay.
Let me explain why the last gleeful statement made by Matt is so gleeful. The White House thought that they were delaying Obamacare tax until AFTER the next election. What Matt did was make it clear that millions of small business must pay NOW. That will hammer the Dems in the next election, "BABY!". Matt is a genius.
Even more of a genius for the additional free publicity over and above what he does on the Report...
