China-Japan-Koreas
Tokyo - US Embassy blasts NHK exec's denial of WWII war crimes
From CCTV.com:

The US Embassy in Tokyo has condemned charges by a top official at Japan’s national broadcaster NHK. NHK Naoki Hyakuta has claimed Americans fabricated war crimes against Japan during World War Two.

The embassy spokesman called the charges preposterous. He expressed hope that people in positions of responsibility in Japan would seek to avoid comments that inflame tensions in the region. Hyakuta made his claims in campaign speeches supporting a candidate for governor of Tokyo.

He said the 1937 Nanjing Massacre never occurred. He said Americans staged the postwar trial of Japanese leaders to cover up their own war crimes, including the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The US Embassy's criticism follows Wednesday’s condemnation by the Chinese Foreign Ministry. The Foreign Ministry said the international community should be alarmed by some people in Japan denying historical facts and challenging justice and human conscience.

U.S. vows to defend Japan if conflict erupts in East China Sea
WASHINGTON -- Secretary of State John Kerry vowed Friday that the United States would defend Japan against attack, even in conflicts involving islands claimed by China and Taiwan, as tensions continue to boil between the Asian powers.
There was a time when we wouldn't have had to say this publicly...
There was a time when if we did have to say it publicly other countries would take it seriously.
Kerry, who said he would visit China next week, met in Washington with Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida and reaffirmed the 1960 treaty that commits the United States to protect its ally.

"That includes with respect to the South China Sea," he said, before correcting himself to say the East China Sea, where China and Japan have conflicting claims.
Paid attention to the briefing before-hand, didya Jahwn...
Fears of conflict rose in November when China imposed an air defense identification zone over much of the East China Sea. Beijing says it now requires notification from planes crossing the Senkaku Islands, long administered by Tokyo.

"The United States neither recognizes nor accepts China's declared East China Sea ADIZ and the United States has no intention of changing how we conduct operations in the region," Kerry said.

The United States and its allies are increasingly concerned China will take similar action in the South China Sea, where the Philippines in particular has voiced worries about Beijing's maritime claims.

Kishida, for his part, extended an invitation for President Barack Obama to make a state visit to Japan.

Diplomats say Obama is likely to visit Japan during an April tour of Asia, although Kerry is not expected to stop in Tokyo on his upcoming trip.

Kishida was visiting Washington after a rare open disagreement between the two allies. The United States voiced disappointment in December when Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, known for his conservative views, paid a pilgrimage to Yasukuni Shrine, which honors 2.5 million war dead including convicted Class-A war criminals from World War II. The Shinto facility played a heavy spiritual role in Japan's military campaign.

Abe's visit outraged China and fellow U.S. ally South Korea, both of which frequently accuse Japan of showing insufficient remorse for its various acts of aggression from a century ago by allowing politicians and government officials to visit the contentious shrine.

Kishida told Kerry that Japan valued its relationship with South Korea despite their "difficult issues," saying the two democracies needed to work together in the face of nuclear-armed North Korea.

"Going forward, we will make tenacious efforts in order to build a cooperative relationship with the Republic of Korea from a broad perspective," Kishida said, using the South's formal name.

Kishida also highlighted progress under Abe in shifting U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Futenma farther north on Okinawa -- an issue that has cast a pall over defense ties for nearly two decades.

Twelve-year-old bride was married in her father's house
The Muslim convert father of the 12-year-old girl at the center of a child sex case following her "marriage" to a 26-year-old foreigner admitted his unhappiness at their union, but said "it was not my decision". The fifth-generation Australian, who allowed the pair to be married by an imam in his home on January 12, now says he fears she may "die" from a broken heart.

He also addressed public outrage on the case following the 26-year-old Lebanese man’s arrest on Thursday, saying he might "cop a little bit of abuse off people but I will have to cope with that".

The pair met at a local mosque late last year after the 26-year-old came to Australia to study at a nearby university.

