Political activist and revolutionary assassinated in Derna
[Libya Herald] A local political activist and former revolutionary was yesterday bumped off in the eastern town of Derna.

Amer Saad Abdel was rubbed out last night, although the exact place and circumstances surrounding his death are not yet clear, according to Libyan news agency LANA.

Sources told LANA that Abdel was killed instantly when gunnies in a black vehicle opened fire on his car near the western gate of the town. His wife and daughter, reportedly in the car at the time of the attack, were not injured. Another report, however, has said that he was killed in a drive-by shooting outside his house.

Abdel has been described as an early supporter and prominent member of the 17 February Revolution.

25 Brotherhood sympathizers arrested in Giza for hampering voting process
[Egypt Independent] Giza security services said security incarcerated
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
25 Moslem Brüderbund sympathizers in the areas of Monsha'at al-Qanater, al-Sheikh Zayed, al-Talbeya and Agouza for hampering the voting process.

Hundreds of supporters of deposed President Mohammed Morsy fired shots against polling stations at al-Farouq school in Mansoureya, injuring four bystanders. Security forces used teargas to disperse the Brotherhood supporters and 19 were arrested.

A worker and his wife were also arrested in Sheikh Zayed area for "rioting" as well as holding flyers, a drum and speakers.

In Agouza, security troops arrested a worker and a student in possession of 11 molotov cocktails. The suspects confessed to holding them to use against police and military.

In Talbeya, a housewife was arrested while holding a gun and 16 bullets as well as drugs.

In Hawamdeya, security is working on arresting dozens of Morsy supporters who blocked Cairo-Assiut agricultural road and burnt a car driven by coppers after beating them and seizing their weapons.

Reports were filed. Prosecution was notified to conduct investigations.

The interim government has stepped up security in face of demonstrations staged during the referendum as it is the most pivotal step in the democratic transition following the military-supported ouster of Egypt's first democratically-elected President Mohammed Morsy as it gives legitimacy to what many critics of the 30 June uprising call a "coup."

One dead, ten injured in Cairo University clashes
[Egypt Independent] Health Ministry spokesperson Ahmed Kamel has said that a student was rubbed out and 10 others were maimed in festivities that took place at Cairo University on Thursday.

Kamel added that the injuries were bruises and wounds from cartridges.

The Interior Ministry claimed in a statement that the student died before security forces arrived on campus. It added that security forces have been deployed on campus following the incident in order to protect facilities.

A security source said that police forces were deployed to tighten control over events on campus and its surroundings, as well as to preserve public safety and property.

Three armored vehicle were deployed on Cairo University campus along with security forces that used tear gas to disperse pro-Moslem Brüderbund protests, after which a state of hit and run took place between the clashing sides.

Protesting students gathered in front of the main gate of Cairo University Thursday afternoon and set fire to garbage bins on campus. Students were reportedly injured during the face off. Clahes moved to Tharwat Street and Nahda Square near Cairo University, after which more security forces were deployed in the area.

Since the new school year, many students have rejected the new military-led government by holding protests on campuses throughout Egypt. Many have been tossed in the slammer

or killed in the violence that has ensued between security forces at students.

Britain
Two Women Arrested in Britain on Terror Grounds
[An Nahar] British police tossed in the calaboose
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
two women on Thursday on suspicion of terror offences, including one who was about to catch a flight to Istanbul, Scotland Yard said.

Counter-terror police arrested the women aged 26 and 27 "on suspicion of being involved in the commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism", London's police headquarters said.

A Scotland Yard spokeswoman would not comment on whether the arrests were in connection with imported muscle travelling to fight in Syria, across the border from Turkey.

Officers "acting on intelligence" stopped the 26-year-old at London Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5 as she was preparing to catch a flight to Istanbul, the force said in a statement.

A large quantity of cash was also seized, police said.

The 27-year-old woman was arrested several hours later at a house in northwest London.

The pair remain in jug and detectives are searching two premises in London.

"Both arrests were intelligence-led and not in response to any immediate threat or risk," the police statement said.

British police have arrested a number of people under anti-terror laws in recent months on suspicion of going to Syria to fight with jihadi groups.

Two men arrested on Monday at Heathrow on suspicion of terror offences after arriving on a flight from Istanbul remain in jug.

I'd say that was a fairly circumspect way of confirming it though.

Blast at Peshawar Tablighi centre kills ten, injures more than 60
[DAWN] At least ten people were killed and more than 60 injured Thursday evening when a bomb went kaboom! at a religious centre in Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.

province.

Eyewitnesses said the bomb went kaboom! at Tablighi Markaz on Pajaggi Road run by the Tableeghi Jamaat, just before Maghrib prayers. Around a thousand people were gathered at the seminary for a Shab-e-Juma (Thursday) congregation when the bomb destroyed the centre, according to reports.