He approached the mosque about marrying the girl but the Newcastle Muslim Association president said he was turned away because it was illegal and "wrong". He then approached the girl's father — who converted to Islam about 18 years ago after a battle with drugs, gambling and alcohol abuse — through an intermediary, who told him of the man’s intentions.

He initially refused but agreed to let him come to his house to meet his daughter. He said it was almost over from the start when she found out he was 26, but she changed her mind.

The girl's father said his first concerns were more about religion than the man's or his daughter's ages. However, he said the only way they could be in any type of relationship, let alone in the same room unchaperoned, under "my interpretation of the Koran" was if they were married.

He said the couple moved to western Sydney after the marriage. He said they tried to enrol his daughter at a local high school but were told to go to Centrelink to ascertain her guardianship. The father said a social worker at Centrelink raised the alarm before authorities intervened.

The man was refused bail at Burwood Local Court on Friday after being charged by Child Abuse Squad detectives with multiple counts of sexual intercourse with a child.

#1  The Swiss have a national referendum process. While it occasionally is a source of low comedy, it also is a means of allowing Swiss voters to speak as a nation on policy.

What they have done here is the only rational move - they have voted to retain their integrity as a nation. Other Western countries will have to face the same question and reach their own conclusions. It is no longer possible to continue importing an underclass to support the socialist pyramid scheme we call the welfare state. Eventually the new underclass gets large enough, and wise enough, to make demands of their own.

The article itself is nothing but FUD around skilled workers needed for industry. Well, the simple fact is that Ciba Geigy will continue to hire whomever it wants. The issue is not whether PhD's should be able to work for Swiss companies. Rather it is whether politicians can continue to import large numbers of new constituents and pay for it with middle class tax money.

Ditto as per JORDAN + PA-occupied West Bank.

UNTIL THE ABOVE QUESTIONS ARE ANSWERED OR RESOLVED, THE PA REMAINS A GOVT-PEOPLE WIDOUT A PHYSICAL COUNTRY - IFF ANYTHING, THE PA IS NOTHING BUT A POLITY/ENTITY-IN-LEASEHOLD, IE. IT BORROWS OR LEASES SOVEREIGN LAND FROM OWNERS EGYPT + JORDAN, NOT TO OWN OR CONTROL ANY IN ITS OWN NAME OR RIGHT.

On a surreal or subjective note, the PA = LITMUS TEST for post-2015 OWG NAU/Globalist Amerika = Internationally-recognized Govt-State whose physical land, resources + Comparative Endowments-Advantages, etc, is DE FACTO MAJORILY OR OVERWHELMINGLY controlled by FOREIGN NATIONS???

Science & Technology
NASA bets on private companies to exploit moon's resources
[Bangla Daily Star] NASA -- building on successful partnerships with private companies to resupply the International Space Station -- is now looking to private entrepreneurs to help exploit resources on the moon.

In its latest initiative, unveiled in late January, the US space agency is proposing private companies take advantage of NASA's extensive know-how, its engineers and access to its installations to help design and build lunar robots.

But unlike NASA's contracts with SpaceX and Orbital Sciences to deliver cargo to the ISS, the moon proposal -- dubbed CATALYST (Cargo Transportation and Landing by Soft Touchdown) -- would get no US government economic help.

Recent missions in the moon's orbit have revealed evidence of water and other interesting substances on the moon, explained Jason Crusan, director of NASA's advanced exploration systems.

"But to understand the extent and accessibility of these resources, we need to reach the surface and explore up close."

"Commercial lunar landing capabilities could help prospect for and utilize these resources," permitting both commercial and research activities, he said.

"As NASA pursues an ambitious plan for humans to explore an asteroid and Mars, US industry will create opportunities for NASA to advance new technologies on the moon," Greg Williams, a top NASA official, added.

In 2013 NASA reached an agreement with Bigelow Aerospace to develop commercial sector involvement with the space agency, especially focused on plans to build a lunar base.

Founded by US billionaire Robert Bigelow, the company offers inflatable space modules.

These partnerships work "very well in lower orbit," said Bigelow's Michael Gold, referring to the re-supply contracts at the International Space Station.

"There is no reason it won't work just as well on the moon," he told AFP.

"Additionally, in this austere (budget) environment, it only makes sense to leverage private sector investments and capabilities," he said.

"It's not only the best option, but, because of the lack of federal money, the best option available to move forward drastically."

According to Gold, this approach is cheaper than a standard space mission fully paid by the federal government. For a few billion dollars it could even be possible to carry out manned missions to the Moon within a decade, Gold said.

"I think there is a great commercial potential on the moon," he added, citing significant reservers of helium 3, which is rare on Earth and which could be developed into a clean energy fuel ideal for nuclear fusion.

The lunar soil is also rich in coveted rare earth elements: 17 chemicals in the periodic table that are in an increased demand because they are heavily used in everyday electronics.

"There are a vast amount of opportunities for a wide variety of companies not only in America but across the globe," Gold insisted, emphasizing Europe and Japan, as well as the US Congress, are enthusiastic about a return to the moon.

John Logsdon, former director of the Space Policy Institute at George Washington University, said these private partnerships could be "a way of NASA getting back involved with the moon without violating the president's policy that says we as a government we don't go back to the moon."

Logsdon was referring to Obama's 2010 decision to cancel the Constellation program -- created by his predecessor, George W. Bush -- which planed to return Americans to the moon by 2020 before embarking for Mars, but which was deemed too costly.

NASA chief Charles Bolden said last year his agency would not take the lead on a manned lunar mission, but wouldn't rule out the possibility of participating in one led by a private company or another country.

#1  AFAIK most Space Perts consider the Moon's core as "dead" - any resources it has is bound to be extremely limited in both quantity + quality.

Additional operational tours have included Marine Fighter Attack Squadrons 212, 235, 232, and 122.

General Amos’ staff assignments include tours with Marine Aircraft Groups 15 and 31, the III Marine Amphibious Force, Training Squadron Seven, The Basic School, and with the MAGTF Staff Training Program. Additionally, he was assigned to NATO as Deputy Commander, Naval Striking Forces, Southern Europe, Naples Italy where he commanded NATO’s Kosovo Verification Center, and later served as Chief of Staff, U.S. Joint Task Force Noble Anvil during the air campaign over Serbia. Transferred in 2000 to the Pentagon, he was assigned as Assistant Deputy Commandant for Aviation. Reassigned in December 2001, General Amos served as the Assistant Deputy Commandant for Plans, Policies and Operations, Headquarters, Marine Corps. From 2008-2010 General Amos served as the 31st Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps

He's not one of my favorite Commandants (I've worked with much better ones,) but he's not exactly a REMF, to use a hoary Viet Name-era acronym.

#10  Again, anonymous poster, I'm no fan of the current Commandant. I've worked with better. Much better.

But, on a philosophical point, being in a "gunfight" or firing a shot "in anger" is not a sole qualifier for leadership. Look at John McCain or John Kerry.

#11  Or on the flip side, Eisenhower.

I'm a civilian here, and do not understand many peripheral aspects of the military such as Marine Corps Times, but it is my understanding that (in modern times, land forces) after a certain rank the opportunity to personally fire in anger is almost non-existant or something very wrong has happened?

#12  After a certain level, yes. But colonels and such still see action.

To further my comment to our anonymous war-hero: there were a lot of lousy, little, nasty operations in the 80s and 90s that didn't make much press, that still killed and wounded some of us that were in them. But just because you didn't hear of it doesn't mean that anyone pinning on a star who you don't think saw combat is a "POG."

I don't know if Amos was in any of them. I highly doubt it. He's a lousy Commandant. But I wouldn't rule out him seeing action.