Provincial Health Minister Shaukat Yousufzai confirmed the number of casualties. "Eight people have died and 67 maimed," he said.

Shafqat Malik, a bigwig of the bomb disposal squad, said the bomb was planted inside a canister of ghee (cooking oil). "Around five kilograms of kaboom was used in the blast, which exploded through a timed device," he said.

An intelligence official, however, said the bomb had been brought in a sleeping-bag, and was "meant to be planted somewhere else but went kaboom!."

Two more bombs diffused at blast site

Meanwhile,
...back at the wine tasting, Vince was about to start tasting his third quart...
two more bombs in suspicious bags in Peshawar's Tablighi Centre were defused by the bomb disposal squad by applying water charge.

The suspected explosives were placed on the second floor of the mosque where an earlier kaboom had left eight people dead and 67 others injured.

AIG Shafqat Malik told that the bombs weighed at least five kilograms each and were placed in vegetable oil tins fitted with time devices.

Bomb defused in Nowshera

Meanwhile,
...back at the hanging, Butch continued with his last words, trying not to repeat himself too often......
bomb disposal experts defused a bomb planted outside a Tablighi Markaz mosque in Nowshera, around the same time the bomb went kaboom! in the Peshawar.

According to officials of the bomb disposal squad, a bomb weighing five kilograms was planted outside the main gate of the mosque.

Police front man Turk Ali Shah said bomb was similarly planted in a canister of ghee.

The bomb was defused just before Maghrib prayers, around same time the Peshawar bomb went kaboom!. A Shab-e-Juma congregation was also scheduled to take place at the Nowshera religious centre.

This is not the first time that a religious centre of the Tableeghi Jamaat has been targeted.

In January 2012, at least 22 people were killed in a blast at a Tableeghi centre in the once turbans' infested district of Swat.

For some reason the Pak intel services were never able to locate his transmitter, much less bomb it. After ruling the place like a conquered province for a year or so, Fazlullah's Talibs began gobbling up more territory as they pushed toward Islamabad, at which point as a matter of self-preservation the Mighty Pak Army threw them out and chased them into Afghanistan...

Iraq
Iraq Launches Assault on Anbar Militant Stronghold
[An Nahar] Deadly festivities erupted in Iraq's crisis-hit western province of Anbar on Thursday as security forces assaulted a turban stronghold while mortars in the city of Fallujah killed two people.

The fighting came a day after gunnies, including those linked to al-Qaeda, wrested control of two key areas in the predominantly Sunni province as diplomats urged Iraqi authorities to pursue political reconciliation with the disaffected Sunni minority to end the weeks-long standoff and a protracted surge in nationwide bloodshed.

But with parliamentary elections looming in April, Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki has ruled out dialogue with fighters, who control parts of Anbar quiet provincial capital Ramadi and all of Fallujah,
... the City of Mosques, which might have somthing to do with why it's not called Center of Prosperity or a really nice place to raise your kids...
which lies on Storied Baghdad
...located along the Tigris River, founded in the 8th century, home of the Abbasid Caliphate...
's doorstep.

Around 3,000 security personnel, comprised of units from the elite Golden Brigade linked to Maliki's office, and the interior ministry's Rapid Intervention Force, attacked an alleged turban camp in Albubali, an area comprising villages and rural farmland between Ramadi and Fallujah.

The forces were backed by tanks and aircraft, according to a police brass hat and a policeman, both of whom spoke on condition of anonymity.

"The main target is to take control of this area (Albubali)," the officer said.

He said they also aimed to recover the bodies of eight members of the security forces -- four of whom have been missing for several days and have since been confirmed dead, and four others who were killed when a booby-trapped house collapsed on them.

Clashes were also reported just west of Fallujah overnight, while two mortars in the city killed two people. It was unclear who took part in the festivities, or who was responsible for the shelling.

Fighting initially broke out in the Ramadi area on December 30, when security forces cleared a year-old Sunni Arab protest camp.

The violence spread to Fallujah, and hard boyz moved in and seized the city and parts of Ramadi after security forces withdrew.

(ISIL) has been involved in the fighting along with anti-government tribal fighters. The government, meanwhile, has recruited its own tribal allies.

The crisis marks the first time hard boyz have exercised such open control in major cities since the height of the insurgency that followed the U.S.-led invasion of 2003.

14 Kidnapped Men Found Dead North of Baghdad
[An Nahar] The bodies of 14 men, kidnapped earlier Thursday by bully boyz dressed in army uniforms, were found rubbed out in an orchard north of Storied Baghdad
...located along the Tigris River, founded in the 8th century, home of the Abbasid Caliphate...
, security officials said.

The victims, taken from their homes in the predominantly Sunni Arab town of Mishahda, had all suffered gunshots to the head and chest, the officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity
... for fear of being murdered...
.

Among them were at least five members of one family.

The killings come amid a protracted months-long surge in nationwide unrest that has sparked fears Iraq is on the verge of slipping back into the all-out Sunni-Shiite sectarian war that left tens of thousands dead in 2006 and 2007.

At the peak of sectarian fighting in the wake of the 2003 U.S.-led invasion, Sunni and Shiite militias regularly carried out tit-for-tat kidnappings and liquidations and left scores of corpses littering the streets.

"On the eve of the Syrian opposition coalition general assembly meeting tomorrow to decide whether to participate in Geneva in the peace conference, the United States ... urges a positive vote," Kerry said in a surprise statement to news hounds.

"The Syrian people need to be able to determine the future of their country, their voice must be heard," he said, ahead of the peace conference in Switzerland

Army Seizes Shells, Ammo in Arsal-Bound Car
[An Nahar] The army on Thursday intercepted a car carrying shells and ammunition on the al-Namliyeh Bridge in Dahr al-Baydar in the Bekaa, state-run National News Agency reported.

"The Lebanese army stopped on the al-Namliyeh Bridge a gray Mazda carrying a license plate with the number 149011/T and driven by Lebanese national Bilal Hasan Khalaf," NNA said.

"It was heading for Arsal and five RPG shells and a quantity of ammunition of various calibers were found in it," the agency added.

Since the beginning of the Syrian crisis more than two years ago, the army has seized several vehicles carrying arms, ammo and explosives from and to Syrian territory.

On Tuesday, the army raided places in the Bekaa town of Kamed al-Lawz and placed in durance vile

Car Bomb Kills 3, Hurts Dozens in Hermel, 'al-Nusra in Lebanon' Claims Attack
[An Nahar] A boom-mobileing targeted on Thursday the eastern town of Hermel, a Hizbullah stronghold, killing at least three people and wounding more than 26, in an attack claimed by an apparent al-Nusra Front offshoot.

The kaboom destroyed Hermel's main square where the Serail is located. Hermel is a predominantly Shiite town and lies near the Leb-Syria border.

A group calling itself "al-Nusra Front in Leb" grabbed credit for the attack in a Twitter message.

"With the help of God, the bastion of Iran's party (Hizbullah) in Hermel has been rocked by a martyrdom operation carried out by one of the 'lions' of al-Nusra Front in Leb, in response to the party's crimes against the women and kiddies of the Sunni community in Syria," the tweet said.

The group called on Sunnis across Leb to "close their ranks to confront the Party of Satan (Hizbullah)."

The alleged Nusra offshoot described Hizbullah as "foolish and coward."

"It is foolish in its security evaluations and coward for placing its bases in civilian areas," it added.

Al-Nusra Front is the main rebel group fighting to topple the Assad regime. It is al-Qaeda's arm in Syria and is listed by the United States as a terrorist organization.

It is not clear whether al-Nusra Front in Leb has links to the Syrian rebel group.

The health ministry said human remains were found near the site of the blast.

Red Thingy Operations Director George Kettaneh said some of the maimed were at death's door and would be taken to hospitals in the eastern city of Zahle.

Reports said the bombing was caused by a jacket wallah after witnesses saw human remains in the mangled car, a black Kia four-wheeler, which was parked near the Canadian Bank.

The bank's manager is among the dead, they said.

Al-Jadeed TV reported that the suicide bomber was wearing an explosives belt and the car was loaded with explosives.

The army issued a statement saying three people were killed and several others were maimed in the bombing. It did not confirm whether the attack was a suicide kaboom.

In another statement issued in the evening, the army said the blast resulted from around 30 kilograms of explosives that were placed in a Kia SUV carrying a fake license plate with the number 266271/M.

Caretaker Health Minister Ali Hassan Khalil asked the hospitals in the eastern Bekaa region to treat the injured at the expense of the ministry.

Hermel's mayor, Sobhi Saqr, told Hizbullah's al-Manar TV that the attack occurred as students were on their way to schools and while employees were going to work.

"It was a very big blast," Saqr said.

Later, State Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Saqr Saqr ordered security forces to carry out the preliminary investigations in Hermel blast and tasked Judge Kamal Nassar to inspect the site of the kaboom.

The army command urged citizens not to gather in the targeted area to avoid another bombing and facilitate the task of the military and the specialized agencies.

Earlier this month, a suicide boom-mobileing shook the district of Haret Hreik in Beirut's southern suburbs.

That bombing was the fourth attack in Beirut's southern suburbs, a Hizbullah bastion, since the party announced it was fighting in Syria.

As well as the Iranian embassy suicide kabooms in November, the southern suburbs also suffered an August 15 bombing and a blast earlier the same month.
